Here it is at last. Chapter 2. Here we join Duncan and Azura on their travels to Petalburg City. And through to Rustboro. Where Duncan's old teacher awaits. Leader Roxanne.

What am I doing? What if Dad didn't want me to pick Mudkip. After all, Dad's got his Sceptile in the Gym. He doesn't use it though. "Hey where are you going?" Me? I'm headed to Petalburg City. Not to face Norman though. Passing through to get to miss Roxanne's Gym. "Hmm. Well, Me and my Squirtle were looking to face off against Roxanne too. If you're one of her former pupils you must be almost on par with her Gym level team right?" Wait... A Squirtle. That's a Kantonian starter pokemon. Is this guy from Kanto? Sorry, what was your name? "Me? I'm Blue, From pallet town in Kanto. We moved to Hoenn the day after I received Squirtle from Professor Oak." "Nice to meet you. I'm Duncan from Rustboro City here in Hoenn, Do you want to travel together? It would be nice to have some company through Hoenn." "Yeah sure. Whatever." Wow. What a pleasant guy.
Blue
I feel like I recognize Duncan. But why? He's not from Kanto, so I can't possibly know hi- Oh right! Of course. He's the fifth gym leader's son. That's why I know this guy.
"Hey, Duncan. how do you feel about having a battle? I never got a chance to battle Red, he was supposed to be my rival... but then we moved here so i never did battle him. From what I've heard he chose Charmander, and already has 4 gym Badges." "So it's your first trainer battle then? I hope I'm good enough to fill Red's shoes after all, I guess you could say that I'm your rival now." Gah! His attitude is just like my brother Gary's was. And Gary was Champion of Kanto before Ash Ketchum defeated him. Well, let's do this thing. "Squirtle, Show 'em who's boss!" "Let's go Mudkip!" The mud fish pokemon burst out of it's ball with so much enthusiasm. Whereas the tiny turtle pokemon had just awoken from being asleep. "Squirtle Squirt!" I already knew Squirtle was tired from our long journey two days ago, but i thought it could battle. "Okay Squirtle, use tackle!" "Mudkip Dodge it!" the mud fish pokemon was still too slow and it't tail got caught by the tiny turtle pokemon. "Okay then Mudkip. Show them a real tackle buddy!" How can a Mudkip move so fast? Will Squirtle be okay? The tiny turtle pokemon shouted in pain as Mudkip's attack connected. "Hey Blue, everything okay? Squirtle looks worried." What does he mean by that? I take a minute to look at my Squirtle. "I'm sorry Squirtle, I didn't realize how tired you still were from our trip on Saturday. Return buddy" "That was a good call Blue, Squirtle did his best for you, despite how tired it was. That's true trust if I've ever seen it. Plus my Mudkip has been able to train against my strongest pokemon, which has allowed him to become much more powerful than a regular Mudkip." Again, this guy is so like Gary. Whenever I felt sad back in pallet town, Gary would come to help me feel happier. I guess that's why I'm glad he's my brother. It's also why I really want to travel with Duncan. He can bring out the best in me in the long run, I hope. Which will in turn let me bring out the best in Squirtle.
