"Nix, where are the passports?"
Lily was rummaging across the room frantically, clothes strewn here and there, and her suitcase wide open.
Phoenix rolled her eyes from the front of the TV screen. She'd already finished packing, being the responsible one of the two. Lily was doing it last minute, waiting till midnight to do it.
"For the last time, I've packed them in the backpack. Stop being so forgetful"
Sighing, Lily tugged at her dark red hair, which hung till her shoulders.
"I'm just a bit unprepared is all. You're the one who normally forgets stuff"
Crunching on a bag of crisps now, Phoenix wagged a finger at her best friend from the couch.
"I never forget important things, mind you. I didn't forget to pack my toothbrush or my books or my iPad or my plushie. And I definitely didn't forget to pack the tuxedos"
"Why are they so important anyway?", Lily muttered, currently struggling to stuff her own plushie - an adorable teddy bear, which Lily had so imaginatively named, Teddy - into the overflowing suitcase.
"It's specifically mentioned on the tickets that we are to wear them for some event"
"It's not like we're gonna attend the event anyway! Weren't we planning to go our way with the itinerary?", said Lily, sitting on her suitcase to close it.
"Yeah", Phoenix said slowly, "But, you never know! And these are tuxedos, Lily! We can use them for all kinds of stuff!"
"But they're so layered. I already sweat enough", Lily pouted slightly and fell dramatically onto the couch beside Phoenix.
"Yeah, yeah. But still, they're cool"
Lily hummed and stole the crisps without Phoenix paying attention.
For some time, they watched the TV program - One Tree Hill - in silence. Then Lily opened her mouth to say something.
"Yes, I packed the laptop and all the pen drives", said Phoenix, as if she was reading her mind.
"What about the chargers?"
"Honestly, Lily! I'm much more organized than you are. Stop doubting my packing capabilities", Phoenix wagged a finger again, searching around for the crisps. After finding them in Lily's hands, she took a swat at her head and took the bag back.
"The passports?"
"I swear to God", Phoenix craned her head upwards and put a hand over her heart, "You asked me a thousand times and I've told you a thousand times that they're in the backpack."
"Right, sorry. It's our first trip together and I want it to be perfect"
"Spoken like a true best friend", Phoenix grinned, "Have I told you how much I love you lately?"
"Yes, Nix", Lily ruffled the dark hair, "You tell me when you wake up, when I get you lunch and before we go to sleep"
Laughing, the both of them settled into a silence again. After a few minutes it was broken again.
"Why'd you cut your hair? When did you even find time to cut your hair?", Lily ran her hand through Phoenix's black hair again, which was now quite short.
"I cut my hair when you were too busy watching Young Sheldon. And as to the why... I plan on wooing some girls on our vacation", Phoenix touched the edges of her hair unconsciously, "Thought this would help my chances"
"Aw, Nix. You know girls wouldn't care about the looks. People care about what's inside that head of yours than what's on top of it", Lily ruffled the hair once more, and then added, "But to be honest, I don't think there's anything inside your head either"
Huffing, Phoenix grabbed the closest cushion and whacked the redhead repeatedly over her head.
When they finally calmed down, Phoenix spoke up.
"How do you think our dear parents will react? If they see us going on vacation?"
"They'll be surprised, that's for sure. And definitely won't be proud of how we got the tickets. But maybe they'll be happy that we can finally do something we've always dreamed of", Lily smiled and threw an arm around Phoenix.
Throwing her arm around Lily in response, Phoenix smiled as well, "I suppose you're right. Two people who use pen drives instead of Netflix 'cause they're too broke, couldn't possibly be going on a cruise halfway around the world. And most definitely not when they're only fresh out of uni"
They grinned and sighed contentedly, pulling each other close.
"This is just the beginning, Nix", said Lily, "I can feel it"
"Yep. Our dreams are waiting for us", Phoenix nodded, "And we'll be chasing them forever"
"And we'll be young like this, forever."
