A/N: I do love a good brooding vampire.
All mistakes are my own.
I do not own FSOG.
I lived a life and now I was ready for it to end.
Walking the cool streets of San Francisco, I felt my trench coat flapping in the foggy night. I glanced around the streets which used to be bare but were now filled with towering buildings, and people. Horse-drawn carriages had changed into horse-powered engines. Clothes changed, technology became something of a phenom, and food was now a delicious luxury. The only thing that stayed predictable were people. People somehow wound up the same. Some kind, others selfish. Leaders were still wolves in sheep's clothing, and the poor masses still clung to their word like gospel.
I'd seen it all.
I saw kingdoms fall, and democracies start. I saw my family die off and lived long enough to create a new one. Throughout this journey, my zest for life never wavered. Until the last thirty years or so. My brother had found his mate. A lovely woman who used to be a school teacher. They were happy and had been for the last forty years. He too had grown weary until he met her. Then she was turned and his life became joyous again. I was happy for him, but envious as well. Now the two traveled the world. I asked him one night over glasses of cognac why he would want to travel again.
"She's never seen the world. She was from Alabama. Moved to New Orleans on a whim. She had dreams of seeing Paris and Rome. The minute I met her, I knew I would be the one to take her those places."
"But it won't be exciting."
"It will. Because her happiness will make me happy."
And it was true. His brother, who was known in the 1700s as a lothario of sorts was now happily settled with a former school teacher. If anyone of their friends from the old world ever discovered this, they would expire on sight. I chuckled thinking about it. Coming to a stop, I looked both ways before crossing the street. He nodded at a woman who passed him by, ignoring her gaping at me. That was one perk of becoming an immortal.
Well, that's what they said, anyway.
The blood would transform you into an even more beautiful person. If you already had unique color eyes, it would only highlight it. Your skin would look irresistible to humans, and your body just as appealing. My youngest brother Elliot used it countless times to his advantage over the last several hundred years. I was always uncomfortable with attention I felt I didn't deserve and becoming a creature of the night never changed that. So, I always looked the other way. You're probably wondering as to why I am having this intense soul-searching discussion?
Well, it's simple really. I was planning to kill myself tonight. It's quite difficult to kill a vampire. Stakes are often involved. And even then, I've seen people resuscitated from that. But the one thing a vampire can never escape is fire. I lived my life to the fullest. I accomplished what I wanted and saw things I never thought I would. But nothing mattered if you didn't have anyone to share it with. I left letters for my staff and my brother. He would be angry, but Kate would help him to see my point of view. Coming to the end of the street I sighed inhaling the fresh San Francisco air one more time before turning around. I walked almost the entire city today. I lived over in the land's end but I wanted to see everything once more. Since I never tire, and all I have is time, I thought why not take a walk down memory lane? Walking past Kezar stadium, down the Haight, and onto Post, I took in the quiet streets marveling at the evolution of man and time. Just as I was about to make a left, I heard a scream, that quickly became muffled. My head snapped to the right and I could hear what sounded like a woman begging for help. A plus side to being an immortal was the superhuman strength and speed. My eyes immediately took in the street, making sure I saw no one out before I sped to where the sound came from. My eyes narrowed at the sight in front of me. A man trying to take a woman against her will. Still one of the most atrocious crimes to ever commit. I would gladly take his blood before the night was out. Without a thought, I flung him into the wall making sure to keep my back to the frightened woman. I could tell that she was at her wit's end, as her heart was racing, and her blood smelled fresh. As if a wound had just been opened. Keeping my voice low, I made sure that he saw the red of my eyes and the elongated fangs. I smelled urine on him, and it gave me satisfaction to see him lose all of his facilities.
"You think a good man is supposed to rape a woman?" I asked darkly. The man swallowed before shaking his head.
"No, I-"
But I didn't let him finish. I broke his neck before he could scream and took long pulls from his body. I moaned at the taste quickly draining him dry. Once he was nothing but dry bones I let him drop before wiping my mouth. I turned and saw the woman was passed out. Glancing down the street I saw another man, and judging by his crippled walk, and wide-eyed gaze as he wobbled away from me I knew he was an accomplice.
Hmm. Two gallons tonight, I thought in excitement. Before he could make it into the main street, I grabbed him and took him near the trash can. I snapped his neck before draining him as well. I made sure to dump both of the bodies in the dumpster before coming over to the woman. Even though she was passed out she moaned. Thinking fast, I picked her up staring down at her slight form. She was very beautiful up close. It was rare he saw a woman who was a natural brunette. He liked that her hair was unusually long. Her long lashes and curvy body made her an anomaly to him. Women such as her weren't praised as they used to be.
"I wonder what color your eyes are," I said softly into the wind. I tried to probe her mind only to realize that it was blocked. My eyes widened in surprise. I was always able to read minds.
Why couldn't I read hers?
Making a decision, I opted to take her home. My suicide mission could wait another day.
Just one more day.
Ohh. This is getting good. I love it! Leave me a review and let me know readers!