Duncan
Blue has the potential to become a great trainer. His Squirtle was strong. Mudkip barely managed that win. I know it was a fast battle but that's because Mudkip and Squirtle are so inexperienced that a few good hits takes either one down. That wasn't a proper victory. It was luck, I don't know what made Blue's Squirtle so uneasy though. "Mudkip, Return. You did great buddy." So now that's it then huh? off to Petalburg, Maybe Blue can meet my dad, and maybe that will help him realize that I'm no ordinary trainer. "Hey Blue, Don't feel bad about that. I got lucky, You could've beat Mudkip." "Really? You think so?" Blue asked. "Yeah. I do. Squirtle are very strong starter pokemon, and you'll have an advantage over Roxanne too. She specializes in Rock types. Like Brock from Pewter city in Kanto." Wait, who even is Brock? I only know of his name and his famous Onix, that defeated Ash's Pikachu. "We should get moving Blue, if we want to be at Petalburg before night. we still have the majority of Route 102 to get through." Blue followed along quietly. "Azura, come out girl." The Moonlight pokemon sprinted over to a tree, and sat by it, seemingly waiting for Duncan to go over, Instead, he asked her to walk by his side. The Moonlight pokemon's rings began to glow a bright blue as she sensed another pokemon nearby. "Taillow! Taillow!" Oh great. a group of Taillow are attacking something. "EEVEE!" the desperate Evolution pokemon screamed in agony. "Umbree! Umbreon!" I agree Azura, let's go help out. "Come on Blue! That Eevee needs our help urgently. to give you a better understanding, Taillow act like Spearow when in large groups. They pick on small pokemon like Eevee." With that, Blue began to run towards the group of hungry and angry Taillow. "Squirtle, I need your help! Use water gun!" The tiny turtle launched the attack before it had fully materialized, causing one of the Tiny swallow pokemon to flee, and the rest began to follow suit. that was until a Swellow arrived. And it too, began to pick on the small Eevee. "Blue, call Squirtle out of there! Swellow are very dangerous!" "Nah We're good. Squirtle's got this. I believe in him. Bubble on the Swellow now Squirtle!" The Swallow pokemon shrugged off the weak attack and focused it's attention on the tiny turtle pokemon. "Poochyena, I need your help! Use Thunder fang!" The Bite pokemon burst out of his ball full of energy, with a thunder fang prepared, waiting for me to tell it when to strike. "Now Poochyena. Before it reaches Squirtle!" The Bite pokemon vanished due to it's high speed and the Swallow pokemon yelled out in pain as the strong super-effective attack found it's mark. "Azura, Protect that Eevee at all costs okay." Now then where was poochy- Oh god. "Poochyena! Are you alright?" the Bite pokemon was trapped in Swellow's talons. What do I do? Poochyena doesn't have any moves that it can hit that bird with. "Poochyena. Return." the red beam reached the Bite pokemon and it was safe now. The Swallow pokemon was now beginning to retreat along with the Taillow as they realized that they would not be able to eat the Eevee. "Squirtle, Make sure they leave. Use water gun, max power" The biggest blast of water that I've ever seen left the tiny turtle pokemon's mouth, and sent the flock of Taillow and the Swellow flying. but also left Blue's Squirtle in a bad state. "Squirtle, return. You did great. that water gun was nearly as strong as a Hydro pump." The young Eevee is still healthy Master Duncan "GAH! What the heck was that?!" My apologies, I did not mean to scare you. I am Azura. I thought I heard Azura talking to me. But that's impossible, only psychic type pokemon can use telepathy, and very few psychic types do. "Duncan. Are you alright?!" I looked up to see Blue looking at me, he helped me get back up. In my shock, I must've fell over, quite hard too. "Yeah I'm okay. I think Azura just spoke to me using telepathy. But Dark type pokemon like Azura can't use telepathy. I think." Remember Master Duncan, I'm no ordinary Umbreon. My mother was an Espeon. That alone gives me some limited psychic powers. Wait. So you're actually talking to me Azura? Yes. Mudkip and Poochyena also can talk to you, through me that is, if you wish. Maybe later Azura. "How's the Eevee doing?" I heard Blue ask, bringing me out of my mental state, talking to Azura. "It's Alright now. I'm going to catch it to take it to the Pokemon Center." Please do. I actually recognize this little one. He's my younger brother. No way Azura. how do you know? The way that he's looking at me, shows that he knows me and is very fond of me. That is how i know. so please catch him for me. My mother and father are probably already dead. Those guys dressed in blue, came and attacked our forest. My dad went out to try and help the other pokemon fight them off. But they were too powerful, and my dad returned, gravely injured. My mother had to pick him up using her psychic powers whilst we ran. I haven't seen either of them since. Azura. I...I...I...I'm so sorry girl, does the Eevee have a name? Yeah. His name is Volt. He's destined to be a Jolteon then. But I'll let him decide if he wants to be one. Does he also have your mothers psychic powers? Yes I do. Oh Hey Volt. Would you like to come with me and your big sis? The small Evolution pokemon nodded frantically. "Here. If you're sure you want to come with me, then push the button in