Chapter 2: Come Home

Jay Halstead and Erin Lindsay never had what one would call a 'normal relationship'. Over their short relationship they had a lot of ups and downs and some more ups and downs, but they always got through it, because they had each other. But not anymore.

It had been a month since Jay had packed a few tees and jeans and told her he didn't want to go but still left, which confused her. She couldn't wrap her head around it. They loved each other. So why would he leave her? She told him she could handle this whole marriage situation with Abby, but he still left.

Even Voight noticed the tension between the couple. He spilt the two up and paired Jay with Al and Erin with new girl, Detective Hailey Upton. And if Erin were being honest, they were a pretty badass team, but she of course missed Jay. Erin really liked Hailey. She even saved Erins ass when Erin assaulted a suspect, because if Upton hadn't, she'd probably would be sitting in an orange jumpsuit in cell block H, never mind loosing her badge, but Hailey saved both for her. On the other hand, the team were still a bit iffy when it came to having a new member on their team. She was a good, clean cop and intelligence had their own, not so legal way of doing things. But Erin knew she could trust her.

"I have something to tell you's" Sargent Voight's voice boomed as he came out of his office. He eyed his team. Jay and Mouse were chatting over Jays desk about a buddy from the armys, recent enrollment in the policing academy. Ruzek and Atwater were being childish as always, watching funny fail videos on YouTube, Erin and Hailey were at Erins desk, strolling through God knows what on Lindsays phone, and then Al was head down catching up on paperwork. Everyone looked up to see what their Sargent had to say. "Burgess will be back on Monday, also Antonio's coming back, apparently the the district attorney's office is not for him." The bullpen cheered. Everyone was so upset when Antonio left, and Antonio was a brother to them all so it'd be good to have him back, also it'd been ages since they'd seen Kim and they all missed her and couldn't wait to find out how her sister was doing.

"Upton can I speak to you?" Upton got of the chair at Lindsays desk and followed Hank into his office and closed the door. "Guess it's time to go back to robbery-homicide" she smiled. She was sort of disappointed, this was a much better opportunity. "Actually, I know this units only a small one but I think there's room for one more" he grinned. Upton looked at him confused. "Hailey, you're a good cop, I want you in this unit." The blonde detective smiled. "Sarge, I um" she nervously giggled. "Sleep on it, and I'll hope to see you bright and early on Monday morning." Hailey nodded and smiled. "Dismissed" he said and she got up and headed out to the bulllen, expecting to see everyone, but it was only Erin left. "Where is everyone?" Upton asked putting her coat on. "Mollys, celebrating the guys coming back. What did Hank say?" Hailey just smiled. "He um offered me a spot in the unit" Erin was surprised by that. "Really?" She asked. Hailey nodded. "Are you gonna-" Erin was interrupted. "I don't know, I feel like I'm intruding." Erin looked at her confused. "I need to be in a unit where I can trust the people in it with my life, I don't feel very liked in this unit." Erin smiled softly. "Hails" Erin put her hand on Uptons shoulders. "You can trust them, I swear, they're just weird about newbies, they'll love you by next week." Hailey didn't see what she was getting at, Erin sighed, as she lowered her voice. "This unit operates like no other unit and they just needed to know that you're okay with it, it can't be easy to be a normal unit and then suddenly have us, plus you've proven yourself, you saved my ass."

Erin laughed. Upton laughed and nodded, understanding what she was saying. "You're right and I do. I understand." Erin smiled, she wanted her to stay. "Good, looks like we're raising 3 glasses at Molly's" Upton laughed. "Right I just need to run to the ladies and we can get going." Erin said, sliding her coat on. "Yeah I'll just tell the sarge I'm in" Upton smiled, she was excited for this new journey she was about to embark on. The two women nodded and went to their thing.

Walking into the locker room, she didn't expect to see him. She thought he was already in Molly's. He was sitting with his head in his hands as if he were blocking out some sort of noise. "Jay" Erin said even so softly. When he didn't hear her, she gently placed her hand on his shoulder, in which he jumped at her soft touch. "Sorry I didn't mean to scare you." Erin smiled, ever so soft. 'God she was so so beautiful' Jay thought. "You didn't, I'm fine." Jay sighed, not a bit of emotion in his voice. "You coming to Molly's" she asked hopeful. They never went on the same night anymore. He didn't answer. Erin was fed up, she tried to reach out multiple times but he wouldn't budge. He was dead to the world. She can't blame him though. She felt dead too. But she's not waiting around anymore.

