Andrew's POV
'You will retrieve the boy, alive or dead, do you understand?", Hades asked. He wanted to run away in fear, screaming out loud, but he kept a calm face. Fear was an enemy. Fear meant weakness. Hades had been particularly rough that week, and he knew not to get on his bad side. The boy's kneeling figure seemed small in the vast room, he knew he was meant to feel that way.
He stood up, very slowly, very carefully, and with a hint of a smile, said, "Yes Father".
"You may be dismissed", and just like that, relief began flooding into him. As he walked back he missed the sad smile Hades gave his son.
I kept replaying this scene in my head. He boy was Nico, he had to be, who else would Hades trust with something so important. Nico hadn't known that I had been watching the entire time, and now, I was still in my hiding spot, trying to find a way out of this place. I wasn't a child of Hades. I'm just a moral, a muggle, whatever people wish to label me with.
"Boy! Come out", barked Hades. It didn't take long for me to figure out he was talking to me. Yay. I got to be killed by the lord of the underworld. Great. Fun. Couldn't wait. I bit back a curse as I went in front of his throne and bowed.
"Lord Hades", I said, kind of loud.
"Explain", he said quietly.
"Well", I felt regret wash over me. The truth was that this was all a dare. A stupid dare. But I doubted that he would accept that. "I was forced to", which wasn't a complete lie. "My friend forced me to do this. I'm sorry", I said, hoping that I sounded like I meant it. I hid my trembling hands behind my back and tried to keep a straight face. Now I understood why Nico had been like that.
He made this sort of evil smile. "Well then, boy. Perhaps you would like to accompany my son on his mission to retrieve Harry Potter?". No. No I didn't. I wanted to wake up in my warm and comfortable bed and this to all be a dream. I didn't want to die. Not today. Not anytime soon.
"Sir, I", I paused. How was I supposed to say no? As crazy as it was, I was talking to a Greek God, someone you didn't mess around with. "Yep. Totally. Can't wait to die. Sign me up". I didn't realize what I'd said until after I said it, and I didn't miss the glare he gave me. "You're serious?", I asked. I didn't have any powers to protect me. Not even a wand. He grunted, which I took as a yes. "Fine. I'll go. Don't expect me to enjoy it".
"Get out of my presence". Wow. Someone was having a bad day. I left silently. It was only after I'd left that I noticed the long stick sticking out of my pocket. A wand. Sweet.
Andrew's POV
"No way. You're not coming. Go away. You're just a mortal", Nico said. I wish I could've agreed with him.
"Yeah, I wish I could. I never signed up for a death mission. Your very kind dad forced me to. Like, I mean, I agree with literally everything you said. Like. Everything". Nico looked at me as if I were a very small annoying child. "Don't look at me like that".
"Don't tell me what to do. You could've said no. Why didn't you. He just does that to intimidate people. He was probably really surprised when you said yes". For a moment I allowed myself to be optimistic. "Yeah, no going back. You. Do everything I say if you don't want to be killed, uh, what's your name?". He was like the smaller, only slightly less intimidating version of Hades. Complete with the death stare and all.
I was starting to dislike this guy. "Andrew. You can call me Andy. You can also be quiet. I'm not going to die. I have a wand. I probably know more about Hogwarts than you do", I snapped. None of this except the wand one seemed true.
"Great", he said. "I'm stuck with you for the next… month, probably? Maybe a year".
"I'm not any happier about this than you", I said quietly. "I'm going to pack".
He smiled. "Andrew, we're going on a quest. There's no time to pack. I have robes for both of us and a wand. I'm guessing that you have one too.". Why did he seem so sure of things when I was so clueless. Unfair.
"Shut up. And don't call me Andrew. I said it's Andy".
"Great, Andrew", he looked at me. "Are you coming?".
I bit back a curse. "Fine. How".
Andrew's POV
Okay. I gotta admit it. I was excited to be traveling with a demigod to go to Hogwarts. I
mean, why couldn't I be. I was going to have to thank my friends for that dare.
We got to Hogwarts faster than I expected. School was supposed to start today. Yesterday we'd been traveling the whole day. A horse dude named Chiron had insisted we took a plane instead of something called shadow moving, or traveling. I couldn't remember. I'm ADHD, it isn't like you can expect me to remember details.
"We're here", came a voice behind me. Nico was actually smiling as he casually walked through the solid wall and… disappeared. Was that a Hades thing? How was I going to find him?
I saw half of him come out of the wall. People, I'm not a demigod. I can't handle these feats of magic. "What are you waiting for?". I walked through it. It didn't feel special. I didn't break all my bones. I could barely overcome my shock before I saw the loud train coming in, replacing my sense of shock with even bigger shock. I couldn't help it. I grinned as I walked onto the train right behind Nico.
Have you ever noticed that Hades has this… aura, that makes people want to get away from his as fast as possible? Yup. Guess what? His kids have it too. Fun. Nico just walked into an empty apartment, even though all the others were full. He glared at me as I went in to sit on the opposite seat. I tried my best to glare back. When other kids tried to get in he just looked at them, not even glared, and they were gone. I tried my best to join. A few of them laughed at me.
"How old are you", a voice asked. Nico. Dang, I still couldn't get used to it. Weird question.