the center of this ball. It's very luxurious." The Eevee looked at Azura almost as if for her permission, Azura nodded at the youngster, who bounded over and pushed the button with his nose. "Eevee!" He shouted happily. Okay Azura, return. "Hey man. You can't have all the fun Duncan. Electrike come on out!" The young Lightning pokemon burst out of its ball in a blinding flash of electricity. It perfectly matched Blue's Personality. "Electrike, sorry it's a short time out of your ball, return." That's a good catch Blue. I wonder how he managed that. Especially as his only pokemon was a weakened Squirtle which is weak to water. Maybe he lied about Squirtle being his only pokemon. Well. We better get a move on. It's beginning to get dark. Azura would love this. Being the Moonlight pokemon. "About your Umbreon and Poochyena. What happened to them? Why're they a different colour?" Blue, tell me. Have you ever heard about shiny pokemon? "I think so yeah. They're very rare though right?" Yes they are rare. Azu- Er Umbreon found me in Rustboro. Before I got Mudkip. She was really my first pokemon. And Professor Birch caught Poochyena, but decided that I would benefit the little guy more than he could. since I was challenging the gyms. However, I've realized that I'm going to struggle against Brawly in Dewford if I can defeat Roxanne. Because he uses fighting types. And two of my three pokemon are weak to fighting types. Although, Umbreon knows psychic, and talked to me using telepathy. "How? I thought only a psychic type pokemon could use telepathy." I did too, until she told me that her mother was an Espeon. "That makes some more sense then, since pokemon inherit their moves and sometimes their powers from their parents. Do you know what pokemon her father was?" Blue noticed me grow tense, "No... I don't but I wish I did. Azura thinks that her parents are dead, She wanted me to catch that Eevee because he is her younger brother. "I had no idea. I'm sorry that I asked about that Duncan. I realize it's a sore spot just now." That's fine Blue, you didn't know. You were right to ask actually, it shows that you care. "Heh, you see Duncan, You remind me a lot of my brother Gary Oak. That's why Squirtle looked worried in my first battle against you, that was when I realized how much you are like Gary. I was lost in thought about him. I haven't seen him since he was beaten by Ash in the indigo plateau. I'm worried about him, After all, Professor Oak, My Great-Grandfather is terrified. He fears that the worst has happened. Especially as he was informed about a new pokemon having been discovered. Mewtwo. You've probably heard about it." Yeah I have heard about Mewtwo. It's meant to be the strongest pokemon ever. "That's the reason that Professor Oak is worried. He's scared that Gary tried to catch Mewtwo, and failed. Badly." Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry Blue. I'm sure that Gary is fine. Last I heard was about him battling Ash in the Sinnoh Region. "Wait. Sinnoh?" Yeah. Anyway, sorry to interrupt this Blue, but we should really get going. It's 10 pm. "WHAT?! It's that late already?!" "Yeah. Azura come on out girl." The blue Umbreon flew out of her ball, and jumped straight onto my hat. What's up girl? It's Him. No... you don't mean "Fancy seeing you here scamp. For the last time. GIVE ME THAT UMBREON!" "I'D NEVER JUST GIVE HER AWAY!" Truth be told, I was terrified of Archie, I had had my suspicions, but didn't want to get Blue involved. Now that had happened. "Duncan? What's Going on?" Blue, Don't worry. That is Archie, and for some reason he wants my Umbreon. Really badly, I already beat him once though. I'm not sure how. "We should run whilst we can." Don't go! I-I-I-I-I-I can sense my mother's scent on that man. I'm worried Duncan. What did he do to her? "What did you do to the Espeon you thug?!" "Oh that minor inconvenience, Mightyena shut her up." NO! I-I-Is she okay? Azura, I can sense her power in this forest so I need you not to panic. Archie didn't kill her, but her powers are getting weaker by the second. "Archie! Leave these kids alone!" Was that... Oh my Arceus It's Steven Stone. "Metagross. Showtime!" Whoa. Metagross is a pseudo-legendary pokemon. It's very powerful. "This is my cue to leave. Steven won't be around to save you next time Scamp!" Thank Arceus he's gone. Agreed. "Metagross. return." "Steven. Sir, You might remember me. I'm Blue, Professor Oak's great-grandson." "Indeed I do. However I must go. Skarmory, Use Fly. To Sootopolis" Can... Can we go and find my mother? Sure. "Azura, Return. I know you don't want to but please do."
Blue
What the heck was that about? Duncan. Wait up. Where are you going? "Both Azura and I sensed her mother out here. Her scent was on Archie. You heard what he said right?" Yeah. He said his Mightyena took care of he- Oh... Oh no. Mightyena is a dark type. Espeon are weak to Dark types. So that Mightyena nearly killed the poor thing. Duncan. I'm with you the whole way. I wont let Archie get away with this. "I'm Glad you're with me. I presume that you've already met our region's Champion then Blue." Wait. Steven is the champion? "Yeah. Be quiet here please, I can feel the Espeon's power. She's Nearby." I nod. Not daring to say anything in case I scared the Espeon, or angered Duncan. His pokemon are way stronger than mine ever will be. Or... Maybe just maybe, we'll catch up. One day.
