Thank you to everyone who has read the prologue for this story. I'm going to give some insight into the first three seasons of The Originals through flashbacks. Mona has a different background to the one you might expect. Unlike Hayley, she was not a werewolf so she is not a werewolf-vampire hybrid She is a hybrid but between a vampire and another species. Members of her family will be constantly mentioned but few will make actual appearances. Of them, two will most likely be constants in my story, her cousin Jason and his wife Piper.
Gather Up The Killers
San Francisco, 2020
A young woman walked across her house, checking in all the rooms before climbing up the stairs into the attic, where four white coffins lay.
She opens up one of the coffins and it is revealed to hold a young man - no older than twenty five - with gray skin and aristocratic features, dark hair and broad shoulders. She leaned down to kiss his forehead before closing the coffin and climbing back down.
The woman climbs back down and enters what is clearly a nursery for a small child and she picks up the dark haired infant slumbering in the crib. She then enters one of the rooms in which two girls, one with dirty blonde hair and the other one with auburn hair are seen drawing. The girls smile up at their mother, but don't move from their drawings until they all hear an engine approaching the home.
The blonde girl grins at her mother, "Are they here?"
"Let me go check, okay? Stay inside." The mother warns before going downstairs and perching the now awake infant on her hip.
Opening the door to the house, she smiles at the blond man who is now walking towards the house.
"Jay, are you sure no one followed?" She feels the need to check before leaving the safety of her home.
"I taught you how to avoid a trail, Dee. Now come and give me a hug."
The woman complies, moving her son to her arms to better hug her brother in all but blood, smiling from his shoulder to the woman who is now leaving the car.
Passing her son to the man, she moves to hug the other woman.
"Did you find it?" She asks, stepping back. When she sees the look passing between them, she says, "Please. I'm so close to getting them back. Hazel finally managed to siphon Rebekah's hex and Will helped me find a cure for Freya's poison."
"Are you really going to do this, Dee? Cure them and wake them up? Did you ever stop to think the girls might be better off without them? Did you ever think about his reaction when he finds out about Alex?" He asks, nodding down at his son who is stirring in his mother's arms.
"Jason, please. I made a promise I'd bring them back."
"To who? To Klaus? Or was it to Kol?" He can't help the bitterness from creeping up in his voice.
"To my children. I promised both girls. I promised them a safe home with the people who love them. And those people include their father's family. They're Mikaelsons and they inherited all of their enemies with none of their protection. Hope and Lana inherited a power I don't understand and they need someone to teach them how to control it. I can't do this on my own and I can't ask you to help out more than you already do. You and Piper have already helped me more than I could possibly ask."
Piper moves her hand forward to grasp her arm. "Mona, you told me you needed to find all seven werewolf packs for their venom. And you found six. Apart from me and dad, you couldn't find a single Malraux. We thought they had died. But I found a lead suddenly. Just think about it," she looks up to meet her eyes. "We search and find nothing for five years and suddenly I have a lead. What if it's a trap?"
"I'll have to take the risk."
Austin, Texas
From her spot in the bar, Mona can see the werewolf enjoying herself with her friends, obviously celebrating something. Once she sees her start to move towards the bar, she signals for the bartender to bring her another drink.
"You look like you're having fun. What's the occasion?"
"I just finished my residency, which makes me an official doctor," the werewolf grins, unaware of what's coming.
"Does it help with the guilt? You know, considering what you are," Mona decides to be blunt and to the point, startling the werewolf and causing her to swivel her head around to look at her.
"What the hell did you just say to me?"
"Keelin, you need to listen to me," Mona softens her voice, trying a different approach.
"How do you know my name?"
"Got it from a friend. She also said that your grandmother's maiden name was Malraux and that she got her last name from your great grandma Baba."
Keelin looks shocked at that piece of information, but she repeats her earlier question. "How do you know that?"
"We can't talk here. Five minutes. Outside. I need a favor."
A blond man by the name of Alastair Duquene is leaving a party in New Orleans when his phone flashes with a message. "We found the girl. And Desdemona Dane."
He quickly types up a response. "Kill them both."
Mona had been waiting for five minutes before the she-wolf showed in the alley behind the bar. Obviously, she underestimated Mona because she immediately elbowed her in the face and tried to run. But much to her frustration within seconds Mona was in front of her, hands on her hips.
