Chapter One: The Beast
"Jacket, huh?" Rize giggled. "That's a funny name."
Jacket looked at the cassette player bewildered; it played the exact sentence that he previously thought. He pressed the play button again.
"I think this/ cassette player/ can read/ my thoughts," said the artificial voice, making sudden stops and rewinds as it voiced the sentence.
A small smile appeared on his face; he could finally speak. Jacket always felt left out when the people around him were able to communicate their thoughts and feelings to other people. It was hard for him to try to socialize with others, in conversations he either wrote down his words on some paper or didn't say anything at all. This frustrated him to no end, he felt as if he was confined to himself, unable to share his thoughts and emotions, and isolated from everyone else. With that special cassette player, he could finally have that chance, even if it had that strange voice.
Rize stared at recorder, fascinated with how it worked. "That's some unique thing you got there, I didn't think something like that existed," she commented. "You're really not from around here," the Japanese girl added.
"Yes! Correct," the blonde replied.
She chuckled, finding the jovial female voice amusing. "Since you're new to Tokyo, I could show you around and get you acquainted with the place. I'm sure we'd get to know each other even more. What do you say?" Rize inquired, as she gave Jacket a small grin.
"The offer/ sounds tempting /but I will have to politely decline/ your offer," he answered, as he slowly got off the bench.
The girl frowned, disappointed with his decision. She seemed very eager to get Jacket to walk with her. Rize sighed, "That's too bad… But I guess another time, right?"
A small smile appeared on Jacket's face. "Well/ I'll see you around," he said, as the blonde waved goodbye. She laughed a bit and did likewise.
Once she was out of sight, Jacket went off by himself to look for a place to stay. It seemed like a better idea to go with Rize, but he felt something off about her. The way that she looked and talked to him didn't seem flirtatious, she looked him as he was a piece of meat, something to be eaten.
As he walked through the crowded streets, he saw a decent hotel across the street from him. Just as he thought the night was turning in his favor, he started digging around his pockets to see if the Three left him a wallet or some cash. Jacket had no luck; all he could find was a lighter and a slightly bent cigarette. He sighed deeply, he was broke and had no roof over his head. He sauntered off into a nearby alley to smoke. The blonde put the cig in his mouth and tried to light it, getting more frustrated at each time the lighter failed to ignite.
As soon as it fired up, a small white animal snatched his lighter and ran in deeper into the alley. He ran off after the thing, he was already having a bad night, smoking was the only thing that could make it somewhat bearable. The animal made several sharp turns, almost making Jacket slip in his chase for his lighter.
He eventually got to a dead end with a faint light that shined on the small animal he was chasing. It was a chicken; it held the lighter in its beak and its eyes darted around frantically. Jacket gave a look of surprise; he just chased a chicken that stole his lighter, he walked closer to it. The rooster suddenly stood still and stared at Jacket, making him stop in his tracks. It began cluck and its eyes started to glow a bright yellow. He backed away, but the bird's noises got louder and louder.
Jacket covered his ears as the sounds became unbearable. He fell on his knees and closed his eyes, the clucking becoming almost deafening. When he thought he was about to go deaf, it suddenly stopped. He opened his eyes reluctantly and saw that the rooster disappeared. The blonde stood up, but he felt extremely hungry, as went week without eating. He grabbed his lighter and turned around to make his way out of the alley. He saw a young man in front of him, giving Jacket a wide grin.
"You look hungry, but I think I'm hungrier," the man joked, as he slowly approached him. "You look weak, this should be easy."
The young man eyes changed colors, his irises turning red and his sclera becoming black. He dashed towards Jacket and tried to tackle him, but he narrowly dodged. His movements were sluggish, and he had some difficulty standing up, the hunger was getting the better of him.
The man looked annoyed, seeing his prey trying to put up a height, "C'mon dude, don't make this harder than it should be. You should know that you don't stand a chance against a ghoul." Dark red tentacles formed on the back of the man and he pointed them at Jacket, who propped himself up against a wall.
Jacket looked to his side and saw a set of pipes that were attached to the wall. He glanced back at the ghoul was poised to attack. He evaded the ghoul's tentacles, ripped a pipe off the wall and turned back to face him.
The ghoul laughed and pointed at him mockingly, "Fucking dumbass! You think that's going to work?"
In the middle of his laughter, Jacket, in one swift move, bashed the pipe on top of the ghoul's head and stopped his laughing. He backed up, holding his head in pain as blood began flow from his scalp. The ghoul looked at the human surprised, shocked that a person like him was able to injure him. Jacket took a deep breath, the smell of blood started to invigorate him.
"H-How the fuck-" the ghoul's sentence was cut short as Jacket continued to swing the pipe at his face, breaking his nose and shattering his teeth.
The ghoul tried to thrash him with his tentacle, but Jacket slipped under it and smashed the ghoul's kneecap, sending him to the ground. His tentacles disappeared and he started to slowly crawl away, leaving a trail of blood. Jacket caught up to him, pipe in hand.
The ghoul turned on his back and struggled to hold himself up with his arms. "Please… Don't do this," the ghoul begged, his tears mixed in with the blood coming from his head and mouth.
That face, that expression, that plead for mercy, it reminded him too much of that movie producer from the night he saved that girl. He dropped the pipe and stood there silently; the ghoul took the opportunity to crawl away. Jacket quickly turned him over and sat on top of him; he grabbed his head and slowly moved his thumbs towards his eyes. The ghoul the began to scream loudly but suddenly stopped as he saw the human's head was being engulfed by purple tentacles. They completely covered Jacket's head, it sprouted white feathers, a yellow beak surrounded by wattles, and a big red comb that lined from his beak to the top of his head. His eyes slowly glowed bright yellow and he stared back at the wounded ghoul.
"M-Mon… Mons…" the ghoul softly stuttered as the beast began to slowly move his thumbs closer to his eyes.
"MONSTER!"
