Summary

Naruto Uzumaki is a ninja born with the highest of potentials. The story is set after Sasuke Retrieval arc. It spans from a simple idea of what would have happened if Naruto returned from the training trip with more pronounced results. Will the Child of Prophecy will be able to save the world or will he bring forth its destruction?

It was a bright sunny day in the village Hidden in the Leaves and Sakura walked with a spring in her steps as she ran errands for her master. The reason she is so happy is that her teammate would finally be coming back from his training trip. Just the thought of Naruto brought a hum to her lips as she thought about her friend and teammate. They had exchanged a few letters whenever they could and she could see him becoming more mature with each letter. They never wrote anything important in case the letters were intercepted but writing to him a brought closure to her heart she didn't know she needed. While she still had feelings for the Uchiha it had calmed down; the raging tornado that was her love had calmed down to a gentle, pleasant breeze. For she finally knew she had more important things to do than chasing after a boy who ignored her on the best of days. There were some tough times coming ahead for her friend and she would stand by him no matter what.

As an assistant of Hokage's secretary, there were many things she was privy of and Akatsuki and the reason why they were after Naruto was known to her. They were a team and she would play her part in it, no matter what. Knocking against the door, she asked for permission to enter which was granted immediately. Entering, she spotted Jiraiya of the Sannin, a leaf Jonin whose face was towards Hokage and a tall blond shinobi with whisker marks who could only be Naruto.

It was a good day Naruto decided. He had finally returned to his village after three years and already got to greet Sakura-chan who was equally happy to see him. She had changed in these three years. No longer was she an insecure girl who would hide behind a mask of violence to shield her insecurities. Her outfit now consisted of a red top with the same design as the upper-half of her genin outfit. Accompanying this are black gloves, low-heel, knee-high boots, black shorts underneath a short pink apron skirt, and pink elbow protectors. The cloth of her forehead protector is changed to red and she starts carrying a medical pouch. He sensed Kakashi-sensei standing outside the window who he asked to enter too. After greeting his teammate and sensei, he looked for the scrolls where he had stored some gifts he had collected for his friends. For Sakura, he had a pair of gloves that amplified her already monstrous strength, he did the sealing work on these himself; for Kakashi-sensei he had the latest Icha-Icha book that was yet to be released in the market and for his baa-chan, he got her some sake from Mt. Myoboku. Everyone liked their gifts and appreciated them but then Tsunade clears her throat to gather the attention of everyone present.

"Thank you for the gift gaki but before you re-join the active roster we need to assess your skills and rank you. Head to the training ground seven where Jonin Hatake will assess your and Sakura's skills and recommend us a rank for you", Tsunade said.

Hatake Kakashi is one of the most dangerous foes you can encounter. With a mind as sharp as Nara, nose as good as any Inuzuka and Sharingan developed to a level most Uchiha's could only dream of, he is the best Ninja of this village except the Sannins. Of course, Naruto knew this. After seeing his sensei battle in the land of waves against Zabuza Momochi, he never doubted his sensei's prowess. He also knew that he still has ways to go before he can defeat sensei but damn him if he is going down without a fight. After reaching the training ground, he tried to center himself as he prepared himself for the fight. Finally, he could show the fruits of his labour to everyone.

Sakura was excited. At last, the opportunity has come for her to show Kakashi-sensei and Naruto that she has not been slacking off and is fully capable of stand beside them in the trials to come. Her days with Tsunade-sama had been gruelling to say the least and many a times the thoughts of quittting had come her mind only for the faces of her teammates to flash in front of her.

Kakashi was nostalgic. His students have come such a long way from the whiny brats they were, well at least two of them came. He failed one as a sensei and allowed Orochimaru to sink his fangs into him. Literally. However, Naruto was one he was especially proud of. He was the one who was most behind his peers when he Graduated but slowly and steadily, he closed the gap between them, so much so that even prodigies like Neji and Sasuke were forced to acknowledge his potential. At this moment he looked so much like his mother who had the same look in her eyes when faced with a challenge. While retaining the swirls and orange pants, his forehead protector, sandals, and jacket, are in the black colour with some orange designs on the border in the jacket, he looks much mature than the kid who wore much more orange.

"The rules are simple. All you have to do is get these bells from me. It's the same as the graduation test. You have three hours to complete the test. Start!"