"Will you stop that? I'm not here to fight you." Mona breathed in deeply. "I need you and I need you alive. You're the last triggered wolf of your pack. That makes you special for so many reasons I can't explain them."
"I don't care about your problems. I have a life and I'm not going to leave it behind."
"I'm not saying you should, but it's as good an idea as any," Mona stops talking and brushed back her hair, hearing a commotion inside the bar. "We don't have time for this," with that, she moves forward, knocking Keelin unconscious as she does so before speeding away.
Mona moved herself away from the coffins when she heard the werewolf's breathing become ragged as she woke up and remembered what had happened to land her in the warehouse. Mona knocking her out and then she woke up in that same warehouse only to be knocked out again by the machine that sucked her venom out of her. Mona looked at her in sympathy for a moment, in her opinion no one should have to be dragged into the war of the Mikaelsons, but her enhanced hearing easily picked up on the door being opened and vampires entering which meant she had to hurry.
"Good, you're up. Now, I need you to do something for me," Mona said quickly, grabbing the syringe as she untied the wolf. "I need you to wake her with this," she said, pointing at Freya's coffin.
New Orleans, August 2011
Mona followed Klaus and Elijah into an old cemetery.
"Well, this is creepy." Mona told them and clung onto Klaus's arm. Truly, she wasn't scared but she wanted to lighten the mood.
"What are we doing here?" Klaus asked.
"You want to know what the witches have in store for you. Follow me." Elijah responded.
They walked into a tomb where Sophie was waiting for them.
"Sophie Deveraux. What is this?" Klaus asked.
"He's all yours. Proceed." Elijah said to Sophie and keeping Mona behind with him.
"You know you're famous in this town? Witches tell bedtime stories about the powerful vampire Klaus. We know Marcel was nothing but an orphan street rat until you made him what he is and now he's out of control. He does what he wants, kills whom he wants. I'm gonna stop him and you're gonna help me." Sophie said to Klaus. Mona wanted to scoff at the absurdity of the statement.
"This is why you brought me here?" Klaus asked Elijah.
"Hear her out brother."
"I don't need to hear her out. I assure you there's nothing on this earth matter enough for me to waste even 30 more seconds of my time. Elijah what madness is this?" More witches came to view.
"You need to listen to us." Sophie said.
"Marcel may be able to prevent us from practice real magic in this town but as keepers of the balance we still know when nature has cooked up something new." Sophie looked at Mona with pity in her eyes.
"For example, I have a special gift of sensing when a girl is pregnant."
Everyone turned to look at Mona.
"What?" Klaus said, his eyes narrowing when he looked at his girlfriend.
"Sensing when a girl is what?" Mona asked walking forward, as a girl came out of the shadows, escorted by two witches.
"What are you saying?" Klaus asked.
"Niklaus. the girl is carrying your child." Elijah said looking at the both of them before turning his head to gesture at the girl.
"What?" Mona exclaimed, leaving her spot at Klaus's embrace and looking at him with hurt in her eyes.
"No. It's not possible." Klaus said. "Vampires can't procreate."
"But werewolves can. Magic made you a vampire but you were born a werewolf. You're the original hybrid, the first of your kind and this pregnancy is one of nature's loopholes." Sophie said.
Klaus looked over at Hayley.
"You've been with someone else. Admit it!" He screamed at her, ignoring Mona for the moment.
"I have spent the past few days trapped in the bayou with witches chanting left and right. Don't you think I would've fessed up if it wasn't yours?" Hayley all but yelled at him.
"My sister gave her life to perform this spell she needed to confirm this pregnancy. Because of Jane-Anne's sacrifice, the lives of this girl and her baby are now controlled by us. If you don't help us take down Marcel, so help me. Hayley won't live long enough to see her first maternity dress." Sophie said, and that was the last Mona heard before she ran out of the cemetery.
Mona was severely outnumbered, but she had faced worse odds before. She gave one last cry as she smirked at one of the remaining vampires before letting out a burst of power, managing to kill them before collapsing. She would've probably been out cold if it wasn't because she was caught by a pair of strong arms. She looked up and found herself staring into the eyes of the youngest male original.
She hungrily took his offered wrist, only taking enough blood to heal herself without weakening him too much before trying to separate herself from him, but his hold on her was too strong.
Kol seemed to be awestruck. "You did it."
"I promised I would heal you all," Mona laughed softly.
