A Little Dark Hair

Chapter 2

Harvey stepped into Alex's office like he owned the world. After surviving the Faye Richardson Act, getting married to Donna, moving to Seattle, becoming a father and then deciding to settle back in New York, Harvey felt like he had conquered the world. He loved his life now. He was still the best closer that Manhattan had ever seen, but he was a different Harvey because he was a complete man. Therefore, suspecting nothing, he walked with his old Harvey Specter swagger and plopped himself in front of Alex's desk waiting to see what the other name partner was needing.

"Hey Alex! Donna and I secured a babysitter and we are ready to come to your dinner party tomorrow night. All we need to know is this a formal dinner party and who's butt are we kissing now?" Harvey joked.

"There will be no butt kissing at this party, big guy. Just the grownups getting together. Sorry to burst your bubble," Alex said smiling.

"All the better," Harvey said. "So, what did you need me for?"

Alex rose from behind his desk and started to pace back and forth. Harvey sat forward and steepled his hands in front of his face.

"Ok, this seems too serious for this time of the day, Alex. What is it?"

"Did you know that Thomas Kessler is around?"

"So? Does he want us to represent him again?"

"No. I feel very badly telling you this because to me it's unusual."

Harvey was getting impatient and unnerved at the same time.

"Alex, if he isn't suing us for something we didn't do to him, it's not that bad. So, spill," Harvey asked with emphasis.

"He asked me for Donna's phone number."

Harvey did not say anything. He looked down and brought two of his steepled fingers to his mouth and sat back. Harvey looked pensive. He trusted Donna with his life. Down deep there was no reason for Harvey to be suspicious.

"So, did he say why he wanted my wife's phone number?"

"All he said was that he wanted to catch up with her. I said he could talk to you instead and you could fill him in being that you're married now, but he said he'd rather talk with Donna."

Harvey said nothing for a few minutes. Harvey had always been somewhat jealous of any man Donna had in her life. It was not fair when they were never a "real" couple the whole time, but he still could not help feeling it. Thomas and Donna were a short time item before Harvey told Donna he wanted her for his and acted when he did. Donna assured him that Harvey had done nothing wrong by finally coming to her when he had. Donna also told Harvey that Thomas and she were for all intents and purposes ended the morning before Harvey came to her. Harvey really tried to quell the small suspicions lurking in his heart. He knew it was wrong to be suspicious of anything since there was really no evidence for his slight suspicions.

"So, did you tell Thomas that Donna's cell phone number never changed?"

"Yes."

"Good," Harvey said rising. "I'm sure it's what Thomas said it was. He's a man of honor, after all. I'm sure Donna will tell me when I get home."

"Like you said, Thomas is man of his word; so, I am sure there's no nefarious reason for his asking."

"Thank you, Alex, for letting me know."

"See you tomorrow night," Alex said. "By the way, I hope you have a lot of baby pictures. Rosalie is dying to see how big Lily is."

"Of course, I do! She's Harvey Specter's daughter isn't that a redundant? Talk with you later," Harvey said looking back and forth venturing out of Alex's office.

Donna and Lily were on the floor together. Every now and then, Donna would start a video on her camera and follow Lily around. Lily was trying to pull herself up on the furniture. They had had to put bumpers on the corners, so if Lily fell she would not be injured. Donna looked around and could not help but smile at the differences between what was once a bachelor's pad with barely a stick of furniture transformed now after a few short years into a family home replete with electrical outlet covers and toys strewn all over the floor.

"Come on Lily. We're going to send this to daddy to brighten his day!" Donna sang to her little girl. Lily was a chubby little girl and right now her mommy had had to change her bright dress to a pair of baby jeans and a top with a big balloon print which said "Daddy's Girl" in bright white letters. Donna had placed a small white baby bow in her dark hair which was parted to the side.

"Here we go Lily…"

Lily looked up at her mom while she put a Cheerio in her mouth. Donna, with the camera still on Lily, push the Cheerios lying on the table back a bit so Lily would either have to pull herself up to reach another Cheerio or wait for her mother to hand her one. Lily, a little go-getter, decided she wanted to get it herself.

