Zelda approached Danny quietly, but not so quiet that she would accidentally surprise him. She sat at the stool beside him. "Sorry if I took too long."
Danny shook his head and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, "You were checking on your boyfriend, it's fine." He said, "How's he doing? How's his hand?"
She shrugged, "The healer said that the hand is just about useless now. He seems to be taking it pretty well, however." She said, "While not as debilitating, he's had worse, I suppose... Sort of..." She handed him the blanket, "Here, the innkeeper said you can keep it."
"Thanks..." Danny draped it over his shoulders. "I'm… sorry that happened." He started, "I feel really bad."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I guess I scared his horse and it stepped on his hand. The injury was kinda my fault."
Zelda sank, "I see… well, he doesn't seem to hold anything against you, if that helps."
"Sort of…" Danny pulled the blanket around him tighter. "I just wish there was something I could do."
Zelda sighed, "Help him with the pain, I suppose. It's all we can do until we can get him to a healer in Hateno…" She watched him for a while, noticing the strange, black, rectangular tablet in his hand, "May I ask what that is?"
Danny glanced at her, then looked back to his phone. "Um... It's uh... It's a communicator... Back home, we call it a cell phone. If someone was on the other side of the world, I'd be able to talk to them if they had another one... But since I fell into that river with this thing in my pocket..." He sighed, "It won't turn on anymore..." He chuckled lightly to himself, "Should've just let Sam buy me that waterproof case..."
"Sam?"
"Yeah, one of my best friends…" he nodded, "She offered me a case that would make this water-resistant. But it was an expensive case, so I told her not to worry about it and got this… cheap piece of crap instead."
"Oh- a girl named Sam."
"Yeah- Samantha. We just call her 'Sam', it's a nickname."
"Can't say I've ever heard of that before." Zelda hummed and took a deep breath, "Um… I talked to Link. I told him you could stay with us until we find you a way home..." She said. "He said he could use the help anyway since he can't use his hand."
"Right... yeah, no problem..." Danny took a deep breath and let it out slowly, sinking and staring at the fire.
Zelda couldn't help but to notice his eyes watering. She shifted slightly, "Do you think there's anything we can do to save it?" She asked.
"His hand?"
"Your cell phone." She shook her head, "If you can communicate with your friends or family, maybe they can try and get you home. I can imagine you're scared and that you're worried about them."
Danny half-smiled and wiped his eye, "No... Thank you, but... It's shot... I don't know how long I was in that river, but it was enough to soak this thing completely..." He explained. "I appreciate it, though..." He sank, "No, even if it did work, I doubt there are any satellites around here to pick up a signal. I'm in a totally different world... A whole other... Dimension. And... These can go international... But not interdimensional." He explained, "It wouldn't catch onto a signal. The only thing this would be good for, even if it did work is to look at the pictures I've taken." He shook his head, "I'm probably confusing you..."
"Not at all... I am actually keeping up. If anything, Link may be a little confused, but only with the interdimensional talk. So..." She shook her head, "Just to be sure I'm retaining this information properly. You need a satellite to collect a signal from one device, and send it to another? Yes? Would that be a tower?"
"Could be." Danny shrugged. "But that's not the same as an actual satellite. A satellite is something shot into space into the Earth's orbit-" he glanced up at the sky. He paused and looked back up, his eyes widening.
"What is it?" Zelda looked up, suddenly concerned.
"Your sky..." He breathed, "I don't get to see all these stars in my world..." He marveled.
"Really? Why's that?" Zelda sighed with relief.
"Light pollution. Our cities have so much going on, and so much light, that it makes it hard to see all of this." He said.
Zelda smiled, "If you think this is beautiful, you should see the sky when we're away from the stable." She said.
Danny took a deep breath and laid back to look up at the sky. "I could stare at this for hours..."
Zelda smiled at the wondrous expression on his face. Then she took a deep breath and stood up, "I should turn in for the night... I'll pay for a bed for you whenever you're ready."
"Thanks, but..." He sighed, "I think I'll stay out here." He said, "I think I just need some time to myself..."
"Are you sure? It's no trouble and I'm sure you could use the rest."
"It's fine. Thank you."
Zelda gave him a warm smile before heading inside. Danny stared back up at the sky and thought for a while. "Sam would love this..." He breathed. The last time he had seen Sam was school. They had plans to have a graduation party and Danny had gone to the Ghost Zone to find gifts for her and Tucker. However, on his way to visit Clockwork, Skulker had attacked, shoulder bashing Danny off-course into an opened portal that led to this... He wasn't sure how to describe it. Beautiful, maybe, but more... Mythical... Medieval...? It felt like a world set in a fantasy genre video game or movie. 'Fantastical' felt like the right word, but it felt weird at the same time. His stomach turned, realizing how much trouble he was going to be in with Sam when he saw her again for not meeting up with her when he was supposed to. Not to mention Jazz. Tucker was sure to be upset, too, but far more forgiving.
"Can't sleep?"
Danny jumped, turning around to face Link, who wore an old shirt and a pair of pants that seemed a little short on him. His hand, once again held to his stomach, was so bandaged and casted that it looked as though he wore an oven mitt on his right hand. "Uh- no, not really..." He glanced behind him to the tent-like building, the lights inside were dimmed. Everyone had gone to sleep. When he looked back to the sky, he realized the moon was in a completely different location, "How's your hand?"
Link grunted, "Couldn't sleep because of it..." He paused, "Think you can use your ice magic on it again? That actually helped before."
"Uh... Yeah, sure." Danny sat back up.
Link knelt by him and held out his hand, removing some sort of thicker cloth around it and leaving only the bandages that seemed to be keeping his hand together. Danny winced at the sight, "Geez, it's so swollen..." He frosted it over. "Um... Back home, whenever someone injured their hand, doctors recommended holding it up to your chest. At about heart level. It was meant to ease the swelling- and by extension, the pain."
