"Morning Helena." Emery smiled. "Looking forward to today?"
"Hell yeah." Helena said while sipping a cup of tea. "Wish Julius would hurry it up."
"He's only going to be five minutes Helena." Emery said.
"I know, but it feels like an eternity." Helena groaned.
"Morning you two." Eliza smiled." You sure everything is packed up and ready for Julius?"
"Yeah." Emery and Helena said in unison.
They heard a knock on the window. Eliza went to the door and answered, it was Julius.
"Hi Julius." Eliza said.
"Hi Eliza, are they ready?" Julius asked.
"They are, and eager." Eliza giggled.
Julius walked into the house.
"Right then you two, get your stuff, and we'll get going." Julius smiled.
Emery and Helena said goodbye to Eliza and the trio teleported to the MASI entrance. They walked to an empty utility cupboard, near the entrance, where Julius placed Emery's and Helena's stuff, and then locked it with his ID card.
"Right then let's go get some breakfast and a cup of coffee." Julius said enthusiastically.
The trio walked to the canteen and each got fry ups and a cup of tea, except for Julius who settled for a cup of coffee instead.
"So today you will have your aptitude test, which is our equivalent of an entrance exam." Julius explained. "I will go over what you need to do to pass your test."
0815 Tuesday 27th May 2025
"So we need to remember the law of equivalent exchange, which requires us to have an object of equal mass or more to the object we want to create." Helena said.
'Yes, that's right." Julius replied.
"And the sacchions are what do the magic, we just control them." Emery said.
"Yes, controlling the sacchions energy output and their frequency is what defines magic." Julius replied. "Also not that the conservation of energy law dictates that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it is merely changed from one state to another. Like, a group of sacchions can become a graviton or photon, but you can't create either without sacrificing the sacchions. You have all that you need for the aptitude test, speaking of which, we should be going to it now."
1153 Tuesday 27th May 2025
Emery and Helena attended and completed the aptitude test and were in gymnasium one sparring. Emery narrowly avoided a high energy ki blast from Helena, then used self acceleration to gain on her and performed three self accelerated punches and a kick. Helen doubled over then swept her leg around Emery's ankle and pulled it from under him, knocking him to the ground. Emery retaliated by clapping his ands, creating a shock wave that knocked Helena to the floor.
"Shall we call it a day Emery, we've been at this over an hour and I think we drew." Helena puffed.
"Yeah let's call it a day." Emery said while wiping the sweat off of his forehead.
"Well, that was interesting, to say the least." Julius smiled.
"Jesus Julius, how long have you been standing there?" Emery gasped.
"Long enough, I have your test results, you both passed with flying colors." Julius said. "So, let's go and see your new accommodation."
The trio collected Emery's and Helena's stuff and teleported to their new house. A three bedroom house in Carlisle, a short drive away from MASI. There was a Nissan Leaf parked on the drive, and the house itself was beautiful.
"Wow, this is amazing Julius." Helena said while jumping up and down like a five year old.
"Shall we go inside." Julius smiled.
"Uh, yeah." Emery and Helena said.
The trio walked inside the house and started with the living room. There was a forty inch LED TV on the wall, a leather suite and a matted glass coffee table. In the kitchen there was all new appliances, a dish washer, washing machine slash tumble dryer, a fridge-freezer and an electric stove and oven.
"You do need to do a shop to stock the fridge, freezer and cupboards, but in the meanwhile you can eat at MASI." Julius explained. "Right, let's go and see the bedrooms."
The trio walked upstairs to the bedrooms, noticing the new bathroom on their way up, a power shower, and a bath.
"Right. the keys are in the doors, the one with the car keys on is Emery's the spare, which will be Helena's, when she get's her driving license, is on the coffee table downstairs." Julius explained.
Emery and Helena went to their doors and unlocked them, inside was a desk with a thirty-two inch TV with a dock for tablet computers, on the double bed was a phone and a tablet computer. There was also two chest of draws, a wardrobe and a bedside table with a mirror slash alarm clock on it.
"Please set up the phones and pads please, as you will need them for your job and study. The phones work on any network in range so you should have no problem in terms of coverage." Julius said.
Emery and Helena quickly set up the phones and tablets and met Julius downstairs.
"So, we're off back to MASI and Emery, you're driving." Julius smiled.
