The Truth Behind the Light

Chapter 2

Recap: "Why don't we attempt to talk to them on the platform tomorrow? If anything, he might be placed in your house." Narcissa stated, attempting to get him to look on the brighter side of things. Severus could only nod, his mind wandering to the possibilities that tomorrow would bring.

Continuation: Zia and Harry were silent as they slipped out of their Uncle Vernon's car, watching as he left them standing at the train station entrance. Harry sighed before he placed his hand on her shoulder turning to push his trolley towards the platform.

"So…Professor Severus said that to get onto Platform 9 ¾ we have to run into the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10." He mumbled as they walked through the train station. Zia glanced around noticing no one seemed to notice them pushing the two trolleys with Harry's owl sitting in her cage on top of his trunk. She glanced around, searching for any signs of any other possibly wizards but figured most had different ways to get onto the platform.

"Platform 9 and ¾ is this way!" a voice suddenly yelled, catching their attentions. Harry quickly turned around just enough to spot a short red headed woman with what looked like 5 children and her husband. Zia raised an eyebrow, remembering slightly what Professor Snape had said about the laws of secrecy while they lived among the muggle world. The twins stood back watching as the seven wizards disappeared through the enchanted barrier.

"Together?" Zia questioned, glancing at her brother. Harry quickly nodded, taking his sister's hand, squeezing it for a moment before he grabbed his trolley. The twins took a small running start before they ran towards the barrier. Harry closed his eyes tight for a moment, half expecting to collide with solid brick. He relaxed once they had made it through the barrier, standing with a look of amazement at how crowded the platform was. He slowly turned taking in everyone, noticing some stood dressed in normal clothes while most stood dressed in robes, some fancier than the last. He remembered Professor Snape explaining the terms Half-blood, Muggleborn and Pureblood along with what that normally entitled. Most Purebloods had been around Britain for many centuries and had accumulated great wealth.

"You look a little lost." A female's voice stated to their left. Zia glanced over noticing a woman dressed in emerald green robes that looked like they were lined with silver designs. Her hair was blonde and black and fell down to her midback, her silver eyes sparkling as she watched the twins interact with each other. Harry noticed the boy from the Robe shop standing off to the side with who he guessed with his father.

"I'm Narcissa Malfoy and you seem to have already met my son." She introduced herself with a kind smile. Narcissa couldn't help but clasp her hands together tight to keep herself from hugging the nephew she had thought she'd lost. She looked him over, attempting to see any clear signs of Severus or Bella in him. She raised her hand to cover her mouth as she attempted to hold in a laugh when Harry scrunched up his nose much like Severus usually did when he was frustrated about something. She glanced over at Lucius and noticed he was watching them with interest.

"Just a little lost ma'am. We were trying to figure out how to get our trunks and Hedwig's cage onto the train since…we don't have anyone to help us with magic like the other students." Zia explained, resting her hand against her brother's arm. Harry glanced down at her for a moment before he turned his attention back to the family of three standing in front of them.

"Why don't you allow me to help you?" Narcissa offered, pulling out her wand to perform a levitation spell. Draco chuckled at the amazed look on Harry's face as she moved his trunk over to the train to be loaded by one of the older students. Zia glanced at the woman with an unsure look on her face just as she felt a hand on her shoulder. She quickly looked up, seeing the woman that had been talking about the platform in the muggle station.

"Narcissa I'm sure the twins would like to sit with the Gryffindors in the other train cars. I can have my twins move them." The woman suggested though both of the twins noticed the disgusted look on her face as she looked at the Malfoy family. She looked down at them with a smile that would rival even Aunt Petunia's on a good day.

"Hello Zia, Harry. I was a friend of your parents. This is my son Ron and it's his first year at Hogwarts too." She stated, pushing the boy standing beside her forward slightly. Draco scrunched up his face when he noticed the Weasley was staring at Zia and Harry like they were some of trophy person.

"If you don't mind we're going to sit with Draco." Harry stated softly.

"Ron is more than welcome to sit with us on the train though." Zia quickly offered when she noticed the other woman's race get nearly as red as her hair. Ron scrunched up his nose in disgust before he climbed the steps onto the train. She shrugged slightly before she climbed into the train behind him, going to find a compartment for the four of them. Narcissa looked down at her nephew and offered a small smile.

