Chapter 2: The Good, The Bad, and The Rowlet!

[Route 1]

"Well Rowlet? Are you excited? Once I make it to the Professor's laboratory I'll be able to register as a real Pokémon Trainer!". The little Pokémon simply hooted in agreement, snuggling into the pack deeper. Tyrelle struggled to looked back at her bag, but was greeted to the cute sight of a snoozing Rowlet and quietly went "aww". Not wanting to waste time, she put a zip in her step but wasn't watching where she was going and bumped into a scary looking kid.

"Watch where you're going." He said coldly, before turning to the tall grass and approaching the cliff. Not wanting to dote on what just happened, Tyrelle starting walking, though it was more like sprinting, back on the path. As she approached the laboratory, she made a mental note of the fact that the lab seemed less like a Pokémon Professor's lab and more like any old house, probably even more so when she got to see the inside.

Knocking on the door, she took a step back and waited. What she was greeted to was completely unexpected. A tired Kukui opened the door, yawned, and then looked down at the kid. He very quickly perked up and cleared his throat. "Ah yes, you seem to be dressed like a rookie trainer, but you don't seem to have had any battles yet. I assume you're here to officially become a trainer?" He asked.

"Yes! That's exactly why I'm here! If I'm not mistaken, you're Professor Kukui, right?" She asked. Kukui nodded and stood aside to let in the soon-to-be trainer. She looked around and silently observed her surroundings, confirming her suspicions of the "lab" being more like a home, and a cozy one at that.

"So um... When do I get my first Pokémon?" Tyrelle finally asked, playing with her long black hair.

Kukui took a sip of his coffee and looked at the girl and laughed. "Well typically, a new trainer would have to get one during this big ceremony thing, but the tradition has sort of...faded, so like any other region's professor I sort of hand them out." He said, sighing at the end.

Tyrelle looked at the 3 Poké Balls on the table thoughtfully, and then suddenly remembered the little spherical owl Pokémon in her backpack. "Well, professor, there's something I should say right now before we get started on that." At that moment, Rowlet decided to spring out of the backpack and fly...straight into the ceiling, before bumping its head on the ceiling with a thud and landing back in the backpack. Tyrelle sweat-dropped and spoke up again. "I actually found this baby Rowlet, who was drawn to my breakfast and decided to stick with me, and on the day I become a trainer too.".

Scratching his head, he laughed. "You know, that reminds me of a... trainer I once had in my care whose own Rowlet decided to follow him, and even took a liking to napping in his backpack.". He once again sighed. "Well, here's your PokéDex and a Poké Ball to catch your little friend." Kukui said, grinning.

Tyrelle excitedly grabbed the Poké Ball and took Rowlet out of the bag carefully. Gripping the Poké Ball, she tapped the button onto Rowlet's head, and it was sucked in. The Poké Ball shook only once and dinged, Rowlet clearly not resisting.

Tyrelle, starry-eyed, held the Poké Ball above her in a pose. "I caught my starter Pokémon!"

Heh, even the way you pose is similar. Kukui thought, before tapping her shoulder to get her attention. "Well, now that that's out of the way, what's your name?" He asked.

Tyrelle bashfully rubbed the back of her neck. "Sorry about that, my name is Tyrelle, pleased to meet you!"

"The pleasure's all mine." Kukui said. He walked over to a Poké Ball that had a Rotom in it, and he grabbed it. "Say, come over here with the PokeDex I gave you just now." He instructed.

Tyrelle quickly walked over to him with the weirdly shaped PokeDex, and Kukui let Rotom out of the Poké Ball. "Alright Tyrelle, this here is Rotom, who isn't really for battling, but for taking control of your PokéDex and making it even better! Once he possesses it, it'll become the Rotom PokéDex! Otherwise called the 'RotomDex' by me."

Rotom flew up and circled the PokeDex before crashing into it and being sucked in, fully possessing the red device. After the screen initialized, Rotom spoke up. "Hello there trainer Tyrelle, pleazzzzed to meet you!" Rotom buzzed.

"Woah! That's so cool!" Tyrelle said in awe. "It's nice to meet you too RotomDex!"