The trio got into the car and Emery drove them to MASI.
"So the phones, as you might have noticed contain MASI's own firmware, but the base system is android so android will work on them just fine, and the tablets are Linux Debian based, they are already configured to work at MASI, so you should just connect to our network when it's in range. Your ID card is your key to MASI buildings and it's network so when pads connect to the MASI network you will need your ID cards and your password that you set up on the machine. The phones can wireless hotspot and have a VPN to the MASI network, so should you work from home, your phone is your key." Julius explained.
1240 Tuesday 27th May 2025
Emery pulled up in a staff parking space outside MASI. The trio got out of the car and walked into the main building, towards the canteen.
"Emery, I have and issue I have been trying to resolve for some time. We need a new resource builder, but currently, it is fueled by water, which makes us reluctant to use it because of the water bill. Do you have any suggestions on how we can resolve the issue?" Julius asked thinking he might be asking too much of Emery.
Emery got out his pad and opened a drawing app.
"Right, so if you take a look at this I can demonstrate how we can solve the problem. I have a possible magic sequence that could, theoretically, provide storage and convert any type of waste, or anything for that matter, into water. That way we wouldn't have to change the principle that the resource builder works on. You with me so far?" Emery asked.
"Yes, continue." Julius replied.
"The plan would be to attach the sewer line and create a pit that garbage can just be thrown into and a hydraulic press that pushes the waste into a pit that is a pocket dimension of say a hundred kilometers cubed. The question is can we make such a device that can do this?" Emery explained.
"Yes we can, follow me." Julius smiled.
The trio walked down the northwest corridor to the resource builder.
"Right, if you lay on that bed you should see a head up display or HUD, and the resource builder will build the device from your mind, but beware that the resource builder can only simulate what you understand, listen to the resource builder it won't lie to you, but if your gut is nagging at you, listen to it as the resource builder doesn't have a gut to listen to." Julius explained.
"Right then, let's see." Emery said as he laid down on the bed.
The HUD showed up as Julius said it would.
"Oh, so this is how you do it." Emery grinned.
"So, it is telling me I need to build a CASTE device, but what is it." Emery asked.
"Cast assisting sacchion technology embedded device, it's a device that can use stored magic sequences as well as assisting a warlock to activate magic." Julius explained.
"I see, well the CASTE is done, now for the pit. Oh, I got an error, not enough space on materialization platform, but it says that I can build it manually on site, can I do that?" Emery queried.
"Yes you can, I can help with that, I can guide you anyway." Julius replied.
"Sweet, I'll build the matter converter and pocket dimension unit then." Emery smiled.
Emery set it up to build and it took about thirty seconds to materialize. Emery picked up the device.
"Okay, so, I got the resource builder to demonstrate the hydraulic system and the schematic of the pit and I think that I can do it Julius." Emery said.
"Great, lets go then." Julius said.
The trio walked round the MASI building to the spot where Julius said to build the pit and Emery got on to his hands and knees. He built the pit in stages.
"Pit, three meters by ten meters by ten meters, steel combination foundations, hydraulic press, three-point-eight meters by three meters by two meters, place conversion and storage unit at the back at the bottom, concrete shell with opening three meters by one-point-five meters, and finally water outlet to the room Julius specified on sub level three, connect the sewer line to the pit, and connect the three phase power. Done." Emery said.
"Great." Julius smiled. "Let's test it."
Julius got one of the refuse bins and tipped it into the pit. The hydraulics worked flawlessly and Emery's pad register a matter conversion in the pit.
"Okay so how do we fill it as I doubt the council would just take on a new contract." Emery sighed.
"Don't give it a second thought, we'll go and see Zak." Julius smiled.
1310 Tuesday 27th May 2025
"So, you built the pit, and you want to know if we can get a contract from the council for refuse disposal, and you want to build a new resource builder, am I right." Zak asked, raising one eyebrow.
"Yes Zak." Emery said.
"Well you're in luck, we happen to have the councilor on our books, and good books at that." Zak smiled. "If Emery comes with me to the council offices, while Helena and Julius designs and builds the new resource builder. How's that?"
"Great." Julius said. "Let's go Helena.
"Not so fast Julius, I gave you that job as a punishment as it was not an easy feat, but that said, Emery and Helena have or will log some time in the resource builder, so I'll let it slide, this time since you have been working on it as promised. I suppose your punishment is served." Zak grinned.
