AN: I'll post chapter three after I watched the season 16 finale so I know where the direction of the story is. This chapter is a bit mellow. I am trying to get it to CROWEN as soon as possible.
Chapter 2: I Like Me Better
It was like any other mornings at Meredith Grey's house. Pregnant sister, Maggie was on-call, and a new boarder at her house. Well, the boarder wasn't permanent. She got up and went down to make some breakfast for everyone but as soon as she descended at her kitchen, she smelled freshly cooked pancakes and coffee. She thought Amelia might be up early but another dark haired was cooking in her kitchen. It was Gabby.
"Well, you're early. And you cook. I knew you somehow cook but I didn't knew you cook, cook."
"Good Morning. Sorry I intruded on your kitchen and I got to meet little Miss Zola right here and we got hungry. I don't know what Cristina tells you but I do cook. I cook for her. How do you think she's still alive and healthy?" Gabby served Meredith some pancakes with blueberries on top and coffee.
"Good point." She turned to Zola who apparently helped Gabby at the kitchen early in the morning. "I see you met my early bird. Good morning sweetie, did you sleep well?" Gabby and Zola both took their seats at the table with their pancakes.
"The first thing she said to me while I was lying on the couch and looking at my phone was 'YOU MUST BE GABBY!' I almost peed my pants because she suddenly came out of nowhere. So were both up and hungry that's when we decided to cook some breakfast for everybody."
Meredith smiled at Zola. "Yeah she does that a lot and that's why she knows everybody's secrets."
"Do I smell real food?" A really pregnant Amelia walked in and apparently not noticing their house guest right away. She grabbed Meredith's fork and took a piece at her food.
"Hey get your own!" Meredith slapped her hand. That's when Amelia noticed the house guest.
"Hi! Meredith, who is she?" Amelia grabbed some pancakes and coffee at the counter and took her seat.
"Hi, I'm Gabby." She smiled at Amelia. "I actually made those for everybody."
"Really? They're good. Mer, we should keep her." Munching a whole pancake into her mouth.
"She's temporary. She has her own apartment to find. She's Gabriella Yang and she will be a new resident at the hospital." Meredith explained.
"Wait, Yang? What's up with you and Cristina?" Amelia asked.
"The cardio witch is my sister." Gabby replied.
"Ohhhhh. Well, welcome to the program." Amelia stood up as she finished her food. "I will take a shower now."
"Gabby, you can shower first in my bathroom. I have to take care of Bailey and Ellis for school." Meredith looked at Zola. "Honey, can you help Gabby please?"
"Sure mom. Let's go Gabby." Zola grabbed Gabby's hand.
"Thanks for the breakfast." Meredith said.
Everybody went on their busy morning as Gabby got ready for her first day at the hospital and Meredith prepared her kids for school and daycare. Amelia was almost finished getting dressed when Mer peaked at her bedroom door.
"Hey, can Gabby ride with you at the hospital? I have to take the kids to school."
"Wow, ride too? Isn't she special?" Amelia answered with a sarcastic tone.
"Come on. She's Cristina's sister. Cristina asked me to look for her. Cristina is my person and my sister so she comes along with the package. So please, can she ride with you?"
"Fine. She cooked yummy breakfast so I can drive her. I just thought it was weird that you were too nice. Now I know why."
"I can be nice without being weird."
"Really?" Amelia replied.
Meredith's eyes squinted and left her room. Everybody went on their separate ways. Gabby rode with Amelia to the hospital.
"So why did you decide to switch programs? I mean Zurich was already cool, why here?" Amelia asked to remove some of the awkward atmosphere in the car.
"I needed to stand on my own where people don't view me as a board member of the hospital. I need the attendings to view me as a resident to teach, not favoring me because I could pitch and grant them money for their research."
"You're a board member there?" Amelia asked.
"Yeah. Cristina made me because she needed one. Grey Sloan was actually my first choice of residency when I finished med school but my mother pushed me to go to Zurich instead. Cristina was annoyed at first but we got along well."
"I get it. Just use whatever you learned there and make the most out of it. Well, welcome to Seattle. You made a great choice to be here." Amelia pulled over. "We're here! Goodluck to you."
"Thank you and thank you for the ride." Gabby removed her seatbelt and hopped out of the car.
