Chapter 2
.
Gary Fredo was on a plane to Sanctuary Virginia late morning on the 1st of July. The FBI was paying his expenses and resumed his salary for the duration of the investigation. He wasn't entirely sure why they were taking such an interest in one murder. Perhaps they feared the press would learn about the possible involvement of satanism and wanted to say they had one of their best people on it. Gary took his time on the plane to study Sanctuary and it's history. It started as an english colony in the late 1610s, just over 400 years ago. The original plan had been for europeans who might have faced persecution in Europe to be able to start a new life, and live peacefully alongside the indigineous native americans. This ideal did not always work out in practice. The area was often at the mercy of local pirates. According to local legend 13 young women made a deal with these pirates. In exchange for the pirates showing mercy to the colony these girls gave the pirates sexual favors. When the towspeople learned of this arrangement they became enraged. A pastor convinced them to crucify these girls, literally. A few weeks later the pirates returned, and slaughtered most of the twon in vengeance. Suprisingly, 13 women were crucified, but only 12 bodies were discovered in their burial pit. Some believe that one of the girls was rescued by her pirate lover, some think one of them was a witch who enacted bengeance in the form of the pirates. At any rate, the area had since become a local tourist attraction, as had the mansion. This "Mansion" was originally just a farmhouse, built in the earliest days. But it was later bought by the wealthy, and for 400 years they expanded and built more and more of it. It was part of the history of the town, had seen much. Even president Brady owned it before he was killed last year. Currently it was owned by the Larabee family, the wealthiest family in town. Sanctuary had seen much in it's time, fighting during the revolution and civil war. In the 1930s and 40s there was a failry large influx of immigration from Germany and Russia, mainly refugees fleeing from the nazies and communists. Fredo wasn't sure how the towspeople originally felt about these immigrants, but now many of the people in Sanctuary were descended from these refugees.
.
The climate of this town was beautiful, the forrest rivaled the pacifif northwest in these terms, and there was a beach here. There was a joke that God created a beautiful land, but evened it out by populating it with evil people. Aside from the town's history of having pirates, slave-owners, and assorted politicians, Sanctuary was near a prison, many of the inmates settled here after their release. Despite this, there hadn't been a premediatated homicide in more than five years. Although the town had six registered sex-offenders, all six had solid alibies for the night of the murder. Clearly sheriff Duncan and mayor Bowen were doing something right.
Gary tried looking into what was known about the victim, Angel Flint. Angel was born in May 2002 to Carmen Flint. Carmen was 19 at the time. She neve married, but also had a younger Daughter named Abby. Whoever Angel's father was, he would likely come here for the funeral. Angel graduated from highschool the previous year, and immediately won the town's annual 4th of July beauty pagent. Shortly afte this Angel was given a job with the local tv station, essentially reporting on certain trends regarding fashion and movies. As a teenager she was able to give a perspective on these things that older people didn't understand. For better or worse Angel was also eye candy to viewers. Perhaps it was an obsessed fan, but why the pentagram?
.
Gary had questioned Jane York years ago, of that cult, she seemed the most genuinly sorry for her actions, she confessed willingly. Gary's impression of her at the time was she was just a stupid kid who got manipulated by an older predator, He'd seen enough monotheistic pastors manipulate impressionable girls like that, the satanism angle was just a new twist. Jane's older sister had been molested by her priest and committed suicide as a result. When the local church refused to hold a memorial for her, based on her suicide, Jane was ripe for manipulation into satanism. Still, she seemed to have turned her life around. But it seemed an unusual coincidence that she just happenned to live in a small town where another satanic murder occured. Gary decided to talk to the local doctor, David Hayward, who would probably be completing the autopsy by now. Humans could lie or remember events incorrectly, but science didn't lie. He wanted to let the autopsy speak for itself before questioning any witnesses, go into this investigation with a clear perspective.