Duncan
Azura's mother is nearby. I can sense her. "Esp...eon..." I couldn't believe what was lying in front of me, practically on death's doorstep, if it wasn't for the fact that it said what it did, I could've sworn it was a dead corpse of something. The amount of clotted blood on the poor pokemon's fur was ridiculous, it was lucky to be alive. "It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. I have Azura and Volt with me. Your daughter and son." Human. I know not your name, however, I do not believe the words you are saying. "If you'll let me catch you, and get you healed by the Nurse, I can show you." I- Thank you Human. If Eva and Volt can trust you, then I can too. "Who's Eva?" I meant Azura. Eva was her name when she was an Eevee. Has Volt evolved yet? "No, He's still an Eevee. If I find a Thunder Stone, I'll allow him to choose whether or not he chooses to be a Jolteon." Thanks. OW! I'm going to put a luxury ball next to you, do you have enough strength to push the button? Like I did with Azura and Volt, I'm giving you the choice. Do you want to remain wild, or be my pokemon? I'm coming with you. Please, I'm counting on you. Find Fuego. With that, the Espeon was in the ball. it didn't shake. She was too weak to try and resist. Not that she wanted to. "Hey Duncan. Let's Go." "One moment Blue! Ruby, Can Fuego wait until tomorrow? do you know where he is?" I- Yes. He's in Dewford town. There's a family there taking care of him. He's such a great fla- Crap. I need to get to the pokemon center and fast. "Come on Blue! We're going to the pokemon center in Rustboro ASAP" "I'm coming." I wonder what Ruby was trying to say to me. Wait. I think I get it. Fuego must be a flareo- "Aaaaaah!" Ow that hurt. Damn trees. "Yo Duncan. You good?" Yeah. Come on let's go. The pokemon center isn't too far from here. I know the way. After fifteen Minutes of walking, We could've been here faster if it wasn't for that tree. "You boys are up late." Nurse Joy commented. "Nurse Joy please Help this Espeon. It was attacked by Archie of Team Aqua. She was almost killed by his Mightyena." "Of course. I'll be back as fast as I can. You two can stay in the two free rooms we have, they're next door to each other too." Perfect. Thanks Nurse Joy. I got to my room and let Azura and Volt out of their balls. "Hey guys. I found and caught Ruby, Your mother. she's been gravely injured and also told me about your father. He too is alive, and is in Dewford City. Across the water. Luckily that's where we are headed after Roxanne's Gym." Duncan, You have no idea how much this means to us. Seriously, Our mother is in safe hands thanks to you, and my fears have been disproved. Therefore I cannot thank you enough. Azura and Volt then burst into tears. "Duncan, Can I have a Word please?" "Just a minute Nurse Joy." Once Azura and Volt had calmed down again, still crying but not as badly as they were, I went to speak with Nurse Joy. "hey Guys. Nurse Joy wants to talk to me. I'll leave you two here with Mudkip and Poochyena in-case you need their help." Okay. Please Duncan. Let us know how mother is when you get back. "I will Azura. She'll be fine. I promise."
"Duncan, Thanks to you and your friend Blue, That Espeon will be fighting fit by tomorrow afternoon." Perfect. Blue and I were planning to challenge Miss Roxanne's Gym tomorrow. Would it be possible for me to get an afternoon slot against her? So that Ruby can watch Her daughter battle? "Wait. What do you mean by that?" "I'll Explain tomorrow Nurse Joy." "Okay. I'll get that arranged for you." Thanks. I go back to my room to see Azura and Volt sitting on the bed, Azura curled protectively around Volt. "Hey guys, I'm back." Ah there you are Duncan, what's the story? How's our mother? She'll have fully recovered by tomorrow afternoon, and according to Nurse Joy, she'll be able to fight along with us. No. While I do believe you would keep her safe, I'd rather she didn't battle. I don't want my mother to get hurt. I know Azura. She'll be watching our Battle against Roxanne. For which, Volt, you'll be in the stands to watch with Blue and your mother. Azura, I'll probably be needing to use you. Mudkip isn't experienced enough, I think. "Mudkip, Poochyena come out." Poochyena, you're in second, Mudkip you'll be up first against Roxanne's Rock type pokemon. Azura, you're the last resort. It's a battle against two of Roxanne's stronger pokemon. So no doubt I'll need you help. We all agree with that plan. Mudkip is a little worried though. "Finn, Don't worry about it. You'll do great. after all, you have a type advantage." Now now Duncan. don't get overconfident. Roxanne's probably good at working back even from type disadvantages. "You're right Azura, I'm going to sleep, you guys want back in your balls?" All four of my pokemon shook their heads furiously. "Alright then, you guys can come on the bed too. I'll try not to move too much." The moment my head hit the pillow, I was asleep.
