Author's note: Hey everyone! I have to tell you that I have no idea how the formatting works on here, so I'm still getting used to it all. I've been trying to fix the first chapter where margins should be, but for some reason they never showed. Also, I'm trying to refresh my memory of the Negima world, so bear with me if some of these characters may seem out of character to you. I'm trying to keep them as close to the originals as possible. Anyway, enjoy this story!
Chapter Two: A Whole New World- Or Universe!
"Ugh!" I groggily said, awakening from whatever dream I just had. My eyes were blurry, but this usually happened whenever I had awoken every morning. Especially if I forgot to drink enough water the night before.
"Milady," I heard a voice, "she's awakening."
"Excellent," said the voice of a younger girl with an English accent. "Hopefully she's okay and I can continue to finish my end of the bargain. Chachamaru, Satomi did an excellent job fixing you up."
I briefly winced for a few seconds then rubbed my eyes. Only to find myself lying in a twin-size bed in a small log-cabin house room, surrounded by no less than four people. Four people that I have only seen in manga and anime from centuries ago.
Closest by my side was Chachamaru, the tall robot. Beside her was Evangeline, who eyed me with complete interest. Closest to the door however, were two people that I did not expect to see. A tall, red-headed girl with bells tied to her side-ponytails and a young teenage boy with glasses, long hair, a green suit, and a staff that was wrapped around by cloth near the top bend that looked like a wide V.
"Umm… hello?"
The teenage boy spoke. He too, had an English accent. "Hello there. Eva-san sent for Asuna-san and I as soon as you arrived. My name is Negi Springfield."
My eyes widened. "Yes! I know you! You're the teacher who's secretly a mage! And these three girls are your students! Asuna, Evangeline, and Chachamaru!"
Hands at her hips, Asuna gave me a look. "How exactly do you know us? Are you a spy for the enemy?"
Mercenaries try to attack them. I remember seeing them trying to kidnap someone in this class in an old anime adaptation of the manga. Yes! Konoka Konoe! And her best friend and protector who fought to get her back was Setsuna! Setsuna Sakurazaki!
"Hell no I'm not!" I bluntly responded. "Though, I daresay I wound up here by accident. I was only trying to go back in time a few months! Not several centuries before!"
Asuna's jaw dropped. "That transport you were in was a time machine?"
"Yes," I replied. "I only intended to go back in time in my place, but now I'm here. Where I'm from, you guys are nothing but a mere writing."
My eyes lowered to my feet, which were covered along with my legs by a nice blue and white quilt-like blanket. Mere writing. Somehow, I had brought myself into the Negima world. The world where Negima exists. Where he has a separate world of the magi. Where the city-sized Majora Academy stood and where a large population of over 30,000 attended classes.
"But now, you're here, and I'm in your world. Did I just travel between universes?"
Evangeline gave a cough. "If we're only literature in your world, then you have indeed, traveled in between universes with that machine of yours."
"Your machine was transported to Satomi's laboratory for repairs," Chachamaru added. "We found a manual under your seat. Full of information of how to repair it completely. Satomi will run a diagnostic tomorrow. They are still cleaning up after my repair."
"Thank you," I told her. I then moved my eyes to Negi. "Before I forget, my name is Yuki Kubo. I was born in 2496 in Tokyo, Japan, but traveled directly from the year 2512. With what I am now figuring out, not only did I just travel back in time, but I also traveled into another universe. Your universe."
The Negima Universe. That's what I intend to call it. Where the Negima world exists. Or to be precise, the Negima worlds.
Everyone's eyes widened. Even Negi's.
"What year, month, and day is this?" I asked, curiously looking around at all of them. "If I am not mistaken, I have traveled over five centuries to the past when I only meant to go a few months in my own universe in general."
"Year 2004," Evangeline answered. "Month of March. Day 20. May I call you Yuki-san?"
I nodded. "Yes Eva-san."
Her eyes widened as I said her name. "Yes Yuki-san, you may call me by that name."
