The war never happened so major events from the books and films never took place. Pureblood supremacy still lives on unfortunately, just no Tom Riddle. Potters still died as I don't like James Potter.
Minerva hated the fact that the pure blooded cold hearted wife of a pureblood supremacist had to much on her that she couldn't deny the woman from taking the young girl. The same young lass that meant far to much to her and if she tried to fight Narcissa and keeping Hermione from her it wouldn't abode well for any of them.
Which is why she watched in silent disapproval of the retreating backs of the strange couple mingling into the large crowd populating Diagon Alley.
Hermione was a clever lass but very lonely. She had spent the past nine years watching over the precious bundle, her heart breaking all over again as she watched from afar. The lass had the crazed curls that associated with Her but had Minerva's colouring. Chocolate eyes that belonged to Her.
Even after all these years Minerva could never forgive herself for letting down the two most important people in her life. Watching Hermione had brought back long buried memories and painful emotions.
"Why not tell the girl Minerva? Would it not be an advantage over Narcissa if she was to be told the truth." Albus Dumbledore's amused voice broke through her thoughts bringing her back to reality.
Minerva rolled her eyes at the grandfatherly figure that haunted the halls of Hogwarts on a daily basis. "The lass will not forgive me Albus and you know that. Why now? Why is Narcissa interested in her now? She is just a young lass and Narcissa can not..."
"Surely you do not believe that?"
Minerva growled at the sight of Severus striding smugly through the doorway of the Headmaster's tower. Her lips thinned upon noticing of a young lad nervously hovering behind the no nonsense potions master.
"Ah Severus my boy." Albus interrupted the silent stand off, warmly welcoming back his youngest and dearest colleague and friend. "And who do we have here?"
The young boy looked towards Severus, his glasses far to large for his small face and his black messy hair sticking up in all directions. Minerva held her tongue, biting back the retort at seeing the boy's unsightly clothing that hang upon his thin frame.
"I'm sure you are aware of young Harry.. it has been decided that Harry shall be staying with me from now on." His tone was firm but startling warm as his black eyes swept over the boy.
Albums smiled indulgently at Harry, "Ah of course. My apologies, well come here my boy.. I believe we will find something you will enjoy in my secret stash." He winked, sliding open a draw in his desk overflowing with Muggle candy.
The boy's green boys lit up and the smile grew upon his face as he threw caution to the wind and left the potion masters side.
Severus returned his attention to the deputy Head of Hogwarts. "If we are discussing Miss Granger I do believe you have nothing to worry about. You, Minerva of all people know Narcissa will protect the girl with her life and nothing untoward will happen." A mischievous glint appeared in his eye, the signature smirk in place, "well not until the girl matures anyway."
Minerva growled again, the tabby cat inside her threatening to take over. Severus just grinned, enjoying ruffling up the older woman.
"Severus is correct Minnie. You of all people understand that we can not interfere with the growing bond. I will of course be keeping a close eye on them and when young Hermione comes to Hogwarts in a few years she will be even closer for us to watch over." Albus gently touched his long time friend's shoulder, "she is every bit you and you must trust that the universe has grand plans for our young tabby."
"So I am meant to accept this. She doesn't.. I can't.."
"Yes, yes you will accept it. Narcissa and Hermione are meant to meet and the bond shall grow. Please Minerva, you must not interfere with the Prophecy.. If you do then everything that you have sacrificed will be for nothing."
Minerva understood, she really did. After all it was she that lost the love of her life and her precious daughter all for the godforsaken Prophecy. A Prophecy that she wished never had come true.
A lone tear slipped down her cheek, Albus and Severus turned away to allow their friend to compose herself.
