Chapter 2
Kyle, Kipp, and Beaver sat in Beaver's kitchen talking.
"So Kevin is going to his first sleepover tonight," Beaver said.
"Yes," Kyle replied. "I was nervous, but I'm happy for him."
"You are?" Kipp asked his son.
"No!" Kyle sobbed.
"Oh, Kyle," Beaver said. "Stop worrying so much. I went to several sleepovers when I was Kevin's age."
"Me too," Kipp said. "And so did you."
"I know," Kyle said.
Later, Kyle and Neddie sat in the diner eating lunch.
"You and I went to several sleepovers when we were 10," Neddie said. "Remember Charlie Scorsone's sleepovers? The neighborhood girls would sneak over once the parents were asleep and play Spin-the-Bottle and 7 Minutes in Heaven. We'd go to those sleepovers until we were 15-and-a-half."
"Yes," Kyle said. "As I recall, Kevin was conceived during the last sleepover."
"Probably during 7 Minutes in Heaven," Neddie said.
"Shut up," Kyle said.
"Don't worry," Neddie said. "10-year-olds are a lot different today than when we were 10."
That evening, Kyle drove up to Donnie Samson's house with Kevin in the backseat.
"Okay," Kyle said. "Be on your best behavior."
"I will," Kevin said, reaching for the door.
"And don't fight with people," Kyle said.
"I won't," Kevin said.
"Do you want me to walk you to the door?" Kyle asked.
"Goodbye, Dad," Kevin said, getting out of the car and running to the front door.
Kyle broke down once more.
"My baby didn't even want me to walk him toward the door," Kyle sobbed.
