Chapter 2! This chapter is a lot less sickfic-y because honestly I had started writing a sickfic when I started this story but decided to make it more than that while writing the last chapter so along I couldn't completely ignore Nathan being sick it is not a focal point. Anyways, hope you enjoy and I DO NOT OWN ONE TREE HILL OR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. Let me know what you think :)
Haley's alarm went off at 6:30 the next morning and she groaned, turning to snooze it but she quickly decided against that idea because she had a lot to do before school. Haley pushed herself to get out of bed and walked into the bathroom to take a shower. She looked in the mirror and smiled, she was pregnant. With Nathan's kid. It was a dream come true.
About 20 minutes later, Haley was in the kitchen trying to figure out what to make for breakfast. She decided on a smoothie but the blender was pretty loud so she should wake Nathan first. "Hey Nate," she whispered, sitting down next to him on the couch. "I have to go soon but I'm making a smoothie and I'm going to make you some, okay?"
Nathan yawned, opening his eyes slowly. "Morning, beautiful," he smiled groggily. Haley kissed his hot forehead before handing him a glass of water and his prescription.
"Take this and I'll be back with breakfast in a minute." Nathan coughed his compliance and Haley went back to the kitchen to make the smoothies.
"Haley, how do you think everyone is going to feel when you tell them about the baby?" Nathan asked, accepting the smoothie from her.
"I don't know," Haley admitted. "I hope our friends will have our backs because not everyone is going to like it but all I care about is that we are both happy." Haley began to pack up her backpack and put on her coat. "I've got to go to school but if you feel any worse, call me immediately and I'll come home. I already called us both out sick for work so I'll be home right after school, during lunch if I can. Make sure to drink a lot, stay on the couch as much as possible and take your medicine. Feel better, bye!" She began to open the door.
"Wait, Hales." Nathan called.
"What? Do you need something?"
"I love you." Nathan said, "And breathe, oxygen's important for the baby."
Haley laughed, "Love you too, weirdo. See you later." Haley closed the door behind her and walked towards the car. She didn't really like to drive because she found it really stressful, but she wanted to be able to come home during lunch. Just then her phone rang. Brooke.
"What's up, Davis?" Haley answered.
"Tutor wife, where are you? You missed morning cheer practice!" Brooke exclaimed. The edge was taken off her frustration by the obvious concern in her voice. Shit, Haley had completely forgotten that Brooke had added extra morning practice in this week.
"Brooke, I'm so sorry! It completely slipped my mind. Listen I gotta go so I can drive to school but I promise I'll explain later," Haley said, apologetically.
"You're driving? You hate driving, especially with other people in the car. Why can't Nathan drive?"
"Nathan is staying home today. I have a lot to tell you, Brooke, but I really don't have time right now. I'll see you at school," With that Haley hung up. Her heart was pounding. She was seventeen with her husband upstairs sick in their apartment with no one else there as she went to tell all their friends that she was pregnant alone. She knew it would be okay, as long as she had Nathan, she had everything she needed, but it was still a lot. It was something that most people would talk with their moms about, but her mom was off in an RV who knows where? Haley loved that her parents were living out their dreams but a part of her really wanted them here. They have a teenage daughter and they left her.
Without even realizing it, Haley arrived at school. She was so lost in her own mind the entire ride that it felt like no time had passed. Haley parked far away from the entrance, she really needed that walk time to gather herself before heading to class. However, her quiet time was interrupted by a hand on her shoulder.
"Hey Hales," Lucas pulled her into a hug. "Are you really-"
"Luke, I want to take to everyone together, okay?" Haley cut him off. Lucas nodded, he wanted his best friend to talk to him. He wanted to be there for her. This had to be so hard, to walk into high school pregnant, knowing how judgmental everyone would be. He wanted to be there for his little brother, too. Hold on.
"Where's Nathan?" Lucas' voice was boiling over with anger. He swore to God, if he had left Haley to handle this alone, he'd kill Nathan. Haley sighed, she had wanted to just have this discussion once, with everybody, but if she didn't answer Lucas he was going to drive over to the apartment, intending on killing her husband.
"No, Luke, he didn't leave. He is really sick and really worried that people are going to think badly of him for not being here when the news spreads." Lucas sighed and relief and put his arm around his sister in law. He was going to be the best uncle this kid could have, other than Keith of course.
Haley bounced her foot impatiently, waiting for the bell to ring. Once that bell rang, it would be lunch. By the end of lunch, all her friends would know she's pregnant. She had talked to Nathan and he had convinced her that there was no reason for her to rush home during lunch when it was the perfect opportunity to tell everyone. Of course, she knew that but she had really been hoping Nathan would need her so that she would have an excuse to stall the news. It was pretty early on to tell people, she was only 5 weeks pregnant, it's not like she was showing yet. But she knew that she needed her friends to know what was going on. This wasn't going to be easy.
Haley was the last one to the lunch table and she was pretty happy about that, she didn't have to wait for anyone else. "Hey Haley, is Nathan here? Whitey's going to flip at practice when he realizes his star player is missing, no offense, Luke." Peyton commented as Haley sat down.
"No, uh, Nate's got pneumonia so he'll be home for a few days so, well, he told me to tell you guys our news without him," Haley stuttered. Everyone was staring back at her, some with confusion but some like they knew where this was going. "I'm pregnant. And Nathan took it great so don't think that he is hiding and I know we are really young but we are also already married so we are pretty excited and I understand if your freaking out because well same but I really need you guys to support me and-"
"Haley," Brooke grabbed her arm to cut off her rambling. "We love you, and Nathan, and we aren't going anywhere, okay?" Haley started sobbing. That was exactly the response that she wanted. She had been so scared that they would think less of her or not want to hang out with her. Brooke pulled her into a hug. "It's ok, tutor mom," she whispered. That just made Haley cry harder, tears of joy at the idea of being a mom. Sure, she was scared but she loved kids. Soon everyone at the table gave Haley a hug. Lucas took out his phone and texted Nathan, congrats on fatherhood little brother. Then they all went about lunch as normal, laughing and enjoying each other's company as it should be.
