Hey y'all! Welcome to chapter two of this traumatic angst fest. I guess the same trigger warning from the last chapter applies to this one as well. Oh shit there's another one. Trigger warning for an instant of child abuse.

Enjoy!

Levi doesn't drain the tub. Hange begged him not to. She wants to find their baby's remains.

Instead he lifts her from the tub and uses a few soaped up towels to wash and rinse Hange off. When she's clean he wraps her in his towel and carries her to his bed.

Someone's laid out a set of hange's plain clothes, some underwear, and what he can only assume is a sanitary napkin. It had to have been Ina. Even when she's not here, she's still taking better care of Hange than Levi ever could.

Hange regains some of her strength and is able to dress herself. Before helping with her pants, Levi injects the pain medication into the fleshy part of Hange's thigh. She doesn't react, even though Levi knows it must sting terribly.

"We have to bury it." Hange mumbles while trying to get up. Her legs fail her. Levi catches her and helps her sit back on the bed.

"We will, Hange. But right now you need to rest. Let the medication do its job."

Hange just lies back and starts to sob. Covering her face with her hands. She can't even pinpoint what's going on in her head right now. Her emotions are all over the place.

"We… we were gonna have a baby…." Hange whimpers. "I couldn't keep it. I couldn't protect our baby!"

Levi lays down next to Hange, facing her.

"Hange, this isn't- you had no control over this. Please don't blame yourself. It's not your fault."

"Yes it is!" Hange fires back. "I ate terrible food all month. I never slept. I overworked myself. It is my fault."

"But, you didn't know. Neither of us did." Levi tries to console her." You can't blame yourself for what you didn't know. You had no control over any of this. No one did."

"I… I know we talked about waiting and planning. But when I thought there was a possibility…. I got excited. I- I wanted it. I wanted a baby. I was going to take a test at the end of the week and- and surprise you. I… I wanted it."

Levi doesn't respond at first. He's still processing today's events. Still going through what just happened. He's only come to accept the fact that Hange suffered a miscarriage mere minutes ago.

"When did you think there was a possibility? Had you... gotten confirmation?" He hopes and prays that she doesn't find his question accusatory. That the last thing he wants to do.

"Well my cycle was late this month." She can't meet his gaze as she admits this to him. "That was my first clue, but it's been late before so it wasn't enough on it's own to convince me to take a test."

"Why didn't you tell me?" The hurt in his tone is unmistakable.

"Because I thought it was nothing! It wasn't until I started getting sick that I realized I might be pregnant. But..." Her brief pause has Levi holding his breath.

"I was still in denial. I wrote it all off as the stomach flu. I'm so fucking stupid! I should have known better!" Hange verbally attacks herself. "I don't know where my logic went. I knew better!"

"Come on, Hange. This is the busiest time of year for you. You're brilliant but even you get overwhelmed. Between expedition strategies, Eren's experiments and Ina's care; it makes sense that this didn't take priority."

"It should have! What mother doesn't prioritize that shit?! I should have made the time!"

"Made time where? When?" Levi knows that logic is the only thing that will calm her down. The only way she'll stop killing herself over this. She relies on her sharp mind and intuition. Her superhuman intelligence.

"The second I was late I should have taken the test." Hange concludes.

Levi lets out a frustrated sigh. "Answer me one thing. Is it possible that the miscarriage still could have happened even if we'd both known you were pregnant?"

She opens her mouth but no words follow. That happens several times. She decides not to say anything.

"You know even better than I do that even if you do everything right, shit can still go sideways. Look at how thought out our expeditions are. How is it that we plan for the worst and we still barely make it back with our lives every fucking time?"

Hange wipes her tears and sniffles. "Murphy's Law." She mumbles.

He knew this would work. Appealing to her highly trained scientific mind is far easier than appealing to emotions neither of them want to understand.

"Exactly." Levi nods. "What can go wrong, will go wrong. No matter how many variables you control."