Azura
You know, Duncan's such a great trainer. I'm glad that I chose him out of all the people I could've picked. I hope I've made you proud mum. We'll talk after the battle with Roxanne. "Hey Bro, Volt, you awake?" "Hmm? What?" My little brother sleepily said. "I just wanted to ask, Do you like Duncan as much as I do?" Of course he does. He's too you- "Yeah. I mean he helped mum out today. So surely he's a nice person. It's like Granny always said. Be careful that the human you pick is a nice human." Tears were beginning to roll down his cheek and I began to realize he wasn't as young as I had thought. "It's okay bro, let's just get some sleep yeah? We can talk to mum tomorrow." With that, we were all asleep. I awoke before everybody Else and decided that it was time to get Duncan up, first though, I should probably wake up everyone else. "Wake up Volt, come on bro, wake up." I nudged him gently, to get him awake. "W-W-W-W-What's going on sis?" He asked, It's okay, We just need to wake Duncan up. It's already half past twelve. Help me wake up Finn and Poochyena. Once those two were awake, I put my plan into action, I licked Duncan's face, all over, Quite roughly. Hah. This ought to be fun.
Duncan
"Gah! Who's there? Why's my face wet?" I awoke abruptly, after Azura had licked me to try and wake me up. Now Volt was jumping on my chest. "Volt, I'm awake buddy, get off me please? So that we can go train." Training sounds like a good idea. Finn, Poochyena, Volt and I would like to train up a bit before such a big battle. "Okay guys. Volt, I'm going to train Azura personally, so would you mind sparring with Finn and Poochyena?" No. That sounds like fun! The little Eevee replied to me. "Okay. First off, for everyone, we're doing some sprints." Azura eyed me carefully. Sprints? Oh I get it. Speed training for maneuverability right? "Exactly Azura. You're right. We need speed to dodge attacks from these rock types. They will hit hard." for the next 50 minutes, Duncan and his team were running up and down the length of the customary battlefield at the pokemon center. "Phew. That's it for just now. We have a 5 minute break. Then we'll practice dodging ranged attacks. Azura, I'll need your help there." Of course. If it'll help the others then sure. "Thanks girl." 3 minutes into their break, Nurse Joy came out with an Espeon in her arms. "Duncan. The Espeon you brought in has healed fully. I'd advise against using her against any gym leaders until Next week though." The nurse happily informed me, as Ruby sprang out of her arms to be with Azura and Volt. "Thank you Nurse Joy. And to explain what I said last night, This Espeon, is my Umbreon, Azura's mother. That's why we came in so late with her. Archie was going to kill the Espeon when he saw Azura's rings glowing, and decided that he would leave the Espeon in it's badly injured state, to try and take Azura by force. Steven scared Archie off with his Metagross." I felt a single tear roll down my face, knowing that he would likely go after Fuego next. But from what I know about Flareon, I'm sure he can defend himself- Unless Archie uses one of his signature water type pokemon, like his Sharpedo. "Okay, Have a nice day. Oh and good luck for this afternoon, Your battle is booked for 5 pm. Blue's starts in 20 minutes." "Thanks Nurse Joy." Come on guys we're going to watch Blue's battle. "Everybody return." Azura shook her head. "What's up girl?" I'd quite like to see this battle. It could be very interesting. "Fair point. Okay then. Onto my shoulders just now." She nimbly hopped onto my shoulders. I fell over due to her weight on my one shoulder. "Oof!" Are you okay? Yeah. I'm fine. You're just heavier now. Must be extra muscle. Hey! I'm still relatively light for an Umbreon. Be glad I'm not male. I'd be even heavier then. She playfully slapped me with her tail. "Right okay. Off to the Gym we go." I saw Archie walking down the opposite side of the road, or at least I'd thought it was Archie. In Actuality it was my dad, who had no challengers today. He waved when he recognized me and Azura. "Where are you two off to?" he called out from over the road, beginning to cross it. "We're going to Roxanne's Gym. My friend's battle starts soon" My dad ran across the road, "When's yours?" "At 5. Nurse Joy was giving me the time to talk to my Espeon, Azura's mother. Who I saved last night." Thanks again Duncan. It was nice to see my mother so healthy. Maybe I'll let you use her in battles later. Probably not though. "Come on dad, why don't you come and watch? You can meet Blue too, and you'll get to see his battle style." You know that's technically cheating right? Not really Azura, It's only fair. my dad can watch me too. Even though he knows that like him, I fight Defensively, With the power to hit hard when the opportunity shows itself. "Yeah. I'd like to meet him actually, Professor Oak was telling me about him."