"Thank you for helping us with our trunks." Harry stated softly, offering her a small unsure smile. Narcissa glanced over at her husband for a moment before she turned back to the two boys standing in front of her. She reached out to pull Draco into a hug, holding him tight for a moment before she let him go. Draco rolled his eyes slightly before he got onto the train with Harry behind him.

"Zia is probably towards the exits." Harry muttered as Draco began to look into each of the compartments. He walked further back attempting to ignore the whispers as he walked back, feeling slightly uncomfortable as students standing in the isle began to stare at him.

"Don't you all have something better to do?! If you don't mind your own business you will being hearing from my father." Draco snapped, leveling one group of students with a sneer that he hoped looked similar to his father's. Harry couldn't help but chuckle, shaking his head before he pulled a compartment door open. Zia sat next to the window, looking out at the scenery as the train began to pull out of the station. Ron was sitting across from her with a curious look on his face, seeming to stare at the scar on her cheek. Harry frowned slightly before he moved to sit down beside her while Draco sat next to Ron with his arms crossed.

"I'm Ron Weasley. You might stick with me since you don't want to be seen making friends with the wrong sort." He stated, holding out his hand for Harry to shake. Harry looked down at the offered hand before he glanced at Zia noticing she wore a similar confused expression.

"Oh, and the Weasels are so much better? Your blood traitors that stand beside a mad man." Draco snapped, glaring at the red head.

"You shouldn't speak about Professor Dumbledore like that! And he's a great wizard whereas your slimy father is a known Death Eater who should have been tossed into Azkaban and the key thrown away!" Ron snapped. Harry quickly stood up to stand between the two boys, hoping to stop them from fighting. Ron gritted his teeth, lunging for Draco only to collide with Harry's body, throwing them both onto the ground.

"That is enough!" a stern voice stated catching their attention. Harry groaned, reaching up to rub his forehead when he noticed an older student already dressed in their robes with a gold badge pinned to the left chest.

"What is the meaning of this?" he demanded once he had pulled Ron and Harry apart.

"Harry jumped between these two like an idiot, but he was attempting to break up a fight." Zia stated quickly jumping to her brother's rescue. Harry glanced at her and the older student, noticing he had a green and grey tie and there was a snake crest. Draco smirked slightly noticing the perfect give Ron a warning glance.

"Trying to lose points before you're even sorted into the lions Mr. Weasley?" the Perfect stated, crossing his arms.

"I didn't start it. You're only saying anything because it's Malfoy." Ron snapped with his face flushing nearly as red as his hair. Harry and Zia both shared a look as the three boys continued to argue, clearly not caring about the others in the compartment. Zia rolled her eyes, glancing at her brother for a moment before she stood up.

"Come on. Let's leave these three to argue about who's ever house is better. I'm finding somewhere else to sit that isn't anywhere near them." She complained. Harry quickly nodded following her out into the isle.

"I swear I'm beginning to wonder if that prison school Aunt Petunia wanted to send us to would have been better than this." Zia muttered in annoyance.

Severus was silent as he paced back and forth in his private chambers, his mind reeling as he thought about the fact that his son would be walking through the Hogwarts halls and into the Great Hall for his sorting in a matter of hours. He glanced over at the portrait of him and Bella on their wedding day. The black-haired witch beamed at him, waving her hand. He smiled slightly before he turned his attention to the fireplace, still waiting for the Floo call from Narcissa to tell him how the train station went. He glanced down at his arm for a moment, the snake under his sleeve tingling slightly.

"Severus are you there?" Narcissa's voice suddenly questioned, catching his attention again. He moved over to the fireplace, kneeling down to look at his sister in law, nervous to hear what she said.

"How did the train station go? Did he make it onto the platform without any problems?" Severus quickly demanded.

"Him and Zia Potter made it onto the platform without any problems that I noticed. I helped them get their trunks on the train and they seemed to get along with Draco. However, apparently Molly Weasley was instructed to help the twins onto the platform and she did introduce her youngest son, Ronald to the twins as soon as she spotted them standing with me." Narcissa explained. Severus frowned slightly, thinking about how Dumbledore had seemed excited about the twins' acceptance letters.

"I feel like the headmaster probably had something to do with that. Is there anything else you wanted to tell me about my son? Or can I go speak with the headmaster on this simple matter." He stated, moving to stand up.

