CHAPTER 2
CHOPSTICKS
YEAR 6
(Since Rick's Disappearance)
Present Day
Busan Train Station, Korea…
Ji-yeong gave the stranger a puzzled look. The man looked familiar. He recalled six years ago when one of their recruiters from the U.S. was accidentally booted out the helicopter by a captive:
California, USA. Six years ago,…
Ji and Kim were waiting at a Californian airstrip when Woo-bin, in his helicopter, finally made it to drop off the latest recruits. Ji remembered Woo laughing about how someone named Anna, threw them off schedule by calling in an emergency pickup. The recruit labeled "B", was pretty much on his way to the other side. At first, Woo-bin was going to ignore Anna's pleas because she was supposed to get an "A" for the CRM. When he was told the person survived a major stab wound and a fiery explosion, he called it into the CRM's base.
They found his report interesting. So, Woo's superiors told him to pick up Anna, the captive and bring them in. When the B recruit reached Ji's plane sans Anna, he was unconscious. His almost white beard, youthful appearance, and the fact he lived through all that shit, made him memorable to Ji.
Back to Present Day
That same man now stood awake and alive before him.
Ji knew the man must have mistaken him for this Glenn person and he didn't know anyone that went by that name. Before he could correct him, the humming of the CRM's spot-drones was coming closer to the tunnel's opening. Ji grabbed the blue-eyed man's sleeve and pulled him down the manhole, while Kim-shin molded himself quickly against the curve of the tunnel wall and used his dark coat to camouflage his head and hands.
Ji and the stranger dropped down feet first into the darkness and landed on the dead bodies of the undead, cushioning their fall.
When Ji's body hit solid ground, he kept his grip on the other man's wrist and rolled them out of the way in case the drones investigated the hole. Putting a finger to his lips for silence, he watched. The whirling became louder and he crouched further back while the stranger adjusted the swords on his back.
Through the fading darkness, he could see them flying slowly past the manhole. Thankfully, the drones didn't catch that the cover had been removed and they didn't see Kim-Shin.
Ji waited until he couldn't hear their droning anymore before cautiously going up the ladder to peek.
Kim-shin's shadowy head appeared suddenly over the hole, "Quit hiding like a little bitch and get up here."
Pursing his lips at the incorrigible, yet handsome devil, Ji shook his head as he called down, "Ajusshi, they're gone. We can go now."
He scrambled out of the hole. When his savior settled next to him, Ji held out his hand, "Mianhamnida (I'm sorry) I am not your Glenn. My name is Ri Ji-yeong."
Kim-shin followed with a quirk of his brow and a slight bow, "And, I am Kim-Shin. Thank you for your help."
The stranger took the proffered hands and gave them a bow in return.
The man pulled down his hood to reveal his long, dark curly hair, grey at his temples and the familiar full beard that was almost white, "I'm Rick Grimes. You might not be my friend, Glenn, but it sure is good to see a familiar face," giving Ji a toothy grin.
Remembering how utterly destroyed this man was when he was brought to Korea and how strong and fit he looked now, Ji had the instinctive reflex to trust him. Ji gave another slight bow and in a mixture between Korean and his halting English, told him with a smile, "Ihae haess-eoyo (I got it). Ajusshi, we are hiding from the same enemy. I remember you when you first come to our country. Our plan is to leave and get to the U.S. I know that's where you're from. I'd be happy if you joined us. We could use another."
He turned toward Kim-Shin for confirmation, After his friend gave the go-ahead, Ji continued, "We'll talk more, but right now, we need to get from out of the open before they come by on another sweep. If you want, we have a place to hold up."
Rick eyed him closely for a bit before deciding. He then tilted his head, "Okay, I'll go with you. I'm not fluent in Korean but I understand what 'ajusshi' means. And, I thank you for the title of respect. However, I feel old enough already, so can you just call me Rick?"
Ji understood that Westerners weren't used to Korea's honorific system, so he had no problem adhering to Rick's request. He held his thumb up and gave him a cheesy grin, "No problem… Rick."
Kim-shin rolled his eyes, "Whipped already."
