The sun was scorching on my skin I could feel it tingle under the heat. Even with my sunglasses I still squinted under its withering glare. Although it was January, it was unusually warm in the high 70s, nearly everyone was wearing shorts and t-shirts. I leaned against Phil's Subaru. Phil was Renee's - mom's - new husband. He was a nice enough guy and seemed to take this whole parenting thing in stride. He was currently loading the Subaru up with my twin's things. Renee, meanwhile was inside likely consoling my twin, it didn't seem matter that moving was HER idea anyhow.
I was the younger of the Swan twins. Isabella being the elder. I was the unexpected surprise seventeen years ago. While Isabella was unexpected but accepted, I was the curve-ball no one expected. Isabella came out healthy and screaming at the top of her lungs I'm told, but she was also holding an umbilical cord that wasn't her own. A quick ultrasound later and Renee was scheduled for a C-section. At 12:36 AM Scarlett Elizabeth Swan was born on September 13th 1987.
"Bella, babe, I love you both but we have a plane to catch!" Phil hollered, startling me from reminiscing
Moment later Renee came out with her arm around my twin. Isabella was pretty, even if she didn't think so. She stood at five feet four inches, her skin was ridiculously pale. The girl never seemed to tan, even when she burned, she was STILL pale. Her hair was chocolate brown and her eyes the same coffee color. She was fair and pretty, and she seemed to attract boys like honey despite her unusual interest in not being interested in boys. We all clamored into the Subaru and headed off to Phoenix International airport. The airport was busy, although this was a main thoroughfare so it wasn't too surprising but someone could get lost if they didn't know the ins and outs. As we approached our gate Renee turned to Isabella again, worry etched on her face.
"Bella, you don't have to do this…."
Isabella looked at Renee, no doubt worried about her. Renee was carefree and often harebrained. Phil was with her so she would be ok, but no doubt the same thoughts were running through her head.
"I want to go."
She was always a terrible liar, however she had been saying this so many times to Renee it almost sounded convincing. I adjusted the strap on my duffel bag, and made sure I still had my passport and my large sweater. I hardly went anywhere without a sweater, but I was still getting strange looks from passerby at my attire. I wore Wrangler jeans and my trusty hiking boots along with a long sleeve dark blue shirt. Sure it was hot now, but I'd be gloating once we arrived on the tarmac in Washington. I eyed Bella in her eyelet lace shirt and girl-jeans, she would be cold. I always said girl-jeans but they were regular jeans for girls, meaning minimal pocket space and protection. I usually splurged the extra money for the good jeans that would last me five times longer than Bella's jeans.
"Say hi to Charlie for me,"
"I will," she replied.
Renee then turned her attention on me, though we were mother and daughter, past experience kind of made things tense between us. She was my mother and I'd always love her, but the trust we once had was gone, and honestly I wasn't sure if was repairable.
"Take care," she said tightly.
I nodded. With that I lead Bella into the gate and we got on the plane. It was a four-hour flight from Phoenix to Seattle, then another hour's flight from Seattle to Port Angeles. I HATED flying. I was terrified of flying. One of my personal hells. I personally would have rather stayed in Forks with dad then board a plane four times. But Charlie, our dad, the ever being the peace keeper had guilt tripped me to spending a week with Renee and my sister in Phoenix over winter break. Then, for some reason, Bella got in her mind that she'd like to finish out her junior year in Forks. Bella hadn't made her dislike for Forks unknown, she hadn't been in Forks since we were fourteen. She had put her foot down and thrown a tantrum, deciding for herself - and apparently me - that we were to live with Renee full time. Needless to say I had thrown my own tantrum about moving, and it was decided that Bella would live with Renee full time and I would be with Charlie full time, then every summer we would spend two weeks in California with Bella and Renee.
Bella hadn't spoken to me since last night, no doubt she was mourning the loss of the sun, but I didn't need to remind her it was HER idea, again. She was a silent martyr, she'd make herself miserable in exchange for someone else's happiness. For instance this entire move was because she wanted Renee and Phil to have the honeymoon they missed out on. This way Renee would be able to travel with Phil, Phil was a minor league baseball player and was constantly moving and traveling.