"Jay, I want you to come home." He didn't answer.

"Jay" still no answer. He kept his head down, staring down at the ground. His face totally blank.

"Babe" she saw him flinch at the name in which she hasn't used with him in weeks. "I know you're going through stuff." Jay was recently involved in a shootout that killed at little girl. "But please, I need you to come home to me." Tears brimmed in her eyes and her voice cracked at 'home to me.'

She decided maybe a change into a lighter topic might be better. "Haileys going to join intelligence." She smiled. "She's a good cop." Jay still didn't showing any signs that he was listening, that he cared.

"Jay it's not everyday I'll admit I need someone." Tears streaming down her cheeks. "But I need you, because I-I" her not being able to find words. "I don't want to know who I am without you, Jay." Her voice low. She didn't. She didn't want to know who she was without him. Because who was she without him? The last time they were separated, after Nadia died, things didn't go so well. She knew she wouldn't go down that rabbit hole anymore. She had a new drug. Jay. Jay Halstead was her drug. If you told her 5 years ago, she'd depend on a man for her wellbeing, she'd laugh at you. "Jay please talk to me." Her soft cry's turning to sobs. "Baby, please." She sat down beside him, him still not looking at her. "Jay look at me." Her voice stronger.

That's when she saw it. A single tear slide down his cheek, was she getting through? "Jay" no answer. "Jay, do you still even love me, or was this just a fling for you?" The word hit him like a slap in the face. When there was no reply, she did as she's been doing since the first man, her father , broke her heart. Picked herself up, dusted herself off. She cleared her throat and wiped her eyes. "You should pick your things up." and with that she walked out, hearing Jays sobs, hoping she didn't let Hailey wait too long.

As she walked out into the bullpen, Hailey was just leaving Hanks office. "Ready?" Upton asked. Erin just nodded. "You alright?" Hailey noticed Erins change in demeanor. "Yeah, long day I guess." She seemed to accept that answer and the pair walked to Molly's.

"To Tony and Burgess coming home." The whole gang at Molly's cheered. Firefighters, doctors and cops cheered to have the two regulars back. "And also lets give a big Molly's welcome to Detective Upton!" Adam cheered, as did everyone else, besides two detectives.

When Erin and Hailey walked into Molly's, Erin was surprised to see Jay there. They pair sat as far from one another as possible. Erin would of happily left but she knew everyone had suspicions with her and Jay and she wasn't prepared or in the mood for questions, so she spent the night speaking to all her girlfriends. Erin, Kim, Natalie, Sylvie and Gabby were all really close, and had girls night every Friday night, so of course the girls invited Hailey to the next girls night, in which Hailey offered to host. Erin tried to be involved as much as possible in the conversation, but her eyes kept drifting to Jay at the bar with Will. Will was laughing with Herman, but Jay was just swirling his beer bottle. She knew she'd hurt him. They never officially broke up, but Erin telling him he should pick his things up definitely confirmed it.

"Earth to Erin." Sylvie laughed. "Oh sorry." Erin smiled. The girls weren't really clued in on her and Jays breakup, maybe breakup? Kim was gone from intelligence for a while so she would have no clue what was going on, and Hailey wasn't in the unit long enough, and the 3 other girls, she didn't see enough for them to see her and Jay on a daily basis so they'd be clueless to. "Do you've a pad or tampon, just started and I'm not prepared." Sylvie cringed. Erin smiled "yeah sure" and reached into her bag and gave her a tampon. "Lifesaver!" Sylvie squealed and ran off to the ladies.

"Right girls, it's time for me to hit the road." Kim groaned. "Calling it a night Lindsay!? I'm just back!" Erin smiled at her friend. "Goodnight Kim" she smiled. "Bye guys!" She waved to her team, and opened the door, the cold Chicago breeze hitting her face, as she variations of goodbye from her friends.

As she was walking to her car, something hit her. Her heart started beating faster than would be healthy. She cursed Sylvie for asking for a tampon, because if she hadn't, she wouldn't of realised she was late.