Ji's savior who wore black, carried two swords and had bright blue eyes, bowed slightly with a smile, "Thank you, Ji-yeong shi (a sign of respect for younger males).
Kim-shin thought to himself, 'Smart man.'
That made Ji grin even wider. Even though Rick didn't want the title of 'ajusshi', he respected Ji-yeong enough to adhere to his culture on his behalf. 'I think we're going to be good friends,' he thought to himself as they led the way back to where Woo-bin and Yua stayed safe.
Ri Ji-yeong unlocked the metal door for Rick to walk past and go inside. Kim-shin bringing up the rear. When he entered, he saw it was a sizable storage room. The walls on either side were filled with supplies and in the back was another door.
In the middle of the room was a medium-sized square table and he noted there was a portable butane stove sitting on top. He saw that Glenn… he meant Ji, kept his place clean and neat. Something he wasn't used to seeing from someone on the run. He was about to step further in the room until Ji's hand touched him lightly on his forearm to stop.
Rick looked down at the shorter man to find him taking off his boots and setting them neatly next to two other pairs. Understanding without Ji-yeong having to say anything further, Rick unlatched his sword harness and pulled off his coat. Hanging it on one of the hooks by the door, then he pulled off his own combat boots and set them next to the others.
He did, however, hold on to one of his swords and moved further into the room. A habit he won't ever break.
When Ji gestured for Rick to sit on one of the cushions by the table, he set his sword next to him and that brought up the memory of another sword. The one with a white handle resting next to the person he's longed to see for over six years. He wondered how she was doing. Did she forget about him? Did she move on? He became lost in thought, remembering her smile, then he remembered the terror on her face when he was on that bridge.
Feeling his emotions starting to get overwhelmed, he shook himself to let those hurtful memories go. 'Can't think about that now. Just got to get yourself home, Rick.'
While Ji hung up his coat, Kim-shin went over to the other door and knocked first before sticking his head in through the slight opening. Rick heard him ask a question. Though he couldn't make out the words, he heard another voice respond. Ji went and sat opposite Rick while Kim opened the door wider gesturing for someone to come on out.
He didn't know what to expect but he was surprised when another Asian male in his mid-thirties dressed wearing a dark, loose cardigan and a young boy, probably around 12 or 13 years old came out. The pre-teen wore a large, blue t-shirt and jeans, his skin-tone tawny brown with his hair twisted into coils and pulled into a ponytail near the top back of his head. When they walked in, the teen gave Rick a short bow before narrowing his eyes at him.
'I don't blame him for being cautious,' Rick said to himself.
The man who came into the room with Kim introduced himself as Woo-bin, pilot and aeronautical engineer. He gave Rick a bow before turning to Kim-shin with hardly any emotion on his stoic face, "I guess you guys were safe since you made it back."
Kim-shin, just as formal and stiff, shrugged, "I would have called you."
Woo-bin raised an eyebrow, "How could you call? We don't have phones."
Kim deadpanned, "I know, that's why I said it."
Woo-bin blew out a heated breath, "Fuck you."
Kim laughed, "Rude."
Ji burst out laughing as Rick thought he was getting ready to witness the two men start a brawl. Glenn's twin jumped up and placed himself between the two, "Alright guys, Rick is going to think you don't like each other." He turned to Rick, chuckling, "They may look like they hate each other's guts but we're family. Kim-shin is the charismatic goblin and Woo-bin is the charming reaper of our group. You'll get used to their ways."
Ignoring the adults bickering, the teen took Ji's position across the table and kept his narrowed gaze on Rick.
Ji asked him, "Feeling better Yua?"
The boy only nodded his head.
There was something familiar with the boy's expression, but Rick couldn't quite place where it came from. Ji left the other two men still standing and staring at each other to sit next to the teen, "Rick Grimes, this is Yua. Yua, Rick Grimes. He saved us from getting ambushed by the Yaghan."
Reaching across the table, Rick held out his hand while giving him a return nod of his head.
