So my life is a bit hectic right now so I'm not sure if weekly updates are possible, but since it's been one week since I posted this story and I had this chapter finished, I thought I'd post it. I hope you enjoy.
Lothraxion was sitting in his quarters, meditating. Harry Potter slept close by. Lothraxion didn't need to sleep, being a Nathrezim, but meditating often passed the time when he wasn't working for the Army. As he meditated, he mused on the five years that have passed since he found Harry. Lothraxion wouldn't trade those five years for anything, though they weren't always easy. Lothraxion could still remember what it was like the first few days after finding Harry.
*Flashback begins*
"Is there any way that you can get him to be quiet?" Crotonar asked gruffly. Lothraxion shook his head as he tried to sooth Harry. The boy had been crying, and nothing they had done was working. He didn't want to be fed, no soothing techniques worked, and having just woke up, he probably wasn't tired. Lothraxion suspected it was probably the stress of everything that had happened to him over the last few days: Losing his parents, being abandoned by a horrible uncle, and finding himself in a new place with strange creatures. All of this was bound to be stressful for a young child that couldn't articulate how he felt quite yet. Gyron seemed to know this as well.
"Crotonar, he's stressed out. Let him cry it out, it's probably the best way to handle this right now." She attempted to sooth the short tempered warrior. The aldrachi simply growled.
"I get that, but it's so annoying and concerning. Isn't there anything we can do?" Lothraxion ignored the two and focused on soothing Harry.
"Mama, Dada." He whimpered out. Lothraxion's heart tore at this.
"I'm sorry Harry, I'm all you've got."
*Flashback ends*
Harry eventually got used to how things were, and things settled into a routine. Curious about Harry's homeworld and origins, Lothraxion had gone back to Earth to do some investigating, and what he had found out had only increased his feeling that Harry had no one on that world. The fact that he was held up as this great hero that had somehow vanquished a Dark Lord named Voldemort, though Lothraxion suspected it had more to do with the protection magic that had protected Harry from the soul fragment, angered him more when he realized that they had just left him with unsuitable guardians. Gyron was enraged and even Crotonar hadn't taken the news well.
"THIS is how they treat a great hero? So help me if I find them." He had snarled out. Crotonar may not be found around children all that much, but put one in danger and he would be the first to defend them. Lothraxion would normally laugh at his friend's antics, but in this case he did not laugh. Still, all that was behind them and Harry was growing up happy.
The six year old child was bright and inquisitive, always asking questions about the world around him. Thankfully, Lothraxion had taught him manners so Harry was always polite and usually didn't interrupt soldiers while they were working. That being said, they were still willing to answer if they weren't working on something very important. Gyron delighted in telling Harry about the inner workings of the Army, Lothraxion taught Harry about various subjects like history, literature, and mathematics, though within reason for the fact that he was six, even Crotonar was won over by Harry's happy and innocent questions and told him about some of his exploits. Lothraxion tended to think these days that the gruff attitude he showed Harry was an act to amuse the young child and that he actually cared deep down.
Xe'ra herself was taken with Harry as well, allowing him to observe the workings of the Army from the bridge if he behaved, which he always did. She taught Harry about the various worlds in the cosmos the Army protected. She had taken to making sure one of the three was always on hand to watch Harry should the situation require it; Lothraxion still had to go out and lead the Army and Gyron and Crotonar were leaders as well, but rarely did a mission require all three of them at once.
Harry had developed a desire to join them and focused hard on learning so he could one day join the Army. Lothraxion encouraged but also tempered this desire. It was good for Harry to have ambitions, but he wanted his son to explore other options as well and not let this one ambition take over him. He had seen such things before, and refused to let it happen to Harry.
Lothraxion would have mused more, but at that point he sensed that Harry was waking up. Breaking from his meditation and standing up, he cleaned a few things up as Harry fully woke up. Harry turned to Lothraxion and smiled.
"Good morning Dad." He exclaimed.
"Good morning Harry. Did you sleep okay?" Lothraxion replied.
"Yes I did. What are we going to do today?" Lothraxion thought about it for a moment, then decided on something.