As the plane descended, so did my stomach and I gripped the armrests of my seat in a death grip and closed my eyes.
When we landed in Port Angeles it was raining, no surprise there, rain was about as common as sunshine was in Phoenix. I was extremely happy to be back on land, more so to be back home. Where Bella thrived in the sunny, sprawling city of Phoenix, I thrived and flourished in the cloudy raining town of Forks. It was easy to spot Charlie, he was taller than both of us, standing at six feet tall. He stood out not only because he was tall, but because of his brown bomber jacket that read Forks Police Chief. He was the proud chief of police for our small hometown. He spotted us coming down the gate and smiled. It was a little awkward as he wasn't used to showing his feelings. Something that he and Bella shared.
"Good to see you, Bells." He said, catching Bella as she stumbled on the carpet. "You haven't changed much, how's Renee?"
"Mom's fine, it's good to see you too dad."
An awkward exchange, but there was nothing awkward about the hug he gave me. It was tight and warm.
"There you are little bear, flight ok?" He asked.
"Rather not talk about the flight," I said face turning green at the thought.
He chuckled and we went to the luggage turnstile all I had was my duffel bag, most of my wardrobe was still here in Forks. Where Bella had too many summer clothes and not enough winter clothes, I had the opposite. Luckily I have money saved up, and before the trip to Phoenix, Charlie took me to Seattle to get some summer wardrobe. There were a few rare days in Forks where the 'summer' wardrobe would be appropriate. I clamored into the backseat with my duffel bag as Bella helped Charlie with her bags into the back of the cruiser.
"I found a good car for the two of you, really cheap," he announced once we were strapped in.
My ears perked up at this. This was news to me.
"What kind of car?"
I could tell she was suspicious.
"Well, it's a truck actually, a Chevy." He responded.
If it was the Chevy I thought it was, it WAS the perfect car for Bella, sturdy was a good word for it.
"Where did you find it?" She pressed.
Ugh, one of the numerous things about Bella is that she couldn't just thank someone and accept what someone gave her. She always needed to question and press.
"Do you remember Billy Black down in La Push?"
"No" she replied at the same time I answered "yes".
Charlie looked amused from the rear-view mirror.
"He used to go fishing with us during the summer," Charlie prompted.
"With Jake!" I added.
Jacob was probably my best friend in the whole world. He was Billy's only son and we got on really well. I was more of a tomboy so I often spent time with Jake whether it was fishing, hiking, camping, or making mud pies. We were always together. Jacob was my rock especially the summer when I turned fifteen and everything went to hell, he was there taking care of me, supporting me and helping me anyway he could. Bella on the other hand probably didn't remember either one of them, she usually tried to repress memories from Forks or memories she didn't want to believe was her own fault.
"He's in a wheelchair now, he doesn't really drive anymore, and he offered it to me to buy for pretty cheap." Charlie continued.
"What year is it?" Bella asked.
I kicked the back of her seat and she turned around and glared at me, and I made sure to give her a pointed glare right back.
"Well, Billy has done a lot of work to it, it's only a couple years old really." Charlie said getting a little uncomfortable.
"Dad I really don't know anything about cars, I wouldn't be able to fix it if anything broke on it," She mumbled.
"Really Bella the truck works great," Charlie started.
"They don't build them like it anymore." I added.
I gave her a nudge, 'just accept it and move on'.
"That's really nice, Dad. Thank you I really appreciate it."
"Well, now, you're welcome." Dad mumbled back.
With that being awkward, I engaged dad in the latest baseball game while Bella mused on the weather. It was wet, but it was beautiful she couldn't deny that. Everything was green, the trees their trunks covered in moss, the ferns on the ground and even the green leaves that tumbled from the treetops. It seriously reminded me of one of my sci-fi novels. Or even a Disney movie. You almost could believe that Snow White and the seven dwarfs to come from between the trees. Finally an hour later we arrived home. It was a three-bedroom home that he originally bought with Renee in the early days of their marriage. Parked on the street in front of the house was the new truck. Well new to us, no doubt Bella would claim it, which was just fine with me. I'd rather be passenger than drive. It was a familiar sight to me, having ridden in the bed of the truck bed with Jake during the summers we'd go fishing. It was faded red, with big rounded fenders and a bulbous cab. It was cute in its own way and it was also solid. Something that Bella needed desperately with her being so accident prone. It was made out of iron, the kind that you see in accidents with only a scratch on the paint and the pieces of foreign car that it had tanked around it.