Yua shook the hand proffered and finally took his eyes off Rick to look at his sword then he turned his head around to peep Rick's other blade by the door. The coffee color of his eyes lit up, "You carry two swords?" His voice cracked, telling Rick he was on the cusp of going through puberty. It reminded him of his son Carl and when he grew from a small little boy to almost taller than himself before he died from a walker bite.
The skin around Rick's eyes crinkled as he smiled and nodded, then began to water as they took on a faraway look.
Ji witnessed the gamut of emotions flitting across Rick's face as he stared at the boy. From the smile then sadness he saw there, he knew Rick was remembering someone fondly from his past.
Kim-shin and Woo-bin were laughing at each other as they sat on either end of the table. Rick wanted to straight out start asking questions about who his hosts were, namely Ji-yeong but he needed to be patient because of the questions as to who he was and how he got there were coming.
Six years ago, …
When Rick first woke up from the bridge explosion, he didn't remember anything about how he got there, only a faint memory of Jadis/Anna looking down into his face, then to find himself confined inside a large medical facility.
After he recovered from his wounds, he was taken to a lab and the doctors there took different samples from all over his body. They even cut off a piece of Michonne's loc he kept wrapped around his wrist.
He's had it ever since Michonne was kidnapped by the Saviors all those years ago.
Once they were done with him, he was given several tests to determine what were his areas of expertise. His first inclination was to try and join enforcement, except he didn't want to be put into the position of either hurting or capturing someone. From what he'd already seen, the guards were pretty ruthless and reminded him of the Saviors, except these guys were more organized.
Right before he married and became a father, he was attending college for engineering. He had to drop out and quickly get a job as Sheriff's Deputy because you do what you gotta do when you knock up your girlfriend at a young age.
Though he was a police officer for most of his life, he didn't forget what he learned. What he remembered helped him build that damn bridge.
As far as he knew, the CRM had no information about him. Jadis was gone, so she couldn't tell them. If he used his engineering education to get into construction, he would have access to blueprints and schematics of the buildings, and the surrounding area. Information he would need in order to escape.
He prayed the testing would place him where he wanted to be.
The following week, they placed him out on the construction site to work.
At first, his only desire was to ink out a plan and make his way back to Michonne, Judith and the rest of his family. Depending on where he was being held, he didn't think it would take long to get home.
A month or two at the most. That is if he found transportation. After a few months in captivity, he learned how vast and tightly guarded the CRM compound was. It took him a couple of weeks to figure out that he wasn't even in his own country. Several of the captives surrounding him were American as were some of the guards whenever he was able to see their faces or hear their voices, so he thought he was at least somewhere in the United States.
Only until he overheard two of the guards talking about how things were different living there in Korea, did Rick realize he'd been transported West across the entire United States and over the Pacific Ocean.
He had no friends, everyone he met was too busy worrying about themselves and none of them formed a sense of family the way he did back home.
Even though he had access to the compound's layout, he was disappointed he wasn't able to explore. He was restricted to only transporting to where he was put to work and then back to his barracks. He was familiar with prisons, but this was nothing like he'd ever experienced in his life. Guards were everywhere. They formed no personal relationships, whether sexual or platonic. They were like robots. Rick was thankful that he's kept Michonne's wisdom close to his heart:
Anger makes you stupid…
Stupid gets you killed…
If it wasn't for her, he probably would have tried to escape the first week without a decent plan and killed in the process. Luckily, he took his time, memorized the layout, the CRM practices and kept the information to himself. He missed his family every day, but he didn't realize his strategy to stay cautious and meticulously plan took him five whole years to execute.
Back to Present Day
Ri Ji-yeong interrupted Rick's musing, "When I saw you the first time you were first brought here six years ago, I didn't think you'd make it. My apologies."
Rick shook his head, "No apologies needed. I didn't think I'd survive. It's a surprise to us both. I have so many questions to ask but since you're the host, I'll let you ask first."
Ji went on to recount when he first saw the half-dead Rick show up on the gurney. And how they were already in the planning stage of escaping to the United States, in hopes of finding refuge and possibly finding his family who immigrated several years before the world ended.
While he spoke, Yua got up, rummaged through cupboards and brought back to the table, five plastic packages of Ramen. Woo Bin set a metal pot on the burner to boil water as Ji and Kim told Rick about their jobs and how they fooled the CRM they were dead.
