Prologue
Owlshadow glanced up at the sky. Tonight was the night that he would receive his nine lives and his name. Rosetip was beside him. The old medicine cat was there with him, both because this was the half-moon and because it was tradition for a medicine cat to be there for a nine lives ceremony. Owlshadow thought that it was time that Rosetip take on an apprentice. The she-cat was getting old, and a new litter of kits had been born to Flamepelt and Gingerheart 3 moons ago. Redkit seemed like a good candidate for medicine cat. Sunkit too. "We are here." Rosetip's voice jolted Owlshadow our of his musings. "It is time." Before them stood the Star Crystal, the large stone that kept MeadowClan in touch with StarClan, the Clan's ancestors. "I can't believe that Saberstar is dead. He was such a good leader," said Owlshadow as he looked a the Star Crystal. Rosetip dipped her head sadly. "He was leader for many seasons. He lead us though some of MeadowClan's hardest times. I -and many others- will mourn his death for seasons." For a moment, no cat spoke. Then Owlshadow stepped forward. "Let's continue with the ceremony. I assume we touch the Crystal with our noses?" Rosetip nodded and crouched down, pressing her nose to the stone. Owlshadow followed her lead, and as soon as he touched the Star Crystal, he was filled with searing cold. When he opened his eyes again, he was in a sunny, but somehow dim, meadow. Cats were gathered around him. Owlshadow had never been to StarClan before. A pure black tom stepped forward. Owlshadow's eyes widened. "Blackberry!" Blackberry tipped his head in greeting. "Hello, Owlshadow. I am proud to see you here, about to receive your nine lives. I am only sad that I did not get to witness your deputy ceremony. I miss you very much, my son."
"As do I."
"Then let's do this." Blackberry smiled. "I give this life for sacrifice, for that in your time, you may serve your Clan with honor." The tom touched his nose to Owlshadow's and a wave a searing pain wormed under Owlshadow's light brown pelt. A white cat paced to his side, until the pain left him. "I give you this life of protection, so that you may protect your Clan like a mother protects her kits." Another wave of pain sweep though Owlshadow, but with a fierce feeling of protection for everyone he loved. The white she-cat stepped away from him, and he looked up at her. "Thank you, Snowmist," he said weakly. Again and again, Owlshadow felt pain sweep though him, until only one cat was left. He had a dark brown pelt with two white slashes on his chest. Owlshadow's eyes widened again. "Saberstar!"
Saberstar smiled. "Hello, my deputy. I am confident that you will lead your Clan for many moons to come. So I give you your final life: A life for courage, to lead your Clan though hard times and though to your death as well." Saberstar touched noses with Owlshadow and one last feeling of pain wove though him. When he opened his eyes, he was next to Rosetip on the cliff top. The she-cat raised her head to look at Owlshadow- no, Owlstar. "Welcome to seasons of leadership, Owlstar."