The both of them proceeded at their separate destinations. Amelia went to the attendings' lounge and Gabby tried to find the Chief of Surgery's office. As usual Gabby got lost and thinking maybe Cristina was right about her sense of direction which made her smile. As she was reading her application later, she bumped into a guy and dropped whatever she was holding.
"Ooof, sorry." Gabby picked up the paper she was reading.
"Woah will you watch where you were going." The guy helped him and held her shoulders to help her stand.
"Sorry um, Dr.-" Looking at his name tag in his lab coat. "Dr. Koracick. Chief. Medical… Officer…" Slowly releasing the words, she realized whom she bumped into. "Sorry." Gabby added.
"Oh no worries. We're you visiting someone?" Tom assumed she was visiting a patient.
"Uhm, no. Actually I am new here. I am looking for Dr. Bailey's office. I think I'm lost. As my sister said, I have no sense of direction in which I am starting to believe that it's true."
Tom chuckled. "I'll help you. Since, I'm going on that direction anyway." They started walking towards Dr. Bailey's office.
"Thank you. Wait, Koracick. You are Dr. Tom Koracick. You were head of neuro back in Hopkins. You are like the go-to neuro here at US along with Dr. Shepherd."
"Ow, are you a stalker now or my number one fan?" Tom jokingly asked.
Gabby laughed. "No and No. I am actually looking for neuro as my specialty but I am still keeping my options open."
"Touché. I would have been happier if you were my fan." They stopped in front of a door. Tom pointed it and said "So, this is Dr. Bailey's office. And, I'll see you around... um" He was wondering what was her name.
"It's Doctor Gabriella Yang. But Gabby is fine if were not in work related circumstances." Gabby answered.
"I think I'm going to be looking forward for those unrelated work circumstances. But for now, I am looking forward for you to be in my service." Tom gave her a hand shake.
"Thank you Doctor Koracick. It was nice meeting you." Gabby gave him a handshake and a sweet smile.
Tom left and Gabby knocked at Dr. Bailey's office. Tom turned around one last time to glimpse at the new doctor. She was confident he thought and he really liked that.
Gabby knocked and heard through the door. "Come in."
"Hello, Dr. Bailey? I'm Gabriella Yang. The transferee from Klausman Institute of Medical Research at Zurich, Switzerland. I'm here to hand in my application forms and letters of recommendations." Gabby entered the room.
"Ahhh yes. I was expecting you. Please, have a sit." Gabby took a seat while Dr. Bailey was skimming through her recommendation letters. "I see you have a quite a list of doctors giving you recommendation letters." She closed the papers and looked at her.
"You're a fourth year. In two years you'll be taking your boards, do you have a specialty in mind already? I would not be surprise if it is cardio since your previous hospital was center for cardiothoracic research." Dr. Bailey asked.
"Ahhh, no. I haven't full decided yet. But, I have been thinking of pediatric surgery or neuro. I'm still keeping my options open." Gabby answered.
"Wow, that's new. A lost surgeon who doesn't know her specialty. Cardiothoracic isn't on the list?" Dr. Bailey asked again.
"Like I said, I'm still keeping my options. Hopefully I could decide my specialty here. Klausman was a fantastic teaching hospital but this is the reason why I left the program there. I cannot decide my specialty. People are expecting me to not choose Cardio because there's already a Dr. Yang on the field. They're betting I'll be on my sister's shadows."
"Well, I hope you'll have clear view of what you want here." While having their little interview, Dr. Levi Schmitt walked in. "Aaaah yes, just in time. Dr. Yang, this is Dr. Schmitt, an intern and he will lead you to the resident's lounge and get you some scrubs. Welcome to the program." Dr. Bailey stood up and shook hands with Gabby.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Schmitt." Levi smiled at her.
"Yeah, I heard. Now, point me to the residents' lounge and get me my scrubs." Acknowledging Levi as an intern.
Gabby wore her fresh new blue scrubs. The chief resident said that she was assigned with Dr. Hunt today at the pit. She knew Dr. Hunt was her sister's ex-husband but she never actually met him in person. As she walked to the pit, she immediately recognized Dr. Hunt because of the pictures her sister had on her room and office. Sometimes, people who come to Cristina's office think she was still married because of the pictures.