"Well, I've been thinking, I think today it's time to start your formal magical training." Lothraxion had been thinking on this for some time and decided Harry was ready for some instruction on magic. Harry's magic was powerful, but had only manifested so far as accidental magic. It was common for young individuals with magic to display accidental magic, but Harry's was of a powerful kind. Lothraxion and Gyron still laughed at the time that Harry got impatient with Crotonar and turned him rainbow colored. Crotonar himself swore the other two to secrecy, so it was an inside joke among the four of them.
"Really?" He asked with joy in his voice. Lothraxion just chuckled.
"Really. But let's have some breakfast first, okay."
"Okay." Said Harry happily. He got dressed and Lothraxion led Harry over to the mess hall. Once there they met up with Gyron and Crotonar and the four of them ate their breakfast while making conversation.
"Harry and I are starting his training today. You two care to join us?" Lothraxion asked.
"I can't. I'm overseeing the training of some of our new recruits and I asked Crotonar here to help out." Gyron explained. Crotonar nodded in response. Harry looked a little downcast, but Lothraxion soon cheered him up.
"Don't be sad Harry. You can show them what I taught you later." Harry smiled at the thought and nodded to what Lothraxion said. Soon after, they finished their breakfast and traveled down to the training rooms. Gyron and Crotonar went into one of the larger ones and Harry and Lothraxion went inside a smaller one close by. It was just the two of them and some training dummies. Lothraxion faced Harry.
"Now Harry," He began. "The first thing we need to do is connect your inner magic to the magic that surrounds us. That way, you can draw on both sources for your spells." Harry nodded at the explanation and waited for the next part. "Now, to begin, close your eyes and clear your mind." Harry did so and soon had a look of intense concentration on his face. "Now reach inward with your mind. Look for the magic within you." Lothraxion instructed. Harry's face scrunched up as he began to feel for the magic inside him. He felt within himself, looking for it. After a while, he opened his eyes and said.
"I can't find anything."
"You will, Harry. Just keep looking." Lothraxion prompted gently. Harry sighed and closed his eyes again. He continued to reach inward, and after some continued searching, he found something. He felt a spark of warmth and coldness within him at the same time. It seemed to come from the same source. He followed it and the sensations got bigger.
"I've found it." Harry announced. Lothraxion smiled.
"Good. Now reach out and connect with it. You'll know how." Harry imagined himself reaching out and touching a sphere of magic, and as if on cue he felt a rush of energy as he connected with the magic within him. Lothraxion sensed that Harry had accomplished this. "Alright Harry, now reach out with it and connect the magic within you to the magic that surrounds us."
Harry imagined the magic flowing through his body to his hands. The magic followed his lead, and soon pooled into his hands. Harry then willed the magic to connect to the outside magic he could now sense. The connection was sharp and Harry felt the magic demanding to be let out. He let it, and a sphere of pure magical energy came out of his hands and towards one of the dummies he was facing. It collided with the dummy with a resounding crash. Harry opened his eyes to see the dummy destroyed. He gasped.
"I did that?" He asked in wonder.
"You did." Lothraxion replied proudly. "Now, if you're ready, I'll teach you some more." Harry nodded eagerly and Lothraxion began to instruct Harry on how to shape the magic into an element, in this case an ice bolt, one of the first spells a prospective mage learned. Harry payed close attention and after a while had mastered the ability. Lothraxion watched Harry practicing and decided to try something.
"Harry, I'm going to teach you how to access the Light. Are you ready?"
"Of course I am." Harry said excitedly. Lothraxion chuckled at his son's enthusiasm.
"Alright Harry, now listen closely. To access the Light, first reach within to your magic. Connect it to the outside magic." Harry did that within a minute. "Good. Now, focus on the Light. Focus on everything I've ever taught you about the Light. Then will your magic to reach out with to the Light and have faith that the connection will be made." Harry reached out with his magic and did as Lothraxion instructed. He focused hard on what he learned the Light was about: Order, creation, justice. He focused on his father's abilities and faith with the Light and his desire to emulate them and do good with it.
Harry kept at it until, finally, he felt a warm sensation enter his magic. It was different than the fiery magic he felt before. It was a warm, comforting feeling, one that soothed him. He focused that feeling through his magic and into his hands and let it out in a display of light magic that impressed Lothraxion as Harry smote a training dummy. Harry turned to his father and smiled.
