Yeah, I've posted two days in a row now... don't get too attached to this updating schedule because it will most definitely change. Heh heh...
This chapter turned out to be waaaay longer than I expected- over 2,000 words! I hope you all enjoy reading it, it was most certainly a blast to write. Thanks to everyone who left a review on the last chapter, I was so happy to see that my story was well-received. Some more direct replies:
Cap10Ameriken: I'm excited that you're excited! I don't actually know how big this war of pranks will get, I guess we'll find out soon...
CheezPretzel: Thank you so much! Not making the characters too OOC is definitely a big concern on my mind when I'm writing, so I'm glad you thought they were well done. I've always aspired to be a writer, ever since I was really little, and reading you say I had professional quality really made my day. :)
NuppaNuppa: *dramatic narrator voice*: And so, the Great Prank War of the Monastery of Spinjitzu continued...
Jaell and saracasticunicorn223: (I combined your replies because they're both really similar) I'm glad you guys thought it was funny! I will definitely keep writing and updating, be sure of it.
Day 2:
It was no secret that Kai hated Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
Any other chocolate and peanut butter combination he was fine with, but for some reason, he would never touch any sort of Reese's product, for as long as Nya could remember. "It's too dry," he always said. "It's just... I don't know, the peanut butter is never... peanut-buttery enough. You know?" Which made absolutely no sense to Nya- Reese's were the bomb, as far as she was concerned- but sometimes that was just the way Kai rolled.
However, it was a well-known fact that Kai liked spicy things. It may have come from being the fire ninja, but anything even remotely hot- cinnamon, jalapeƱo peppers, pico de gallo, anything- was a favorite of her brother's. So naturally, he had a giant stash of RedHots hidden in his room.
And Nya was determined to find them after she had seen and purchased an entire bag of red Reese's Pieces from the Ninjago Supermarket the night before.
So that was how she found herself creeping down the hallway towards Lloyd's room, unsure if Kai was up already and not wanting him to catch her. Her brother had the dawn patrol today and would be gone for a few hours, so, naturally, it was the perfect time to set up a prank.
Finally reaching Lloyd's room at the end of the hall, Nya knocked quietly on his door until she heard the sound of shuffling feet. Lloyd slid open the screen, leaning against the doorway, his hair a mess and a half-asleep expression on his face. "D'ya need som'ing, Nya?" he mumbled. She winced, feeling guilty for having woken him up.
"Yeah, sorry, but do you by any chance know where Kai keeps his stash of RedHots?" she whispered. Lloyd didn't answer for a few moments, rocking back and forth on his feet. Unsure if he actually heard her, Nya opened her mouth to repeat her question when Lloyd blinked and rubbed his eyes.
"Oh, is this for that prank war you guys are doing? Yeah, last I knew they were in the left side of the middle drawer of his dresser underneath his sparring gi. He likes to keep them in his pillowcase, too, so you could check there, but he had them there last week so he's probably moved them already."
Nya blinked, more than a bit impressed. "You seem very knowledgeable on the whereabouts of Kai's candy stash."
Lloyd grinned, running a hand through his shaggy blond hair. "Well, what can I say? I like candy."
Nya rolled her eyes and chuckled. "You sure do. Well, thanks for helping out. I'll let you get back to sleep."
He shrugged. "I'm already up. Might as well get the training course up and running, it always takes a while anyway."
Nya shook her head, smiling, as she said goodbye and slid the door back shut so Lloyd could get changed. She saw Kai coming out of the kitchen across the courtyard and quickly ducked behind one of the pillars, hoping he hadn't seen her. She waited a few minutes until she heard the sound of a dragon taking off, then poked her head out stealthily to make sure her brother had left before hurrying down the hallway towards her room. She needed to get her supply of Reese's before going into Kai's room, and she needed to move fast. Kai would only be gone for about an hour.
Slipping into her room, Nya went to her dresser and reached a hand under it, feeling around for the bag of candy she had hidden there the day before. Her fingers brushed on one of the corners and she dragged the pack out, the thin plastic crinkling with the motion. She crept out of her room down to Kai's, praying that the rustling of the bag wouldn't wake anyone else up.
She reached Kai's room and quietly slid open the bamboo screen, leaving it open so she could make a quick escape if she needed to. Remembering Lloyd's directions, she headed for the fire ninja's dresser and opened the drawer he had said they were in. Nya lifted the sparring gi that was buried in a corner, and sure enough, there it was- a small plastic container full of the little red candies. Grinning, Nya took it out and, kneeling on the floor, removed the lid. She took out the small pocket knife she kept on herself at all times and sliced open the bag of Reese's Pieces.
She checked the clock on Kai's wall. Yikes. He had already been gone for ten minutes.
