Chapter 2

Mera woke to cold droplets dripping down her face and a large figure standing over her. She couldn't make out much of her surroundings, but based on the little light that drifted through the curtains, it was late into the evening. And the figure above her could only be one person.

"Indus… what happened?"

"Lady Mera! Are you awake this time?" He smiled down at her in concern.

Mera sat up easily, supported by a mountain of pillows formed into some kind of nest. "What do you mean this time? Of course I'm awake." She growled in response.

As she brushed her tangled hair out with her hands, she listened to her companion try to explain.

After she'd passed out from her use of her epithet, he'd carried her back to bed and found his lady to have a fever. And so, as any 'honorable' bodyguard would do, Indus claimed he had stayed by her side, only leaving when absolutely necessary.

Mera was… surprisingly touched by this. She was extremely stubborn and was anything but nice to Indus the majority of the time. And yet… he still cared for her when she really needed him.

She looked away, embarrassed and uncertain. "...t-thank you… I guess."

His face lit up and beamed with a smile "Of course my lady! It was the honorable thing to do!"

She couldn't help but smile at this. He might be an extremely dull, bird-brained, but he still cared for her better than anyone else ever had. It was truly touching.

Mera let out a yawn, turning and taking the water glass from the oak nightstand. As she took small sips, her lilac-grey eyes glanced across the dim room, noticing cracks in the ground which the crystalline shards had broken through. Their jagged points still remained where they were, but some were broken to allow for easier access to and from the room (most likely Indus' doing).

"Could you bring me the museum blueprints?" she asked as her attention turned to the other person in the room. "I'd like to go over them again before we need to go."

"Are you sure that is such a good idea, Lady Mera?" Indus was, after all, only trying to protect his charge.

Her response came back in a growl. "Did I fucking stutter, Indus?"

"No my lady." He got up and left her beside. Shuffling could be heard from outside of her bedroom, most likely in the living room. A few books could be heard falling to the ground.

"You better not knock over my collection!" she shouted at him. Sure, she could make more, but she was proud of the small, colorful glass animals she'd made over the years from the shards which she created.

The little animals were made from tiny shards of glass which she would carefully piece together when she had nothing better to do. And Mera had gotten a lot of time to make them due to her parent's strict insistence of bed-rest.

Indus beamed upon his return with the rolled blueprints. "Not to worry, Lady Mera! I broke nothing."

"You better not have or you would be next." It was a lie. But there was no harm in a little threat to keep the only thing she knew how to make and not shatter safe.