With her baby hands planted on the low lying table, Lily pulled herself to a standing position after two or three attempts.

"You did it! My sweet girl…wave to daddy. Say "Look daddy, I did it!" I'm a big girl!"

Lily was just looked at the phone and listened to her mother. She had a real intense look on her little chubby face and reached for the phone. Donna pulled it gently out of her reach and kneel next to her daughter so that both their faces were on the screen. Donna took Lily's hand that was not on the phone and waved it.

"Hi Daddy!"

Lily smiled and looked hard into the phone camera as if she were trying to find Harvey in the picture.

"Dada!" Lily said happily with a big smile. "Dada!"

"Yes, that's right, Lily my baby. Dada!"

The phone suddenly rang, and Donna noticed the number and name "Thomas Kessler". She clicked off the phone camera and answered the call. Donna picked up Lily and put her in the safe play area of the living room which had been cordoned with a colorful plastic half wall.

"Thomas?" Donna said carefully.

"Donna, I just wanted to see if we could meet for lunch in a few days. If you're wondering about how I got your number, Alex Williams told me that it hadn't changed."

"So, you didn't talk to Harvey?" Donna asked. She dreaded when they came back to New York for this reason. Ultimately she felt New York City was a huge place and that she would never run into Thomas again. That was until this morning.

"Donna, I know he's your husband, but I need to talk to you about something and it's just between you and me."

"Look, Thomas, I think I know what you want to ask me, and I just want to say…"

"Donna, I don't think we should talk about Lily's father's identity until we meet."

"Harvey is my husband now. He is Lily's father, not you."

"I need to see your face when you say that."

"Why? Do you think I'm lying to you?"

"Not exactly I think you…never mind. Can I come to your house or you to mine?"

"No, Thomas! I'm not doing it. I am not going to do something to which I feel the need to lie to my husband. I'm sorry, Thomas. You are such a good man and I don't understand why you're still not with someone…"

"Well, I need to fill you in about that, too."

"Oh, so there is someone and you want to make sure that you don't have a child from a former relationship coming someday to lay claim to you," Donna said shocked.

"Donna, no, not exactly," Thomas protested.

The key clicked in the lock of the door then. Donna hurriedly looked at the clock on the microwave. It was Harvey. He was home from the office. This was only confirmed by Harvey looking around when he walked to the end of the kitchen counter. He put down his keys and spotted Lily in her play area. She was smiling and calling for him as she reached out to be picked up.

"Harvey's home. Gotta go! Bye," Donna quickly hit the red button on her phone.

Harvey, holding Lily, came over and got a kiss from Donna. They hung on for a little bit and then they sat with the baby on Harvey's lap.

"You're home on time tonight," Donna observed placing her head on his shoulder and taking one of Lily's hands began to play peek-a-boo with her.

"Yes. I thought I would just spend the evening with my two favorite girls. See? No briefcase or anything with me."

"I noticed. You forgot it and left it in the car with Ray. So, I am assuming he'll be bringing it by later?" Donna said laughing.

Harvey laughed back. "You got me. I do have some work to do, but I do want to spend time with my two favorite girls." Harvey rubbed noses with Lily and then kissed her on the tip.

"Well, dinner is done. I just need to toss the salad. Little Miss Lily Elizabeth Specter is dining at the table with us tonight, so if you would change her, I will get everything on the table."

Harvey wrinkled his nose. "Lily, what did you eat today to make a pretty little girl like you be stinky. Tell daddy. Ok, you just don't want to see what's in the diaper making her stink like that."

"Yeah, well, I get to do it all day. It's daddy's turn while mommy gets the food on the table."

"Sure," Harvey said kissing Donna again. "I got this."

He rose from the couch with Lily in his arms and proceeded to the little room near the master bedroom to change his daughter.

In the meantime, Donna rose from the couch and prepared the meal and the table.