Nya quickly took her jacket off and laid it on the floor, then poured the RedHots onto it. She began to count them, having a sneaking suspicion that Kai knew exactly how many little cinnamon candies there were and would immediately know something was up if Nya didn't swap out the same amount. Her fingers flew over the candies as she separated them into piles of ten. "Forty, fifty, sixty, sixty-eight!" she muttered under her breath, reaching the last of the RedHots. Nya scooped up handful after handful of the red Reese's Pieces and counted them out, making sure she had exactly sixty-eight of them, too. Dumping the replacement candies into the container Kai used, she gathered up the RedHots in her sweater and tied it into a bundle. She stood up, grabbing her sweater and the bag of extra Reese's Pieces. and carefully placed the container back underneath her brother's gi. Closing the drawer, she glanced at the clock again. Thirty more minutes.
She hurried over to Kai's bed and lifted his pillow, reaching her hand inside to see if he had stored some in there as well. Finding both sides empty, she replaced the pillow and turned to leave his room. Just as she was about to close the screen, a flash of red caught her eye, right alongside the wall.
Another RedHot.
Rushing back inside, she checked the clock on the wall, seeing that she only had twenty-eight more minutes to find whatever secondary stash Kai had and swap those out as well. She kneeled and picked up the small candy, her eyes darting around the wall frame as she tried to spot where the rest were hidden. Peering behind the bamboo screen, she finally noticed a plastic bag nestled in between the door and the wall. Nya slid the door closed until she was able to reach the bag and tug it out. Holding it up, she estimated there were about forty RedHots. She looked at the clock again.
Twenty-three minutes.
Nya quickly untied her sweater and laid it out on the floor again, careful not to spill any candy. She shook out the bag, careful to not mix the two piles, and carefully began counting the RedHots. Forty-two.
She glanced at the clock again and cursed under her breath. Seventeen minutes. She'd have to do this really quickly in order to not get caught.
Nya re-opened the bag of Reese's Pieces that was by her side and counted out exactly forty-one chocolates. Rats. She was one candy short, and, with a glance towards the clock, only had thirteen minutes left.
"Ahh, what do I do, what do I do," she whispered, racking her brain for an answer to her problem. She couldn't just leave one RedHot, that would counteract her entire prank, but she didn't want to risk the fact that Kai counted all of his candy.
Her eyes darted to the clock again. Ten minutes.
Nya decided to risk it and dumped the peanut butter chocolates into the plastic bag, unceremoniously shoving it back behind the fire ninja's door. She gathered up the RedHots and scooped them into the empty Reese's bag, making sure there were none left on the floor, then tied her jacket around her waist and stood up. She scanned the room, making sure everything was the same as when she entered, and noticed her pocket knife still lying on the floor next to Kai's dresser. Hurrying over there, Nya scooped it up and placed it back in her pocket, sneaking one more glance at the clock.
Seven minutes.
She heard a dragon fly overhead outside and stiffened. He was back early! Nya spun around, checking the room one last time, before darting to the door and sliding it closed.
It was stuck.
Cursing, Nya jiggled the screen, trying to get it unstuck from the bag of candy that was bulging out from the wall. It finally gave way, rolling along with the screen as Nya yanked it shut. She whirled around just as Kai's dragon's feet touched the ground and sprinted, as quietly as she could, towards the kitchen. She dashed inside, breathing heavily, clutching the bag of RedHots, to see a surprised Lloyd staring at her from the table in shock.
"D'you do it?" he asked, setting his spoon back down in his bowl of cereal. Nya nodded, laughing.
"Yep. Replaced every last one of his RedHots with Reese's Pieces. He'll be in for a nice surprise."
Lloyd chuckled and returned to his bowl of Dragon-O's. Nya studied the bag full of RedHots, wondering what to do with them now that her prank had been successful. "Hey Lloyd," she asked. "What do you think I should do with these?"
Lloyd's eyes lit up. "You could give them to me..."
Nya laughed and tossed him the bag. "Just don't go too sugar-crazy on me, okay? We might still need an actually-functioning leader later today."
He grinned, already pawing through the bag. Nya shook her head, smiling, as she left the room and spotted Kai just emerging from his. He narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her, and she forced herself to keep an innocent expression on her face until he had passed and gone into the game room. Nya smirked. She couldn't wait to see his reaction once he'd found out what she had done.
She went back to her room, deciding that she could at least finish making her bed while she waited. It wasn't long, however, before she heard a cry of disbelief from the room next to hers. Cracking up, Nya turned around as Kai ripped her door open and held up a container of small red candies, a sour expression on his face.
"Did you do this?" he growled, frowning as Nya continued to laugh hysterically.
"Maaaaaybe. But you'll never prove it!" she said, chuckling.
Kai sniffed. "You just wait. I'll get you back for both of these, now," he retorted. He spun on his heel and marched out of her room, shaking his head in disbelief. Nya grinned, turning back to her bed and grabbing her pillow to fluff it.
A few moments later, another shout was heard coming from next door. "What? How could you possibly have found both places?!"
That sent Nya into another cascade of giggles.
I actually got inspired for this chapter because Reese's Peanut Butter Cups aren't very high on my list either, heh heh. However, I mean no disrespect to those of you out there who like that kind of chocolate- it's simply a personal opinion of mine.
The next update will be either tomorrow or Saturday, hopefully. Stay safe, stay healthy, and have a nice day, everyone!