Instantly, two shadow clones popped up beside Naruto who vaulted themselves towards Kakashi to engage him in a taijutsu bout. While he dispatched them quickly, he took note of their much improved co-ordination. One moment was all it took but it was enough for Sakura to cast a genjutsu that concealed them. The next moments of silence were broken by the cry of "Shannaroo!" and then ground under him split apart into a thousand pieces. Only his quick reflexes saved him from being buried under that rubble. Nothing surprised him more when a pair of hands caught his feet the moment he landed on the ground and dragged him underground till his neck. "Doton: Shinjū Zanshu no Jutsu(Earth Style: Headhunter Technique)."

Naruto was not surprised when the sensei turned out to only be a Shadow Clone. It would have actually been surprising if Kakashi-sensei had not made a clone under the cover of the dust generated by Sakura's kick. Speaking of kicks, he is not going to piss Sakura off…never. After that initial exchange, they were using hit and run tactics for about an hour where one opponent would try to trap the other. As he thought earlier, Kakashi -sensei was indeed a tough nut to crack and he absolutely justified his S-rank.

Three years ago when he gave them the same test, he was disappointed in them. The smartest girl of the batch who also boasted the best chakra control could not detect a basic genjutsu, an emo with duck-butt hair with psychological issues who tends to look down on everyone and a loudmouth who could not back up his claims. He could not say for Sasuke but he was proud of the other two. Sensei's son had already shown him two nature manipulations that were not Wind Nature. Channeling Earth chakra to strengthen one's strikes requires a mastery over the chakra manipulation and large reserves. He proved himself in both. That was impressive. Sakura had turned her biggest weakness, her low chakra pool into her biggest strength. Done with testing the waters, he stood in the clearing and called out "Maah mah…If we are done with the warm-up let's get started."

No sooner did he say those words; Naruto came barreling towards him in a speed that was too fast for him to be comfortable with if he was not using Sharingan. However, it was nonetheless dangerous because he can't block now in taijutsu exchange with his students. Ducking under a right hook, he kicked Naruto to the other side of the clearing. Righting himself mid-air, Naruto created a shadow clone after which both went through the hand-signs "Fūton: Diatoppa no Jutsu (Wind Style: Great Breakthrough Technique)" "Katon: Gōryūka no Jutsu (Fire Release: Great Dragon Fire Technique)." The techniques combined to become one monster dragon made of fire that would have reduced him to ashes were it not for the substitution technique. In retaliation, he too went through several hand signs and called "Suiton: Suiryūdan no Jutsu(Water Style: Water Dragon Missile Technique)." The water dragon missile launched was blocked by another technique by Naruto 'Suiton: Daibakufu no Jutsu(Water Style: Giant Vortex Jutsu)'. Kakashi opens a pouch from his Jonin vest, opens the scroll inside the pouch. From the scroll, a large broadsword, as tall as a full-grown man, shaped like a butcher knife comes out. The blade itself has two cutouts, a circle close to the top and a semi-circular one nearer to the handle, the former of which is aptly fitting the sword's purpose of decapitation. It was a sword with a bloody history and is called Kubikiribōchō (Decapitating Carving Knife). Kakashi channels lightning chakra through his cleaver sword and stabs the ground, which hits Naruto, paralyzing him. When he moved towards the boy with the intention to disable him, the boy releases his own sword covered in wind chakra to block the attack. While you would not call Naruto a master swordsman by any means he does have skill in using it. They clash swords for some time, trying to judge a pattern in opponent's fighting style. As expected, Naruto's unpredictability makes it hard for him to discern a pattern and his own experience prevents Naruto of taking any advantage of a pattern he might have discovered. The match got his blood pumping but before he could make another move the sound of bells ringing halted him in his tracks. He saw Sakura jumping down beside Naruto with two bells in her hand. While he was focused in his match he was watching out for her and could always see her, a little way to the right of the spot from where came. He thought she cannot make a Shadow Clone and he his sharingan is experienced enough differentiate between a normal bunshin and the caster. He knew he had been beaten and conceded the match "Maah mah…. Seems like you both won fair and square this time. Looks like I underestimated you Sakura; I did not know you were proficient with Shadow Clones!"

