Author's Notes: Hi guys! This is the first official chapter of the first book of Mark Andrews, Sole Survivor. I hope you guys like it. This is just a taste of what is to come. I will be updating pretty frequently throughout the rest of this week, but as the work week comes back, I will have to maybe only update with a couple chapters three to four times a week instead of every day. I hope this isn't too hard, but I know how people can get when their favorite stories aren't updated in a while. However, that isn't me. I don't care if a story updates every day or every year, I will still try to enjoy the author's hard work and effort. Last but not least, there are some Call of Duty references in this chapter. Comment if you get what they are. Thank you for the big amount of views in just a short period of time on Chapter Zero. Anyway, I must go! Comments and reviews are very appreciated.
Disclaimer: I don't own Fallout. Bethesda does.
Chapter One: Prologue
Second Lieutenant Mark Andrews
75th Ranger Regiment, United States Army
New Year's Day, 2077
Outskirts of Wuhan, China
8:30 AM
"Everybody ready? Weapons ready?" Mark Andrews ordered his squad as they boarded the Vertibird. The vertibird that they were boarding was a new type of VTOL aircraft being developed by the Department of Defense that had been in the works since 2072. They were one of the first soldiers to try them out.
"Yes, sir!" the three other members of his squad had bellowed out. The four members of the squad had gotten close together for the six-something years they had been serving together. The first member of the squad, besides Mark, was Lieutenant John Parker. Mark and John had been childhood friends that grew up together in Las Vegas as kids. They both attended West Point together and now had been serving together for the past six to seven years. During basic training, John was given an old M4 rifle and M1911 pistol by one of his drill instructors and had used it ever since. He was the rifleman of the squad. The second member of the squad was Staff Sergeant David Polonsky. David had come from a long line of soldiers, in fact, during World War Two, his ancestor was one of the men that stormed Shuri Castle on the island of Iwo Jima. His preferred weapon was an old AR-15 rifle with a night-vision scope fitted to fire 12.7 caliber ammunition. He was the marksman of the squad. The third and final member of the squad was Carl Bowman. He was a heavy weapon specialist. Like Polonsky, he also grew up in a military background. His ancestors had all served in some sort of government whether it be CIA, FBI, police, etc. His weapon of choice was the CZ-53 personal minigun and an M79 grenade rifle. All the members also carried 10mm N99 pistols as their sidearms.
"We're all good, LT!" Parker proceeded to tell Mark. Mark then looked at his squad one more time before telling the pilot to take off to their destination. After a few minutes, Polonsky began to ask Second Lieutenant Andrews a question.
"What are the specifics of today's mission? We never had a pre-mission briefing." Polonsky questioned.
"Well, the reason why we didn't have a pre-mission briefing is that this mission was planned just a few hours ago. Our mission today is to gather intelligence on a new type of Chinese combat robot: the Liberator. Its official name is the Liberator Mark I. We've gotten radio chatter that the Chinese plan to deploy these robots to Anchorage by the tens of thousands, armed with EMP cannons. These cannons would be able to disable our two types of power armor, both the T-45 and the T-51B model, along with all of are other combat robots and vehicles .This would completely nullify and disable our advantage on the battlefield, so this mission is of key importance. The order came down from General Chase last night," Mark explained.
The soldiers all gasped. General Chase was the Supreme Allied Commander of the war against the Chinese, so an order from him was like an order from God, if you were in the military.
"So continuing on, we should be landing in about 3 minutes, we have to secure the research and eliminate any personnel associated with the development of these reports. Are we all clear on the mission details?" Mark asked.
"Yes, sir!" They responded in unison.
"Good, good." He commented, as he pulled a Cuban cigar and began to light it. They stood in silence for the rest of the ride. About 5 minutes, the pilot got on the intercom and began to speak.
"We should be touching down in 30 seconds. Get ready." The pilot said in a calm but assertive voice. The men readied their weapons.
"Jump! Jump! Out of the chopper!" The pilot commanded. Mark and his squad all jumped out of the VTOL and immediately came under heavy fire. The VTOL promptly flew up and left the area.
"Take cover!" The second lieutenant shouted to his men. Mark surveyed the situation. About 20 Chinese soldiers were firing at their position, all carrying AK-style assault rifles, but one was carrying a Shanxi Type 17 pistol.
Polonsky was the first to notice this and shouted, "Squad, focus your fire on the guy with the handgun. He's the leader of the group!" The squad followed Polonsky's command and the officer fell dead in less than a second. That caused the dwindling group of soldiers, who had brought down to about 8 men, into a panic, causing them to turn and run. The Americans took advantage of this opportunity and gunned down the Chinese in less than a minute.
"All clear!" Mark shouted from cover, which was behind some sandbags. The rest of the squad went out of their cover and began to move forward towards the facility. Oddly, the squad found the majority of the compound empty.
"This is suspicious, why isn't there any interior resistance inside?" Parker asked Mark.
"I don't know, just keep checking your corners, Ranger." Mark responded. The squad continued through the facility, still finding no resistance. Soon, they had searched the entire facility, except for one room.
"Alright men, this is the last room, If there is any resistance, it'll be here. Be ready for anything." Mark explained to his men. The squad opened the door, and immediately four flashbangs fell at the squad's feet. With Mark and his team discombobulated, they heard the shouts of Chinese soldiers charging at them with bayonets fixed, shouting the familiar war cry of "Long live Chairman Cheng!" Mark immediately jumped into action, shouldering his rifle and drawing his N99 pistol. He dove behind a lab table for cover, and when the Chinese needed to reload, he popped up from behind cover and killed seven of them, with perfect headshots. "Take this, you commie bastards!" he shouted in rage.
His squad followed the lead of their leader and started dropping the Chinese like flies. Soon, all the Chinese were dead. "Find the intel!" he ordered his men.
"I found it Andrews! We gotta get out here! Two P-90 fighters are inbound, according to Command, and they will be here in 5! Let's get to the roof for evac!" Parker shouted. They got to the roof, but the chopper wasn't there. The squad started to panic.
"Parker, what's the ETA on evac? We gotta go! The planes will be here any…" Bowman questioned in his panic but was cut off by the sound of a Vertibird arriving.
"Get in the chopper, let's go!" the pilot of the Vertibird said, as the squad scrambled into the VTOL.
"Thank god for air support, or we'd be dead!" Mark thought to himself as the chopper took off towards the American base camp. As he looked back, he saw the planes firing missiles at the facility, destroying any trace of Mark and his squad.
