Chapter 2: Strange
Ellie's POV
it had been a few days since we began our journey west. We tried the best we could to keep a low profile and avoid attracting attention. For the most part we had stayed together as a pack but right now I was on my own. The others had decided to turn human again so they could venture into town to look for a map. That way they could figure out exactly where we were.
I closed my eyes to go to sleep for the night. But soon thoughts of my family were racing through my head. I tried not to think about my parents because it always brought on strong feelings of guilt. I had been with my adoptive parents ever since I was a baby. I was only a few months old when I had been dupmed in a landfill of all places. I was lucky that a worker discovered me there. If not I would have died.
My parents couldn't have any children of their own so they chose to adopt. By some stroke of luck I was the baby they picked. I was lucky to have parents like them. I was their daughter in every single way except for blood. They were my parents in all the ways that mattered. They gave me all the love I needed so I never gave much thought about my biological parents. After all they had gotten rid of me in a landfill of all places. They didn't even care enough to bring me to a police station or hospital. So why should I care about them?
It wasn't unti the whole turning into a wolf thing that I started to wonder about my biological family. Had I inherited this strange ability from them? If that was the case than what was I? A werewolf? A shapeshifter? Obviously something that wasn't human. The only myths that came close to describing ny reality were the Quileute wolf legends that I had read online. Could we be related to that tribe? It didn't seem likely that my family would travel all the way from Forks, Washington to New Orleans, Louisiana to get rid of me. If they wanted to they could've gotten rid of me somewhere closer to home.
I sighed. My adoptive parents certainly didn't deserve everything that I had done to them. Up until a few months ago everything had been fine. That was until I started to change on them. The physical changes were strange. Suddenly growing taller, gaining muscle, and tye constant never ending fever. It was the fits of anger. Anything and everyone provoked me easily the few weeks leading up to the wolf. Even afterwards I still couldn't get a handle on my temper. When I got pregnant my mood swings only got worse.
Maybe my parents were happy I left. They didn't have to deal with me and my anger issues anymore.
I smiled when I felt the puppies wiggle inside of me again. No matter what happened now I would love them and take care of them. Once all this crazy wolf stuff was figured out I'd go back to school and get my G.E.D. Then I'd get a job while I went to college. I'd always wanted to be a veterinarian and I saw no reason that I had to give up on my dreams. Would it be difficult to do that as a mom of God only knows how many babies? Yes it most definitely would be. But I wasn't going to give up that easily. Especially if I had Ethan here to help.
The wind suddenly shifted a new, horrible scent, assaulted my nose. It was sickeningly sweet. It made me nauseous. What was that? I had to find out. I stood up and lifted my nose into the scent into the air. The scent was coming from a northern direction. The city was busy despite it being nighttime.
I did the best that I could to stay out of sight. I didn't want to see how people would react to seeing a wolf the size of a horse walking around. The scent got stronger and stronger the more I walked. I must've been getting to the source.
"Help!" someone screamed. "Someone help us!"
Chills ran down the base of my spine. The woman's screams came from the same direction the scent was cominh from. I picked up the pace. I had to find her. I had to help her. If someone was attacking her I could save her. I was stronger and faster than I was before.
I rounded the corner into an alley and saw something that scared the hell out of me. There were two people, a man and a woman both deathly pale and inhumanely beautiful, with the most frightening red eyes I had ever seen. The smell was really bad now. I quickly realized that they were the source of the smell.
They were hurting an innocent woman and her child. I had to do something. I growled as loud and viciously as I could. The pale couple looked at me and then started laughing before returning to the human woman and her daughter.
I ran as fast as I could. My teeth bared and ready to attack. The man suddenly turned around and hit me so hard that I was sent flying into the street. I heard the screeching tires before a car slammed into the side of my body. I squealed loudly in pain. Then I heard another car crash. For a second I was stunned but then I got up. I could tell that my leg was broken but that didn't stop my pursuit of those whatever they were.
I had almost grabbed the man when he suddenly jumped out of the way. Ice cold arms suddenly grabbed me around my neck and throat. I tried to bite the ice cold woman who was holding me captive but failed miserably. She was going to crush me to death. I just knew it.
Then Ethan suddenly appeared and tried to attack her but he was easily thwarted by the man. Thankfully it was enough of a distraction for the cold woman to release me. I gasped for breath. That's when I realized that the rest of the pack was there. They must have all heard what was going on as soon as they wolfed out again.
Mia tried to attack her but failed as well. Mitch, Eric, and Mason joined the fray. Suddenly I was hit from the side and was sent flying once again. I landed in the street once again but this time I was able to avoid getting hit by a car. But I saw the previous wreck that happened the first time and it didn't look good at all. One car was completely flipped over. Paramedics had swarmed the place. People were staring at me. Most with their phones out.
"Look there's more!" someone shouted. Ethan, Mia, Mitch, Eric, and Mason had all come looking for me.
"Are you okay?" Ethan asked me as he nuzzled me. "and what about the puppies?"
"I'm fine and so are the puppies," I had felt the little rascals bouncing around in there like crazy when I had been sent flying backwards into the street both times but I was sure they were fine. I could still feel movement.
"Let's get out of here now!" Ethan ordered. We obeyed instantly. The pale couple were gone. Those, whatever they were, were now gone. Only the human woman and her daughter remained.
"I thought you said you were fine," Ethan said when he noticed me limping.
"I'll be fine,"
"What happened?"
"That woman was in danger. She was calling out for help. I thought I could help. But those two things, whatever they are, I don't know. They were really strong,"
"Let's hope we don't see them again. Or anymore like them. Because we obviously don't know how to fight them and we shouldn't get involved,"
We all nodded in agreement.
