The crew stood on deck wondering what had just happened, it was not like Kate to storm off, and they all were wondering what had made her react in that way and what she had said Mike.

"okay" Mike called trying to get everyone's attention and them to settle down. "we still have a ship to get home. Everyone back to their duties please. Nav you have the ship" he called walking back inside.

"i have the ship Sir" nav smiled.

Slamming the door of her cabin the anger and frustration bubbled over into tears. It wasn't the song its self but the way he had clearly rigged it so they would sing together and the song said so much about their relationship or past relationship. Hearing the door open she turned to see Mike standing in her cabin.

"Kate" he called

"why did you do this?" she asked

"done what?" mike asked confused "this was supposed to be a little bit of fun to take all our minds off everything that is happening" he said

"This. Us. I don't know how but you fixed this" she said

"how. You saw everyone pull a name out fair and square. Same with the songs. I couldn't have fixed it even if I wanted to." he said

"somehow I find that hard to believe" she scoffed

"and what's that supposed to mean?" he asked

"never mind" she folded her arms

"Kate" he said softly reaching out

"no" she pulled away. She couldn't do this. "just leave me alone please. My back is killing and I am exhausted" she said softly

"okay" he half smiled placing the piece of paper with their song on the side for her. "have a good night" he said softly as he left.

Kate sat on her rack staring at the piece of paper. Pushing it to the floor along with the files it was on she couldn't look at it without feeling the gods taunt her about everything. Falling to the floor she began to cry at everything. Several hours later She brushed away the tears furious with herself for crying and allowing her emotions to take over. Composing herself she gathered everything up placing it back on the side. She didn't want everyone talking about this and she didn't want Nav to see when she came down after her watch. Lying back on her rack she could hear Nav outside. Pulling the blanket over her head she pretended to be asleep.

"Kate?" Nav whispered as she walked in.

Lying as still as she could Kate stared at the wall, she hoped Nav would think she was asleep. She didn't want to seem rude but she couldn't handle all the inevitable questions that she would ask and it would mean having to explain

her past history with Mike. She heard Nav climb on to her rack and the curtain pull across, waiting until she was certain that the ship was silent. Before moving from her rack. Slipping out of her cabin she headed up to the galley for a brew.

Making herself a brew she rooted through the cupboard pulling out a couple of Tim-Tams before heading back down to the safety of her cabin. She managed to get back without anyone seeing her or without bumping in to him.

Checking Nav was asleep she pulled her laptop from the desk. Climbing back in to her rack she logged in to the computer before loading up YouTube. Searching for the song she clicked play. Listening to the lyrics, she didn't really want to sing let alone sing with him but she also knew she couldn't let the side down and be a spoil sport. Slowly she pulled the lid of the laptop down she placed it back on the side. They had arrived back in port a few hours ago so it was a minimal watch rolling over she tried to get some sleep knowing tomorrow would be a better day.

The following morning when she awoke Kate headed up to the bridge. She stopped as she went past Mikes cabin. Her mind felt clearer than it did last night and it was just a song. It meant nothing, she was happy with Jim and he was just a friend.

"can I have a word Sir" she smiled knocking on the

"Kate," he smiled "is everything okay?" he asked.

"Fine" she paused "do you have those lyrics" she half smiled

"so, you're going to do it then. Even although I fixed it?" he said

"well I was wrong; it's just a song and I don't want to let the side down. But I am not wearing any 80's costume normal clothes."

"noted. Were in port all day so do you want to get together and practice later?" he asked

"no. I think we will be fine, we can just do it on the night so to speak" she half smiled

"okay then..." he paused

"i best..." she indicated in to the corridor before making her retreat. It was getting awkward between them and she just wanted to get away.

Sitting in the ships office she looked over the lyrics she began to hum the tune to herself.

"Not bad X" Nav called walking in

Turning Kate sighed with relief. "way to give a girl a heart attack" she laughed as Nav sat down next to her

"Sorry" Nav grinned "but that was really good. What song is it?" she asked

Showing her the lyrics Kate sighed this was happening

"Nice" Nav grinned "this should be so much fun. I saw Spider and Buffer practicing earlier and it was so funny them trying to rap and street dance at the same time"

"yeah I am not sure about fun. Anyway how is your song coming along?" she asked

"okay apart from ET wants to do that lift at the end..."

"No. Not going to happen. I really don't want to have to do the paperwork when one or both of you end up in A&E, or have to explain to NAVCOM what and how it happened." Kate looked at her friend

"hey I don't want to do it; I know he will drop me and I will end up on my ass in front of the crew" Nav protested

"well you still outrank him. Just say he will, be cleaning the heads with a toothbrush if he tries anything" Kate grinned

"you really like that punishment don't you." Nav laughed

"well it's a classic and they all hate it"

"well. I best go find ET and give him the warning. What time did Mike say we were doing this?" she asked

"i don't know, think 19:00 in the juniors mess" she smiled

"okay, that sounds good" Nav smiled leaving Kate alone in the office

Leaning back in her seat she just wanted this to be over and done with, both; the talent show and the nightmare in Samaru. looking at her watch she knew she couldn't hide in the office forever and she would have to take her turn at being on watch. Tonight couldn't be over soon enough.