Rick couldn't help staring at Ji-yeong, he was an exact copy of Glenn Rhee and it hurt his heart every time he looked at him.
Rick then asked, "You said you had family in the States. Whereabouts were they livin'?"
Busy moving things around on the table, Ji told him, "My parents had divorced not long after we were born. Because my father came from the working-class and my mother was from a chaebol family, her parents decided that my father and my brother, being younger, needed to leave the country. They settled in Atlanta and from what I heard my dad owned a pizza shop."
Rick's eyes lit up, "Your brother… was he your twin brother?"
It clicked, "Yes! Because we were twins, my grandparents made my mom and dad split because only one of us could inherit the business. I am older by seven minutes. What was full the name of your friend you said looks just like me?"
Overcome with emotion, Rick's voice wavered, "His name was Glenn Rhee. He delivered pizzas in Atlanta."
Ji-yeong placed his hands gently on the table while everyone listened, "My family name is 'Ri', spelled with an R and an I. My full name is Ri Ji-yeong and my brother's name is Ri Jae-yeong." He lifted his head and stared at the ceiling, "You said he looks just like me. My father probably Americanized his name from Jae to Glenn and he delivered pizza…" a tear drifted down his cheek, "you said he died? What about his relatives?"
Rick felt elated and deflated at the same time, "From what Glenn told me when I met him, no one else in his family survived. He was the only one left. I'm so sorry."
Ji-yeong's hand flew to his mouth as he sobbed, "Your Glenn is my twin and now I have no one left."
Rick reached across the table and patted Ji's hand, "Glenn was a good man and my brother. You do have someone left. Someone very special." Rick took a deep breath, "Before I was taken, Glenn married a woman named Maggie and they had a baby boy. Glenn passed before he was born. His name is Hershel Jr. Named after Maggie's father. He should be about seven or eight now. Ji-yeong shi, you have a family and they were living in a place not far from mine."
Ji cheered up when he received a pat on the shoulder by Woo-bin. He straightened his back, "Then that's where we are gonna go. I'll find my family when we find yours."
That made Rick think about Michonne and Judith and how they were faring, then again, Yua's demeanor kept pulling his attention. What was it about this young man?
When the water began to boil, Yua poured and served each their own bowl. Ji handed everyone a pair of chopsticks and they began to dig in.
Except for Rick.
He held them awkwardly in his hand and tried to mimic the movements of the others, but it just wasn't working for him, "I… uh… I've never used these before," he sighed, slightly embarrassed. "They gave us spoons and forks in lockup, so I never learned."
It was Yua, who took on the mantle of teacher. "The first thing you do," he placed the first stick in the between Rick's thumb and first finger, "hold the upper chopstick like a pencil. Then put the second chopstick in the crease of your thumb. Like this," he demonstrated by helping Rick hold the other stick in the correct position, "Now you use the base of your thumb, your ring, and middle finger to hold it still, while you use the tip of your pointer finger and the tip of your thumb to move the upper chopstick."
He let go of Rick's hand to show him by demonstrating. The other guys had already begun to dig in, slurping their noodles into their mouths and grinning. Rick adjusted the sticks in hand and after dropping them a couple of times, he was able to keep a grip and clamp the ends on some of the slippery noodles.
After a few more tries of picking up his food, he was able to bring them to his mouth. Only this time, the two sticks crossed each other, sending a few noodles to fly and land on Woo-bin. Causing Kim-shin to burst out laughing.
Woo-bin gave a tight smile when he plucked a lone noodle out of his black, curly hair. With a quick lift of his chin, he asked, "Kim-shin, what's that behind you?"
Busy laughing, Kim-shin sitting cross-legged and his hands resting on his knees, turned his head, "What?" He didn't notice Woo throwing the long strand of ramen across the table to land on the back of his head.
When Kim turned back with a look of confusion, Woo-bin shrugged, "Nothing. I thought I saw something."
Rick, Ji-yeong, and Yua burst out laughing.
