Chapter 2
The Paw Patrol arrived at the scene, and dispersed into their assigned areas. Little did they know the same person that was responsible for the crash, was on top of one of the nearby buildings, eyeing the pups very closely. Back with the Paw Patrol, a small crowd had formed watching the rescuers. Ryder paired up with Marshall to check in on Mr. Porter. As he walked up, he took note about the condition of the van. The whole front of the vehicle was completely crushed against the wall and some oil was leaking out. Once he reached the front, a small gasp escaped his mouth. There was Mr. Porter, he was leaning on his steering wheel with blood dripping to the side of his face. Ryder reached inside through the broken window and checked for a pulse, he released a breath of relief as he felt a faint pulse. He turned to Marshall, who waited for orders. "Marshall, bring your ambulance as close as you can and bring out your stretcher, ask Zuma to help you out."
"Alright Ryder," the EMT pup replied then ran off. After a while, Marshall returned along with Zuma with the stretcher and ambulance. Ryder, along with a couple of citizens, placed Mr. Porter on the stretcher and lifted him away. While doing so, Ryder thought that since Adventure Bay didn't have a hospital, he'd have to call in a favor. He pulled out his pup pad and dialed the contact. It almost picked up immediately, showing Foggy Bottom's mayor.
"Ryder? Why are you calling me? I'm in the middle of working," the mayor questioned clearly annoyed.
"Sorry to interrupt mayor Humdinger but we have an emergency. I'm aware that Foggy Bottom has a hospital, well there's been a car accident here in Adventure Bay and I need that hospital. May we use it?" Ryder asked hopefully. Though the mayor was skeptical and didn't give easily.
"And why would I help you?"
"Please mayor. If Mr. Porter doesn't get to the hospital quick then he could-" Ryder paused. He didn't want to admit that possibility, but luckily Humdinger understood.
"Alright, since the Paw Patrol has saved the kitten catastrophe crew multiple times, I guess it's time we repay the favor."
"Thanks Humdinger, Marshall will be on his way to your hospital." With that, the ten year old hung up and went towards the ambulance, not bothering to put the pup pad away.
"Marshall, take Mr. Porter to Foggy Bottoms hospital, Humdinger gave us permission. Head back to the Lookout when you're done," Ryder ordered.
"Alright Ryder, see ya soon!" Marshall said then drove off. Ryder sighed as he hung his head. 'Wow. This was some rescue, I hope Mr. Porter is okay. Don't think otherwise, of course he's fine! You have to show everyone that he's fine and your fine' Ryder thought. He turned around, ready to head back to work, but stopped. Alex was in front of him, still in tears.
"Is grandpa okay?" The boy spoke in a small voice. Ryder looked around and saw that everyone was looking at him and Alex, even his pups who finished their individual jobs. He turned back to Alex to tell him the news, but paused. The boy in front of him looked just like him when he asked if his parents were okay from… the house fire. Unfortunately they didn't, the reason why he founded the Paw Patrol.
"Ryder?" The little voice pulled him back from his thoughts.
"Well, Mr. Porter was sent to the hospital and-"
"You said he would be okay!" Alex yelled, cutting him off.
"Well he's in good hands. He should be okay," Ryder spoke softly as he placed his hand on Alex's shoulder but it was harshly removed.
"YOU PROMISED!" Alex screamed then ran off towards the direction of Mr. Porter's restaurant. Ryder dropped his head in failure, but then it started to turn to frasturation. 'Alex was right. I did promise to him that Mr. Porter would be okay.' Ryder thought, gripping his pup pad, that he was still holding, so tight his knuckles turned white. 'If only we were faster! The Paw Patrol is supposed to protect the people, so how come we failed!' He channeled his anger into the grip he held, and roughly chucked his pup pad to the van, leaving it shattered on the floor. Everyone flinched by the noise, though his pups slowly moved towards their leader.
"Ryder?" The ten year old turn to see his pups, all in caution. He sighed and smiled slightly. "Sorry pups. We're all finished here, go home. I'll meet you there later." They were a little reluctant at first but agreed and left, along with the same crowd that was there before. Though one pup was left, the second in command.
"Chase, go home," Ryder sighed.
"Sorry Ryder but you are not fit to be alone right now. I know you well, this mission wasn't easy and you were going to talk to Alex, right?" Chase asked confidently.
Ryder nodded.
"Well I think it would be better if we go together. Like I said, you and Alex are in no condition to be alone after what happened. That's why I'm coming with you."
"You're such a good pup. But I also know you too well, you don't want to be alone either eh?" Ryder chuckled when he saw the german shepherd blush. They both started to walk towards the restaurant in silence as the sun started to set, though what they didn't know was that the mysterious person watched everything and chuckled to himself. "Now, for step two, but I need a volunteer. Hmmm…," he searched for anyone close by and caught sight of a man sitting on a bench enjoying his day.
"Perfect."
