Chapter 2
Author's Note: Thank you to everyone who has left a review, ya'll have been great and I have enjoyed reading them. Chapter two is finished and I hope you love it. I have the next couple of chapters outlined and I hope to write them and post them this week.
As always I don't own Chicago PD, Fire, or Med, I just borrow these amazing characters and put them in my own little world for a little while.
Mouse was hoping he and Jay were wrong about this Ryan guy that Liz was dating, although it didn't sit well with him already that he was trying to give Liz shit about graduate school and that he implied she was fat. Liz had been through more in her short 28 years than lots of other people and because of his friendship with Jay and their time together in the military, Mouse knew about more of her life than most people. He was protective of Liz and while she was sure to be pissed they had done a deep dive her current boyfriend, they weren't going to apologize for it, his gut told him this Ryan guy was bad news. Mouse focused his attention on his screen as an alert beeped, he had found more about this guy than he wanted, in front of him he saw a domestic incident from when this guy was in college, and assault charge from a few years ago (though it looks like it got dropped), a few drunk and disorderly from college, the most concerning was that he was questioned when his girlfriend disappeared in Alabama a few years ago, besides that he pulled the guys financials (He would give the devil his due he did make a ton of money) and his personal background as far as he could find anything, Mouse knew Liz liked that Ryan was from the south, she had gone to live with an aunt and uncle in Kentucky when Jay and Will were both away, then she had stayed in the south for college, Auburn, Jay and Will talked about it all the time, how their Chicago sister had turned into a Southern Belle when they weren't looking. So when Liz's friend from school introduced her to a tech firm guy that was from Alabama and had gone to school in the south, Liz was all about meeting him. Now he knew under all that southern boy charm Ryan used on Liz was a much darker true personality. He dropped everything into an electronic folder and dropped it in an email to Jay, he would put the hard copy in his friends locker, no need for the whole team to know they were using CPD resources to vet Liz's new boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Liz and Kelly were making the trek up to Ryan's apartment, somehow between the door to the building and the staircase Liz managed to only keep her purse and one grocery bag, while Kelly had her school bag, his duffel from his car, and two other grocery bags. Liz felt more than a little guilty as they walked up to the 6th floor of the building, " I can take my school bag if you want, I know its heavy and you already have so much other stuff." Kelly scoffed, "Nah, I'm good, this is nothing compared to lots of stuff I carry or move on a scene, really Liz, it's fine." She smiled, other than her brothers and their friends she hadn't met many people in Chicago who seemed as genuinely nice as the people from District 21, Fire house 51, and Chicago Med. She didn't really get out much though, she had only been back for less than a year and her friend Kate from school, had introduced her to Ryan, then she started grad school and realized all she really had were her friends from school, the grad school friends she was making, and the people her brother's introduced her to, it wasn't a long list., before she knew it they were almost outside of Ryan's door, she and Kelly had made small talk the whole way there and she found him to be pretty funny. She stepped in front of the door and used her key to unlock it, Thanks again for carrying these up for me, I really appreciate it, I can take them from you if you want. Kelly nodded, "Nope, no can do, Jay and Will would want me to help you get all this stuff in the apartment before I go, besides, you would have to make two trips." Liz opened the door, "Okay, if you insist, the kitchen is this way." What or better yet, who she didn't expect to encounter in the kitchen was Ryan, "Liz, whose this?" "Are you bringing random strange men to my house because you didn't think I would be home?" Liz was stunned, so stunned she forgot to speak, so Kelly did "Hey man, I'm Kelly Severide, I live on the 4th floor, I'm a friend of Jay and Will, we just happened to be coming in at the same time and I noticed she was loaded down with bags." Ryan glared at Kelly but Kelly was unfazed, he was more worried about Liz and the way her boyfriend had spoken to her. Ryan, spoke again, "Well let me take those bags from you man, sorry you got stuck helping Liz. It was probably a good call though, she's pretty clumsy and with my luck she would have dropped the bags and I would never get dinner." Liz blushed it was true she wasn't always the most graceful person but she hated that Ryan had to point that out in front of Kelly. Ryan took the bags from Kelly and set them on the counter, let me show you out man and Liz can start putting away the food or maybe cooking. Kelly looked from Ryan to Liz, "I'm going to go but it was good to see you, tell Jay I said hi." Liz smiled, "Thanks again, and I will."