"Chachamaru-san," Chachamaru said, attempting an ancient handshake.
I shook my head. "We simply bow in my time. In our year 2020, there was a deadly pandemic with a highly contagious disease that lasted several months before scientists could find a cure."
Lowering her hand, she graciously bowed, prompting me to bow back. "My apologies."
"No need to worry," I replied, raising back my head then doing the same with everyone else in the room. I then looked at Asuna. "You're Asuna-san! Pleasure to meet you!"
"Same here," she coolly responded. "You're obviously around our age. You look like you could be a part of our class."
I gave her a look. "Exactly how old are you? I'm sixteen and a senior in high school."
Everyone in the room gasped.
"When it comes to brains you're the closest one to Negi-kun!" Asuna exclaimed. "Yuki-san, how did you get so smart?"
My heart sank as I remembered Cheiri. I hung out with her for so long that I developed the same studying habits. The same lifestyle. Even the same smarts.
Back then, my family encouraged me to hang out with her. She didn't have many friends and even had several haters. However, I was the friend who stuck with her to the end. Because I had people who were afraid of me too. Because of my burlesque appearance and manly deep voice.
Everyone thought I'm scary and hardly messed with me. I was a girl who obviously wanted to become a boy. Nothing got any simpler than that.
"A friend whom I wanted to meet back in time," I vivaciously responded at the thought of Chieri and my life prior to her death, looking at Negi. "Professor Springfield, I remember Satomi devising a time machine of her own in a television version of what was written in my universe. Would that device be existent in this time?"
Everyone else turned to him.
"Yes," he replied, "but you traveled here using a device that took you over not only centuries but also a universe. You may travel back to your time, but you would still be in our universe."
Drat. I guess I'll have to wait until Satomi figures out how to work the time machine. Could be several weeks and possibly several months. No one in this era would know how to work the technology my parents created.
Not even the people in my time.
"True," I said, noticing an empty chair with my clothes draped over it. "I'm assuming I'll have to get a new change of clothes. Clothes from your time."
Negi smiled. "Starting with the Mahora Academy uniform. Yuki-san, you will be joining Class 3A, but first, I must speak to Konoemon."
Asuna geered at me. "You know who that is. Right?"
"The headmaster of Mahora. He's the grandfather of Konoka Konoe."
At this point, no one gave a crazed reaction.
Evangeline and Chachamaru allowed me to stay in the same room. Since there was a lack of rooms in the dorms plus they couldn't risk me staying in with one of the other students. Not to also mention Evangeline appeared to have this thing about me. I could read it in her mind. Even Chachamaru can tell she really wants me to stick around.
Little does anyone know, I've had a way of reading minds from time to time, but only if someone felt a strongly in a certain way about me. I don't know how, but it's happened before.
Anyway, I reported to school a few days later. And after one little night tour by Evangeline herself. With the assistance of Chachamaru of course.
Class 3A was just as I pictured it. However, there was an extra desk in the room brought specifically for me. I was now Student 32. I could already see the empty desk by the time Negi walked me into the room. Everyone gasped at the sight of me.
The classroom gave their greeting and Negi returned the gesture. He was quick to put his teacher stuff down, press his glasses closer to his nose, and smile.
"Good morning class!" he politely began. "Today, Class 3A has a new student. Her name is Yuki Kubo, and she comes from Tokyo, Japan."
Everyone gasped in shock as I blushed. I was now forced to wear the Mahora Academy uniform. White button down T shirt with a loose bow tie. Special rose vest, matching blazer, and a red plaid skirt. This was a complete 180 from being at school back in 2512.
"Thank you for having me everyone!" I replied, prompting the class to all stand up, bow, and issue their welcome before sitting back down in unison. I honestly did not expect this from them. "As Professor Springfield has said, I am Yuki Kubo. Just a girl from Tokyo, Japan. Attended a high-tech school but really needed to get out of there! You know! High school drama at it's finest!"
I gave off a nervous laugh.