"Levi," Hange bites her lip. More tears coming to her eyes. "I'm so sorry!"

"Stop- stop apologizing. Stop it!" Levi doesn't mean to sound so harsh.

It's then that Hange sees a single tear fall from his eye. He's clearly trying to be strong for her. Attempting not to fall apart so she can have her moment to grieve and process the pain of this day.

"Enough, Hange. Stop blaming yourself, I'm begging you."

"I just- I can't believe this happened." Hange sounds about as dazed and confused as Levi feels.

He doesn't expect her to punch him in the jaw.

"What the fuck?!" Levi shouts.

"If you hadn't have forgotten the fucking condom we wouldn't be here! I told you we needed to be careful!" Even though she's still teary eyed Levi can tell she's seething with anger that definitely wasn't there a minute ago.

She punches him again. Levi grabs her arm before she can hit him a third time.

"We both forgot and you know that." He retorts, pushing her away none too kindly.

Hange rolls her eyes. Appearing to grow even angrier with him.

"I told you I wanted to plan these things, Levi. I told you! This is exactly what I didn't want to happen!" She tries to punch him again.

Levi all but pushes Hange away and moves to stand. In a few quick strides he's out the door. He doesn't go far. Rather he just sits on the floor, leaning on the wall next to his door.

Without really thinking, he bangs the back of his head against the wall.

Once. Twice. Three times.

Well fuck. He's not having a nightmare.

Levi doesn't hear himself sobbing until it's far too late. He couldn't compose himself if he tried.

What in the name of Sina, Maria, and Rose just happened? Did … they really lose a child? Were they seriously going to have a baby up until today?

Now there is nothing but pain and adrenaline coursing through her body.

Hange is right. This is his fault. If he hadn't taken 30 seconds to grab a condom they wouldn't be here. Hange wouldn't be lying on his bed in unbearable agony. The bathtub wouldn't be filled with the remains of the person they created together.

"Captain Levi?"

Levi doesn't care to look up and see who just called him. He wishes he had the strength to tell this person to go the fuck away when he feels them sit next to him. So close, their shoulder touches his.

"I'm sorry." That's definitely Lenz's voice. "Whatever's going on, it's gonna be alright. Not now, but one day."

Why does his head fall to her shoulder? Why doesn't he push her away when she hugs him?

Why did his wife just lose a baby?

"Why?" He sobs.

"It's okay." She whispers.

Ina approaches Levi's quarters with a covered tray only to find Krista sitting next to Papa outside his room, his head resting on her shoulder. Eyes closed. She can tell he's been crying.

"Sissy? What are you doing here?"

"He's pretty upset about something. I just sat with him. Peanut… is your- what happened to your arm?"

"It doesn't matter. How long has he been asleep?"

"About 15 minutes. I don't mind sitting with him."

"Don't ask him any questions when he wakes up." Ina's command almost sounds like a threat.

"I… wasn't planning on it. Do you know what's-"

"What the fuck did I just say?"

Ina won't wake papa by raising her voice. These questions are so irritating. No one seems to be listening to her today. If Ina had use of both her hands she'd smack all the questioners to shut them the hell up.

Krista is also sure to keep her voice down. "What's with the attitude?"

Ina rolls her eyes. She doesn't have time for this. "It's none of our business. That's why I'm saying don't ask. Please stay here with Papa. I'm going to check on Mama."

Ina doesn't give Krista a chance to respond. She balances the tray on her casted arm and opens the door to Levi's quarters.

Her pain threshold must be through the roof for her to be able to do something like that so casually.

Krista has so many questions, but if she moves, she'll wake the captain. Dammit Ina. You get a pass this time.

"Mama? It's me."

"Not now, Ina." Hange turns on her side. Damn, her entire body is sore as hell.

"I know you don't want to see me, but you need to eat. I made it special just for you. It's carb heavy. You need that right now."

"I said not now."

"I know what you said. I'm saying you need to eat."

