Tada! Chapter one! It's short since it's all I could come up with.
Chapter 1
The beginning of something weird
Edd still wasn't able to understand how things had gone the way they did. Why did his parents get a divorce? And how did his father manage to find someone else to marry so soon after the divorce was through? It's almost as if he met the woman beforehand and planned the whole divorce thing, but that doesn't make any sense! His parents loved each other, didn't they? They did, right? So why… just why did this happen, and why so sudden? And why was it over and done so soon after it started? He doesn't know, just like the rest of the kids in the cul-de-sac, who had all been pretty surprised by the D-word when they heard about it.
And then there's the whole situation with the woman that his father married. From what Edd understands, she was also married but left her husband and now she is marrying his father. Where's the logic in that? Why did she divorce her husband and why is she marrying his father? Do they love each other? But… they already had a spouse to love, didn't they? But that's not even the biggest factor about this woman – his "new mother", as his father had tried to put it. No, no; she has a daughter from her other marriage, and brought the said daughter to their home to live with them. Normally, that wouldn't be such a problem, as Edd has always wanted a sibling… a younger sibling, that is. And that's where the problem is; this girl is 16 years old. Given what happened between Eddy and his brother – in front of everyone in the cul-de-sac, including the Kankers – that is a very bad thing to happen to anyone! And why did that have to happen to poor little sweet Double-D?!
Now, to be fair, Edd was always raised to give people the benefit of the doubt, so when he heard that he was getting a big sister – as his father always tells him to see her – he decided to hope for the best and do what he could to be a good little brother. After all; just because one older sibling is horrible and likes to torture their younger sibling doesn't mean that every older sibling is like that, right? Right?! That's what he thought… or rather hoped, up until he saw her. Starting from her feet and up; she was wearing black boots, reaching to just underneath her knees, over a black pair of jeans. She was wearing a leather jacket over a long red plaid shirt that was unbuttoned and reached the back of her thighs in length with a black tank top underneath. A thick line of eyeliner covered both the top and base of her eyelids and made her eyes appear more catlike and other than that the only makeup she was wearing was mascara. Her hair reaches her shoulder blades and is quite wavy, slightly curly at the ends, light copper which matches her bright hazel eyes. All in all, she's quite pretty… in a terrifying way.
The moment they met was when she and her mother, his "new mother", came by to get their stuff ready for them to move in. Edd's father had called him in from the backyard, where he had been planning scams with Eddy and Ed – who also got to meet her. The three boys entered the living room, exited yet nervous about whom this brand new sister could be and what she would be like. Ever since Eddy heard about Double-D getting a sister he had gone on and on how she could be a great help for their future scams, where as Ed had been so scared he hid under his bed for days, eventually leading to his parents having to drag him out from hiding. Once they saw her, the three boys froze in their steps, looking at her with big fearful eyes while she looked back at them with a raised eyebrow. She had immediately turned to Edd's father with a questioning glare.
"I thought you said you only had one kid." Her voice was deeper than any of the other girls' in the cul-de-sac, but she was also older than any of them. Either way, her voice caused the three very frightened boys to jump, drawing her attention back towards them.
"Why, yes. My son is Eddward." Edd's father had answered, looking over to his son with a serious look. "Son, come over here and say hello to your new mother and sister."
Forcing his shaking legs to move, he eventually made it across the living room floor to stand in front of the two women of two different ages. Where the older one – his "new mother" – smiled big and widely at him, the younger one – his "sister" – focused most of her attention to glaring angrily at her mother who was currently standing next to her. Whenever she wasn't glaring at her mother she was looking at Edd, with a much more calm expression, though still not a friendly one.
"Hello there sweetie!" His new mother had said with a happy voice. "I'm Heather, your new mom, and this is-"
"Mel." The girl interrupted, casting her mother another angry glare.
"Melanie." Her mother continued, not caring about the death glare her daughter was giving her as she pulled Edd into a hug. "It's so good to finally get to meet you!"
"L-likewise!" Edd stammered as he tried to pry himself from the hug. The woman eventually let him go and joined his father to take care of some things that needed their attention, leaving the girl alone with the three boys. "U-uhhm…" Gulping loudly, Edd clearly had no idea what to do or say when suddenly a hand was presented in front of him. Looking up to meet hazel eyes, he blinked a few times without saying anything.
"Well, are you gonna take it?" Mel asked. "It's rude to leave someone hanging."
"A-ah! Of course!" He said and taking the hand with his and allowing her to shake it, like a proper handshake.
"Right. So you're Edd. Then who are those two?" She had said while pointing her head in their direction.
