Chapter 2

Jason looked up as he heard the front doors slide open. He watched as the foursome headed towards the parking lot. His hand instinctively reached for Elizabeth's arm and stopped her.

"Jason?" she whispered.

Franco and the kids stopped and looked at them. Jason couldn't find words as his eyes locked with hers.

"I….um….I just wanted for check on Campus and Trina. Are they holding up ok?" he asked so quietly that only she could hear.

Elizabeth turned to Franco. "You take the kids on to the car and I'll be right there."

Franco looked back and forth between the former lovers, unsure of he wanted to leave his wife alone with this man.

"I'll just be a minute," she reassured him one more time and he reluctantly headed towards the parking lot.

Looking back at Jason, Elizabeth made no move to free her arm from his hold, enjoying the safety she felt in just that little touch. "I think they are both doing as well as can be expected, all things considered."

Jason nodded, "I'm glad. If you," he paused, "if any of you need anything. If I can help in any way."

"I know exactly how to reach you," she finished for him. "Thank you for everything, Jason. In a way, you saved me tonight. I can't even think if something had happened to Cameron," she trailed off.

"Of course," he assured her, "I'm always here."

Elizabeth raised up on to her tip toes and gave him the briefest feather light kiss on his cheek and then turned and walked away.

Jason stood there for a moment, stunned. His cheek tingles where her lips had just touched it. As he watched her walk away, he unwillingly thought to himself, 'there goes my angel' and couldn't help the small smile that played on his lips. Walking towards his own SUV with those words playing back over and over in his head, he realized just how much trouble he was in.

Elizabeth climbed into the front seat next to Franco, unable to stop herself from looking back at Jason as they drove away. 'That's odd,' she thought to herself, 'Jason'smiling.'

"All good?" Franco asked as he steered the car towards their house.

"Yep, all good," she replied quickly turning her attention to the teenagers in the backseat. "You guys need anything? Food?"

"We're fine, Mom," Cameron assured her while Trina nodded in agreement.

"I just wanted to make sure. If there's anything, absolutely anything…"

"I know, Mom. I know"

"I was just so scared tonight. The thought that I could lose you – either of you."

"I think they get it," Franco cut in as he turned into the driveway.

Elizabeth for out of the car in stunned silence having been talked to in that tone. "Trina, why don't you go get cleaned up and changed. You can stay in the guest room tonight.

"Thank you," Trina whispered and rushed up the stairs, followed closely by Cameron who was still very worried about her.

This left Elizabeth alone in the living room with Franco since her other two boys weren't home tonight. She quickly turned on him. "What exactly is your problem?"

"I don't have a problem. You might, though. Still babying your son like that."

"What did you just say to me?" she asked angrily.

"I'm just saying, Elizabeth, that you might wanna back off with the overprotective mama bear routine a bit with Cam."

"And you," she spat, "might wanna reconsider telling me how to raise MY son."

"Well someone needs to help the poor kid out, since he doesn't have a dad. "

Elizabeth's face turned three shades of red as she got angrier with each word. She raised her hand and smacked Franco across the face, before she even realized what she had done. And with that, she turned and walked out the front door, slamming it in his stunned face.