"Tyrelle, are you ready to begin your journey as a Pokémon Trainer? It's a long and arduous journey, but it'll be full of fun as long as you have your Pokémon by your side." Kukui said. Tyrelle simply nodded with a determined look on her face, ready to start her trainer career.

"Well then, the first thing you wanna do is make it to Hau'oli City and from there head to the Pokémon Trainer's School for pointers and further learning, you might just make a new friend too." He said, smiling. Tyrelle, not wanting to waste any more time, nodded and headed off to the destination, pulling out her Town Map from her bag to get an idea of the path she needs to take. Unbeknownst to her, a lone Pichu was silently following behind curiously.

Tyrelle grabbed Rowlet's Poké Ball and let him out to scan the Pokémon. "RotomDex, scan Rowlet please." Tyrelle asked, RotomDex promptly flew out from behind her and took a picture of Rowlet.

"Pleazzzze wait, scanning..." After a second, RotomDex spoke up in a robotic voice.

"Rowlet, the Grass Quill Pokémon. A Grass and Flying type. This Pokémon can silently sneak up on its prey at night and stealthily dish out attacks without being noticed. During the day, it sleeps and takes in energy via photosynthesis, not unlike any old plant."

"Alright, I'm lead to believe that you can also relay its stats, right RotomDex?" Tyrelle inquired.

"Bzzzzt, yes I can do that! Please wait...". After a second, it spoke up once more.

"Rowlet's known moves are as follows: Tackle, Leafage, and most surprisingly is Ominous Wind which is believed to be a move only learned through breeding. Its nature is Hardy, which gives no increase or decrease to base stats, and it has the ability Overgrow which powers up the users Attack and Special Attack power when a Grass type move is used and it's at low health. This Rowlet is male, and it prefers to eat sweet foods." RotomDex explained in detail.

Tyrelle nodded thoughtfully, and picked up the napping Rowlet, who woke up from the sudden movement. "Ominous Wind? That's so cool!"

A youngster approached Tyrelle and cleared his throat to get her attention. "Hey there, my name is Jimmy. We're both newbies, right? Then let's have a battle!"

"U-um, right! My name is Tyrelle, by the way." Tyrelle said, standing up. The youngster, Jimmy apparently, threw his Poké Ball up and out came a Pikipek.

"Alright, I gotta make sure to scan that one after the battle." she said to herself. "Rowlet, come on out!". Rowlet launched out of her backpack and looked at the Woodpecker Pokémon with determination in his eyes.

Trainer Tyrelle Vs. Youngster Jimmy

"Pikipek, use Peck!" Jimmy said, Pikipek rushing toward Rowlet with her beak lit in a white light, preparing to use Peck.

"Dodge it Rowlet, and use Leafage!" Tyrelle shouted, Rowlet quickly launching a barrage of leaves at the Pikipek, which slowed her down. Pikipek landed the Peck anyway, and Rowlet was knocked back but corrected his flight and shook off the pain to show he was ready for more.

"Oh! Get in close and use Tackle!" Tyrelle instructed. Rowlet darted off to Pikipek with the full intention of tackling it. The Youngster panicked and shouted "Growl!", to which Pikipek growled cutely at Rowlet, lowering his Attack stat. Rowlet collided with Pikipek, not doing as much damage as Tyrelle expected.

"Fall back and use Ominous Wind!" Rowlet flew back to the front of his trainer and flapped his wings hard, releasing a gust of dark wind towards Pikipek, who couldn't dodge in time and was hit with the Ghost type move. Rowlet glowed grey for a few seconds, the move increased his stats by one stage.

RotomDex spoke up. "Ominous Wind has a low chance of increasing the Pokémon's Attack, Defense; Speed, Special Attack and Special Defense stats by one stage."

"Pikipek! Can you still battle?" Jimmy asked, concern evident in his voice. Pikipek cawed, before falling to the ground with swirls in its eyes. "Pikipek!" Jimmy shouted, running to the fainted Pokémon.

"We did it...we did it Rowlet! We won our first battle!" Tyrelle said excitedly. The hiding Pichu smiled and looked at Tyrelle thoughtfully.

"Well, we lost fair and square. Here's your prize money." Jimmy said, holding 100 Poke Dollars out to Tyrelle.

"H-huh? I couldn't accept this..." Tyrelle said, bashfully rubbing the back of her head.