"Thank you sensei but you were correct in your estimate. That shadow clone was Naruto's, not mine who henged into me", replied Sakura. "But my sharingan can detect a henge." "While you are correct sensei, my henge is an actual transformation not an illusion like henges usually are. Remember how I henged into a windmill shuriken when fighting Zabuza, when I started studying, I learnt that henge is just an illusion and that was not the case with me. After telling Jiraiya sensei, we theorized that it is an actual transformation and looks like we are correct." It was at that point Jiraiya, Yamato and Tsunade along with Shizune, who joined the Sannins in the middle of the match, joined them.

After congratulating each of them the spectators turned towards the examiner and asked him to accompany them to the Hokage tower. Tsunade and Jiraiya freed their pupils for the rest of the day and told them to report tomorrow morning. While the walk towards the Hokage tower was silent when they reached the office, Tsunade commanded, "What is your assessment Kakashi?" "Well, both Naruto and Sakura have changed for the better these past three years. While sometimes still reckless and impatient he has toned them down immensely. His basics are firm, his repertoire of jutsus is impressive and I can think of only a few names in this village who can beat him in taijutsu. While not perfect, it seems that his chakra control is much better judging by the speed of formation of his one-handed Rasengan and how quickly he could break through my genjutsus. His growth has simply been phenomenal and I recommend genin Uzumaki for the rank of Special Jonin. Sakura, while not on Naruto's scale has also grown immesely. She took to your teachings like a fish takes to water. Her genjutsus are deadly and her ability to see through it surpasses even Kurenai's. How advanced she is in terms of medical knowledge I cannot say but she is the best of her generation that much I can say confidently. I recommend her for the promotion for Special Jonin."

"Hmm... How strong is Naruto, Jiraiya?", asked Tsunade.

"Aside from what you saw not by much I would say. We were not proficient with lightning enough to teach him so that's the only nature transformation that he doesn't know. He was hoping to learn lightning release from you Kakashi. Apart from Ninjutsu, his real skills lie in fuuinjutsu I would say. His unpredictability and outside the box thinking really helps him in this field. I would rank him a master in that field but he has just now started to work on Hiraishin so it would take him some time to crack that thing down. He has done something I never would have dreamt of completing though. He completed the Rasengan and could add all the four transformations he learnt on the base form. After seeing the results, I took the authority to label them S-rank forbidden techniques. If not for healing toads, we would have to come back to Konoha to heal the damage done to the boy. Although, that training method you recommended Kakashi worked wonders for the boy. When I took him to the land of toads, the boy managed to learn Sage Mode from Maa and Paa in under a month where I have dedicated my whole life and still hasn't perfected it. He has already surpassed me in the art of Senjutsu."

"Then why don't you and Yamato recommend the boy for Jonin position?", asked Tsunade.

"It's because he lacks the experience of leading a team. The occasional missions he did were solo and does not know how to command a team. That comes with experience", this time Yamato answered.

"Very well! I have decided on the future of team seven. Kakashi, Yamato report tomorrow alongside Naruto and Sakura. Both of you are dismissed!"

After the Jonins left, Shizune seeing her cue to leave also left alongside them to run some errands leaving the Sannins no company but themselves.

"Do you remember the discussion we had when you asked for this training trip?"

"Couldn't forget it even if I wanted to."

Flashback starts.

"Looking beautiful as ever Tsunade" called Jiraiya while ducking a paperweight that would have placed him on the bed beside Naruto in the hospital room, had it hit. Looking up with a grim expression he decides to cut to the chase "Tsunade, I need your help to convince Naruto to forget about the Uchiha boy. Being betrayed by Orochimaru, we both know what he is going through. Being the boy he is, he will try his utmost to bring the Uchiha boy back. I cannot stand by and do nothing when he goes through the pains he would face trying to bring him back. I also believe that with Akatsuki delaying its operations, I need to train Naruto to face when they resurface."

"You as well as I know that you would have an easier time with convincing Orochimaru to give the Uchiha boy back than Naruto to give up on someone he thinks of as family. You will lose respect he has for you as well in the process by telling him to abandon someone he thinks a comrade. Our best bet is to get him focused on Akatsuki and then open him up to this matter while on a later date. About the training trip, I will not sanction it until you tell what all you plan to train him in."