Blue
This is it. time for my first gym battle. And I'm before Duncan, I hope that I don't lose. He'll be coming to wat- Yep there he is, with his dad. Wait. Norman came to see MY battle. I see a league official. "Hey is Leader Roxanne here?" "Yes. Follow me. Norman can take your friend to the viewing area." We walked through a door and into the trainers school. The younger kids waved, so I waved back. We went through another set of doors and were now in the gym stadium, and sure enough, Roxanne was waiting there. "So you must be Blue. I've heard a lot about you, and I've always wanted to battle against a fellow Kantonian." Roxanne was quite intimidating actually. "U-Uh yeah. I'm Blue. You're Roxanne right?" I felt a hand on my shoulder. "It's okay, don't be nervous, it's your pokemon and you. Nothing else matters right now. Your friend and his Dad, Norman can wait. They're Not going to help you in this battle now." She was comforting me. Trying to help calm me down. "Thanks Roxanne, uh, I'd like to challenge your gym for the stone badge." Her stance shifted, she looked defeated already. "Can my students watch the battle? In our School we like to show the pupils every Gym battle." That's a really good idea actually, having them watch means that they can learn from the challenger and can see how Roxanne deals with pokemon that she's weak to. "Yeah. I'm more than happy for that. After all, if it helps the kids learn, then I'm all for it." She looked happier when I said that. "Students! We have a challenger! Come and watch!" With that about 60 people flooded into the seats for people who were watching. My eyes met with Duncan's, and he waved, So I waved back Nervously. "Take up your positions in the trainers boxes. The Challenger is allowed to use all of his pokemon against our leader's two pokemon. The battle will finish when either trainer has no more pokemon available to fight. Blue, how many pokemon will you use?" "I'll be using two." "Let's go Geodude!" "A Geodude huh? Okay then. Squirtle you're up!" the tiny turtle pokemon burst of of its pokeball, bursting with energy, Roxanne's Geodude know what was coming. "Squirtle, Water gun!" As the tiny turtle pokemon charged up, the Geodude began to move, "Geodude, dodge with quick attack." I've never seen a rock type move so fast before. That was ridiculous. Okay then, "Squirtle widespread bubble go!" The tiny turtle pokemon began to blast bubbles everywhere, the Rock pokemon grunted as the weak water type move hit home. "That was a crafty move, Well done, you certainly fight like Professor Oak would." Choosing to ignore her remark, Blue called for a high power water gun from Squirtle. The tiny turtle began charging up it's favourite move, to which Roxanne realised was a problem, "Geodude, get out of there!" But before the Rock type could move, it was blasted with what looked to be a slightly weak hydro pump. "That wasn't water gun! that was hydro pump Blue." That's what you think Roxanne, That was nothing. "That was a water gun. Squirtle doesn't know Hydro pump. But it's managed to perfect it's skills into a much more powerful water gun." When the dust had settled and the water fully dissipated, the rock pokemon was face down in the dirt. "Geodude is unable to battle! Squirtle wins!"
Blue's no ordinary trainer. No-one has ever managed to defeat my geodude so fast. "Geodude, return. You did well, Onix, you're up next!" There it was. The massive Rock snake pokemon that Brock was famous for. Roxanne was inspired by Brock. He was her Idol.