"I did it." He said happily. Lothraxion smiled.
"Yes, you did." He said with pride in his voice. "Now, let's teach you how to focus that into a good smite." Harry practiced and by the time he had mastered the ability Crotonar and Gyron had come in to see how the training was going. Harry didn't notice and was practicing his spells, switching from arcane to light magic with an increasing ease. Finally, he finished, and it was clear he was getting tired.
"Well, seems that the training has gone over well, hasn't it boy." Crotonar said, his eyes betraying the sincere happiness he felt at Harry's accomplishments. Gyron was more open.
"You're doing a great job Harry. It's clear you're going to be a great mage. But try not to overdo it." She praised and cautioned.
"And on that note, it's time for you to rest." Lothraxion said. Harry pouted at this.
"But I want to learn more." He pleaded. Lothraxion just took on a stern look.
"And you will. But right now, you need to rest. We don't want to exhaust your magic." Harry sighed and nodded. The four of them left and Lothraxion tucked Harry in for a nap once they arrived at his and Harry's quarters. Despite his efforts, Harry soon fell asleep and the three of them began to speak quietly about Gyron and Crotonar's efforts to train the recruits and Lothraxion's efforts to train Harry.
The next day found Harry moving through the ship with a draenai child his age. His name was T'paartos, and he was the son of two of the soldiers, male draenai named Nahoas and Karul. Harry and T'paartos had met each other when the family was transferred to the Xenedar and the boys had been fast friends ever since. Harry and T'paartos were headed towards one of the training rooms so that Harry can show T'paartos what he learned so far.
"It's really cool. Dad showed me how to control the arcane, and then he showed me how to summon the Light. I can't wait to show you." Harry explained excitedly to his friend.
"T'paartos cannot wait to see." T'paartos replied. His way of speaking was something that Harry and the others got used to long ago, and as far as they were concerned, it just made T'paartos unique. Harry simply smiled as they entered the training room. Harry immediately faced a dummy and asked T'paartos to back up a little.
"Dad was certain about one thing: Be safe." Harry explained as T'paartos backed up. Harry then showed off what he learned, conjuring ice and fire to hit the dummy, before summoning a smiting of light onto the dummy. After demonstrating this a few more times, Harry turned to T'paartos. "Well, what do you think?" He asked. T'paartos smiled.
"T'paartos is impressed. T'paartos wants to learn how to use the Light as well."
"Well, ask my dad and your parents. I'm sure they'll let you join me." Harry smiled at the thought of training with his best friend.
"T'paartos will. Can we spar now?" Harry's smile grew as he turned to a pair of warglaives and a wooden warhammer that fit their sizes. Technically they were made for races of their size that were adults, but the two of them had sneaked in the training room to spar with the weapons for some time now. Harry grabbed the warglaives and gave T'paartos the warhammer. The two of them began to spar, practicing with the weapons in the style they had seen the members of the Army of the Light use when they watched them train.
They did this for some time, losing themselves in their fun. They did not notice the door opening to let Crotonar in. He was about to announce his presence when he stopped. He watched the two of them spar instead. Their style was childish and sloppy, but hidden underneath was a warrior's potential. The trainer in Crotonar would not allow this to go untapped. He cleared his throat.
"What are you two doing in here?" He asked firmly, but not unkindly. The boys swirled around to face the aldrachi and stared at the older warrior. They couldn't speak, for they were afraid of how much trouble they could be in. Crotonar just chuckled. "You're not in trouble, yet. I'm just wondering why you two were in here. I expected the room to be empty." Finally Harry spoke.
"I wanted to show T'paartos my magic." He explained. Crotonar nodded.
"I see. And why were you sparring with training weapons?"
"T'paartos and Harry have been doing this for months now." T'paartos added. Harry nodded.
"We come in here to spar with the weapons after we watch the warriors train."
"You mean you sneak in here?" Crotonar asked. They nodded morosely. Crotonar then smiled.
"I should tell your parents about this. But the truth is I'm impressed you managed to hide all of this. And truthfully I think Xe'ra always knew. She keeps track of who's moving through the Xenedar." Harry and T'paartos' eyes widened at this. "In fact, I watched you spar for a few minutes. I think there is potential in your styles. I could train you, but I warn you, it won't be easy." Harry and T'paartos simply looked at each other in shock for a moment before answering at the same time.
