Chapter One
Megan was still feeling a little tired from working late, as she and Don were driving up to interview one of the witnesses to the murder of a federal witness to one of their cases that has been going on the last six months.
"Are you sure you are okay to work?" Don asked, concerned about his partner, the last few months have been trying for all of them
"Yeah, thanks to you telling me to take the morning off, I got some sleep, as I would think you did too." She remarked, smirking
"I just want to make sure that…" He started
"I'm fine, and besides, you worked late too, remember?" She shot back, laughing at her partner's tired face, which was also reddening in embarrassment.
"Okay, I get the hint." Don said, laughing as he continued to drive to the crime scene, with David and Colby already there, with Charlie and Larry also coming, as they both insisted that they needed to be there to get more data. Charlie, Don understood, but not as much with Larry, though Don secretly guessed that Larry just wanted to work closely with Megan, which was fine with him.
'Besides,' Don thought, 'Maybe Larry will be able to think of something that no one else may be able to think of.'
As they got closer to the scene, Don decided that they needed to go over the case again, as he was trying to figure out as to why there have been so many problems with this case.
"Jim Sanders was one of the best witnesses we got in the Bowers case, and now with his death, it's going to be harder to nail that guy."
"This case is getting more frustrating by the day." Megan said, equally as frustrated as he was because Robert Bowers was a powerful businessman with many connections and the government has been having trouble linking him to corrupt activity, having very little evidence to go by.
Jim Sanders was an employee at one of his businesses and witnessed Bowers, along with three men, kill two dockworkers and hide their bodies. Sanders quietly called the FBI and he agreed to testify in exchange to be put in the witness protection program but before that could happen he had been killed a couple hours ago and now they might not be able to find who the dockworkers were and where their bodies were.
"Don, we will find a way to take this guy down." Megan said, doing her best to reassure him
"I know, but it still gets frustrating," Don mumbled
Both Don and Megan suspected that there was either a leak or there might be a mole on the inside, neither are good things to think about. While they were thinking through the case, neither noticed a dark vehicle starting to follow them to the crime scene.