"You okay to continue Squirtle?" The tiny turtle looked back and nodded, showing some signs of damage, but nothing too severe. So Blue decided to keep his faithful partner in the battle. "Water Gun! Low power" As the water type starter charged his move, the onix burrowed into the ground, as Roxanne had ordered it to use dig. "Squirtle cancel that. Move around so the onix can't sense you. Use quick attack." The tiny turtle easily stopped its move and started darting around the field.
"Say Duncan, Blue's Squirtle is quite strong. Don't you agree?" Norman stopped talking as the tiny turtle stopped for a moment, to catch it's breath. "Now Roxanne's Onix is going to surface, She was waiting for this dad, After all, she's dealt with plenty of water types," This is true Duncan, Analysed Azura However, she doesn't usually use an Onix if i recall correctly from looking in here before I met you. Azura was correct, Roxanne usually used her nosepass as her final pokemon. "I wonder why she didn't use nosepass..."
"Squirtle, when it surfaces I'm going to need a maximum power water gun buddy." The tiny turtle began to really charge up its favourite move, and the onix resurfaced right next to him. "NOW!" The immense blast of water that the young water type expelled was enough to force the onix over onto its back. After the dust from the move colliding with a boulder dispersed enough the referee made his decision. but not before, "Squirtle, return. Go Electrike!" The Referee glared at Blue. "Onix is unable to battle, Since the challenger still has his Electrike. The challenger wins!" I... I- No. We did it. We actually beat Roxanne, I can't Believe it. "That was a good Battle Blue. I've never seen a Squirtle do that before. you must have trained it very well. Here is the Stone badge. It is proof that you have triumphed over me in battle." The badge was so shiny. All Blue could do was stare at it. "...uh. Thanks Roxanne. Electrike. return" Blue quickly made his way to the pokemon center, where Norman was waiting for him. "That was a good battle kid. I haven't been so enthralled in watching one of Roxanne's battles in years. I look forward to seeing you at my gym. With your Blasto- I mean Squirtle after it's evolved." The Normal type gym leader looked at Blue with a trusting look in his eyes. "Make sure that Duncan doesn't get beat before me. I'd like my battle to be the first one he loses." He had a look of despair in his eyes. I knew instantly that he wanted to be the first to pummel his son. And even though I knew it would be difficult I knew I should at least try. "I'll try Mr Norman sir. Where's Duncan?" "Ah He's outside training with his pokemon."
Duncan
"Okay guys, this is our last chance to train before going against Roxanne. We'll have a sparring competition. Poochyena, Mudkip and Volt. You three can spar with each other. Don't hurt each other too much though okay. Azura, I'll be fighting you." What? That's crazy. Why would i ever do that? She was looking quite angry. Because we are special Azura, So to allow our bond to shine through, we need to fight each other okay. Don't fight dirty okay? Now Azura was with the idea. Bring it on Duncan! Duncan landed a cheap shot punch to her side. she responded with a quick albeit powerful dark pulse, which Duncan jumped over. "You've gotta try harder than that if you want to hit me Azura." This seemed to flip something in the Umbreon's mind. as she began to go all out. She had used 8 dark pulses in just 4 seconds, every single one landing. "OW, Azura, calm down. Geez that hurt a lot actually." The Umbreon raced over to see if her trainer was okay, and received a full force punch to her front left leg, which sent her spinning.
What was that for? Azura asked her trainer. "You've gotta keep your guard up girl. I know that you know I would never kill you, but other pokemon we cannot say the same about. You're a very special pokemon and you have to remember that okay." Duncan was talking to the Umbreon very carefully, as he knew that what he was saying would hurt her, but it was necessary. He began to slowly stroke the moonlight pokemon's head to soothe her as his words sank in. I-I understand. Thank you for helping me realise that mistake Duncan. The umbreon's frame was beginning to tremble, "Hey it's okay Azura. Volt! come over here please." The young eevee sprinted over and immediately understood why i had called him over. "Eevee. Eevee!" I was sure the little guy was trying to comfort Azura, but his attempt only made things worse.
