Her life was the same as usual, she was occupied with work and with volunteering, but, somehow all changed.
All that was left of the night of her biggest mistakes, was her and Gold's memory. She couldn't shake off the thought that Gold's hand were on her body and under the shower jet, she rubbed her skin hard with the sponge as if the soap could wash off that thought.
How could she have permitted that to happen? She knew Gold well, all he wanted was to have fun, but, a remote part of her had to admit it, she had fun as well, so, where was the problem? That night stress overhelmed her and she needed it so, in a way, she used him as well.
From that day she avoided remaining in the lab till late, with the lights switch off she had the feeling that the shadows themselves could turn into the boy. However, her job at the priority over her sensations, so one night she remained longer than professor Oak, it was dark outside but it wasn't so late that she had to sleep there.
She switched off the lights and stepped out checking twice on the door, to made sure it was closed, and, when she turned, as if he appeared out of nowhere, Gold was in front of her.
-Yo Crys!
She put the keys back in her purse and started walking past him.
-Hello, Gold- she greeted with her usual tone, pretending she didn't knew why he was there.
He went after her, she was walking fast. -Aren't you staying today?
-I want to go home.
He smirked. -Am I invited too?
She glared at him but continued walking.
He quickened his pace and stopped in front of her. -Come on Crys, don't give me the could shouders- he said and then lowered toward her, whispering his next sentence. -I know you liked it, so why don't do it again?
She was unfazed and just passed him. –Because we don't have that kind of relationship.
He followed her. -If now we aren't friends with benefits, then I don't know what.
She stopped and her voice came through gritted teeth. -Friends. Just friends. It was a stand alone night, it won't happen again.
She fell silent for a moment, then, starting to walk, she spoke again. -Sorry, Gold. I made a mistake.
He remained where he was. -I don't understand you. I didn't force you.
He couldn't see it, but she gulped and clenched her teeth, silently begging him to leave her alone.
-Would you still consider it a mistake if I was someonelse?
She froze on place. Her legs started to shake under an invisible weight. She wanted to say something, but every words died before reaching her lips.
Gold took a deep breath and he put the hands in his pockets. -So, I'm right.
He turned and started to walk away. -Good night, Crys.
But he had to stop when he thought he had heard her say something.
-I wouldn't have made that mistake… except with you- she said with a shaken voice.
She was still giving him her back and Gold, slowly, approached her and suddenly embraced her tight. She didn't reject him and they stood like that without saying anything, they were completely alone, surronded by darkness once again.
Then, a sniff broke the silence and he felt a warm tear fall on his hand. He tried to look at her, but she inclined her face, hiding it. – Don't look a me.
-Why not?
She didn't answer. Gold placed his hands on her shoulders and turned her so he could face her. –You know what makes me really angry about you? You always try to be perfect and you schedule everything, it's so annoying!
She slapped his hand from her shouder and step back. -If you hate it so much why don't you leave me alone?
-Because, Crys- he shouted doing a step forward. -I want you to have you in the light.
She looked astonished.
-I don't give a crap about perfection! I want to see you being casual even if that means show your insecurities and tears. And those damn hair! I want to see them untied! I don't want to be just a mistake, Crys.
He stopped breathing waiting her reaction. He seemed unavere of his fidgetting heel, but she noticed it.
-Gold-, she begun, stepping back. -I know how you are and I don't want to be just another girl deluded by you.
She was about to leave but he grabbed her wrist. -It wouldn't happen, I don't want to hurt you, cause I…
Words died in his throat. He gulped, still holding her wrist; she wasn't facing him.
He spoke again. -Don't you think that, avoiding situations in which you might suffer or make mistaks, may be the biggest mistakes of all?
Under his grip, he felt her relax and he let go of her.
Initially, it was awkward but slowely, with time, their role returned to normal, as if that night and their conversation afterward never happened.
Gold didn't want to insist and respected her decision, or, more corretly her indecision, but he would have lied if he said he wasn't still suffering for what happened. He was still wishing to see her hair untied but, maybe, things were meant to be in that way, he would not have been the one who would have seen them. Accepting the reality, even if it didn't required any efforts, he did his best to return to his annoying self.
Crystal took more time to act as before toward him but, eventually, she seemed to have left what happened in the past but, if her mind was almost at peace now, for her body was more difficult as she was feeling more and more tired abd It wasn't all... as time went on, she received some other worrysome clue from her body but she refused to believe that it was what she thought.
One morning, Gold went to Oak's lab since his pokedex was having problems again.
-It wasn't my falt this time- he tried to justify himself at the professor's glance.
The man started to check the appliance while Gold leaned against a desk whistling, but he didn't last long in that position and he looked around him.
-Where's Crys?- he suddenly asked.
-She called me yesterday telling she was feeling sick.
Gold wondered why, his first thought was that she must be having a bad case of diarrhea, nevertheless, he decided to stop by her home.
He knocked at the door calling her but he didn't receive any answer.
-Super serious gal, are you okay?
Again, no answer came but, after a while, he heard quick footsteps from inside and then the flush of the toilet. Advising of it, he stepped inside and follow the coughs to the bathroom. The door was ajar but he restrained himself from peeking inside.
-Crys, are you alright?- he asked.
-I'm fine- she aswered with a weak voice and told him to leave or, at least, tried as she started to cough again.
He pushed the door a little and saw the girl kneeled in front if the toilet. She didn't seemed fine at all, she was pale, her eyes looked tired and above all, after so many years, he saw her hair untied. This wasn't how he was expectiong to see them the first time, but that wasn't the right moment to point it out.
-Gold, go away- she was almost pleading.
-Did you ate something bad?
She stare at him for a moment, then looked away. -No.
She gulped, he feared she was about to retch, but she spoke again. -My period has not come yet.
His stomach twisted but he tried to not show it, he didn't wanted to panic, at least not in front of her. Starting to sweat, he sit beside her. -Did you… did you already took the test?
She shook her head. -I was afraid to know it, but at this point it seems unnecessary.
He didn't knew what to say or do but then, bile went up her throat again and he reached to hold her hair back.
-So… What are your intentions?- he asked once she finished.
She took a deep breath. -I don't know.
Then a thought crossed his mind. -Where you thinking on telling me?
-I don't know...- was her answer again.
They stood in silence for a while, then she was the one asking a question. -And what about you? Now you know it, so…
He leaned his back against the wall. –I don't know… I mean, I'm half responsible for this but… the last word it's yours, it's your body after all-, he look up, to the ceiling. -I thought that one day I would became father and, I like the idea, just... I wasn't expecting it to be so early. But, I'll support your decision, whatever it will be...
-Gold.
He turned to watch her, but she didn't returned his look as she spoke. -Whatever we decide, I don't want you too feel obliged to stay with me.
-It wouldn't be an obligation, Crys- he answered and, after a pause, he continued. -I care for you, more than just a friend. You have to believe me this time, since I'm saying this sitted on the floor of a bathroom that smells of your puke and while you look so unappealing.
He made a gentle smile glancing at her and she did the same, now she looked more at ease, without worrying to appear to him at her best and as they just stood there, sitting on the floor in silence, he thought that that was how things should be between them.
-Light...- he broke the silence. -We should call him, or her, Light.
-Gold-, there was a hint of warn in her voice. -If you already pick up a name, it will make things more difficult...
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. -But yes, it is a nice name.
Whatever their decision would have been, only time could tell if that night had really been a mistake.