"We have to train him to be as strong as possible in the short time available. That is why I plan to strengthen his basics and teach him to use Kyuubi's chakra so at the very least he has a chance against them. If Naruto learns to harness this power he will be unstoppable, that I believe. If we will have some time I will teach him about Nature Manipulation but that's all."

"If that is the case then I will not sanction this trip! Akatsuki is a group who plans to capture bijju. They would have made some techniques for capturing them even if the jinchurikis prove too strong. I don't want you to make him a ninja who relies on his jinchuriki powers when the going gets tough. You will make him the shinobi he is meant to be and I don't know how you do it. All is want is the results! Tenzo! You will go with Naruto and Jiraiya to watch after the Kyuubi and contain him if he tries to break his seal. I do believe it is important for him to be trained in using that chakra but that is not all he will learn. You will watch over Naruto and will be his instructor when Jiraiya is not around. It will be an A – rank long term mission."

The Anbu who seemingly came out of nowhere disappeared when the orders for him were completed. "Okay, I think it's a reasonable compromise so I agree to. However, in return, I demand that he is told about the legacy he inherited from his parents. It has been long enough that he has gone without any knowledge of his parents. He has a right to know about them."

Tsunade considered the idea. She too wanted him to know about her parents. After all, every was a cousin to a Senju and Kushina was no different. But was Naruto mature enough to understand the situation? Would he resent his parents for giving him such a burden the day he was born or would he understand that they had no choice? Finally, she said, "Okay! You do raise a good point. The knowledge about his parents is long due to him but I will tell him after seeing his progress from the training trip!"

Flashback ends

"So what do think Tsunade? Is he ready?"

"Oh absolutely! However, there is something else I would like to ask you. I…. I had my doubts earlier but whenever I see Naruto; he always looks like Nawaki more and more with each passing day. When he was a kid I didn't give it much thought since many kids have a few physical features in common but since he has returned from the training trip, every time I look at him, all I can see is Nawaki's face. I don't have any explanation for this but I also can't let it be."

"So you noticed it too hmm. Truth be told I am also have been suspecting the same thing but didn't want to say anything, leaving it at the coincidence. You could try having him open a seal which only a Senju can open. If what we are thinking is true, then the seal will open."

Elsewhere in the village, at the same time two ninjas were walking down a street since it is only evening they decided to check up on the rest of Konoha 11. Team Guy was away on a mission and they had just met Team 8 departing for a mission few streets away. Naruto was currently telling how they had been looking for Zabuza's sword during the trip and found it in the possessions of thug lord. After kicking the Mafia's ass, they decided to send the sword back to Konoha for Hokage to do as she sees fit. Sakura told him since Kakashi-sensei was the one who defeated Zabuza in combat, there is no person more deserving of the weapon. "So how did you get so strong so quickly Naruto?"

"Do you remember when I discovered that whatever Shadow Clones learn I also learn during my Hospital stay? Pervy-sage told me that when I confirmed this side-effect with Kakashi-sensei he got the idea of training my theory and chakra control stuff with clones and rest by myself. I had to limit the clones to 10 to 50 depending on the stuff I would be learning at the time to avoid backlash; but still it was an amazing method dattebayo! By the way, I have something really important to tell you." Naruto told her with a nervous expression on his face.

"Is it about the furry little problem sealed inside you? If it is then I already know about that. I am Hokage's apprentice after all. There isn't much that I don't know when it comes to secrets. You know, I never got to thank you for recommending Genjustu to me."

Before they could continue their discussion they spotted Shikamaru and Temari. He waved them over and greeted both of them.

"Hey, Temari! I hope you are doing fine! Give Gaara my congratulations on my behalf, will you? I knew he could do it and I will be catching up to him soon dattebayo! One day, I would like to have a drink with him as Kages of our villages. By the way, are you two on a date or something?"

After a resounding 'No!' from both of them, Naruto learnt about the upcoming Chunin Exams. He wondered if he would need to participate in one or he will be granted a field promotion.

Nevertheless, he bid them farewell and they decided to end the outing with a trip to Ichiraku Ramen. It was there that Naruto asks Sakura a question she didn't expect but should have expected. "While that was not what I intended to ask you there before, it was appreciated nonetheless. Sakura this might be the last time I ever ask you because if you refuse me this time, I will never ask this question again. Sakura Haruno, will you go out with me?"