"Ina I swear if you don't leave-"

"I'm sorry. I'm not trying to bother you. I want to take care of you. Please, just try a little bit. Then I'll leave."

There's a loud crash from inside Levi's room and the noise wakes him.

"What was that?" He starts.

Krista is getting more confused by the second.

"I don't know, it came from your room."

"Hange…"

Levi jumps to his feet and runs into his room. Krista stands but doesn't enter behind him. She's never been in the captains personal quarters, and doesn't feel like she should come in unless asked.

"Oh god, Ina! Are you okay?!"

That might just be the invitation Krista needs. She finally ventures inside Levi's room only to find the captain picking Ina up off the floor. She's covered in what looks like tomato sauce and pasta noodles. Krista doesn't make her presence known. Rather she tries to pick up the scattered food and broken dishes and gather it on the tray. Hopefully Krista can clean up the mess and disappear before anyone notices her.

"Hange, what the fuck did you do?!" Levi shouts at the still form on the bed.

Ina shakes the stray food from her hair. "Papa, it's fine. I'm okay."

Levi looks Ina over. Her cheek is definitely showing premature signs of bruising.

Hange hit her.

Levi could swear his vision literally goes red for a minute. He doesn't see his sick wife anymore. He sees someone who put their hands on his child. On their child. How could Hange do this? After Ina spent all day taking care of her?

"No no no, Papa cut it out I'm fine!" Ina puts herself between Levi and Hange. Who hasn't moved or said a word. Just lies there, facing away from everyone.

Levi tries to push past Ina. "How fucking dare you!"

"No! Stop! I'm fine!" Ina puts everything she has and a little bit that she doesn't into keeping him back.

Fighting each other is only going to delay their road to recovery. It'll hurt them both forever. She knows that better than anyone.

Levi doesn't think he's ever been this angry. "You don't ever put your filthy fucking hands on her!"

Ina is not stronger than Levi. She's still the only person aside from Mama who can stop and/or slow him down mid stride. They both know she won't be able to hold him much longer. Her wrist is killing her and her cheek is about ready to swell her eye shut. Mama has a strong right hook.

"Sissy help!" Ina calls out to krista. A desperation sounding in her voice that no one has ever heard before.

"Help!" Ina cries again. "Please! Help me stop him!"

Krista knows she's going to regret getting involved in this disaster, but also knows she'd regret not helping Ina more. She braces herself, then jumps on Levi's back and wraps her arms around his neck. They won't be able to stop him. Instead they'll have to get really creative.

Levi reacts instantly. Trying everything he can to get the fucking brat off his back.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Krista chants and tightens her grip around his neck.

As a last ditch effort Levi throws himself backwards. They hit the ground hard while his weight crashes down on her. Krista feels that impact with every cell in her body. Her hip is loose in its socket and she's seeing stars. Her yell of pain is right in his ear. She still doesn't let go.

"I'm sorry!"

Go to sleep you freak of nature!

Levi finally succumbs to lack of oxygen and passes out.

Krista is dreading the moment he comes to. She pushes the surprisingly heavy Captain off of her and tries to sit up, but immediately cries out in pain. Yup. He dislocated her fucking hip.

"Oh god, Sissy I'm so sorry!" Ina falls to her knees, trying and failing to catch her breath. "I'm so sorry!" She cries.

Her sobbing is silent to the world. If anyone got a look at her face, they'd be wondering how she's making no sound. Ina is a mess. Tears streaming from her eyes. Mouth wide open in the middle of a muted scream while she lets her frustration beat her for all of 30 seconds.

Ina takes 3 deep breaths and dries her tears with her dress.

Get it together. Get it together.

The resilient child stands up again and walks over to where Papa is passed out. She pulls him to a sitting position before hoisting him onto her back. Her knees try to buckle but she doesn't let them.

Not now.

Just a little longer.

Keep it together. For mama and papa.

Now for sissy, too.