"Oh, th-they're my f-f-friends!" Edd stammered while trying to introduce his friends. "Eddy and Ed."
"Okay… so, who's who?"
At this moment, Eddy began making his way up towards her, trying to play it cool before grabbing her hand in a "firm" handshake. "Hi there! I'm Eddy and the monobrow over there is Ed." He said while pointing back at Ed, who was obviously still terrified of her, as he stood there shaking like a leaf.
"E-Ed?" Double-D had asked, trying to get his friend to snap out of it so that he would introduce himself. That did not go as planned.
"THE EVIL SISTER IS GONNA EAT US ALL!" He cried out and picked up Eddy and Edd before rushing out the front door, leaving said sister behind.
While running around the cul-de-sac in pure panic, Ed kept calling out from the top of his lunges about the "evil sister" and how she was going to eat everyone like the monsters in some random movie he'd seen. The commotion was enough to drag the attention from everyone in the cul-de-sac, all the kids rushing towards them to hear every bad thing that Ed had to say about the "evil sister", taking it all to heart and thus beginning to fear her – even more so when they looked back at Double-D's house, only to find her standing just outside the front door, watching everything from afar. Her glare was enough to make Jimmy cry out in fear and run for his life with Sarah right on his tail. Johnny shouted something about how Plank saying she was just as evil as Eddy's brother and bolted right out of there to his home. Rolf panicked as well, swearing by some ancient goddess that she was the source of great misfortune and that the future was an unstable one as long as she remained there. That left Kevin and Nazz standing there in the middle of the road, looking at everyone panic and run around like crazy hens. Their eyes eventually landed on her, sending chills down their spines and they tried to act casual while still fleeing for their lives, seeking safety in their respective homes. Everyone had fled for their lives, leaving the girl to stand alone outside the front door to her brand new home. She eventually returned indoors, closing the door rather harshly behind her.
Poor little Double-D was the only one in the cul-de-sac who had to return outside again in order to go home. Home… where the danger where. Eddy and Ed had forced him to agree on spending the night, a desperate tactic to keep their friend safe from the dangerous woman. Though he thought a sleepover wouldn't be such a bad idea, he did still refuse to not brush his teeth and to sleep without his pajamas… which is why he is currently sneaking across the cul-de-sac, to try and get home safely so that he can leave as soon as possible again, without getting detected by… her.
He made it inside via the backdoor, and tried to be as quiet as possible when climbing the stairs. His father never truly cared what he was up to or even checked where he was, so he wasn't worried about having to explain his actions, where he to be caught by him while carrying sleepover material. He still remained as silent as possible, just in case he would run into her – if she didn't hear him then he would still have a chance to run and/or hide. His luck would soon turn out to not be on his side though. Making his way to his bedroom and gathering everything he needed for a sleepover, he then left his room to try and get to the restroom where his toothbrush is located, only to find himself face to face with her. Watching the door to the restroom open, he froze in the middle of a step as he sees her emerge from behind it. They locked eyes for just a moment before she noticed his gathering of sleeping materials.
"Sleepover?" She asked.
"Wh-why yes!" He stammered. "E-Eddy and Ed thought it was a g-good night for a-a m-movie night and sleepover."
"I bet they do." She scoffed and walked away from him, retreating to a room that were probably decided to be hers.
"Oh dear…" Edd whispered as he made his way to grab his toothbrush and then out of the house.
The sleepover had been an okay one. They watched some movies, but Ed would constantly tell the how the "evil sister" was going to do the same thing to them that the monster did to the characters in the story. Sometimes they laughed at the idea, but other times they feared the thought of it happening. Edd especially, since he's the one who's forced to live under the same roof as the "monster" and from the fact that she is obviously displeased in him, with how the introduction went beyond bad and that she now is feared by everyone in the cul-de-sac because of it.
Night eventually came by and everyone went to sleep. Nightmares Edd had never had before began to torment his young mind, the fear of what would happen when he returned home slowly eating him up from the inside, causing him to wake up in cold sweat and gasping for air. How could it be that one person could inflict such an amount of fear in less than one day? It almost seemed as illogical as his parents getting a divorce… and yet, just like the divorce, it happened. With that thought in his mind, he tried to go back to sleep, knowing well enough that he wouldn't be able to do anything about it if he didn't get the required amount of sleep in.
The next few weeks were spent in fear, as Edd lived in his house hiding from his sister in the hopes that she wouldn't harm him in any sort of way, like the way Eddy's brother did. He had tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, he truly had… but there was also so much he could do! Now that the facts where there and they all said that she hated him, he couldn't take the risk of being alone with her, alone with her to do whatever she pleases to do with him! And yet, his luck would turn out to have forgotten about him once again.