Rick started to get the hang of using his chopsticks and found that it was better to hold the bowl closer to his mouth and scoop the noodles in.
Yua, proud of his student, elbowed Ji-yeong next to him, "Watch pretty soon, we'll see him practicing in his sleep."
The sound and intonation of how the pre-teen said those words shocked Rick into dropping the bowl and his sticks. Narrowing his eyes at Yua, he stared intently.
Yua, not sure why the man was looking at him in such a weird way, dropped his shoulders and shied away from the scrutiny, "What? Why are you lookin' at me like your gonna eat me or somethin'?"
Rick's mouth dropped open. He thought back to what Ji said about how he met Yua, "When exactly did you meet Yua, Ji-yeong shi?"
Ji put down his utensils and scratched his head. "He was first brought on my plane when the world first ended. Kim-shin and Woo-bin were the ones that picked him up."
Rick nodded then turned to Kim-shin, who still didn't realize there were noodles on his head, "Where did you find him?"
Yua watched them curiously. Rick's gaze kept going back to him.
"We were new to the area on one of our first patrols in picking up survivors. We found him wandering alone in a place called Georgia in the U.S. Outside of Atlanta to be exact." When Kim turned to Yua, he caught sight of something swinging in his peripheral. Lifting his hand, he grabbed the food, looked at it, then threw it at Woo-bin. "Asshole."
Rick's steely, blue gaze concentrated on Yua again, "You said you don't remember who your parents are? Or what your name is? And, that you were found with one shoe?" His voice had gone quiet and there was a stiffness to the room as everyone's attention was on the man with the country accent.
Rick asked Kim-shin, "Did you fly your helicopter over the city the day you picked him up?"
Kim cocked his head to think, "I think we did. The city was full of Yaghan and we wanted to avoid them. We had our orders to search the areas outside Atlanta. I remember flying overhead and then we saw some burned out camps below. I dropped down for a closer look and that's when Woo-bin spotted Yua walking out of a crop of trees. There was no one else around, so we picked him up and head back West to return to Korea."
Rick began chewing his bottom lip, thinking. "I woke up from a coma nearly a month or two into the apocalypse and I was in Atlanta looking for my family. I thought I was hallucinating when I saw a helicopter fly overhead. Now I know I wasn't crazy."
They all watched as he seemed to be putting pieces of a puzzle together. Rick raised his eyebrows and looked at Yua again and that's when he noticed it.
"What's that on your arm?"
Yua raised his arm and fingered the loc of hair he had tied around his wrist, "This? It's something that's been with me ever since I was captured by the CRM. I don't remember who it belongs to. I don't go anywhere without it."
Rick raised his own arm and pulled back his sleeve. Tied around his own wrist was another loc of brown hair. This one with strands of blond going through it.
Everyone's eyes widened. Woo-bin cracked, "Well, that's not weird at all."
Rick asked, "Does the name, Michonne, mean anything to you?"
Ji, Kim and Woo leaned closer to listen intently as Yua's brows dropped in puzzlement, "Michonne?"
"What about Mike Anthony or Terry?" Rick continued, watching the boy carefully. When Yua spoke the words 'practicing in his sleep' with a low, soft voice, it immediately brought up a memory of Michonne practically saying those exact same words to him about Judith. It was the first day he realized that he loved her as his soulmate and had been in love with her but never knew it.
When Yua cracked the joke of Rick eating him, it was also a reminder of Michonne's sarcastic humor. Adding how he sounded similar to his wife and the timing and the place of his capture by the CRM, Rick's heart began to beat faster as he prayed his suspicions were about to be confirmed.
He began to describe his wife, "Slim, beautiful, dark skin woman with long twisted locs. Her eyes are brown and soft as a lamb. She could be fierce when she needed to be and gentle when it comes to the ones she loves. She loved the arts. From how she described her boyfriend at the time, Mike was tall, with a beard and a deep voice. His best friend, Terry was lighter in skin tone and he was always with Mike wherever they went."
Yua quickly stood up as memories began flooding in.
Rick watched him closely as he asked quietly, "Is your name, Andre Anthony?"
