Chapter 2
"That is a planet I don't want to visit again any time soon" Obi-Wan said as their ship left the atmosphere of Ondara. A small planet on the Outer Rim.
Qui-Gon's eyes glinted with humour as he remembered their time on the planet. "I quite enjoyed it."
Obi-Wan grimaced, "of course you did. I didn't"
Qui-Gon had to stop himself from smiling. "Maybe you'll listen to me next time."
"I did listen to you. That's what got me into that mess in the first place." Obi-Wan retorted.
The Jedi entered the cockpit of the starship and Qui-Gon let his amused smile disappear behind his usual, calm façade.
"We'll be entering hyperspace in 20 minutes" the pilot informed.
"20 minutes?" Obi-Wan asked surprised, he was expecting the jump to happen almost immediately.
The pilot nodded. "There's an asteroid field in our way, if we jump to lightspeed it could tear the ship apart."
"Can't we just go around it?" Obi-Wan wondered.
The pilot waved a dismissive hand "Trust me, we'll save at least an hour if we go through the field and then jump to hyperspace on the other side." He threw Obi-Wan a cocky grin, "I've seen the maps, the field isn't very dense. I'll get through easily."
Obi-Wan looked doubtful. He wasn't surprised to see that his Master shared his doubt.
"It's not that we doubt your skill," Qui-Gon said, "but the locals on Ondara warned us about the asteroid field."
The pilot just laughed. "Please, you believed those fairy tales?"
"Fairy tales?" Obi-Wan inquired.
Qui-Gon remembered that Obi-Wan hadn't been there when the people told him about the asteroid field, so he explained. "They told me about ships that go missing in the field. They say, there are creatures in the field that lead ships astray."
The pilot rolled his eyes. "Hideous beings that suck the life out of you. Yes, I've heard the stories. But like I said," he turned his gaze to Obi-Wan, "they're just stories. So, don't worry about it, kid."
Obi-Wan scowled, he was 16 for Force's sake. That hardly made him a "kid" anymore. He was about to say so but Qui-Gon spoke before he could.
"Perhaps, but how do you explain the missing ships?"
The pilot shrugged. "Ships go missing all the time out here in the Outer Rim. I didn't think Jedi believed in curses and myths."
Qui-Gon frowned at the pilot. "We don't, but we do know how to heed a warning. We're in no hurry, go around the field." To emphasise his point, Qui-Gon folded his arms across his chest making him appear unmovable.
Obi-Wan knew the stance well. And this certainly wasn't the first overconfident pilot his Master had had to put his foot down with.
The pilot gave them a deadpan look and turned his attention to the controls of the ship. "Count on Jedi to take the fun out of things" he mumbled under his breath.
Just as he finished calculating coordinates for the hyperdrive a red light began to flash on the console.
"What is it?" Obi-Wan asked curiously.
The pilot frowned. "A distress signal."
"How far?" Qui-Gon asked.
The pilot shrugged again. "Not very. A few kilometres" He turned to face the Jedi. "You want to check it out?"
The pilot didn't sound surprised, he seemed annoyed, Obi-Wan thought. Which was unreasonable, if someone sent out a distress signal, it was only right to answer it.
Qui-Gon noted the pilot's tone as well. "Yes. It is our duty to help those who ask for it." The pilot rolled his eyes but headed towards the signal without another word.
"There" Qui-Gon said pointing out the view screen.
Obi-Wan followed his line of sight and spotted a ship in the distance. It looked to be a medium sized transport. Obi-Wan hoped it was carrying cargo rather than passengers.
"What do you think happened?" Obi-Wan asked.
"I don't know" Qui-Gon admitted, "I sense a warning in the Force though."
"I sense it too" Obi-Wan said.
"Then we must remain mindful." Qui-Gon noted and Obi-Wan nodded his understanding.
"Yes, Master."
The pilot glanced from one Jedi to the other. "Do you want to check this out or not?" He asked impatiently.
Qui-Gon ignored the pilot's tone. "Can you dock on to the ship?"