5 minutes before lunch ended, Lucas stood up. "I'm going to go talk to Whitey."
"Why?" Brooke questioned, looking up at her boyfriend.
"Because if I know my brother, and I do, he is going to show up for practice Wednesday, saying he just had a cold and is fine for the game Thursday and I'm not letting that happen." Haley couldn't help but smile, she loved how close Lucas and Nathan had gotten and that they looked out for each other.
Haley was never one to wish that the school day would end but during 9th period history she was just begging for the bell to ring. Brooke had completely understood that Haley wouldn't be at cheer practice, in fact she had told her not to come before Haley could even mention it. Finally, the loud bell dismissed them, and Haley practically ran out of the room. God, she missed her husband.
Nathan opened the door to the apartment before Haley even pulled out the key to unlock it. "Hey Hales," he smiled.
"Nathan, what are you doing? You should be resting!" she scolded.
"Oh yeah, I might drop dead opening the door," he bickered sarcastically. "I'm fine, Haley…so I got a congratulations text from Lucas, how'd everyone else feel?"
"Oh, Nathan, we have the best friends in world. Our baby is going to be spoiled by all of them!" Haley's eyes watered again at the memory; she couldn't have asked for better. "I was already getting some people staring at my stomach by the end of the day but I don't even care."
"Are you sure they weren't staring at your chest, Hales? I mean you are really sexy," Haley could tell he was feeling at least a little better just by him getting his flirtatious nature back. She smiled and hugged him, Nathan had been a dick when she first met him and sometimes she did still worry about how many of the girls at school had slept with him but she also knew there was no one else she'd rather have by her side.
"Come on, Nathan. We all know that you're the one who gets checked out in this relationship. I understand why, my man looks damn good on a basketball court," Haley kissed Nathan and the sweet kiss quickly turned into a heated make out session. Nathan gently led Haley to the couch, laying on top of her. "Nathan, we have to stop," she laughed.
"Why?" Nathan whispered, slightly out of breath.
"Because we already have a little miracle on the way, don't you think sex now is kind of overkill?" Nathan was laughing to now as they sat next to each other. This girl was his everything. Well, except the baby, of course. Nathan began to cough, clearly in pain, and Haley jumped up to grab a water bottle out of the fridge. "I told you that you should have been resting!"
"Babe, it's a respiratory sickness. Yeah, I'm going to have a cough for a while and yeah, I'm exhausted even though I've done nothing all day but I'm fine," Haley shook her head. He literally just described being not fine and then insisted that he was.
"I picked up your work for you," she sighed, handing him the water bottle. She pulled out a folder of working and he all about spit out the water he was drinking.
"Damn. In one day? It is a very good thing I married my tutor," Nathan smiled, looking up at Haley. He had never done well in school before he met her, although he was still far from an honors student, he had a solid B- average and that was certainly better than the D he had before.
Two days later, Nathan was planning on going back to school. Before the alarm had a chance to wake him, however, he was woken up by the sound of someone throwing up. His own stomach rolled at the sound he'd been to familiar with the past few days but then it hit him. He was in bed, he was fine. Oh my god, Haley! He quickly got up and knocked on the bathroom door. "Haley? Can I come in?" His answer came in the form of another round of throwing up.
He opened the door and Haley looked up at him, "I'm sorry I woke you up," she whispered.
"Babe, I don't care about that. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, it's just morning sickness. Remember, the doctor said it would start soon."
"Haley, maybe you should stay home today. Just in case." Nathan didn't want Haley pushing through the day just for it to end up she is really sick and it's not just a pregnancy symptom.
"Nathan, I feel better now. Seriously. So now that we are both up how about we get ready and we can stop by Karen's for breakfast with our extra time," Nathan was definitely still skeptical but if this was what she wanted them he'd do it.
The six hours of class felt like twelve to Nathan who was tired out by 2nd period, though he wouldn't let Haley know that. Across the classroom, Haley was feeling the same way, wore out and just plain bad. If they had just communicated those feelings with each other, they would be home now. Comfortably watching a movie on the couch, maybe. Instead they were both in the gym, Haley being the least peppy cheerleader she's ever been and Nathan missing more free throws than he has in the last year while waiting for Whitey.
"Nathan, you're back," speak of the devil, "Sit down on the bench."
"Coach come on. I'm fine, let me practice so I can play tomorrow!"
"Nathan, pneumonia is not to be taken lightly, bench," Whitey demanded. He knew better than to fall for Nathan's bs after 4 years of coaching him.
"I have to play tomorrow, scouts are coming and I need a scholarship to college. Besides Haley's practicing so I have to stay this whole time, it might as well be productive."
"You can get a scholarship some other time. Now sit down and you can watch, just don't stare at Haley the whole time, I'm sure our guys could use your advising." Nathan sighed but knew better than to keep trying. However, despite what Whitey said, he did stare at his beautiful wife the majority of the time. At one point, Whitey sat down next to him.
"Hey coach, did you know I'm going to be a dad?" He asked so quietly and without taking his eyes off Haley that Whitey wasn't even sure he'd heard correctly.
"Congratulations, son. Treat her right." He responded. Nathan nodded as he smiled at Haley.