Yua collapsed to sit hard on the floor as tears pooled in his eyes. He looked up to Rick, who got up to help him, "Peanut," he sniffed, "she called me Peanut."
Alexandria, Virginia…
Michonne stood calmly outside the covered bridge. Tightening her grip on her sword's pommel as she waited for Daryl's signal. Her pulse began to beat faster with a mixture of fear and excitement for the battle about to commence.
The Whisperers took her and her family by surprise in the cemetery a few days before and killed Paul.
After tracking them for over two hours, those sick flunkies wouldn't get a second chance to do it again.
As soon as she heard the sound of a bird chirping, Michonne stepped out into the middle of the bridge's road. Right in front of her, the tunnel's wooden roof blocked the morning's early sunlight, giving the six walkers who trudged slowly her way, an eerie, smokey look.
Yumiko, Magda, and Daryl came strolling up behind them. Taking his time, he shot, one by one, each walker in the leg with his crossbow looking for regular humans amongst the walking corpses.
The first two he hit in the thigh kept walking. The next howled, grabbing his leg and fell to the ground, causing three 'real' walkers to turn from their path and attack the screaming food within their midst.
The other two gave themselves away by stopping in their tracks. The one closest to Michonne thought it would be a good idea to make a run for it by leaving his buddies behind. He reached into his sleeve and brandished a knife. Probably in hopes to scare the woman in front of him to get out of the way.
Magda and Yumiko took care of the real walkers while Daryl aimed an arrow at a Whisperer who quickly fell to their knees and raised their hands in surrender. He kept the bow on his target and watched to make sure Michonne was alright.
Daryl thought that whisperer's mask must have damaged his common sense. He didn't understand why the fool ran straight toward Michonne holding a big ass sword when he only had a what looked like a pocketknife to him.
And, just as Daryl predicted would happen, Michonne stepped to the side and slashed the man across his abdomen then pulled back to plunge the tip right through him, killing him instantly.
"Dumbass." Daryl's attention went back to the Whisperer on their knees. Michonne walked up as Daryl ripped the mask off a young girl's head.
He handed it to her as she strolled past.
Michonne looked at the skin of a human being's face with disgust. Without addressing the would-be-killer, she kept going, growling, "Bring her," as she snapped her wrist, knocking the blood off the blade of her sword.
Busan Train Station, Korea…
"Who's Michonne?" Kim-shin asked. He was sad, yet happy for his brothers finding out information about their families. If it's true, Ji-yeong had a nephew and Yua found out his true name and his mother might still be alive. He and Woo-bin had no hope of believing they had any family members left. They saw it with their own eyes.
Growing up then serving together, they made the decision to sneak out the barracks to find their families when the world ended. They traveled incognito to their small village to find everyone had already turned.
Their mothers and fathers had been best friends for decades and had lived next door to each other.
Kim and Woo found them all in Kim-shin's family residence. Though their parents had been very proud that their sons had grown strong, intelligent and served proudly for Korea's military, the apple of everyone's eye was Kim-seon, Kim-shin's adoptive four-year-old sister.
His parents may have been her legal guardians, but Woo-bin's parents fell in love with the little girl and shared in the responsibility of raising her.
The men quickly found their empty shells walking aimlessly among the ruins of their household. They had to search longer for their youngest family member. They finally found their sister hidden away in a locked closet. Probably placed there by the parents hoping to protect her from the Yaghan Jombi.
With a heavy heart and the feeling of wanting to give up, Kim-shin and Woo-bin mustered up the courage to continue living and their only recourse was to dispatch what used to be their parents and their little sister, then return to service which turned into working for the CRM.
Because they were already close friends, practically brothers, they never followed the CRM doctrine of looking out for one's self and just follow orders. They eventually pulled Ri Ji-yeong into their circle and then they came upon Yua.
Seeing the little tyke wandering alone with one shoe in the woods that day, brought back memories of their little sister and even though it was against their orders, they landed their helicopter and scooped him up and ever since, they had been Yua's, now Andre, guardian angels.
That's when they decided it was time to leave the organization, their country, and find their freedom. They had no one left to keep them there.