One after the other exchanged bows with me. In a shuffled mode because I could read their minds. They were all nervous to talk to me. All were simple welcomes to the class. However, that didn't last until right before the very end.
Ayaka Yukihiro, the tall blonde girl, eventually welcomed me to the classroom. She politely bowed. "Welcome Yuki! Or may I call you Yuki-san! I am Ayaka Yukihiro, Class Rep who assists Professor Springfield from time to time by leading the class of 3A to success!"
I politely bowed back. "Good morning, Ayaka-san. Thank you for the greeting."
Gag me with a spoon why don't you. I can see why Asuna would fight this chick just about every day. She's way out of my personality range.
A brunette was the next person to stand up and greet me. She had brown eyes and a very polite smile. Then when she spoke, she had a slightly high-pitched but cheery voice. "Good Morning Yuki-san! I am Konoka Konoe, the granddaughter of Headmaster Konoemon. Gramps told me that you'd be joining us this year."
We exchanged bows and then she sat back down. Only to be followed by none other than her personal bodyguard.
"I am Setsuna Sakurazaki," she said, giving off a formal bow and prompting me to quickly return the exchange. "Do you fight?"
I bluntly answered that question. "No. Not if it's for fun. If it's to defend my best friend, indeed, I'd fight."
The class gasped as she sat back down.
A purple-haired girl sporting a medium bob with bangs in front of her face was next. "Nodoka Miyazaki. Yuki-san, do you have an interest in books and exploration?"
My heart sank at the memory of my best friend. "No Nodoka-san, but my best friend liked it a lot. May she rest in peace."
At that point, the mood got a little more sympathetic than excited. I couldn't help it. Chieri can never leave my mind.
Then came Yue. Long-blue hair and an expressionless face. "You're always welcome to hang out with the Literary Club. If you need to get away from your room for a bit."
"I'd like that," I replied, remembering how much Chieri said she wished she could explore the library. "Anything to honor my best friend's legacy."
Introductions over. As I made my way back to my seat, I noticed a girl with long-green hair and glasses following me as until I passed her. Haruna Saotome. Rumor-mill resided with her from what Chieri once told me. Guess I must be on my best behavior around her.
And so, class began. Then so I fought hard to listen. Even though I had learned this lesson already in the fifth grade. Literature basically. I was way too advanced compared to these sophomores.
At one point, Haruna ripped a piece of paper from her notebook, wrote on it, and passed it atop my desk.
Are you really a girl?
At that point, I snorted loudly, prompting the entire class including Negi to turn in my direction. My face immediately went fire-engine red as my hand covered the note.
"I would have had the same reaction," Makie Sasaki, the rhythmic gymnast with the medium pink but messy bob, replied. "Yuki's really feeling the literature on this lesson!"
The class was going over the Romeo and Juliet play script to be exact. Specifically the part where Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. Perfect timing, because I found that scene tacky anyway.
Thank God Chieri was more of an anime and manga person. With my secret crush on her, I would have had a hard time shaking off those feelings when I was around her. Especially since her preferences were cloudy to me. I could only read her mind whenever I was somehow involved in her thoughts.
I could read anyone's mind if they were thinking about me. Faint comparison to the generations above me. Those people could have done way more.
Chizuru Naba, the oldest looking girl in the class with the large chest size and long, brownish red hair, was the next to speak. "Or she's thinking about someone else."
At this point, I gave Haruna an irate look. However, her face grew to nothing more of concern. Like she felt sorry for me. I could somehow sense what she was thinking as our eyes met. My sleepy hazel eyes meeting her dark red ones.
However, I broke my eye contact with her and looked around at everyone. "I already read the literature during my last year of elementary."
Everyone gasped, and Haruna's face lit up with shock.
"WHAT?" she exclaimed. "You read it that early?"
I nodded. "Kids where I come from are advanced and mature enough to learn about adults. You know, in America, they teach kids about adults as early as age eleven."
Everyone was flabbergasted. Not only could I tell it in their faces, but also in their minds.