"Actually, there is something else that I was needing to speak to you about, but you need to step through because it's not exactly something that we can speak about freely." Narcissa stated. Severus raised an eyebrow before he nodded, watching as she disappeared from the coals, the flames returning to normal. He grabbed his wand, extinguishing the red flames. He sighed before he stood up, straightening his back before he reached to grab a small red jar that had red children's handprints on it. He couldn't help the smile that slipped onto his face as he thought about the afternoon his little Hadrian had made it after spending the day in their cottage in a small muggle town. Bellatrix had been unsure about allowing him to play with the muggle finger paints but Severus had easily managed to win her over. Hadrian had taken to them almost instantly though thankfully they had magic to clean up both him and their floors after he had gotten it on everything except the paper they had spelled onto the floor for him. He took a deep breath, shaking his head before he grabbed a small handful of the Floo Powder before he stepped into the fireplace.

"Malfoy Manor!" he stated clearly as he stepped into the fireplace. His vision was blocked for a moment as the green flames came up before he felt the familiar tug. He stepped out of the fireplace silently, glancing around the Floo Room. Narcissa stood close to the door dressed in one of her midnight blue robes with her black and blonde hair pulled back out of her face. She sighed slightly before motioning for him to follow her. Lucius glanced up when they stepped into the library, closing the leather-bound book in his hands.

"Lucius." The potions' master greeted, bowing his head slightly in respect.

"The Dark Lord asked to speak with the three of us. He only to me it had something to do with the night of his downfall." Lucius stated, standing up. He grabbed his cane before showing them to a room that was warded from anyone other than the select few who were keyed into the wards. He pulled his wand from the tip of the cane, raising it while muttering a silent incantation under his breath. Severus held out his own wand while Narcissa summoned a house elf to bring them tea and a snack.

"Severus, Lucius…how delighted I am to see the two of you. Narcissa as lovely and beautiful as ever." Marvolo stated when the three of them stepped into the room. Severus looked at the weakened figure of the Dark Lord. He looked like the age he should have been rather than the healthy and powerful wizard that so many feared.

"Severus it has recently come to my knowledge that young Hadrian was discovered to have survived what we thought was his death. Tell me…how does the boy live?" Marvolo questioned.

"That is not something I can actually answer my lord as I have yet to actually speak with my son. However, I do know that he was with the Potters as both he and the girl Zia are considered twins. The very cause of your…downfall…my lord." Severus stated, bowing slightly. Marvolo simply frowned before he looked down at the book of Dark spells that was in his lap. They all knew that he didn't remember attacking the Potters' that night in Godric's Hallow, simply remembering that he had gone to speak with them about important information that had come to light. The Potters' had been considered nearly like family to him along with Severus, Bellatrix and the Malfoys, his most trusted followers. When he had discovered that they had fallen for the lies that Dumbledore went around sprout about him wanting to destroy all Muggleborns and Halfbloods, he had been hurt simply because they had all always known the wizard spoke nothing but lies.

"My lord?" Narcissa questioned softly, stepping forward. Marvolo raised his hand to assure her he was alright, his mind once again wandering to that Halloween when he had nearly lost everything.

"It makes no sense. There is no reason I should not remember why I was at their cottage. There is no reason I should have been able to get in if they were truly under the Fidelius Charm." He mused. Severus raised an eyebrow before he moved to lean again one of the bookshelves, thinking for a moment. That night they had all been on guard once Severus had gotten word that Dumbledore had planned to attack one of the lower Death Eaters' homes but there had never been anything.

"It does not matter. Those traitors were taken care of whether it was by you or by Dumbledore. What I want to know is why was my nephew there? Why was he taken when he should have been with his father since the old fool has always thought that Severus was his spy on the inside?" Lucius demanded. Severus flinched slightly, for a moment remembering his wife's fury. She was known for having the notorious temper that the Black family was known for. Marvolo eyed Lucius slightly for a moment before he turned his attention back to the book in his hands.

"Because I do not honestly believe that the Potters' were traitors like you think. Lily and James were considered our friends, their daughter born right alongside Hadrian. It was a known fact that Dumbledore believed in taking Pureblood children and placing them among muggle families strictly so he would have more power. Why would he take out the Potters who were supposed to be on his side if not for what? What did he gain by losing them?" Marvolo questioned. Severus frowned as he thought for a moment. After Bellatrix had been locked up Dumbledore had come to him, requesting that he take over the seat for the Prince chair in the Wizengamot. He was did not personally hold any official power since his family name was not one of the Ancient and Nobles houses.

