This is a flashback to the first scene between the bridge crew and Pike as the bridge crew are trying to deal with the news that they might lose their captain.
Pike puts his hand on the hand scanner. All new people to star ships need to be checked in before they can go any further. Even though he was sure everyone knew who he was anyway. Not to be cocky or anything.
He looked over at commander Saru. Saru was still trying to let it sink in that he wasn't in charge anymore and Pike could see right through him.
"I'm ensign Tilly." Said the ensign in front of Pike checking everything was going right.
Pike smiled at her. He could tell she was nervous. He had already heard everything about the crew of the Discovery and what they had been through in the last few months.
"You have lovely nail beds." Tilly continued. She then turned away nervously.
"Thank you." Pike smiled keeping back laughter. He had never heard that before.
"Oh, I know what's wrong. You're pinkys in the wrong place."
Oh, dear how embarrassing was this conversation right now. Pike knew that the ensign was feeling awkward doing this. But Pike knew a way of cheering her up.
"Can I just?" She asked as she went to move his little finger.
"Oh ow." Pike said when she moved it.
The bridge crew looked up out of concern. Pike looked up and knew he made a mistake.
"Kidding." He said. They all laughed.
"Right there we go. Oh no, oh and that's your file."
Tilly said this as all of Pikes information came up on the screen. The bridge looked awkwardly at Pike trying not to look at it as it might contain private stuff.
"No keep it up. Everyone sit down. I want you all to read it. Up there is my file. My Starfleet commendations, my diagnosis of childhood asthma. Oh, and the big red! That is my failing grade in astrophysics at the academy."
Half of the crew laughed at that point. A captain of a star ship hasn't passed astrophysics. Especially as most of them were amazing at astrophysics.
Pike acknowledged the laugh. He didn't care everybody who heard that in Starfleet laughed.
"I know what you have all gone through in these past few months. I'm here to make sure it all goes right and not wrong."
The crew smiled at Pike. They knew they could trust him. More than their last captain anyway. They knew they were going to be fine under him as captain.
Pike took his seat in the captain's chair. He looked back at Saru who still wouldn't look him in his eyes. This was going to be a long mission if a captain and his senior officer wouldn't talk to each other.
"Detmer, take us to warp three."