Rick was helping Andre off the floor when he answered Kim's question. "She's my wife and she's waiting for me to come home."
Yua was still shell-shocked to have remembered his identity and that his long-lost mother might still be alive.
Rick's answer sent another shockwave through the group.
Ji-yeong exclaimed, "Wait… you mean to tell me that somehow, you met Michonne during all of this, married her and now you found her long lost son? This cannot be real. This is a miracle."
Kim-shin answered sardonically, "Or convenient to the plot."
Woo-bin smacked Kim's shoulder, "Shh… his story is interesting."
Kim rubbed where he'd been hit, "Jeez, what's with people telling me to shush?"
Rick chuckled at their banter then settled next to a still dazed Andre. "Whatever this is, convenient plot… coincidence, I'm glad I found my best friend's brother. His twin no less. And, I found my wife's son."
A few hours later…
The group had finished their meal and tabled the discussion about their connection. There was no way to prove it through documentation and it was hard, emotionally for young Andre. He was still quiet from the earlier news.
Kim-shin, to distract everyone, brought out a CRM topography map of their surrounding area and the directions to where the plane and boat were docked, waiting. They also discussed when was the best time to make the trip overseas.
Rick traced a hand over an area to the East, "The CRM is keeping something of importance Northeast of here. I don't know what it is, but it was important enough for them to try and take me back to the lab in the HGPD department." He then pointed to where he used to work construction, "I had memorized the entire layout of the base, the guard's routines and where the executives kept their offices. I was able to sneak around and gather intel. Right before I made my escape, I listened in on some scientists talking about me. They called me Subject RG and that they were testing Subject RG-8 in Quadrant D," he put his finger on a place on the CRM's map that showed a small building.
Rick then went to where his coat and bag hung by the door and pulled out a large folded piece of paper. He came back to the table and spread it on top of the CRM one, "According to old records," he matched the locations of his old map to the current one, "Quadrant D used to be a place called Ulsan."
Rick reached up to scratch his beard as he contemplated, "It's taken me almost a year to acclimate surviving alone in Korea. With walkers everywhere and having to stay off CRM's radar, I never got a chance to find out what they're keeping there."
Kim-shin asked, "Do you have any ideas of what it could be?"
"No. But, whatever it is, it's somethin' to do with me. In fact, it's where I was heading when I ran into you guys in the tunnel. I know you've been plannin' this for a long time and I don't want to delay you, but I need to check this out." Rick stood straight and folded his arms, "If you tell me when you're leaving, I'll catch up."
Ji-yeong, Kim-shin and Woo-bin were quiet for a few minutes. It was Andre who broke the silence, "We just found you and you are the only tie to my mom. There's no way I'm letting you out of my sight." He got up off the floor and faced the men, "Ji, Hyung (address for an older male), your brother's family is alive, and you only know that because of him." He pointed to Rick.
"We might as well stick together and find out what the CRM has hidden in that building." He fingered the loc on his wrist, "I want to find out more about my mother and how she's been all this time." Andre straightened his shoulders, determined, "If you don't want to go, I can't make you but I'm sticking with Rick Abunim (formal way of saying father)."
Rick held up his hand, "Andre, I appreciate that, but just like I told Ji-yeong Shi, you don't have to call me Abunim," he placed his hand on the boy's shoulder, "I don't know what's there or how dangerous it'll be. You and your brothers have come all this way and I don't want my plans to mess that up."
Ji, who had been silently messaging Kim and Woo while they were talking, interjected, "Rick. Yua, I mean Andre is right. There's no way with the ties we've found that we're letting you go to this place by yourself." Kim and Woo nodded in agreement. "Our plan was to leave in two days and can delay going for a few more, if need be."
Kim-shin added, "CRM kept a lot of what they were doing top secret and even though we were high-ranked, we couldn't find out. We need to know that info. It may help us in the future on how to combat them."
Woo-bin, who Rick had found to be straight-forward spoke in his low voice, "Like it or not, Rick. We're all going with you."
Rick looked from Andre, to Ji-yeong, to Kim-shin and last, to Woo-bin, "Alright, let's go see what they're hiding."