"Hey Duncan! what are you doing?" I heard the very happy Blue shout over. "B-b-blue, please can you go get Roxanne for me? I need to talk to her." Duncan asked, moments away from crying himself. "Sure. Is Azura alright?" Blue was always happy to help his friend, and was particularly fond of Azura. "No. She's not. I need Roxanne's help for this. Even Volt can't help Azura. It's not his fault. I think that she's worried about her dad." Duncan's frame was also beginning to shake slightly. "I'll see what i can do for you buddy," And with that, Blue was out the door of the pokemon center racing to the gym. Why is it always me? I always forget about the value of my own life. And forget to properly defend myself against weaker opponents, or injured opponents. I should've known that Duncan was going to throw a sucker punch there. Dad was right, I'm a failure, I don't realize how rare a pokemon like me is. "Hey Azura. It's not your fault girl. trust me. I shouldn't have said what i did yet. I should have waited longer than this. I'm so so so sorry. You know I would never hurt you. And I won't let ANYONE get away with hurting you outside of a proper pokemon battle. Especially Archie. And you know what you've just said about yourself isn't true. You're my most powerful pokemon." Duncan was now fully crying into Azura's fur. And poor little Volt had no idea as to what to do. so he beckoned Mudkip and Poochyena to come over to their trainer's side and try to help both trainer and pokemon.
At that exact moment Blue and Roxanne burst into the room. Upon seeing Duncan how he was, and seeing all of his pokemon except for Azura by his side, she already knew what had happened. After all, she could hear what she knew was an umbreon crying and beating itself up, and it's trainer desperately trying to stop the pokemon from doing so. "Blue, Those two have a very strong bond you know. It takes a lot for both pokemon and trainer to cry at the same time, because of the same reason, other than the loss of a teammate or family member. This... This shows the true bond between these two." Roxanne had help from a certain friend of Ash's to summarise this. "So then. This is the trainer who caught a pokemon before he had his starter pokemon, and it was a pokemon that doesn't just show up naturally in the wild. This is one lucky trainer." The Pewter city gym leader analyzed. "The bond that these two share is stronger than Ash and Pikachu's. It's extremely rare to find a bond like this. there is so much trust between these two, that they can actually communicate via telepathy. It's even rarer for both pokemon and trainer to feel so strongly about each other, and have so much trust in each other to cry with each other, about possibly different scenarios." Brock had seen this once before, This was the same as him and his newly evolved Steelix, Who would die for Brock's safety. "So what should we do then brock?" Both Roxanne and Blue asked simultaneously. "I suggest leaving them be, and postponing that gym battle that this young man has with you Roxanne. All of this young lad's pokemon have an immense amount of trust in him." The pokemon breeder explained this carefully, "I'm also going over to introduce myself, It might help if the Umbreon has some of the pokemon food that I've developed specifically for this species of pokemon." No. Please Don't go near them! My big sis and the boss are really struggling. I'm the eevee at your feet by the way mister. "Huh. I wasn't aware that eevee could talk telepathically." It's because mum was an Espeon. We also have weak Pyrokinetic abilities, thanks to dad being a Flareon. We've heard that he's on this place called Dewford island. His name is Fuego. This made the professional pokemon breeder think. Where had he heard that name before?... With that guy. What was his name? Brody? Charlie?... No definitely Brody. "The Eevee must mean Brody. The fighting type gym leader here. The eevee was talking about it's dad being called Fuego and was a Flareon." Brock said accidentally. "What was that Brock?" Roxanne was extremely confused as to what Brock had just said. "I didn't mean to say that... Well, Let's leave these guys be. Hey Volt was it? Let Duncan, your trainer know that his gym match has been postponed once he and your sister recover okay?" The Kantonian Gym leader asked the little Eevee before leaving. As Brock got to the door, he saw the Eevee running towards him. When it reached him it hugged his leg tightly. Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you mister. Where can Duncan and sis meet you when they're not crying anymore? Brock smiled reassuringly "They can meet me in the pokemon center buddy. My name is Brock. Let Duncan know that too okay little guy?" Yes of course. Thank you Brock. I'm Volt. You probably should get going. The others are waiting for you. The little Eevee let go of Brock's leg and returned to Duncan's side as Brock finally left the training area.
That's it for this chapter folks. Sorry that you don't get to read about the fight between Roxanne and Duncan yet but I thought that having this emotional segment between the trainer and his Umbreon was a good way to show how stressed they both were about this gym battle. I also thought that bringing Brock into the story made sense, since Roxanne has quite a large roll in these first two chapters, and Brock is her idol canonically.
Quick note- I'm also in the middle of writing another story about a different trainer, still in hoenn, who is scouted out by a male shiny umbreon at the start. I'm not sure when the full first chapter will be released, however the beginning of the first chapter has been posted so people can get a rough idea of what the story is about.