"Yes Zak, thank you Zak." Julius smiled uneasily, ushering Helena out of Zak's office.
"Apologies for that, but you see, Julius has a habit of starting unsanctioned projects and I hope that you and Helena don't follow suit." Zak said sternly.
Emery and Zak drove to the council offices for Cumbria district council and sat for quite a while in the waiting area until a women seemingly in her thirties turned up and invited them into an office.
"So, Zak and I are already acquainted, my name Abigail Saunders, I am chief councilor for the Cumbria county council, how may I be of assistance?" The woman said.
"Hi Abigail, MASI have developed a refuse recycling system that converts any matter into water to power our resource builder and we would like to know if the council is interested in selling refuse disposal to us." Emery explained.
"I see, and how much do you want to charge for this refuse disposal." Abigail asked.
"How much is your current contract?" Emery asked.
"Currently eighteen pounds per ton or about four million pounds per year." Abigail replied.
"How does one million pounds a year sound Zak?" Emery asked.
"Fine by me, Abigail?" Zak said.
"It's done, do you want me to send over the last few truck loads today?" Abigail asked.
"That'd be great." Emery smiled.
"Very well, have a safe journey." Abigail smiled back.
Emery and Zak left the council offices and Emery drove them back to MASI.
1345 Tuesday 27th May 2025
Emery and Zak had just got back from the council office's and found Helena and Julius in the canteen eating their grub. Emery and Zak got their meals and joined them.
"So all you have got to do now is build your CASTE devices." Julius said. "How did the council go?"
"Very well." Zak said. "A one million pound contract was agreed between us, so it couldn't have gone any better."
"And we've got the last few truck loads being routed to MASI." Emery commented.
"Great." Julius said.
"So what are the rules on CASTE devices Julius." Helena asked.
"Um, there aren't any to my knowledge, Zak?" Julius said.
"No, there aren't any, except nothing rude." Zak said.
"Oh okay, so, if I had a staff, Emery what do you want?" Helena asked.
"A pen, something that doesn't run out of ink, if it's magic then I just create the ink with my magic, simple." Emery replied.
"Hmm, interesting. Sounds to me that you're both going down the CACEO route for CASTE devices." Julius commented.
"CACEO?" Emery asked.
"Oh that's cast assisting crystal embedded object, it's what we used before CASTE devices. Back in the old days." Zak explained.
"Oh I see." Emery said, finishing his grub.
Everyone had finished their food and moved on to the new resource builder to build Emery's and Helena's CASTE devices. Helena went first and built her staff then Emery built his pen. The group moved to gymnasium one to test the new devices.
"So, to use a CASTE device, in both your cases, you just have a single button to press to start a sacchion surge, then you just think of what you want to do. Begin." Julius said.
Emery and Helena started by charging their CASTE devices. Emery took the lead by clicking the pen and creating a hard light sword out of it. Helena use fortifying magic to reinforce her staff against beatings and the battle began. Emery charged at Helena, taking swipes at her staff. Helena effortlessly blocked Emery's attacks and brought her staff about, whacking Emery in the ribs and knocking him sideways. Emery quickly recovered and created a shock wave with his sword knocking Helena backwards. She stumbled, but quickly retaliated with a massive ki blast. Emery just stood there and took it. Not even dazed he charged at Helena, using his sword as a pivot point he double roundhouse kicked her with self acceleration sending her flying across the gymnasium into the wall with a thud. Taking a moment to recover, Helena had an idea, she used self acceleration, took her staff and ran into Emery full force. Emery did a somersault before landing flat on the floor. While Emery was down Helena charged five ki blasts and fired them at Emery, they seemed to have no effect on Emery at all. Emery had got up off of the floor and Helena started to charge at Emery. Emery started to kick the air from side to side, and he started lifting off about two meters from the ground, he flipped over Helena and shock waved her from behind.
"Okay, time." Zak said over the intercom.
Zak walked down to the gymnasium entrance and gave feedback on the sparring session.
"Okay, that was a good sparring session. Helena, you demonstrated quick recoveries when knocked down. Emery, you demonstrated effortless absorption of energy based attacks and an inventive use of hard light. Well done both of you." Zak praised.
"Emery, I was interested by your flying technique, how did you do it." Julius asked curiously.
