Chapter 1:
Forest sat on the top of the fence. He breathed in the night air. It was cool and the breeze felt satisfying. Stars twinkled in the sky. Forest suddenly caught the scent of mouse. He looked around for the small creature. He spotted it near the edge of the woods and prepared to leap down from the fence.
"Where do you think you're going?" A voice scolded him. Forest sat upright and looked around. Approaching him, was a silver tabby cat.
"Nowhere." Forest meowed neutrally and started grooming himself casually.
"You were going to go into the woods, weren't you?" The cat asked as she narrowed her eyes.
"No!" Forest protested. "I would never think of doing that! You know me better than that, Sasha."
"Good." She meowed. "Imagine what Karen would say if you did." Forest rolled his eyes at the mention of Karen. Karen was the annoying fur-ball that was his sister.
"Who cares what Karen says?" Forest asked.
"Excuse me?" A voice asked, offended. Forest turned around. Karen was in the twoleg garden, staring at them.
"Karen!" Forest hissed. "Stop spying on us!"
"What?" Karen meowed, shocked. "I would never spy!"
Forest looked at Sasha and they both rolled their eyes.
"Come on, Sasha." Karen meowed. "My twolegs just poured more food in the bowl." Sasha nodded and followed Karen into the twoleg den.
"Goodnight, Forest." Sasha meowed.
"Goodnight." Forest meowed and Sasha padded into the den. Forest sighed. He glanced one more time back at the woods, and the mouse that seemed to be calling his name.
"Forest!" It called. Wait- mice can't speak cat! Forest turned back around and looked into the woods.
"Forest!" A voice called again. Forest was confused. Who was calling his name?
"Who's there?" Forest called out.
"It's me, Berrynose!" Berrynose? Who was Berrynose?
"Who are you? Forest asked him. A cream colored cat stepped out of the woods. He seemed familiar somehow. And he had a weird accent.
"Is Feather around here?" Berrynose asked Forest.
"Feather is my mother." Forest meowed and narrowed his eyes suspiciously. What did this cat want to do with Feather?
"I know." Berrynose meowed casually.
"How do you know that?" Forest asked this unusual cat.
"Do you really want to know?" Berrynose asked Forest and then yawned.
"Yes." Forest meowed. He was getting impatient. He wanted to know who this cat was, and why he wanted to see Feather.
"Berrynose?" Forest heard his mother's voice as she padded along the top of the fence. Forest turned toward her.
"Do you know him?" Forest asked Feather. She ignored him.
"It's been so long since I've seen you." Berrynose meowed. "Both of you."
"Berrynose, why are you here?" Feather asked him. "What if Poppyfrost found out, again?"
"She won't." Berrynose meowed. "I just wanted to speak with my kits."
"Berrynose," Feather meowed, as if she was warning him of something.
"Let him speak." Forest meowed. He wanted to know who Berrynose's kits were. Feather stared at Forest nervously.
"You and your sister are my kits." Berrynose meowed. Forest stared at him, confused. He guessed that Berrynose and Karen kind of looked alike. Except Karen had Feather's blue eyes. But he couldn't believe that this cat, this cat who had a weird accent and was extremely skinny from lack of food, was his father. Forest turned toward Feather.
"Is this true?" Forest asked her, his voice full of emotion. Feather nodded. Forest lept down to the side of the fence where Berrynose was.
"What do you want with me and Karen?" Forest growled at him. He didn't like Berrynose. He had ignored him for a long time. And now, he shows up out of the blue wanted to talk to Forest and his sister.
"I've seen you staring into the forest," Berrynose started. "I know you want to live there."
"Hm." Forest meowed.
"I'm one of those wild cats you hear about in stories." Berrynose meowed. Forest wasn't surprised. He was almost exactly the way Sasha had described them. "I want you to come live with me and be a clan cat, in ThunderClan."