Waking up one morning, after everything with the two ladies moving in was finally done with, Edd would find a sticky note on the fridge, with a message on it that would cause his blood to freeze: "We'll be home next weekend. There's food in the fridge that you can preheat. Otherwise, Mel can cook something for you." Dropping the yellow square to the floor, the fear spread through him like a fire following a trail of gasoline till it found the motherload. Next weekend… He's going to be home alone with her for a week and a half?!
Sadly, that was just the beginning of poor Eddward's problems. For not only was there now an legit teenager in the house who could take care of the more "adult" chores in the house, but since their parents were working for the same company in the city, they decided that there wasn't really that necessary for them to come home that often, so they decided to sign a contract that would allow them to travel to different states and countries for the purpose of the company, such as business trips. This would of course result in their children being home alone for months in a row, at the very least, which wasn't something the girl was happy about to hear.
"Oh! So just because I'm in the house now that gives the two of you to just take off and leave your children behind! Oh, now I see! Yeah, that makes absolutely total sense! Are you for real?! Don't the two of you know that neglecting your children is downright illegal?!"
"We are not neglecting you Mel, we are simply doing our jobs for the company and teaching you how to be independent in the same time." Her mother had said to her.
"Give me a break! When are you even planning on returning home, huh?! Since none of you will be needed here anymore, why in the world would you return at all?!"
"Enough!" Edd's father had roared. "I will not tolerate such behavior in my house!"
"Should've thought about that before you married her ass!"
"Melanie!"
And with that, Mel had stormed out of the house, throwing the door open in a loud bang, gathering the attention of everyone in the cul-de-sac. Though the fear of her had calmed down some over the weeks, they still feared her to some extent – especially when she lost her temper like this and stormed away to wherever she went. They stayed clear of her path, making sure not to be in her way in any kind of way, hoping that would be enough to keep her temper away from them. It worked… but she still lost it whenever she was at home with hers and Edd's parents.
Time moved on and soon came the day where their parents left for their first three month long travel. They said their goodbyes and told them to behave and that they loved them. Words that Edd took to the heart that Mel would scoff at with as little respect as she could muster. Looking up at his sister with a questioning look, Edd tried his best to understand why his sister was so upset all of the time, and why she always erupted whenever their parents tried to talk to her. Hopefully there would be far less of that now that they were away on their trip. It did… but as it was the end of her uncontrolled anger that would erupt as soon as you said her name, another weird habit began to take form. While walking home from the candy store with Ed and Eddy, Kevin had rolled up to them on his bike and asked what the deal with Mel was.
"Whatever do you mean?" Edd asked.
"You tell me man. She's been on your roof for the past half hour."
"Oh my!"
As they hurried home they did indeed find the teenage girl sitting on top of the roof to their house, looking as bored as she could be. While Edd had been flailing his arms in the air while trying to talk her down from there, Ed and Eddy had been far too busy laughing at the whole ordeal. The only response he managed to get out of her was a roll of her eyes as she looked the other way, sitting slouchy at the roof with her head prepped in her hand and her arm resting on one of her legs. She didn't seem to be in any immediate danger, so Edd decided – against his better judgment – to leave her be. After a while she did come down, by jumping down to the front yard, causing some of the kids to yelp in fear of her hurting herself. She didn't react to any of them, just simply stood up and walked away to wherever it is she goes to whenever she walks away.
"Man, your sister's weird." Eddy had said to Edd as the kids of the cul-de-sac watched her walk away, into the woods that were just outside the neighborhood, to where the creek is located.
After that they went back to whatever they were doing, though Edd couldn't shake the thought that something might be wrong with his sister… not wrong with her as in she has a few screws loose, but wrong with her in the way that there might be something that's weighing heavily on her mind, something she has to work out on her own… or something she needs to talk about? He doesn't know. All he knows is that she is acting weird, and from what he can tell… there's no reason for her weird actions. So why does she do the things that she does? Truly, this woman is a mystery to the world.
As I said: this is all I could come up with. The next chapter will be more fledged out, story wise. I just wanted to add a little more "background" I guess and character to Double-D – like how he didn't see the logic or connection between the divorce and how people can have affairs and leave their partner for someone else and all that, since he's a kid and kids don't really think about stuff like this. I never did.
Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed this little extra background piece. I will try and make an actual chapter for the next one, it's just that I was rather stuck and had to get this part out of my mind before I could move on, so yeah.
Have a good day and a good lockdown!
