"Are you heading out already?"
Amity aimed the question towards her boyfriend, who she woke up to find already getting dressed despite the sun not having risen yet. She wasn't really surprised. Poe was a go-getter. He was always on the clock. He was just too important to have a day off. Amity wasn't even bragging when she said this. Her boyfriend was literally more important than most people on the rebel base she lived at.
Amity sat up in bed, the warm sheet falling off of her. She didn't mind, she just wanted to know where he was going.
Poe winked at her. "Ain't no rest for the wicked, right?"
Amity rolled her eyes. "By wicked you mean the Empire, right?"
Poe, now fully dressed, sat back on the edge of their bed to put his boots on. "Of course. Or I may also mean my squad of pilots who do not know how to take care of their own ships."
Poe stood up again, and reached down to place a kiss of Amity's forehead. "See you for lunch?"
"Yeah" she told him. "Do you want me to meet me there? Or do you want to meet me at the first aid station?"
"Whichever" he told her, "I don't care."
Great. He doesn't care.
Poe moves from the bed to the mirror above their sink. Their quarters were small. There was a bed, a bathroom with a small shower and toilet, a sink that stood just outside the bathroom, two chairs, and a table.
Poe's quarters were bigger than when Amity lived alone. She didn't even have a bathroom. But that was years ago at a different rebel base.
Amity watched Poe brush through his hair. She admired how handsome he was. She was lucky to have him. She knew most of the girls on this base thought he was just as handsome as she did. Amity was proud that he was her man.
But Poe was a flirt. Every girl that flirted with him, he would have fun flirting back with. He would never take things too far, but Amity still wished he wouldn't give so many other girls attention.
"Can I count on you for dinner too?" she asked.
Poe sighed. "Can't promise anything."
Amity got out of bed and walked over to him. She hugged him from behind and placed a kiss on his back. He turned to face her, smiling.
"I'll try my best" he promised. He kissed her on the lips, short and sweetly. "Can I count on you to look this beautiful next time I see you?"
She laughed. "Maybe."
"Oh I hope so" he said, "then maybe we can finally figure out how to-"
His sentence was cut short by their door opening. Amity jumped, shocked by the sudden intrusion.
In the now open doorway stood Rebeka, one of the pilots, and Poe's new right hand woman.
"Running late, are we?" She asked. Her voice was deep, but beautiful. Almost as beautiful as her face. Pale smooth skin that seemed completely undamaged by the war, much alike Amity's tan, scarred skin. Rebeka has blonde hair, that also clashed with Amity's black wavy hair.
And blue eyes. Amity wished she had her blue eyes.
"Nah, just fashionably late" Poe joked with her. He then said to Amity, "See you at lunch, alright?"
"Alright..." Amity agreed, watching Poe walk off with the other woman. "Okay..."
Amity had a few friends. Not as many as Poe, but a modest amount. Most of them came from work. She work in the medical wing of the base, meaning she never had a boring day.
She met her friend, Frei, at the entrance to her work. She was standing outside, looking frazzled.
"Hey, are you okay?" Amity asked her.
Frei looked upset. "Did Poe tell you where he was going this morning?"
"Yeah. He was heading to work on some ships that were damaged."
Frei sighed. "Look, you didn't hear it from me, but Poe was called to a meeting with Leia . A secret meeting. Like, so secret I'm not supposed to know about it."
Amity pauses. "What?"
Frei said, "You should talk to him before he leaves."
"Before he-"
"He's going with her too."
Her. Rebeka. Frei was the only person Amity had ever voiced her concerns about Rebeka too. It was by accident. They had went out for drinks after a night of unending patients. Drunk, Amity couldn't help but voice her insecurity and worries about how close Poe was to that specific female pilot.
"He's going where?" Amity asked, finally.
"You should find him before he leaves and ask. Because I'm not even cleared to know."
Amity hesitated. Just a few hours ago Poe agreed to meet her for lunch? Now he's supposedly leaving on a mission? He wouldn't just lie to her.
"I'll see him later" Amity said, "He wouldn't leave without saying goodbye anyway."
Amity was only partly sure about it. But lunch came, and Poe didn't. Then dinner came, and Poe still wasn't able to be found. Finally, when it became dark, Amity went out looking for him.
She didn't find him, but she did find Rebeka. At least wherever Poe was, it wasn't with her. Never in Amity's life did she think she would want to start conversation with her, but today she did.
Greeting her she said, "Hey, Rebeka. Have you seen Poe?"
Rebeka didn't even look at her, instead she stayed focused on reading the documents she was carrying. "He's on a mission?"
Amity almost gasped, but didn't want Rebeka to think she was surprised by this. She was, but she didn't want Rebeka knowing she was out of the loop.
"Yeah...I know. But do you know where? Or when he'll be back?"
Rebeka sighed, now looking at her. "Don't worry, Amity. That's man's very...capable. He'll be fine."
Amity didn't like the patronizing look coming from Rebeka's eyes. "I know he's capable. He's my boyfriend."
Rebeka just laughed at her. "Of course you do."
Rebeka started walking again. Amity tried to stop her. "Wait-"
"Don't brother waiting for him" Rebeka teased, "I'll let you know when he gets here. He's not just going on a supply run. He's off for a map."
"A map to what?" she asked, brushing off the fact that Rebeka seemed to think Poe would visit her when returning before his own girlfriend.
"To who. And don't even worry about it. It's above your security clearance."