Sakura's initial response was a firm 'no' but she contained that response and thought hard about the question. She never told anyone but she liked it whenever Naruto would ask her on a date. It has provided strength to her on the days where she and Ino were enemies at best and Sasuke only response was to ignore her. The thought that someone wanted to date her even with her big and ugly forehead was a comforting thought; even if was the village pariah. However, she didn't have that kind of feelings for him and to lead him on with false promises was not something she would do to her friend. Besides, it's not like she deserves him after treating him like that.

Snapping back to reality, she saw such a hopeful expression on his face that it broke her heart. She wanted to say many things, tell him she doesn't deserve him but all she could say was a pitiful, "Sorry Naruto."

Instead of snapping or getting angry at her, all he did was smile sadly and tell her, "It's Okay". She knew that he would understand but it still hurt her that she was the cause of his grief. They spent the rest of the evening helping Naruto settle back in his apartment.

Next morning, former Team seven members and Yamato reported to the Hokage as instructed. After reporting to Hokage, they waited for her to begin.

"Congratulations Sakura Haruno and Naruto Uzumaki. You both exceeded our expectations during the test. On this note, I Tsunade of the clan Senju, by the powers vested in me as the fifth Hokage, do hereby promote Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno as Tokubetsu Jonin of the village. I hereby reinstate Team 7 with Hatake Kakashi as its Captain having command on Yamato, Sakura Haruno and Naruto Uzumaki."

Both Naruto and Sakura jumped in joy at the news. Save for Neji, they were the highest-ranked shinobi of their generation and were proud of that fact. After they were congratulated by the seniors present in the room, Tsunade continued, "Team Seven will be an immediate response team needed in the situations where a team immediately needs to be dispatched for backup missions or emergency missions. You will be needed to prepare for swift and immediate departures so keep a bag ready at all times. Dismissed! All but Naruto."

When it was no one but Naruto left, Jiraiya blended out of the shadow on the wall and Tsunade spoke "Naruto dear, it is important that you listen to all I have to say before you say something. Jiraiya and I are of the opinion that it is high time that you learn the identity of your parents."

Learning that your mother had held Kyuubi inside herself like him had been a hard blow. Learning that your idol was also your father had been a bigger blow. He did not even whether he should be happy or not. It took all of his training from Yamato-sensei to not blow up his top. He did as he was asked however and learned that they truly had no choice. All investigations Sandaime conducted pointed to one fact. A bastard who was after the fox was also behind the attack. Based on the sharingan eyes reflected in Kyuubi, all they could conclude was that it was an Uchiha who did it. While their home was destroyed in that Kyuubi attack his parents did leave a substantial amount of money in his name which was untouched in the last fifteen years. His sensei also turned out to be his Godfather who had to leave so as to prevent another war from breaking out. He was shunned, feared and hated by the very village his parents gave not only theirs but his life too to protect only because of the delusions of a mad man. After he recovered from the revelation of his parentage, Tsunade asked him to open a box containing a seal. The box appeared to be made of mahogany and carried a symbol he identified as the symbol of the Senju Clan. On the front most part of the box, there was a seal with kanji for 'Lock'. Shrugging, he channeled chakra through the seal hearing the telltale sound of a lock opening. While the box contained some scrolls, at the moment they held no importance as the implications of lock opening hit everyone in the office. He had Senju blood. Enough to be considered a part of the clan. His mother was an Uzumaki and while members of both clans called each other cousin, his mother did not have any Senju blood in her veins. It was Yondaime's blood that made him a Senju. He was related to four of the five Hokages. Never in his life did he believe that he is a part of a clan. Uzumaki clan was distinctly made of red-haired people. He always thought he was given the name Uzumaki since they were famous for their distinct red hairs and wasn't an actual part of the clan. He looked up into the eyes of his baa-chan and wondered "Looks like you really are my baa-chan dattebayo." "Sh-Shut up gaki" replied Tsunade before tearing down and embracing him that knocked the air out of him.

After breaking they were startled by Jiraiya's voice since they forgot all about him. "Congratulations Gaki! We don't know how you are a part of the Senju Clan but we will find out. That I can promise you. Do you want to announce your heritage and take up the Senju name? Or do you wish to keep this information on the need to know basis?"

