Sirius

Precisely one year, three months, two weeks, and eight days before, Sirius had stood on an empty London street, a lighter in his hand. He slashed the flame across his cigarette and stuffed it into his mouth, blowing hard. He watched as the smoke coiled above his head.

"A shaggy haired boy in a leather jacket, smoking a cigarette... Do you fancy yourself some sort of rebel?" came a drawling voice from behind him.

Sirius spun around and found a girl in rather tight Muggle clothes standing there, smirking, her blonde hair drawn up into a ponytail. She was quite beautiful—no, very beautiful, and he found himself grinning like an idiot before he could stop himself. "Why, yes I do," he said smugly. "But anyone would when they had a family like mine..." He gave a longing sigh, his eyes rolled dramatically as if he were begging for help from some heavenly force.

"Ah, so the angsty rebel type? Classic."

The girl inched closer to him, and he felt his neck beginning to grow warmer and warmer.

"What's your name?" he asked before he could stop himself.

"Julienne Peters."

"Peters... Peters... I have a friend name Peter," he said. Julienne. It was perfect, it was beautiful, it was the loveliest name he had ever heard.

"Oh, yeah? What's he like?"

"He's a funny little bloke. He lacks confidence, he's insecure, he does anything you tell him to, but he's loyal and he...he has a good heart. He's just kind of quiet, that's all."

"What school do you go to?"

"Oh... uhm..." This girl was obviously a Muggle, or non magical folk, so he couldn't tell her about Hogwarts, where all young witches and wizards went. It was against Wizarding law to tell a Muggle about Hogwarts. But then again, Sirius wasn't the best liar, either.

"Oh, I see. You must be nervous because it's not a very good school and you're worried I'll judge you."

Relief washed over Sirius. "Yes, that's it."

"I see. Well, Mr. Angsty Rebel, I'm afraid it's well past my curfew, so I suppose I ought to be going now. But if you ever need a friend..." She took out a piece of paper and handed it to him. "...here's my number."

And before Sirius could process what was happening, Julienne walked away.