"I'll bring some help back. I promise." Ina says to Krista as she takes slow measured steps to catch her footing. She leaves the chaotic room.

"S-squad leader? Are - are you okay?"

No answer.

What is going on?!

"Squad leader, please. Is there anything I can do?"

A response. Krista doesn't hear it.

"What?"

"Get out! Get out!" Hange shouts at the top of her lungs. She picks up the thing closest to her and hurls it at krista, who wills her body to move even though she really shouldn't.

Hange throws her blankets aside and stands. She comes at Krista with blazing fury in her eyes.

"I'm going! I can't walk! Please!"

Krista has only ever seen Hange angry a few times. Each time she damn near shit her pants. Now she's incapacitated with the angriest squad leader she's ever seen.

Hange effortlessly lifts Krista off the ground, carries her into the hallway and throws her to the ground then quickly disappears into Levis room. Krista can't help it when she straight up screams. The pain from her hip on par with being shot. Maybe even a little worse.

Her comrades find her writhing and screaming in pain outside captain Levi's personal quarters.

"Ina? Oh my God what happened to you?" Eren notices Ina walking toward the infirmary, an unconscious Levi on her back. Her arm in a cast, food in her disheveled hair, and very fresh bruise on her cheek.

She doesn't answer. Her eyes are completely glazed over.

"Ina?"

Eren finally gets some sense and physically stands in her path. He takes Levi from Ina's back and shuffles the surprisingly heavy Captain onto his own back.

Ina falls to her hands and knees. Panting as though she's just run a marathon.

"S- sis-" why is it so hard to breathe?

She collapses even more and curls up on her side. Groaning as though she's in immense pain. Every time she tries to get up her limbs fail her. Eren has never seen her like this.

"Ina, let's get you inside." Eren tries to help her up but she violently flinches when he touches her. Something she hasn't done since she first arrived here all that time ago. All these injuries. They can't be accidents. Somebody on base hurt her.

"Ina, it's just me. It's big brother." He whispers. Captain Levi is not getting any lighter though.

"Sissy…" Ina pants. "You need to go help sissy. She's hurt."

"I will in just a minute. Right now I want to take care of you."

Ina shouts as she shakes her head. "No! I'm fine!"

"Hey, it's alright. It's okay. I know you're fine, Ina. Why don't we just get you and your Papa to the infirmary. That's where you were headed right?"

She doesn't look up at him. Just nods.

"Alright then, one thing at a time. It's okay. You're okay."

She could always count on Eren this way. He never asked questions. Rather he always did his best to help Ina in whatever way he could. He waits to ask until the crisis is over. Unlike everyone else.

Eren sets Levi down on the infirmary bed with a shit ton of effort. Goddamn, for a short man he's heavy as fuck. How in the name of all that is holy was Ina carrying him at all? Eren could barely do it and he's 3 times Ina's size. This child is fucking bionic.

"Oh shit! Sissy! Big brother you- you have to go get- go get her. She's hurt! I got her hurt again!" Ina cries and tries to make a break for the door.

Eren catches her before she can get very far. He wraps his arms around her rather tightly, ignoring her when she tries to fight him off.

"No! We have to- we have to help-"

Ina tries to break free but Eren doesn't let her go. Nor does he say anything. She drops to her knees and he slows her descent. Still keeping that tight hug. The longer he holds on, the more Ina feels her body relax. She has no idea what's going on. Why this tight hug feels so incredible.

Why can she breathe again? She's told everyone not to ask any questions. It looks like she needs to practice what she preaches.

Eren keeps Ina in this hug for just a few seconds longer. When he releases her, she doesn't try to sprint away. Life has returned to her eyes. Well… her eye. Her cheek has swollen her left eye shut.

Ina mumbles her gratitude. "I- um- thank you, big brother."

Eren smooths Ina's wild hair back while also picking out the random bits of noodles and dried tomato sauce. "Anytime, Peanut."