"Uh, fifteen. You?", awkward question, awkward answer.
He ignored me. "I should've let someone in". Why did this guy get chosen on this quest. Why not someone more… greek hero-ish?
"What's the point of this quest". As surprised as I was, I still didn't know this.
He looked out the window. "To kill Harry Potter". Very depressing guy. I wanted to forget that.
"Look, I'm going to leave. Try to make friends. We're going on in the fifth year, right?", I didn't wait for an answer. I left the compartment and opened the one right across. "Mind if I sit here?". I just wanted to get away from that depressed kid.
"Ah, yeah. Harry, someone's here", came a girl's voice that sounded too much like someone in a documentary. She had slightly bushy brown hair that was combed back and her robes already on. The kid, Harry, looked at me, with something in his eyes, but I couldn't figure out what. "I've never seen you at Hogwarts, what's your name?".
"Andrew Park. Call me Andy", I said quietly as I sat down. The three of them looked disturbed at my sight, as if I'd interrupted something important. Typical. "Uh what are your names?", I asked, as an attempt to make things less awkward, which, obviously, I'm really terrible at.
"I'm Ron, and thi-", the redhead was interrupted by the Harry kid.
"He's Ron", he pointed to the girl. "And this is Hermione. I'm Harry. Harry, er, Potter". The expression in his face changed to fear. "Do I know you?".
Harry Potter. Well. Just my luck. I was stuck in the compartment of the guy I was supposed to kill. Hadn't Hades said alive or dead, though? Forget it. Didn't want to think about it. Why kill him, though. He seemed friendly enough.
When I thought things were going okay, I saw them resume their discussion. Harry glared at me. What did I do wrong? "He's the guy from the dream", his glare intensified. What was it with these glares? "Now tell me, why are you here, and what do you want". Have you ever tried to tell someone that you want to kill them? Not easy.
"Bruh, explain what I did wrong. Why would I be in a dream of yours. I've never met you. I don't want anything to have to do with you", which was entirely true, "and I would appreciate it if you could stop this nonsense". Wow. I'd never sounded so convincing in my life. Even they were nodding along with my words.
The funny thing? They listened to me. I mean, I've never been able to convince anyone in my life These wizards and witches were very gullible. I heard a voice coming from outside. The Trolley Witch.
I saw Harry shove a bunch of coins at me. "Here. Get the food you want".
I shoved it back at him. "Excuse me? I can pay for it myself".
"Ah. Show me your money, then". I wasn't about to take out my dime from my pocket. He made this smug look. "Here". Why though. Why would he give it to me?
Seeing that he won, I said, "Fine", and handed it to her, "Whatever's most popular". Turning to Harry, I said, "I need to check if my friend ate". Having been dared to spy on Nico before, I knew that he wasn't fond of eating.
All three of them stared at me, like, this guy has friends? Woah!
I tried my best to glare at them, only resulting in laughter. "Can we meet him?", said Hermione, who seemed the most… mature. I nodded silently and went to call Nico.
I wasn't stupid. As soon as I got outside I heard it. I heard them speak. I saw the faint shadow of Hermione say, "He wants to harm you Harry. You saw. Make friends with him. Try to convince him not to". Why were we set up for this?
"Nico you ate, right?", I said, knowing that he didn't. "You're gonna die if you don't eat".
He scowled. "I will die if you don't stop being like this, Andrew Park". Where on earth did he learn my last name?
"Shut up. What do you mean this? I can't stop being me. I'm too awesome". He cringed. "You should get changed".
"You're not in charge of me", he snapped.
"Well I don't want you dying an early death", I said. Hey. Don't make fun of my comeback!
Five minutes later, I was changed into my robes.
There was a knock on the door. Then the door opened.
"Hey", said Ron. The first time I'd actually heard him speak. "Can we meet your friend?".
Nico Di Angelo's POV
"Hey, I'm Harry Potter", said Harry. I glared at Andrew. He didn't tell me?
I kept a straight face, because I knew that Harry was expecting a reaction from me. He looked slightly surprised when I didn't say or hint anything. "I'm Nico. I assume you've already been acquainted with Andrew Park?".
"Yeah", Harry said. He seemed to be making another attempt to get something out of me. Andrew nervously sat on the edge of the seat, away from me and him. "Be honest, Nico Di Angelo. Have I ever met you, or your friend?". Wow. Amateur. This guy really didn't know how to get information properly.
I guess I could've anticipated it, but I was too tired to see Harry come charging at me. He had me pinned against the wall in a split second. I guessed that he thought I was easy to get information from since I was so small and skinny. (No. I am not asking you to judge. It is a fact. Shut up).
I thought of unsheathing my sword, but realizing that it would cause havoc and panic, I kept it safely stored in my robes. Why not act as if it was working. "Sorry!", Andrew looked so surprised. I tried to convey to him that it wasn't real with a look. He seemed to understand.
"Bruh, chill. What did he ever do to you? Besides, I don't think you'd like it if you got reported". He gave this sort of glare, (not as good as mine, of course), to Andrew, and let me down.
It wasn't until we got off the train that I noticed the small note in my pocket.
I'm not done with you yet.
What an idiot.