"Light board kick I think I will call it, it is a hard light wall that I kick myself up." Emery beamed.
"Oh, Emery, there is a favor I'd like to ask of you, we would like a holographic training system installed in the gymnasiums, but we currently don't have the technology to have one, since you seem to have a proficiency in hard light techniques, maybe you could take the project on board?" Zak asked.
"Yeah, sure Zak." Emery smiled. "I can use the new resource builder to build it, um, how soon do you want it."
"I'll give you the day." Zak smiled.
"Cheers Zak." Emery said. "All I need."
"Okay, I'll leave with Cairne then." Zak smiled. "Oh, and I need you both to write papers on the resource builder and refuse disposal systems, If you need help, consult the database, I'll leave some notes in your personal inboxes on how to write papers."
"Cheers Zak." Emery and Helena said.
The trio took the lift down to sub level three where the new resource builder was built. Emery lied down on the bed and the HUD appeared. Emery started with the holographic emitters and their magic sequences, then moved on to the base system, choosing Debian Linux as the operating system. He designed the system to work with the security mainframe, so that the safety protocols tally up with battle privileges, and also wrote a patch for the security mainframe. The computer core was massive, there had to be a processor for every holographic emitter, to cut down on size he gave each holographic emitter and on-board logic unit with a processor, RAM, and south bridge. The base system also had to have ten dedicated processors. Next he worked on the fiber optics, taking the design of the gymnasiums in mind. Then he designed the chassis and motherboard. Finally he designed the graphics card which had to accommodate a monitor and one-hundred-and-fifty holographic emitters.
"Right, this might be overkill, but here it goes. I have designed holographic emitters with a processor, south bridge, and RAM, ten processors for the motherboard, two fiber optics per holographic emitter and a graphics card to support that and a monitor. Oh and the processors are five gigahertz with thirty-two gigabytes of RAM each, and both systems have ten-thousand yottabytes of mirrored solid state storage." Emery explained.
"That's some serious spec's." Julius said. "But if you're happy with it, let's build it."
"Okay then." Emery said. "Twenty minutes, that's what the resource builder reports for build time."
"Alright, I'll go and prepare both gymnasiums for the installation, could use the schematics though." Julius said.
"Not a second thought, here you go." Emery said holding out his pad for a file transfer.
"Cheers, see you in twenty minutes then." Julius said while tapping his pad on Emery's to complete the transfer.
1427 Tuesday 27th May 2025
Emery moved the last of the components onto the porting trollies and he and Helena walked them to gymnasiums one and two. Emery went to gymnasium one, and Helena went to gymnasium two. Emery arrived in gymnasium one and Julius was waiting for him.
"Hey." Julius said.
"Here it is." Emery beamed.
"Ain't she a beauty." Julius smiled.
"She will be when she's installed." Emery laughed.
"Won't be long now." Julius said.
Emery and Julius got to work, installing the emitters and fiber optics first.
"We don't need to worry about the order we plug them in as the software will work out which emitter is which when we boot her up." Emery explained.
Next Emery set up the chassis and started connecting everything up.
"Okay, she's ready to be booted." Emery said, while pressing the on switch.
After a nerve racking ten minutes the system booted to the OS and started probing the emitters. After cycling through all the emitters a garden appeared, which was the test program. It was a success.
"Okay, it all looks to be working well." Julius said.
"Yeah, and the hardware is holding out too, quite well actually. Statistics say that the resource usage is very low, lower than what I was expecting, so all is good." Emery said, locking the maintenance hatch up. "It's voice controlled so you can create scenarios just by voice without accessing the maintenance hatch. Also, it can interface with a pad wirelessly, so you can design it on your pad too. Maybe I should have designed it so that you could use the holosystem to display a keyboard for scenario programming, but I can write that in later from home in the meanwhile."
Emery and Julius went to gymnasium two expecting to set up the second holosystem, but Helena had already done it and was designing an interlink program between the two gymnasiums so that programs could be shared between them automatically.
"Well, haven't you been busy." Julius smiled.
"Very." Helena replied while finishing up. "Well, I have just written an interlink program that syncs scenarios across both gymnasiums, so we don't have to worry about routinely syncing them manually."
"That's great." Emery said.
