Chapter 2 Sympathy

Wendy waited eagerly next to the door. Actually, to be more accurate, she was waiting impatiently next to the door. Her order was due to come today, and she was very excited about it. She had been anticipating its arrival for the past month, and today was finally the day! The only problem was that time seemed to be moving at a snail's pace.

Come on, where is that mailman? Wendy thought to herself. Seriously, if she had to wait another hour...heck, if she had to wait another minute, she would explode with frustration.

Ah, thank goodness. Wendy heard a knock on the front door. She opened it in anticipation, and squealed in delight when she saw the mailman standing on the other side.

"I have a package for Miss Wendy Orville Koopa."

"Yes! That's me!" Wendy cried excitedly. The mailman handed her the package, and Wendy was so happy that it was literally impossible to keep her body still.

"Okay, Miss Koopa," the mailman said. "If you could just sign…."

SLAM!

Wendy ran like a bandit away from the door, her package clutched in her hot little hands. She giggled giddly; it was finally here! Her dress was finally here!

"Oh, I can't wait to get this thing open!"

Wendy rushed up to her room and slammed the door. She started rummaging around in her junk drawer and came back out with a pair of scissors. With the scissors in hand, she started to hack away at the tape separating her from the contents of her package. When she finally got open, she gasped.

"Oh my developer," she said. She picked up the dress and held it in awe. "It's beautiful!"

And it was. The dress was a baby pink and had designs of roses along the skirt. There were also sparkling beads on the top half of the dress, making it sparkle like a lake in the moonlight. On top of that, it was strapless. Wendy loved strapless.

Wendy put the dress on, being careful with the delicate fabric. Once it was safely on and completely zipped up, Wendy admired herself in the mirror.

"Yes, yes, a million times yes!" Wendy said with a giggle. "I have to show Bowser; he's going to love this!"

Wendy barged out her bedroom door, not even bothering to put on her high heels. She raced down the hallways, holding up the skirt of the dress so it wouldn't get dirty. Unfortunately, she was going so fast that when she turned the corner, she bumped straight into Larry.

"Oh, sorry Larry!" Wendy said to her youngest brother.

"It's okay."

Wendy stopped moving and turned toward Larry, surprised by his sullen tone.

"Hey, are you alright?" she asked. Larry hesitated for just a second before sighing.

"Yeah, I'm alright."

Wendy frowned as Larry walked away from her, his head buried in his phone. While his words said one thing, his tone said something completely different. Concerned, she approached her brother and put his hand on his shoulder.

"Come on, buddy, what's the matter?"

Larry shook his head.

"It's nothing. It's just…" Larry sighed and turned around. "Okay, I'm gonna be real with you. I'm upset because Mother's Day is tomorrow."

"Why would that make you upset?" Wendy asked.

"Well, it's kind of hard to explain," Larry began. "But...well, everyone always makes a big deal about Mother's Day. And, well, seeing how I don't have a mom, I just feel...left out."

Wendy began to understand. She looked at Larry sadly.

"I know how you feel," she said. "I mean, I know what you're supposed to do on the day, but because I have no one to do it with, it just seems foreign."

"Yeah! Exactly!" Larry exclaimed. He looked down at the floor, his cerulean eyes hesitant and sad. "I just wish there was a way that I could find out who our mom is."

Wendy nodded, feeling increasingly sorry for her little brother.

"I'm sorry you feel that way, Larry. But, seeing how no one saw our mother, finding her is going to be downright impossible."

Wendy thought she saw a light bulb go off in Larry's head. He stared at her with wide eyes.

"I bet Ludwig saw her," he said excitedly.
