*I still need OC's, so if you have some, send them my way, I want to give Jace roommates lol. Please and thank you. This chapter is sort of short. Characters will get more formerly introduced in the next one, which will take place in the school.
Chapter 1
Jace woke to the sound of screaming. It was shrill series of barks that seemed to attack from the thin wall he rested his drunken head on. His head lolled on his neck as his vision swam. Immediately he put his head in his hands to hide his bloodshot eyes from the sun that illuminated his trashed room. Empty food wrappers, liquor bottles, dirty clothes, and other assortments piled around and on his bed. He banged his fist furiously at the wall as the screaming continued.
"Shut your fucking dog up!" Jace growled as his head fell back into the bed.
From the sound of traffic through his open window, and how bright the sun was, he figured no one was in the apartment next to him. That's probably why the dog-well fox was barking to the top of its lungs. Jace wasn't one to involve authority in any situation and his neighbor was a pretty cool guy who kept to himself. So when Jace noticed him sneaking out a beautiful red-orange fox within the early mornings and late night for walks, he turned the other way and minded his business. The fox, Suki, with the most glossy green eyes was never this rowdy. Even during his house parties, like the one he had last night, the fox was as quiet as a mouse. What could possibly be ticking her off this early in the morning? Did his neighbor forget to feed her or something? Jace put a hand through his red hair before it got caught in the tangles. Frustrated, he turned on the TV as he checked his phone.
A soft headache echoed in the front of his brain as he turned his phone's brightness down. His eyes widened. He had text messages and social media alerts, but he was focused on the large pop up that took up most of his screen.
緊急警報! A travel ban has been placed on all traffic in and out of Chuo. Anyone trying to cross in or out of the province will be detained. If you or anyone you know has traveled through Chuo in the past ten days and feel ill, please make sure to quarantine yourself from others. You can report yourself, or someone else's symptoms at this hotline:
Jace turned to the TV. There was a news reporter standing on the side of the highway as a streamline of cars inched behind one another one as they were being forced to turn around.
"Today we have reports of people a three night riot that has taken place in Chuo, one of the most popular wards of Tokyo, Japan. The government was trying to keep these riots under wrap until videos began to leak online of the attacks. Apparently there is a new illness spreading in the ward that has people dying rapidly, and there are reports that people are so angry, they are attacking each other. We even have reports of violent cannibalism- "
Jace rose to his feet in a panic. Chuo bordered the ward he was resided in and was only maybe about forty minutes away from his actual flat. They were safe right? Whatever was in Chuo was being contained? Surely. He thought about going out into the living room and waking up his roommates and whoever crashed in their apartment last night from the party. Jace hesitated, they would surely panic though, and he would need to down three Tylenols before he could handle that. Jace kicked through the trash in his room to look out the window. To his surprise military personnel were walking in the streets. Doing some type of patrol? He had no idea. There was a military Jeep parked at the end of his street. Guys in green jumpsuits and armored helmets were in a loose line along the sidewalk. They didn't have on the same attire or weapons as the older man shouting orders at them. He must've been some type of sergeant and the younger guys must have been some type of rookies or trainees, Jace thought. When the older man stepped away, Jace stuck his head out the window.
"Hey!" Jace yelled at them.
They all blatantly ignored him except one guy, who turned back to face him. The man pushed his sunglasses atop his buzzed light brown hair. His piercing green eyes leveled with Jace's coldly. They were intimidating, but there was no way Jace was going to show that. He cleared his throat and cracked a smile.
"Top of the morning to ya boys, can you please tell me what the hell is going on?" He shouted.
"It's classified." The guy shouted back, a slight European accent that Jace couldn't pin down was woven in his words.
"Oh come on. You bunch of low grade military bastards can tell me something right? I'm sure the old serg, will just slap your wrist. I mean if the problem's in Chuo why are you all here?"
The guy looked at the old apartment complex, looked at Jace and his unkempt appearance, sucked in his teeth, and shouted back coolly. "Just worry about staying in your shitty apartment, before we come up there and make you-."
"Felix." The guy beside him interrupted. "Civilians around these parts are not worth it, let's just finish this stupid specialized training and go."
"Oh, so you're not even official military right? How stinking wonderful, so then you really can tell me what's going on! Hey you! I'm talking to you!" Jace yelled as they kept their backs to him.
Felix shrugged, flashed Jace a devilish grin, and then proceeded to ignore his shouting as he continued. Jace cursed as he began to grab random trash from his room and throw it at the trainees outside. He mostly missed by a margin as the backyard swallowed everything he threw, but that didn't stop him from yelling profanities at them. His anger edged on by his headache, and the blubbering fox next door. His tirade stopped when a loud bang rattled his door.
Jace withdrew from the windows, blue eyes wide as the door rattled on its hinges again. Who was that? His roommates would simply just knock. And the partygoers? Did anyone else spend the night? Did anything of them come from Chuo? Jace's face darkened. Were any of his party goers sick?
He closed his eyes as he tried to recall if anyone was coughing or vomiting caused by anything other than alcohol last night . Another bang, and his door creaked. Jace grabbed a half empty bottle of Everclear and approached the door slowly. Another bang. Then a moan. It sounded desperate, maybe even fearful.
He wanted to stupidly yell out who was it, but he had a bad feeling in his stomach. There was no point in hiding, as the door looked like it wouldn't survive another series of bangs. Swiftly Jace opened the old wooden door, weapon ready and froze. It was a short, petite girl, not much taller than his own sister, and something was terribly wrong with her. Her bright pink choppy hair was the only thing colorful on her, as her skin had a terrible grey hue to it. Drool dribbled from her lips as she reached out for him with a slow, jerky movement. Sick was the first word, to run through Jace's mind, not deadly. Until he saw her eyes, a milky white viell had completely covered where her eyes should've been, which were rolled to the back of her head. She let out a low moan, and this time it sounded much more clear and animalistic. Before Jace could react, she lunged at him with the strength of men three times her size. The two tumbled to the floor, as Jace let out a cry of pain.