"I think it will be for best if we keep it on the need to know basis. I want people to acknowledge me as Hokage level Shinobi based on my merits not because of who gave me birth or which clan I come from. With the threat of Akatsuki hanging, if we announce my parentage the tensions between the villages will increase. It can lead up to another great war. Wars have been started for smaller reasons after all. We need to be united in the face of the coming threat. While my team deserves to know and I will not hide it from them but I fail to see anyone else who also needs to know about this."

"As you wish gaki. Take the rest of the day off. You deserve it and just so you know, you are welcome to visit the Clan compound whenever you wish to. If we have to keep this on the need to know basis, then I do not think shifting to the compound would be a good idea" agreed Tsunade.

Taking his leave, Naruto bought three bouquets of red roses fom the Yamanaka Flower Shop. Thankfully, Ino was not at the shop this time. He was not in the mood of meeting the gossip queen. Silently making his way towards Konoha Crematory, Naruto pondered upon the changes since he returned to the village. Not only did he got a double promotion, his team was also re-instated albeit without Sasuke, he learnt he was part of the Senju Clan and finally, he finally knew who his parents were. So engrossed was he in his thoughts that only when he breached jii-chan's grave did he snapped back to reality. "Sorry, Jii-chan it took me so long for me to revisit you. It was yesterday only that I came back from my training trip. I am closer to my goal of becoming Hokage now more than ever dattebayo! I was promoted to the rank of Special Jonin and can only hope that I am promoted to full Jonin soon enough. These three years have been amazing but brutal. Do you know that your student is one hard taskmaster? He drove me into the ground so many times that sometimes I felt he took pleasure in it. However, he also taught me a lot. I will always be thankful to him for that. Without Yamato-sensei I never would have matured this much. He is one scary dude when he wants to be. However, the results say for themselves. When I left this village, I was a brat who constantly bragged with no skill to back it up. My techniques were flawed and I couldn't throw a shuriken straight. Now I finally understand what it means to be a shinobi and I hopefully have some skills to back up my boasts. I promise you that I will make you proud by becoming Hokage jii-chan. I just wish that you would be here with me to support me all the way to the top. I will never forgive Orochimaru for what he did. That man not only attacked my village and killed you but also turned my best friend against the village. I could finally understand how Sasuke felt when you died but that doesn't mean that I would become Itachi's student in my quest for vengeance. I miss you Jii-chan…." He sat by Sandaime's grave telling him about his training and everything and anything under the sun. Later bidding him farewell, Naruto started searching for his parent's gravestone. It was then that he stumbled upon Kakashi-sensei paying respects to a grave with the name of Rin Nohara. It was a surprise to see the smartass Kakashi-sensei with such a sadness emanating from him. He stood beside his sensei and placed a hand on his shoulder in what he hoped to be a comforting gesture. Since he stood at 170 cms, he hoped it wasn't too awkward. They stood in silence for some time after which Kakashi gave him a nod of thanks. Together they made their way towards the resting place of the couple that saved the village from being reduced to rubble.

Kakashi had guessed that Sannins intended to tell them about his parents when they dismissed everyone but Naruto and he was proud of him for not succumbing to anger. He shared tales of his team, sensei and his mother with Naruto. He told Naruto how happy they were when they learnt of your birth. It was the first time he talked to someone about his team since Rin's death willingly and he realized that he felt better than ever. He told Naruto that they would be very proud of him and they believed in his dream.

A week has passed since the day they were re-instated and things were going good. Naruto had changed his attire to his signature orange pants with a black t-shirt, underneath which he wore a mesh armour. His uniform was completed by the Jonin vest given by the Hokage. Naruto tried to visit the Senju Compound as much as he could manage. Its library was full of treasure trove of knowledge that would help him in the fight against Akatsuki. Naruto also managed to convince Kakashi to teach him the Lightning Release. He was still at the basics but he was making steady progress. It won't be long before he masters it with other releases. After that, he could start working on a theory he had with Kekkai Genkai. He made sure to practice his sage mode every day; for nothing but practice can perfect it. The team met every day to generate cohesion between its members and to practice formations. The team was making steady progress. Both Kakashi and Yamato were one of the best shinobi that the leaf village had to offer and Sakura and Naruto were set to surpass their masters one day.