"Zia is underage. Dumbledore holds the vote for her chairs meaning…he has more sway than anyone on what laws get passed and what ones get thrown out." He suddenly whispered. He remembered Lucius complaining multiple times about Dumbledore halting a law that would help the wizarding communities or laws that would benefit the Pureblood families that hold standings. Marvolo simply nodded, watching as Severus seemed to understand. He turned away for a moment, no longer listening as the Dark Lord began to speak of a plan that would return him to his former power, no longer depending on others. He glanced down when he felt something brush against his leg, flinching slightly when he realized it was Marvolo's familiar, Nagini, a huge snake that was highly poisonous.

"I need to return to Hogwarts. I want to speak with Headmaster Dumbledore before the students arrive." Severus stated, quickly making his exit.

The young professor had barely stepped into his private chambers when he realized that the candles that he had left burning were extinguished. He frowned slightly, reaching for his wand that was strapped into the harness on his left forearm.

"Peeves if this is your attempt at an ill-mannered joke you can stop it this instant or I will get the Bloody Baron." He snapped, raising his voice to be heard through the chambers. He pulled his wand when he received no response in return, slowly stepping out into his classroom. Headmaster Dumbledore was standing in the middle of the room looking around, Severus seeming to remain unnoticed. He frowned slightly, slipping his wand back into his holster.

"Headmaster Dumbledore, I was just about to come see you sir. There is something I would like to speak with you about sir." He stated.

"Ah, Severus. Just returning from meeting with our….mutual accantince?" Dumbledore finally questioned, turning to face him. Severus couldn't help but flinch slightly before he quickly straightened his resolve. He was determined to get answers on just why his son was placed with the Potters and why he had not been at least told the truth if he was supposed to be the trusted spy for the Light side.

"Yes sir, I was. However since you seem to already know that perhaps you can explain to me why you are in here? Minerva already looked over my classes and my classroom is the same as it has been for the last several years." He questioned, stepping closer. "Actually here is a better one. Why was Hadrian Snape taken from me as a one year old little boy and placed with the Potters?" Dumbledore stared at him, not even bothering to hide the shock that was written across his face. Severus had a sinking feeling in his stomach that Dumbledore had something to do with the ministry raid and his son's faked death.

"Just how did you discover this…interesting piece of information? I assure you I checked little Hadrian over myself. He was dead, Severus. I had assumed you had gotten over your grief." Dumbledore lied, clearly hoping to convince his spy of his son's survival.

"I'm not going to fall for that Headmaster. My son was raised by the Potters under the name Harry. I saw his letter that day in Diagon Alley and I demand answers or I will take my son and disappear into Muggle England where I know I can hide and you will never find us." Severus snapped, glaring at the old man. He could see the gears in the headmaster's head turning, clearly attempting to come up with some type of story to convince him that he had done the right thing, just like he did some many years ago when he had still been a student.

"I had gotten word from James that he feared Bellatrix Black was going to harm her son. You must realize Severus that I was worried for the boy's safety. Seeing as Bellatrix was the mother of your child I fear you would try to take the boy back to that abusive woman if I ever did tell you the truth." Dumbledore finally answered. Severus gritted his teeth together, furious at the disrespect of his wife. Bella had adored their son and it had broken her when they thought he had died while they were doing what was ordered of them. He had closed himself off, away from his family and poured himself deeper into his potions, furious with himself and with the Malfoys. For years he had blamed them for losing his son and later his wife but now he understood that Dumbledore had lied to him, had taken his son away and placed him with the Potters simply because it was something he had the power to do.

"You're a lying old fool!" He finally snapped, his charcoal eyes darkening as he glared at the old man. He turned to storm out of the room when he felt the Leg Locking spell hit him in the center of his back, sending him tumbling to the ground. Dumbledore stood over him with the Elder wand pointed at his face.

"I can't have you going around telling anyone what you know my body. You must understand that what I do is for the greater good of everyone." Dumbledore stated. Severus' eyes grew wide as his mind worked out just what the headmaster planned on doing.

"Obliviate!" he muttered, sending a white spell out, erasing the recent memories of what had been discovered.
