Meredith had a rough night that night. She slept with her head down on the hospital bed Ellis was currently sleeping in. She woke up the next morning with a crick in her neck. After realizing this wasn't some awful dream, she got up and went to get coffee and find Jo after Miranda said she would sit with Ellis and page Meredith if she needed to go somewhere. After Meredith had gotten her coffee she set off to find Jo. She found her only 5 minutes later talking to the head of Plastics and one of Meredith's close friends, Jackson Avery. She walked up to Jo and Jackson. "Hey Mer. I heard you brought Ellis in last night. Is she okay?" Jo asked. She and Miranda were the only ones who knew about Ellis. Jo knew because Meredith asked Miranda to make Jo interim Chief of General Surgery. "Actually that's what I wanted to talk to you about." Jo began to look worried. She had hated Meredith in the beginning of her and Alex's relationship. But after the Paul incident, Jo had a new respect for her. But also Meredith had become Jo's person since Alex left. And it was vice versa with Meredith. Jackson excused himself quickly but Meredith called him back. She explained the condition Ellis was in right now. "I'm going to need both of your guys help. Jackson I need you to help Maggie look after Amilea. Jo I'm going to have to ask you to help me with Zola and Bailey since Andrew is… off right now. If you guys don't want to because you have your own lives, I understand." They both agreed and started to walk away when Meredith called Jo back. "Jo I asked Miranda to look up the best pediatric surgeon with a low morbidity rate for these types of procedures." Meredith tried to explain cautiously. "Okay. Why do you need to tell me?" Meredith gave Jo a look. Jo took that look and knew who it was. "It's Alex isn't it?" Jo asked. Conflict on her face. "Yes. I wasn't going to call at all but then Zola and Bailey said I should call Alex. Then it turned out he has the lowest morbidity rates on procedures like this. I didn't want to call without asking you if you're okay with this. If you're not I'll call Arizona Robbins." Meredith stood there and told her. Jo was touched. She had never had anyone except the people here give her a choice. Jo knew what she was going to do. "Yes. Do it. He broke my heart but even though there will be tough feelings, I know he is the best pediatric surgeon. Plus Dr. Robbins would probably be busy with fetal surgery." Jo was confident she could do this. Especially for Meredith and her kids. Meredith had tears in her eyes. She hugged Jo and thanked her. "You Josephine Karev are my person." With that Meredith walked off with hope Ellis would be okay with Alex here. If he does come here. Later that night Amelia and Maggie took the kids for dinner at Chuck E Cheese and ice cream at orange leaf. She sat on the kitchen counter and swung her feet at the ground. She finally decided to build up enough courage to call him. As the phone rang, she breathed deep long breaths to stay calm. "Hello. Who is this?" Meredith was petrified. That voice sounded just the same as it did 10 years ago when they were roommates. "Izzie." "Meredith" "Yeah. Is Alex there?" "No. He is out playing with the kids right now. I thought he said he didn't want you to call because if you did he would leave me. Are you trying to get him to leave me?" Izzie's voice was full of anger. "No. But I need Alex. I need him to come back for just a little while. Derek and I's daughter is very sick. She has cancerous mets on her right kidney and it's spreading. Alex has the lowest morbidity rates on surgeries like this. I need his help." Izzie could hear the pleading in Meredith's voice. " Let me go get him" Meredith heard Izzie yell for Alex and she told him he had a phone call and he needed to take it. Also that it was personal. "Hello?" That out of breath gruffy voice she always heard at the other end of the line. " Alex." She said seeing what he would say. "Meredith? Why did you call, do you want to rip my family up?" She knew he wasn't angry. She could hear worry in his voice. "Alex, Ellis has cancerous mets on her right kidney and they are spreading fast. You are the Pediatric surgeon with the lowest morbidity rates on these procedures. I know what you are going to say. I already talked to Jo and she is okay with it. Will you come?" "Yes. Mer I will come. I'll be there ASAP and I've realized that I can still have a family with my kids. They can stay the summer with me in Seattle and the school year with Izzie. We have already talked about since I heard Bailey still doesn't have a head of Peds yet. I still love Jo and I can't live without her. I'll go pack and I'll be there soon. Bye Mer." With that the phone call disconnected. Wow she couldn't wait to meet his kids. Alex is really coming back. She smiled at that. When she told Miranda that Alex was coming and wanted his job back, she couldn't help but laugh. She told her kids that Alex was coming back home and that they would get to see him. The kids jumped for joy. The next day at the hospital she found Jo at a lunch table by herself. "Hey. So I called and he did answer. Well actually Izzie answered and Alex should be here in 2 hours. I'm going to pick him up from the airport, so could you sit with Ellis till I'm back?" Meredith asked Jo. "Of course. Plus that gives me a little alone time before I see Alex. Thanks for telling me Mer." With that Jo got up to finish her last consult before going to sit with Ellis.