"If you'd like I can give you two a hand on writing those papers for Zak, we got nothing better to do for now." Julius said.
"Okay, you up for that Helena." Emery asked.
"Okay, lead the way Julius." Helena replied.
Julius took Emery and Helena to the office opposite Zak's office, where there were ten workstations to choose from.
"Okay you two your ID cards and passwords." Julius said.
"What's our password." Helena asked.
"The passwords you set up on your tablets this morning." Julius replied.
"Oh, okay." Helena said while typing her password.
"Right, so create a new writer document with LibreOffice, and also, open up the database to get those helpful notes Zak left you." Julius said.
"So why do you use LibreOffice Writer over Microsoft Word as Microsoft Office is supported by Linux now, especially Debian?" Emery asked.
"Because it's free, and this is the setup we have used for yonks, so it would mess us around to change it now." Julius explained.
"Oh okay, fair enough." Emery said as he browsed the database for the notes that Zak had written for them.
"So, in a nutshell, what Zak wants you to do is relatively simple, he wants you to write a report on the design specifications for the garbage disposal, and the new resource builder, and why you think it is a good addition to MASI's resources." Julius explained
"And because it's a paper, I suppose we need to add in the scientific's of the magic sequences?" Emery queried.
"If you can, then yes, but Zak was going to do that for you, but that said, Zak is a very busy man, so if you can do it, he will greatly appreciate it." Julius replied.
"Okay, can't be too hard can it." Helena said.
1745 Tuesday 27th May 2025
"Ugh, glad that's over." Helena sighed, saving her work and Emailing it to Zak.
"I think I'm going to use the resource builder software to write my papers from now on." Emery sighed as he did the same.
"That's lazy Emery." Julius laughed.
"Yeah, well, bullocks to it, at least the resource builder would do a better job of it, and it would dynamically build it too." Emery groaned.
"I suppose it would." Julius said.
"Anyway, let's get some grub, I'm starving." Emery said.
The trio moved on to the canteen, where Zak was waiting at a table.
"Ahh, hello." Zak smiled. "I'm just reading your papers, well done, and I see that Emery did one for the holographic system too."
"Hey Zak." The trio said.
"Yeah, I thought you might want that too." Emery said.
"Well I'm pleased to say the least." Zak smiled. "I see that you got some help too, Cairne."
"Yes Zak." Julius replied, pretending that he didn't know what Zak was talking about.
"I saw you in the office opposite mine helping Emery and Helena with their assignments." Zak said, raising one eyebrow.
"Really, well, it is their first assignment, so I thought that a bit of friendly advice wouldn't hurt." Julius said, realizing that he'd been rumbled.
"I suppose not." Zak smiled. "But anyway, good work both of you."
Zak got up and left the canteen, leaving Emery, Helena, and Julius to get some food.
1850 Tuesday 27th May 2025
The trio had eaten and Emery drove Helena home and had just got back for medical training with the Doc.
"Ahh, Emery, how are you today?" The Doc asked.
"Great thank you Doc, you?" Emery asked back.
"Not too bad thank you, so, are you ready to start your medical training?" The Doc smiled.
"Yep, born ready." Emery beamed.
"That's the spirit Emery, so today we will be going over some first aid related stuff and then some paramedic level stuff, sound good?" The doc said.
"Great, let's begin." Emery smiled.
Doctor Valery walked Emery through basic first aid, then moved on to the more advanced paramedic level knowledge. Emery taking notes throughout the session.
"This vial contains epinephrine, or adrenalin, which is used for?" The Doc asked.
"Epinephrine is used during defibrillation and for anaphylaxis. The dosage for resuscitation is one milligram every three to five minutes, and for acute anaphylaxis, it is fifty milligrams or zero-point-five milliliters of one in ten-thousand intravenous solution." Emery replied like he swallowed the textbook.
"Very good." The Doc praised. "What about morphine?"
"With morphine, you would administer it based on the severity of the pain the patient is suffering, preferably, you would administer an analgesic first. The dosage is two-point-five to ten milligrams intravenous." Emery replied.
"Well done." The Doc beamed. "That's all for today. Have a safe journey home Emery."
"Thank you Doc, you too." Emery smiled.
"Oh and Emery, can you and Helena pop by tomorrow for biometrics please?" The Doc asked.
"Sure thing Doc, no problem." Emery replied. "Caio."