She turned her attention to unpacking her grocery bags and braced for the fight she knew would be coming, Ryan was never home at 4, so why was he today? Liz also knew he was the jealous type, sometimes it was endearing when he got all jealous when another guy looked at her or flirted with her but this time the glare he had given Kelly, it was dark, almost sinister, she wasn't sure why but she just knew he was upset but she hadn't done anything wrong. Ryan returned to the kitchen "Really Liz, you're flirting with my neighbors now, I mean he is a friend of your brothers, don't you think that's a little pathetic when you have a boyfriend. I mean God, that poor guy probably didn't know how to tell you to stop being such a slut and not flirt with him. How are you ever going to show your face at Molly's again with your brothers? Liz felt close to crying, Ryan, I wasn't flirting we were just bringing the groceries up, I had my hands full and was struggling with the door to your building and Kelly said the elevator was out he offered to help, I was just being friendly." Ryan looked at her, "Yeah, well I don't know why you bought so much damn food anyway, I thought you were are that diet we talked about and I know you don't need 3 bags worth of groceries to make me dinner." Liz stammered, she had started the diet that Ryan had suggested, she knew she had been stressed and probably not eating as well as she should and then Ryan pointed out how her favorite jeans didn't look as good anymore, "I did, Ryan I swear, I just I bought organic veggies and some fruit so I could make a salad for both of us and you could have your fish and some rice. I was just planning on eating a salad and some fruit." Ryan looked at Liz, he knew he could make a better person if she would just listen to him, he didn't understand why she had to be so stubborn, plus he hated it when she acted like a little whore and flirted, with other men." Ryan smiled, "Well at least you knew you didn't need a starch to go with your salad, I'm going to shower, I was in back to back meetings until I walked in a few minutes before you, why don't you start getting everything prepared and when I come we can start that discussion we were going to have tonight. He leaned in and kissed her cheek then he whispered, and don't let me catch you flirting with your brothers friend's anymore, I don't like it." Ryan pulled away and started to walked toward his Master bedroom and bathroom, "Yeah, I understand. Enjoy your shower, I will open the wine while your in there and we can both have a glass while we talk." Liz waited until she heard the bedroom door close and then picked up her phone, she opened the email for her professor, she had never missed class and Liz always turned her assignments in early, she hated lying to her professor but there was no way she could go to class tonight, even though it was online, she opened her email and send the following message, Professor McCarty, I am so sorry for the short notice but I can't attend class tonight, I'm in the hospital with a family member. I promise to connect someone in class for the notes, thank you for understanding. Liz knew if worst came to worst and her professor wanted a signed doctor's excuse she could get one her brother was dating a doctor of course. Which reminded Liz she needed to ask Hannah a favor, hopefully she was on shift and not with Will but if she was with Will well Liz could deal with that fallout later.
She opened her texts and sent one to Hannah, L: Hey Hannah! Is my brother treating you well? I need a small favor from my favorite gynecologist. H: Liz, of course Will is treating me well, how's school? I feel like we haven't seen you in forever. What favor do you need from me? Also, I'm your only gynecologist, I know you refuse to see anyone else. I still like hearing I'm your favorite though. L: Well um, I know when I was in for that ovarian cyst a couple of months ago we talked about my PCOS, and you know how hard that makes it to lose weight. I was wondering if you would do me a favor and write me a script for something to help kickstart my weight loss and then please don't mention it to my brother? We both know how he is Will well he's all you look fine, you don't need to lose weight. So I just don't want to fight with him. H: Liz, I don't know the way I remember it your weight was fine, maybe come in tomorrow? I'll clear some time for you and we can talk about it. L:Hannah, I haven't asked you for any favors since you and Will started dating in fact I don't any of you all at MED for favors but I need you to do this for me please. H: Okay, fine, I'll write you 30 days worth of a weight loss pill but on the condition you come in and see me every two weeks to let me do blood work and make sure everything is okay. Also, tell your brother, Will and I don't keep secrets, I don't care that your my patient you're his sister and my first. I'll call it in now. I'm serious tell Will in the next 48 hours or I will. Also, be here Thursday afternoon, I'm taking baseline bloodwork and vitals. L: Thanks Hannah you're amazing. I promise to come by on Thursday. Liz put her phone down and went back to work in the kitchen, maybe these pills would help her start to see some progress and Ryan would be happy. She remembered how her grandmother, always used to say you have to look good so you can keep that man. She knew if she didn't start doing much better she wouldn't have Ryan much longer. Plus like he had told her so many times before, no body besides him would want her, she was just a teacher, she didn't wouldn't ever bring home the money he does. She turned on Youtube to figure out how to make this fish, she didn't eat it and had never cooked it before but she hoped she could do well and make Ryan happy.
