Chapter 2:
Although the pain by then was starting to show its full extent Kefla still pressed on, intent on making it home.
Too much time had been spent and there was no grant to waste anymore even for her own sake.
The reason for this line of thinking had been waiting for her at the house that she reached thankfully without further incident.
Stepping inside, Kefla closed the door and made her way to the living room. The light coming off from the TV told Kefla where to find the owner of the house.
Said person had fallen asleep in her chair, probably not too long after Kefla had set out.
"Good, means she didn't have to worry why I took so long," Kefla thought. She couldn't dare think what would have happened if the one in the chair had gone out of the house looking for her because Kefla knew that was literally something the other would do under those circumstances.
Fortunately for her this did not happen, though it was still going to be something when she woke up and saw Kefla.
Reaching out with her hand, Kefla gently shook the woman's arm to wake her up.
With a start the woman awoke, and instinctively looked around.
Seeing that it was Kefla made the woman relax although this was quickly thrown out of the way when she got a good look at Kefla.
"My god what happened out there sweetheart?!", the old woman quickly got her cane and with a struggling effort got out of the chair to check on Kefla.
Pointing to her cheek, Kefla mouthed the words, "hurts...too much." Her jaw had swollen up to the point where it was hard to speak.
Not needing to be asked, the old woman ushered Kefla into the kitchen where she opened the freezer on top of the fridge.
"Thank you," Kefla tried her best to keep speaking through the pain. Taking the tray from the other she tore a paper towel and wrapped two ice cubes into it.
As Kefla placed the makeshift ice pack to her cheek and took a seat next to the counter, the older woman came over and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Was it one of them again?", she asked Kefla.
Kefla shook her head and replied, "No grandma...different. Wearing different insignia." She couldn't say any more due to the pain in her jaw.
"I heard on the news this morning that some new group was arising in parts not to far from us," Kefla's grandmother nodded, "looks like they are already on the move Never thought they would do it so fast."
Remembering the bag she had in her hand, Kefla gave it to her grandmother.
"Darling," the elder woman expressed, "you surely didn't have to get this after going through that."
Squeezing Kefla's shoulder her grandmother continued, "I'm sorry, you don't deserve to go through that. Its all my fault."
Forcing herself to speak Kefla spoke with choked words, "Don't say that Grandma please."
Her grandmother shook her head, "it is. You could have been killed."
Feeling the ice cubes start to melt, Kefla dumped them into the sink and threw the paper towel into the trash.
She then brought her grandmother into a close embrace, "I just had a little bad luck this time and I promise it won't happen again. Nothing will keep me from helping the most important thing in my life."
Returning the embrace Kefla's embrace, her grandmother cursed the world for its harshness.
Kefla agreed and held onto the other for a good while before separating.
"Its getting late," her grandmother checked the clock on the wall, "I would make you dinner but I don't know if your up for it."
Shaking her head, Kefla told her grandmother that she would be fine for the night and not to worry about it.
The feeling of just wanting to go to bed came over Kefla and so she reassured her grandmother one more time before wishing the older woman a goodnight.
Making her way up the stairs, Kefla knew she needed to make a quick pit stop to the restroom for a good, long shower before heading to bed.
Before she got all the way up the stairs however, she abruptly turned and made a dash back down them.
Although she was sure she locked the front door to the house it didn't hurt to do at least one safe check.
The shower felt good and helped for a time to relieve her of some of the pain, making Kefla wish to keep it going longer. Though water bills prevented that.
So after getting out of the shower and drying herself off, Kefla got ready for bed.
"The swelling won't go away for a couple of days," she confirmed to herself. Since tonight was a school night that meant she would have to go to school with the dark bruise that was going to be fully developed by that time tomorrow.
Kefla knew there would be attention but that did not bother her in the slightest. All of it could be negative for all she could care; there was something that needed to be done and she went through and completed it.
Putting on her pajamas, Kefla remembered that she needed to make sure her grandmother had gotten to bed all right. The old woman was stubborn as all heck and was one to try and do things by herself despite the limitations she was faced with.
Her grandmother was fine and was just settling in to go to sleep when she saw Kefla.
"Are you going to be okay?", she asked Kefla, "its okay if you need a couple days."
Shaking her head, Kefla assured her grandmother that she would be fine and that there was no way she was going to miss school. Though not a big fan of it by any stretch of the word, Kefla understood how important it was.
Wishing her final good-nights, Kefla began the retreat to her own bedroom.
On the way she heard the sounds of sirens.
Though while in the hallway she could not see the vehicles, the type of sirens was good enough to identify that it was the police.
More than one by Kefla's guess, she heard them go by fast, racing down the street to whatever emergency they were needed for.
Kefla stood still in the hallway until they were gone before continuing onto her room.
Turning out the light, Kefla got into bed.
Though she did not plan it, her body was working on its own and soon she found herself in a fettle position; cradling herself for some type of comfort.
It was a position that she had grown instinctive in use of. She always thought of it as a way to shut off the world.
Kefla felt it all come at once, the irony of how even this safety mechanism could not do anything to block off said word.
Feeling no sense in holding it back now, Kefla let the tears come.