"Huh..." Link held his hand up to his heart, "Like this?"
"Um- I kept my hand here:" he held up his own hand to the opposite shoulder, with his firearm across his chest.
Link mimicked the position, "Hmm... And how does this help, exactly?"
Danny shrugged, "It's been a while, so I can't entirely remember. Something about blood flow. Less blood rushing to the injury, and eases the swelling, I guess..."
Link thought for a while and sat down on the ground next to Danny, "Thank you..."
"Yeah, sure... It... It kinda was my fault it was injured in the first place." He sank.
Link shrugged, "You couldn't have known I was there." He said, "I'm sure you weren't even planning on ending up here."
Danny shook his head. "No, I had a party I was supposed to be going to. I was only out because I was looking for a couple of gifts for the other two people it was celebrating. But I got shoved through a portal and..." He shook his head, "They must be worried sick..." He buried his face into his hands.
"Your... Family?"
"And my friends. Well- they- I guess they might as well be family at this point." He said. "My... Girl... Friend..." He struggled with the words, "We're not... Together-together... Yet..." He started awkwardly.
"Friend that is a girl." Link clarified.
"Yeah... Um- she's the kind of friend that gets mad if you haven't taken care of yourself and calls you an idiot if you do something stupid that jeopardizes your well-being." He chuckled, "She called me a dumbass for burning my hand once while I tried cooking for them. I'm not allowed in the kitchen anymore."
Link chuckled, "She almost sounds like Zelda."
"Really? Zelda doesn't seem that way." Danny asked.
"Well, because right now, I could lose the hand." He said, "And we just left the castle, so she's stressed out, tense, and worried. Wait until she's relaxed. She really let me have it once because I took out a silver Lynel by myself. And got shot in the process."
Danny cringed, "An arrow, I'm guessing?"
Link nodded, "She didn't even know I was going out to fight it. But it was wandering too close to Zora's Domain, so I had to do something about it."
Danny nodded, then he paused, "What exactly is a Lynel?"
Link blinked, "Oh... You must not have them in your world... Lynels are big, angry, lion-faced horsemen." He described, "And some colored Lynels are a lot stronger than other ones. Silver just happens to be second strongest." He explained.
Danny nodded, "Okay... That's kinda..." He wanted to say 'cool' but seeing as these were incredibly dangerous creatures and one even shot Link, he decided otherwise. Not to mention the fact that he's used to these things being the stuff of fairy tales and not really existing. Running into one of these things while he was stuck in this world was a very real possibility. "Terrifying, actually..."
Link nodded, "So... It's been bothering me... Do people in your world normally have ice magic? And whatever that white magic was when you fell?"
Danny froze, "What do you mean? Magic?"
"Well, you have ice magic. That's a given..." Link showed him his frosted right hand. "But... When you crashed into the mountain. You flashed white. That was the flash that scared my horse and caused this. I'm just curious." He said.
Danny took a deep, nervous breath, then let it out slowly. "Right… magic… um…" he began fidgeting, his shoes rubbing together and his hands opening and closing in the dirt at his sides.
Link watched Danny's composure change completely, "I see... Well, if that's a sensitive topic, I won't pry. It's just- not many people around here are capable of magic. Lately, the only person I know who is, is Zelda. And that's... Holy, sealing magic." He said, "It's just... Interesting."
Danny gripped his upper arms and leaned forward, avoiding eye contact. He couldn't exactly tell Link that what he saw wasn't a big deal. He at least owed it to him, seeing as it's cost him his hand. He sighed, he wished Sam was with him. "It's... Complicated..." He finally spoke, "I rather we had more privacy."
"Are you sure? You don't have to tell me if it bothers you that much. I understand if it's a secret."
"No- you should know... At least I think you should... It's because of my... 'Magic' that you got hurt. And considering you could potentially lose your hand… you deserve an explanation. Just... Not here."
Link watched him for a moment, "Alright. If you insist..." He said. "Thank you for your help, though."
"What?" Danny looked up at him. "What did I do?"
Link lightly waved his hand, "The pain has been manageable thanks to the ice magic and your advice. The healer just wrapped it, told me the hand was useless and told me not to sleep on my right side."
Danny scoffed, "I mean, definitely don't sleep on your right side." He confirmed, "I'm just telling you what doctors told me last time I injured my hand." He said. "I just wish there was something more that could be done to save it."
Link shrugged, "I mean, there's always a fairy... but those are life-and-death remedies. And the fountains are hard to find sometimes." he shook his head, "I'm not going to make you worry about it, so please... it's fine..." he took a deep breath, "So what'd you do?"
"What?" he looked up at Link, only to see that he was gesturing to his hands, "Oh! Uh... Woodshop- we... Woodworking class. Wasn't paying attention and a knife went across my palm." He opened his left hand and ran his right pinky finger over the scar running across it.
"Looks like you caught a sword by the blade." Link commented, "The scars running over your fingers."
Danny let out a nervous laugh, "Yeah... Okay, I did, but my parents think it was woodshop. In the off chance you meet them, and they ask, it was woodshop, and not a sword, okay?" Danny sank, "No, if they knew what really happened, I'd never hear the end of it…"
"Overprotective?" he asked.
"Something like that. It's my… 'extracurricular activity' they wouldn't be so happy about. I don't know if they'll be mad at me, or be scared for me… or what… but… They just- can't find out." He said, "It's… about the 'magic'."
"Is it… forbidden magic, or something?"
"Or something. It's… complicated."
"I see…" Link nodded, "You have my word. Should I ever meet your parents, of course."
"Thanks."
**So they're hitting it off pretty well. RR guys and stay awesome!**
