After his first successful surgery of the day, it was about noon when Dong-joo headed out of the operating room and planned to report the positive outcome to Master Kim. As he reached the doorway of his office, he could see through the window that no one was inside. He began to wonder since Master Kim had earlier told that he should come by right after his surgery. In a minute or two, one of the nurses passed by and greeted Dong-joo.
She then kindly informed him, "Dr Kang, you must be looking for Dr Kim? Everyone is hands full at our emergency now because of a three-car collision! Dr Kim has to help out Dr Do, Dr Woo and the others...We can't really get hold of Dr Yoon since she just left the hospital all of a sudden when the patients came in...Dr Kang, if you could help us out, that would be great!"
"Dr Yoon is not in the hospital?" He nodded and rushed quickly to the emergency. At about the same time, he recalled that he had misplaced his cellphone and grew concerned.
Upon stepping into the emergency once again still with his surgery scrubs on, Dong-joo could see the familiar scene of his fellow comrades urgently attending to about a dozen accident patients. It seemed that he has no time to get his white coat on and hurried to grab the stethoscope instead. Then, as he was about to join them and inquire of the nurse which was the next patient needed to be seen, in came a swift and much more familiar figure piggybacking someone yet seemingly of a larger frame than hers...
"Yoon Seo-Jeong!" Dong-joo called out loud in an instant, much to everyone's stunt attention. Nurse Eun-tak nearly dropped a gauze pad and even Dr Kim was distracted by the sudden appearance of Dr Yoon.
Dong-joo immediately ran over but only to be shocked to find that Dr Yoon has brought in his own mother who was definitely very ill. More nurses headed over to their side.
Dr Yoon seemed to lend a deaf ear to Dr Kang and she shouted amidst the weight on her back for an available bed, which unfortunately all had patients occupied. In the midst of the scene and Dr Kang still too dumbfounded to react, she cried out loud again, "Just give me a stretcher for goodness sake!"
The paramedics soon rolled in a comfortable stretcher for Dr Kang's mother. "She's just had a heat syncope...get her vitals, quick, especially the blood pressure!" Dr Yoon ordered and the nurses quickly attended. Still unusually slow to respond, Dr Yoon simply cast a blind eye on Dr Kang that he kept backing off while she rushed about to fetch a couple of cooling blankets and ice packs without delay. When she just managed to get them to place on Dr Kang's mother after removing her outer attire, the nurse still informed of her low blood pressure...Dr Yoon quickly grabbed some sprays to apply cool water mist over her, a few minutes after which only she was beginning to show signs of recovery from unconsciousness. This moment then, Dr Kang was starting to regain his professional alertness...
"Blood pressure now 76/40..." He declared while blinking back tears. Pacing over much closer to the stretcher, he whispered shakily, "Mom, how are you feeling now?"
All this while, Dr Kim was watching attentively from across the aisle while keeping part of his sharp focus on a patient with a broken wrist.
In less than a minute, the paramedics pushed in another two new patients, both who have just encountered a heat stroke...Everyone was once again in the action mode.