"Nonsense, that battle was fun, and you won!" Jimmy said with a toothy grin.

Tyrelle smiled and took the prize money. "Oh that's right, mind if I scan your Pikipek for its RotomDex entry?" Tyrelle asked hopefully.

Jimmy nodded, "Sure.". Tyrelle smiled and RotomDex flew out from her bag and took a picture of Pikipek.

"Pikipek, the Woodpecker Pokémon. A Normal and Flying type. This Pokémon can peck at a tree 16 times a second without breaking a sweat. It can store the seeds of the berries it eats as ammunition." RotomDex buzzed.

"Thanks a bunch!" Tyrelle said. Jimmy grinned and put Pikipek back in its Poké Ball. "I think I should take Pikipek to the nearest Pokémon Center, do you know where it could be?"

Tyrelle took out her Town Map and held it so that the Youngster could see it. "According to my handy map, it should be in Hau'oli City, which is where I'm headed at this moment." Tyrelle stated. Jimmy looked at the map where her finger was pointed at. "Alright, then I'll come with you to get my Pokémon healed!"

"That's fine with me!" Tyrelle smiled. They made their way to the city, without running into a wild Pokémon who wanted a fight.

[Hau'oli City]

"Woohoo! We finally made it!" Tyrelle exclaimed, startling Rowlet in the process. "Oops, sorry Rowlet, you can take a nap in peace." Tyrelle sweat-dropped. Eyeing the surroundings, she finally spots the Pokémon Center and decides to walk there with Jimmy, who followed closely behind.

The Pichu from before decided that to explore the city on its lonesome before finding some tasty looking wires behind the Pokémon Trainer's School.

Walking into the Pokémon Center, they immediately noticed how peaceful the atmosphere was, which was enough to calm Rowlet down from a nightmare it seemed to be having.

"Good afternoon, welcome to the Pokémon Center! I'm Nurse Joy, and I'll heal up your Pokémon!" Nurse Joy said with a polite smile.

"Hello Nurse Joy, I would like to heal my Pikipek again." Jimmy spoke up, walking forwards.

"Oh my, another battle with your Pikipek? I'll have her healed in no time at all." Joy said, taking her Poké Ball. "And what about you, miss?" She said, looking at Jimmy.

"I'll have my Rowlet healed, and I'm the one who battled his Pikipek and won!" She said triumphantly, handing over Rowlet.

"Thank you, I'll have both of your Pokémon healed shortly." She said, bowing and taking both Pokémon to the back.

"Say, Tyrelle, what's up with Rowlet and sleeping in your backpack?" Jimmy asked curiously.

"Well, he prefers to sleep in there, so I just kind of let him, I don't really mind at all." She said. "So, you've battled before?" She spoke up.

"Eheheh, well yeah, but I always lost each time, though I'd like to think I'm getting better." He said sheepishly. At that moment, the tone went off signalling that the Pokemon have been healed, and Nurse Joy came walking out from the back with their Pokemon.

"There, good as new and fighting fit! And Jimmy, try not to overwork your Pikipek in future battles." She said.

Jimmy sweat-dropped. "Got it."

"And, what's your name?" Nurse Joy asked Tyrelle.

"I'm Tyrelle, and I aim to be the greatest Pokémon Master!" She said smiling widely. Nurse Joy sweat-dropped. "Well, Tyrelle, your Rowlet is in good condition, they both just need some rest." She said, looking at both trainers.

"Right." Jimmy and Tyrelle said at the same time.

Tyrelle looked at Jimmy. "Well, this is where we part ways, I'm going to explore this island more and follow the path I've planned." She said. Jimmy nodded.

"Thanks for the battle, I hope we can battle again some day." He said with a hopeful smile. Tyrelle held her hand out and said "It's a done deal.". Jimmy shook her hand and they both headed out of the building.

Jimmy took off back to Route 1 while Tyrelle made her way to the Pokémon Trainers' School as suggested by Professor Kukui. When she arrived, she stood at a blackboard listing status effects, when all of a sudden the lights went off and there were terrified screams.

What's this? As Tyrelle arrived at the Pokemon Trainers' School the lights went off. What happened? What will she do? Find out next time on Pokémon Stars Version, as the journey continues!