Standing beside the truck was a familiar face, as soon as the car parked I clamored out of the seat and all but flung myself at the tall budding teenager. He laughed and hugged me tight around the middle. Beside him his dad in the wheelchair chuckled. Firewood and oil were the smells that hit my nose, and honestly that didn't surprise me, Jake was always tinkering on something.
"Missed you," he whispered in my hair.
"Missed you more,"
Eventually he released me and I bent down to give Billy a hug.
"Looking good little bear," Billy commented.
"Still got it," I quipped back.
Bella and Charlie arrived, Charlie looked amused at my antics and Bella was curious.
"Well I'm glad you're finally here, Charlie here hasn't shut up about it since the day he told me you were coming," Billy said smiling kindly at Bella.
I snickered. Dad looked embarrassed.
"Yeah, yeah, keep talking and I'll roll you into the mud,"
Billy grinned and turned to face Charlie.
"After I ram you in the ankles!"
They began going back and forth.
"Hi I'm Jacob. We used to make mud pies when we were little," Jacob said.
Bella smiled, albeit awkwardly.
"Yeah no, I remember."
There was an awkward silence as Bella watched dad and Billy go back and forth.
"Are they always like this?"
"It gets worse with old age," Jacob and I said together.
Charlie seemed to remember that the kids were watching the adults with amused smiles.
"Well Bella what do you think?" Charlie asked slapping the hand down on the hood of the old Chevy.
"No way really?" She asked smiling.
"Really, just bought it off Billy here."
She went to the truck looking at it. While she was talking with Jacob and Charlie I leaned against the side of the truck, gripping my side as it ached slightly.
"Still getting flare ups?" Billy asked.
"Occasionally, when I'm anxious or worried. " I murmured.
"Don't worry, this will be good, for the both of you." Billy responded.
"I hope so," I murmured rubbing the spot trying to dissuade the pain.
I burst out laughing when Bella smacked Jake with the driver side door. Part of me hoped Billy was right, that Bella's visit would be good for all of us. The two didn't stay long as we had just arrived, I only took one trip to get all of Bella and I's things from the cruiser and into the house. Bella's room was the westward room that faced the front yard upstairs. My room had been the second bedroom upstairs facing the backyard year the large fir tree that had been there since the house was built. The roof was peeked, had wooden floors, and the walls in my room a light green, the windows were framed in brown curtains. It had been my room since mom had run off with Bella. I had more or less been living with Charlie full time since then. Having grown up with the natives of Forks. My bed was queen sized in the middle of the room with a canopy in sheer green curtains hanging from a rope that hung from the ceiling.
The dark wood stood out against the light walls, I had a dresser and end tables that matched the bed. There was also a desk that held a printer and a laptop that I had bought a year ago. The phone line reached through the wall connected to modem from Bella's room. Bella had her own secondhand computer, a stipulation from Renee. The closet in the corner near my bay window held my shirts and most of my clothes. A bookcase on the other side of the window held my books and it was near bursting. I needed get a second one soon. My taste in books had reoccurring theme, although there was a bit of eclectic tastes in there too. A hammock chair hung by the bookcase, a place I could usually be found in when I was reading or needed to hide from the world. There was a small bathroom at the top of the stairs which I would be sharing with Bella, Charlie's room had its own bathroom attached.
One of the good things about dad was that he didn't hover, he left us alone to unpack. As I put the dirty clothes in the hamper I vaguely wondered how Bella was holding up, though we weren't as close as maybe we once were, I know this wasn't easy on her. She detested Forks, and made her hatred of the place known when we were younger. Dinner was pretty uneventful, dad ordered some pizza, one of my personal favorites. I had glanced in the fridge as I wandered to get something to drink and realized that I we'd need to go to shopping for food soon. Dad was hopeless in the kitchen, I usually cooked and I prided myself that I was a pretty darn good. Dad never complained. But pizza was awesome and I went to bed looking forward to returning to school tomorrow.