She grabbed some gloves and gowns and approached Owen.
"Dr. Hunt, I'm on your service for today." Owen turned around and observed the new doctor. Her face reminded him of a very important person in his life.
"I've never seen you before." Owen said.
"I'm new. I'm Dr. Yang." Gabby blurted it out forwardly.
"Dr. Yang? I don't know if this is some coincidence because you obviously resemble a bit of her. Perhaps you are Cristina's younger sister."
"Yes, I am and as I said, I am on your service for today. And it's Gabriella Yang but everybody calls me Gabby."
Owen was a bit shocked. He knew Cristina had a sister but he never saw her. He knew that she also went to med school but looking at her in this moment made him missed her deeply.
"Well, I was Cristina's uhm…" Owen couldn't explained it well. Besides being the ex-husband, their relationship was far complicated than that.
"Ex-husband. Ex-lover. Whatever. I actually know you. My sister talked about you and I've seen some pictures." Gabby said.
Owen couldn't believe what he was hearing. Cristina actually kept some pictures and told her sister about him. Their little conversation was interrupted when the ambulance came in.
"We have an incoming trauma. I guess this is your lucky day."
They approached the ambulance and opened its doors.
"What do we got?" Owen asked.
"Cory Delgado, 30, was hiking with his wife then fell really bad. BP is 70 palp in the field and started two large-bore IV's." A woman was along with them. She was the wife of the man.
"Cory, cory honey. I'm here. We shouldn't have gone hiking."
"Let's go Yang. Ask the wife if she retained any injuries."
"Hello Ma'am, I'm Dr. Yang. Are you hurt? Did you fell too?"
"No. I'm okay. Please let me be with Cory. I needed to be with my husband. This is my fault. I insisted to hike today but he didn't want to. I wanted us to have some memories then this happen. I need to be with him please. He hates hospitals. He's scared of it."
"Ma'am what's your name?" Gabby asked.
"I'm Lisa."
"Okay Lisa, listen. Dr. Hunt is an excellent surgeon so your husband is in good hands but you can't be in there. You wait here while we fix him. Okay?"
Lisa nodded and the nurse guided her to the waiting room. Gabby entered the cramped trauma room and jumped in to help.
"Dr. Hunt systolic's 60. The pressure's dropping."
"Abdomen is distended and he has a lot of internal bleeding. Let's get him to the OR. Quickly!" Owen said. "Yang no time to scrub, come on. We need to get in there."
Meanwhile, at the resident's lounge, Meredith was having her lunch at the table while talking to Cristina.
"Hey, you about to go to bed?" Meredith asked.
"Yeah. So what's up? Is Gabby already annoying you? I can send her back to Beverly Hills." They laughed.
"Come on you can ask me about her. I know you're worried."
"No, I'm not."
"You love her. She's your sister and you are worried. She reminds me of Lexie. A lot." Meredith exclaimed.
"Yeah. She does. She isn't damaged because she never got to go the grief I went through when I was a kid. That's why she's a bit like Lexie." Cristina answered.
"Even though you wouldn't admit that you want to ask how your sister is, she's coping well. I kind of want to keep her. She cooks you know well you know."
"She cooked those blueberry pancakes? That's the only delicious thing she can cook. The rest are bland." They laughed at that statement.
"I heard she was on Owen's service today. Does she know Owen?" Meredith asked.
"Yes. She knows about him. I hope she doesn't spill some things we talked about. She's massive blower of secrets."
"Anyways, I really miss you. I wish we can dance it out on the same time zone. Alex has been missing for some quite of time. I've been trying to reach him. Have you heard from him yet?"
"No. I'll try to contact him too. Hey listen, I need to sleep now. I have a busy day tomorrow. I wish we could talk more. It's really late now here."
"Okay. Text me. I have rounds anyways. Bye." The screen went black.
Back at the OR, Owen and Gabby were operating at their patient.
"Laps, more laps. Laps! Yang suction, I can't see anything."
"I'm suctioning. Suction's too slow."
"Use your hands." Owen said.
"How's his pressure?" Gabby asked the anesthesiologist. "79 over 40"
"He's like a bucket full of holes."