He has about 46 questions to ask about all of this. Now clearly isn't the time though. Ina is past her limit and a barrage of question would send her back into overdrive.

She starts to cry.

"Talk to me, Ina."

"I've been- I tried so hard. I did everything I could to help them… and I just made it worse." She finally breaks down.

Eren pulls Ina onto his lap and into another hug.

"I'm sure you did the best you could." He comforts her.

"It wasn't enough!" She grabs a fistful of eren's shirt and starts to sob. "I shouldn't- I shouldn't have gotten involved. I should have left it alone."

Eren rocks Ina back and forth. "You're just not that kind of person, peanut. You do what you can to help in any given situation. That's not a bad thing."

"I- I just-" the sound of screaming cuts Ina's thought short.

Eren recognizes that voice. It has to be Krista. She sounds like she's in a world of pain. Ina wasn't kidding when she said that someone needed help.

"Oh God! Sissy!"

Armin and another scout carry a wailing Krista into the infirmary and deposit her on the closest free bed. Ina rushes to her side in an instant, Eren hot on her heels.

"Sissy! I'm so sorry!"

Eren pulls her away from the bed so the infirmary aides can do their jobs. "Ina step back for a second."

"It's her hip you guys! Her hip is dislocated!" Ina yells.

"What?! How did that happen?!" The first infirmary aide-Cleo- asks.

"Never mind that! Just help her!"

"We don't have any anesthesia… there's no way we can reduce this while she's awake."

"Just do it! Do it!" Krista shrieks. "Give me something to bite down on and do it!"

The second infirmary aide-Thomas- starts giving orders. "Eren stay at the head of the bed with her. Use your belt. Cleo and Armin, grab those sheets. Ina, honey I need you to stand back, okay?" The little girl nods and reluctantly takes a few more steps back.

Cleo takes eren's belt and folds it before placing it between Krista's teeth. "Krista this is never supposed to be done on someone who's awake."

The blonde woman nods and takes a deep breath, giving them the final okay.

"Wait!" Krista yells after spitting the leather out. "Munchkin? Ina?"

"I'm here, sissy!"

"Don't look okay! Sissy is going to be fine just don't look!"

Ina turns around until she's facing the bed Papa is laying on. Even though he's still knocked out, Ina finds herself taking his hand. She's scared and needs comfort that only he could give her.

"Alright, Remember guys ease into it. If we move too fast we could tear the muscle." Ina hears Thomas instructs.

She's not looking but Ina finds herself shutting her eyes anyway. Ina has never dislocated her hip but she knows people that have. That pain is beyond anything she could ever imagine.

This is all her fault. If she hadn't have asked Sissy to help her, Papa wouldn't have hurt her this way. Ina is making a new promise to herself to never ask for help again. Every single time she has, someone was badly hurt. Big brother and sister were shot. Papa's heart was broken. Now a bunch of people are hurt and it's all her fault.

Ina can't bear to have the people she loves suffer this way.

She squeezes Papa's hand and buries her face in the mattress when sissy starts wailing again. Her fault. She did that to sissy. She did all of this.

The screaming stops abruptly. Ina feels her heart sink to the soles of her feet. She quickly releases Papa's hand and makes a beeline for the door. Ina keeps running until she's in her room. She locks the door behind her and crawls under her bed.

It's too much. This is all too much. Ina has been overwhelmed all day and the thought that she may have just killed her big sister is ready to drive her to the point of madness.

She lets her grief consume her. Let's anguish swallow her entire body whole.

I'm so sorry I made everything worse.

And that's the end of this thrill ride of a chapter. I think this is it for trigger warnings at least for a chapter or two. A little more graphic stuff but none that's as gruesome as chapter 1.

A lot of people are kinda surprised by Ina's vast knowledge and I just have to say that when you're stuck fending for yourself from a young age, you learn a lot about life and about yourself. Ina is basically a top notch survivalist. She knows so much because she's seen so much.
