CHAPTER 2: SOCIAL STUDIES
Disclaimer: I do not own Big Nate. All of the characters belong to Lincoln Peirce.
Just in case you were wondering.
Nate opened his locker. As usual, a heap of junk rushed out it.
"Nate, you are a slob!" said a girl voice. It was Gina, Brainiac, and one of Nate's arch enemies (the other is Mrs. Godfrey, who you'll meet in a moment).
"Gina, I will tell you something…" Nate replied, "I. DON'T. CARE. And plus, when I was actually not a slob, I hated it."
"Oh yeah! I believe it was April 27th 2007 (see link below)." said Francis.
"Well, I…"
RRRRIIIINNNNGGGG
"5 minutes to class!" Teddy said.
"Time to close my locker." said Nate
After about 4 and a half minutes, Nate rushed into class.
"Mrs. Godfrey, what is on our agenda today?" Nate asked.
"You know HouFE28?"
"Yeah, he's writing this story. What does that have to do with anything?"
"One of his other characters, Ben Seppinen, recently created The Legend of Civil War. So…"
RING
"You'll find out. Go to your seat."
Nate complied, not wanting to get a detention. Then Mrs. Godfrey said,
"POP QUIZ, people! Today's quiz is on the book Harriet Jacobs: Life as a Slave Girl! Begin!"
Nate looked at the quiz.
Question one: Whose daughter was Harriet sold to at the beginning of the book?
Dr. Flint
Mr. Bruce
Sans
Willie
The quiz went on like that. Then the kid behind Nate, Chester, whispered,
"Nate. What'd you get for question 2?"
Nate remained silent. Talking to him would've meant detention.
"Dude! I want the answer now."
Nate resisted the urge to answer. Chester got furious. He stood up and yelled,
"NATE! TELL ME THE ANSWER RIGHT NOW!"
Mrs. Godfrey caught Chester.
"We do not threaten people like that."
"You say that to me again, chubby, and you'll find yourself flat." Chester retorted.
"CHUBBY?!"
Mrs. Godfrey got angry.
"10 DETENTIONS AFTER SCHOOL. For now, sit in the back!"
Chester growled but obeyed.
Whew boy! Chester got it thought Nate as he completed question 20 of 25.
"5 minutes!" Mrs. Godfrey said as Nate finished the quiz.
Nate turned it in. He walked back to his desk.
"If you turned your quiz in, stand up." Mrs. Godfrey said.
Nate, Francis, Chad, Artur, Jenny, Dee Dee, Randy, Shelia, and Gina stood up.
"The rest of you have 4 minutes.
3 AND 1/2 MINUTES LATER
"30 seconds…29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22…" Teddy turned his quiz in. "14, 13, 12, 11, 10…" Chester turned his in.
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1, TIME!" Turn 'em in, people."
Only Marcus did so. He was ashamed.
"Thank you. OK, now, who led the Union in the Civil War."
Most people raised their hands.
"Nate! Who?"
Nate did not raise his hand. He thought about the question.
"I'll take 'Ulysses S. Grant' for $100."
"Wrong."
"WHAT?"
"I'm kidding! All right, all joking aside. Who was the general of the Confederacy?"
After about 10 minutes, Mrs. Godfrey said,
"OK, people, Dee Dee and Jenny will pass out your homework for today. It's due in 2 months."
"What is it?"
"You are to make a movie about the Civil War. It must be at least 10 minutes long. We will present these. If they are over 20 minutes long, then we will watch them some other way. Your outline is your guide. You will use it to make a title. Your rubric will show you what to do. Get started!"
They worked for 10 minutes.
"Before you leave today, I will hand your quizzes back."
As she handed them back…
"ARRGGH!" Gina said.
"What?" asked Nate.
"On the short answer, I accidentally wrote something that looked wrong. I got 24 out of 25!"
"Wow, Nate, you got a 25." Teddy said.
"WHAT?! How could he get a score higher than me?"
Then Gina attacked Nate.
"Gina, detention after school."
"But, but, but…"
Heh heh Nate thought.
RRIINNGG
"Have a nice day."
