Jack just couldn't resist coming along to talk to Mooney's neighbors. Or at least, that was part of her reason for riding with Gibbs - the part she was willing to share. The other part was, well, it was who she was riding with. Practically alone time for the drive, a chance to talk to him without anyone watching. Maybe.
When Gibbs dismissed his team for the night, stating that they' all get caught up in the morning, he grabbed takeout on the way back to his place. Take out for two.
Over some takeout, they discussed the case and the weird neighborhood, and Jack tried to ask about how he was feeling, only to be directed to work and the case.
Of course, his decompression and conversation with Jack only lasted until he had to go get Torres and Palmer out a holding cell. And dammit, he was disappointed. When he went to handle rescuing the agent and medical examiner, she went back to her apartment- to sleep until work.
Jack was glad to watch the interrogation, it was weird as hell to watch Gibbs stab the box to see if it invoked a reaction. It was also nice to have him immediately leave the room to get her opinion. She was invested, going with Gibbs to arrest the Dentist, to be there to see it go down. She always finds the way he handles arrests, interrogations, and takedowns sexy. So damn sexy. Not that she'd tell him, or anyone else, that.
She quite enjoys sitting on the edge of his desk, practically taunting him. He wouldn't let anyone else lean or sit on his desk, but he wasn't telling her no. Responding to Jack and his agents, Gibbs said "Love is blind", which immediately had Jack standing and turning around. "On that note, I am out. For a scotch and a shower." That scotch, little did the agents know, would be shared in the basement of their boss' basement in a few hours. Post shower and changing at her place.
Of course, scotch with Gibbs lasts longer than just a few short minutes.
"Hey, Jack," Gibbs pours her a little more scotch and gives her a half smile.
"Thanks, Cowboy. I hear some of your team is already thinking about Halloween costumes." He responds with just a shake of his head.
"When do you think Vance will be back?" He changes the topic to one he knows she has thought about.
"Well, I think he should be back in the next week or so, we will see." She sounds unsure of her answer, and that is something Gibbs isn't used to seeing from her. She seemed tired, and maybe she'd had a little much to drink.
"It's gettin late, Jack." He tilts his head towards her, like that sentence was a question. "Do you need a ride home? Did you want to stay the night?" She tries to hide her excitement at the last question, he doesn't yet know that she has more interest than just office flirting and friendship.
"Uh, I might be better off stayin the night." Gibbs nods, acknowledging the pause she started with, but for a different reason. He thinks she's a little uncomfortable with the idea.
"I'll go get sheets out and put them on the guest bed. I'll meet you in the living room." As they both walk up the steps out of the basement, he leaves her in the kitchen, and heads up to the guest bedroom. "Make yourself at home, Jack."
While waiting, Jack wandered his kitchen. She had been to Gibbs' house a few times, the first time they met, for poker nights, for midcase conversations and decompression. They were friends, but staying the night when it is just the two of them, that was uncharted territory. She damn well wanted to be in the same room as him, but didn't want to lose one of the people she trusted most in D.C. Jack continued to pace around and between the living room and kitchen, and was so stuck in her thoughts she missed Gibbs coming back down the stairs.
"Jack, go get some rest. I'll walk you up." When they got to the guest room, he explained the labeled drawers on the dresser. "Pretty much every agent on my team has slept over at some point. And Abby. For some reason or another." Jack could see tape labels that had been written on and crossed off or shared drawers. She could see names like Ziva, Tony, Tim, Abby, Ellie, and more all on these drawers. "If you need something to sleep in, there's extra clothes in that bottom drawer, although I'm sure Ellie and Abby wouldn't mind if you borrowed any of theirs."
"Might be an awkward situation to explain to them later." That was all she could think to say.
"Again, extra clothes in the bottom drawer, left side." Pulling open the drawer, Jack could see clothes that didn't match the style of the agents she knew. She wondered if those clothes belonged to previous exes of his, or to an old friend.
"Thanks Gibbs." He just nodded and shut the door as he walked out.
"See ya in the morning."
Jack tossed and turned and thought about the clothes and the drawers labeled for his agents. She thought about if he saw them as his kids, he sure seemed to. If so, how did he see her? Was she the same, was she different? Was he interested in her, were they supposed to only be friends? She really couldn't tell what it was he wanted.
Gibbs thought throughout the night if he was making the right choice. He was just glad he had put a physical barrier between them. She was in another room. She was probably sleeping. She was gorgeous, and even though he was interested in her, he felt she deserved better. No, he knew she deserved better. He'd been around the block and through how many failed relationships. He wouldn't be putting her through that. He was going to swallow his feelings and pretend they never existed, if it meant having her in his life, if it meant being her friend. He resolved to get her to join him for coffee and breakfast at the diner in the morning. As friends. He just had to keep that in mind, friends, nothing more.