Asakura Kazumi, the class reporter, was the next to talk. I could tell whom she was by her red and wavy ponytail hairstyle. Brown eyes wide as she pulled out her camera and took a picture of me, prompting me to smile despite the fact this was all embarrassing. "Don't worry! I'm just taking the photo! Yuki-san, I've already got the scoop on you, so I'm leaving this little event out!"
Elbow up and hand behind my head, I continued to smile in embarrassment. "Thank you Asakura-san! That's a really nice welcoming gift!"
As I said it, a ghost wearing an older school uniform emerged from behind her. Cheery but faint ghostly voice to be exact. "Don't worry! I'll make sure Asakura gives you a warm welcome in her article!"
I nodded. "I'll take your word for it, Sayo-san!"
Sayo's jaw dropped. "You can see me?"
"Yeah!" I replied without a care in the world. Prompting even more gasps- except for Haruna, who remained flabbergasted at the sight of me. "My family says it happens from generation to generation, so it's very much normal."
My ancestors centuries ago were said to interact with ghosts on a daily basis. It hasn't been as frequent since then, but from generation to generation over this wide amount of time, the Kubo family has been visited by ghosts. Generations ago, we were even royal. Related to the hybrid-human alien family, the Minamotos.
At this point, Negi gave a firm cough. Now class, Miss Kubo obviously is overwhelmed by all of the attention. May we save our questions for her later and continue this class?"
At that point, everyone quickly returned to the play. Haruna turned around again, and I silently let out a sigh of relief. Not without catching the eye of my new professor.
I found myself getting takeout at the cafeteria and returning to Evangeline's. She and Chachamaru waited for me in the living room. Gathered around a kotatsu as even late March was still cold. Soup and tea were neatly placed as a dinner setting, making me feel even more embarrassed that I didn't ask them about dinner plans.
Now wearing one of her vampire-like lace dresses, Evangeline didn't seem too bothered. "I hope you don't mind, but some of the girls took the liberty of gathering some localized clothes for you to wear in the meantime. As much as you enjoy your futuristic wardrobe, it will quickly attract attention and make people wonder if you truly are an alien."
Chachamaru added her two cents. "Milady is right Yuki-san. You may also want to tone down your attitude in class. Not that it is bad, but it has quickly drawn attention."
"Asakura-san even wrote a piece about you!" Evangeline said, nudging her head to a nearby paper. "Tomorrow's issue has already been printed out for you to read."
"I'll take that food." Chachamaru said as I passed her, prompting me to hand over the food. "You will indulge first in milady's feast. It may be easier for your stomach after having gone through a long first day of school."
I knelt before the paper and picked it up. My smiling face was there on the front page with all my new classmates. All eyeing me with interest. However, the title of the paper caught me off guard.
Tokyo Girl Joins Class 3A and Takes the Class by Storm
"TOKYO GIRL JOINS CLASS 3A AND TAKES THE CLASS BY STORM!" I bellowed in shock. "I'M EVEN ON THE FRONT PAGE!"
"To sum it up for you you're the new talk of Mahora," Evangeline gleefully told me. "I already read it. You're the new it-girl. Therefore, I took the liberty of contacting the right girls to make sure you wander the area in style whenever you are not in your school uniform. Mystery girl!"
My jaw dropped as I caught her eye, replying at a much softer tone. "Mystery girl?"
"Just be wary of Haruna-san," Chachamaru warned. "The girl has plenty of rumor-spreading history with her name."
Bowl full of soup and chopsticks in her hands, Evangeline snorted snobbishly with the raise of her nose. "Indeed. Yuki-san, if you wish to join the Literary Club, please be careful! Being around her too much will make you feel comfortable enough to accidentally allow your secrets to slip." She then blew lightly at her bowl to waft the heat. "And also be wary of her mood swings. Those books of yours about this place may not tell you this, but I feel as though she may be developing a crush on you."
Putting the newspaper down, I quickly joined them at the kotatsu. "Crush? On me?"