"Yes!" Crotonar laughed.
"Alright then. Follow me." Crotonar turned and left, Harry and T'paartos following him. They made their way into another training room, one where they trained new recruits. They were practicing now and were not surprised to find one of the leaders of the Army enter followed by Harry and T'paartos holding weapons.
"In time, if you succeed, I'll have weapons made for you. For now, use the ones you were training with." Harry nodded and the two of them entered one of the dueling circles. "Now, boys." Crotonar began. "If you want to fight with weapons and not magic, the first thing you need to know is this: The weapons are a part of you. They flow in tune with your movements. Everything you do will affect them and your ability to fight. Treat the weapons as an extension of your body and they will never fail you, understand?"
"I do." Harry responded.
"T'paartos understands."
"Good. Now Harry take a stance like this." He took a fighting stance and they mimicked him. Crotonar showed Harry an upward slash and Harry did it in turn, not as graceful as Crotonar but promising nonetheless. Crotonar showed Harry a few more offensive and defensive moves before setting him on a still training dummy. Crotonar showed T'paartos a few moves as well before setting him on another dummy. They did this for some times before Lothraxion, Gyron, Nahoas, and Karul all entered the training room to find the boys with Crotonar.
"Crotonar, why is Harry training with warglaives?" Lothraxion asked with some concern in his voice.
"Yes, and why is T'paartos practicing with a warhammer." Nahoas asked. Crotonar turned away from the boys to face them.
"I caught Harry and T'paartos sparring in one of the small training rooms. Harry showed promise with the warglaives. I saw no harm in supporting his promising magical abilities with physical training. We all know that magic will not solve all his problems. And T'paartos showed promise with the warhammer. He might make a good paladin, if he can harness the Light." Crotonar explained. The others glanced at each other before the fathers approached their children.
"And Harry, are you sure you want to do this?"
"Yes Dad, I am. I want to learn." Harry responded before going back to hitting the dummy.
"And T'paartos, do you want this?" Karul asked gently.
"T'paartos wants to learn how to be a paladin. T'paartos wants to learn how to wield the Light." T'paartos responded enthusiastically. Harry nodded to T'paartos' words, saying.
"He told me he wanted to learn how to use the Light." The adults just looked at each other, holding a silent conversation before finally Lothraxion, Nahoas, and Karul nodded.
"Alright." Lothraxion said. "I'll come up with a schedule for Harry."
"And we'll come up with a schedule for T'paartos." Nahoas added. Crotonar just nodded and went back to instructing the two boys.
That night, or rather what was supposed to be night, given that they were floating in the void of space, Harry and Lothraxion were in their quarters, Lothraxion reading to Harry from a storybook bought from one of the many worlds the Army protected. It was essentially an alien version of the tortoise and the hare, teaching the same lesson about how slow and steady wins the race. Harry loved this story. After they finished, Lothraxion put the book away and tucked Harry in. He decided to ask Harry a question.
"Harry, are you sure you want to learn both magic and warglaive fighting? It's a lot to take on."
"I know, but you said I need to do what I enjoy, and I enjoyed the warglaives just like I enjoy magic." Harry explained. Lothraxion simply ruffled Harry's hair.
"You're right, I did say that. I just don't want you to get overwhelmed, you know?" Lothraxion responded. Harry nodded.
"I know that, but it's fun. I like learning new things. It's fun." Lothraxion laughed. He had encouraged this attitude in Harry.
"Also one more thing. No more sneaking around the Xenedar. Okay." Lothraxion added.
"Crotonar said that Xe'ra probably already knew and didn't say anything because she was okay with it. But alright." Lothraxion looked surprised at that, but only said.
"That does sound like something she would do. She likes to keep track of everyone on the ship, though thankfully not in our private quarters." He laughed and Harry laughed back. "Anyway, good night Harry."
"Good night Dad." Harry rolled over to go to sleep and Lothraxion began to think through the schedule, making sure that Harry would have time to just be a child. He would have to grow up some day, but not quite yet.