"I'm going to occlude the aorta so we can get his pressure back up. How many units has he gotten?" Owen asked.
"Three units of o-neg and one unit of FFP. Let's get some more packs." Gabby said.
"Let's try and isolate this bleeder until we figure out what we're dealing with. Laps. More!"
"Dr. Hunt, BP is still 70. With all these lap pads, it should be better by now. His pelvis and his spleen look clean."
"Maybe it's the liver. Try pringle maneuver. Let's see if we can stop this bleeding." Owen said.
"I have a plan. Let's crack his chest put in a shunt and bypass the blood flow trying to get to the heart. It'll give us time to make the repair."
Amelia was looking some scans in the room when Koracick walked in.
"There's a new resident and I think she's flirting with me."
Amelia laughed and then it hit her, the new resident was Gabby.
"Wait. Gabby. You're talking about Gabby. Oh no. Hell no Tom."
"You know her?" Tom asked.
"She's Cristina Yang's sister. That makes her Meredith's sister by association. Hands off Tom. I mean it. And she's like Owen's ex-sister-in-law."
"Wait, Hunt was married?"
"Yes. He was married to Cristina Yang." Amelia said.
"Harper-Avery nominee, Cristina Yang? She should have won that award. Anyways, I just said she was flirting with me. I wasn't."
"Really, are you sure she was flirting and not your ego? And how the hell did you meet her? It's her freaking first day." Amelia asked.
"I bumped into her and she couldn't find Dr. Bailey's office so I helped her."
Amelia looked at him with disbelief. "You were the one flirting with her. I mean it, hands off Tom."
Tom couldn't continue the argument anymore. Meanwhile back in the scrub room. The surgery went well and they saved the man's life.
"That was amazing. Bypassing the patient was a great move Dr. Hunt." Gabby said.
"Good. It was nice getting to work with you Dr. Yang. Check the patient and assign somebody whose on-call to make sure he gets through the night."
"Yes Dr. Hunt." Gabby left the scrub room.
Owen was left with deep thoughts as Gabby left. He kept thinking that Cristina still talked about him to her sister. He always wanted to know how was she but never got the courage to call or text her or even ask Meredith because he knew, the moment they start to talk, he will come running right back to her. He didn't want to compromise what he has now with Teddy. They were getting married and sometimes, having these thoughts made him think that he was cheating on Teddy with Cristina because, at the end of the day, Cristina was his soulmate.
Gabby asked Levi the whereabouts of Meredith.
"Last time I saw her she was in the Attendings' Lounge."
As she peeked through, she first got a glimpse of Tom, she smiled at him and he did the same. Amelia interrupted with a disapproving look on her face to Tom.
"Can I talk to Dr. Grey?" Gabby asked and Meredith went outside.
"Let's go?" Meredith asked. She offered some help to Gabby to help her settle in.
"You have kids. You don't have to do this for me. They sent the car already and its outside. I'll just grab my things at your house and find the apartment myself. I have GPS you know. I'm not going to get lost." Gabby said.
"Wow you have a car already. Your mother sure is fast. Are you sure of not getting lost? I mean, Maggie can take the kids and I can help you." Meredith said.
"You've been kind and it is 'weirding' me out it because Cristina said you two are alike and Cristina never insisted of helping me. So, it makes me think she's lying."
"You're Cristina's sister. I am okay with helping you." Meredith insisted.
"I'm going to call you by your name so… Meredith. I'm fine. I'll be fine. If I get lost, I have my phone and I'll call you right away."
Meredith was defeated. She promised Cristina that she was going to help her until she settled in her apartment but she lost.
"Thank you so much for everything. I'll see you tomorrow."
After lots of driving, she finally found her apartment. She settled her things and laid down at her bed. This was her first night of being alone. She was sad but happy at the same time. She got to learn new things today. But most of all, her thoughts went to Owen Hunt. She was curious about him and he made her nervous too. She kept thinking the other person back in Zurich on how it got to this point. She hoped that she can keep her mouth shut and keep her distance away from Owen because knowing him more could make things ever more complicated for all of them.
AN 2: I hope you like this very long chapter. The medical stuff was on previous episodes of Grey's Anatomy. I just rephrased them. Please leave a review it keeps me going.
