Chapter 02: Jealousy
Addison and Derek lay silently side by side in their hotel bed and staring at the ceiling.
At some point she turned a little uncertainly to him and said, "Say something!"
But he kept silent.
Addison stood up, covered her nakedness with a towel, and then walked over to the bathroom.
Derek stared at the ceiling.
He had become sober again when he realized what he had done. He closed his eyes for a moment because he was so shocked and shocked by what he had done that he could only be ashamed.
He, who finally wanted to marry Meredith Grey, was no longer in control of his urges and had attacked his ex - wife as if he had not had a wife for years.
Addison's attraction was deadly to any relationship. Was it her red hair, or her clear eyes? Or her flawless body, which had so captivated him? He did not know.
He wanted to get up and run away. But that was not possible because his clothes were not dry yet. Maybe they would be in the morning. But so much could happen before then.
Would he stay in bed one night until dawn at Addison, without rushing over her eagerly again?
Eventually, Addison came out of the bathroom and put out the light.
It was already dark. The rain whipped against the hotel window. The storm howled through the trees in front of the hotel.
She sat back on her side of the bed and slipped under the covers.
"Do you regret it?" She finally asked.
Derek finally looked at her. What should he say to that?
He nodded.
"You do not have to tell her anything," she remarked. "In silence you are lonely top."
He sighed. "She will look at it."
"How is she supposed to look at it?" Addison asked.
He shrugged his shoulders. "Women notice when I'm lying," he explained. "Or not?"
She nodded in agreement. "Yes you are right. But not saying anything means, yes, you do not have to consciously lie to them. "She took a deep breath. "Besides, it does not matter to you that you slept with me. Just shut up and everything will be fine! "
"I do not know," he sighed.
Addison gently rested her head against his chest.
He did not push her away. He did not want that. He could not use her first, then push her away. He was not such a man. He had not even done that with Rose.
"Promise me, Addie!" He finally looked at her with certainty.
"What?" She asked.
"Nobody will ever know anything about this night!" He looked her in the eyes.
She shook her head. "I will not say anything." She stroked his cheek affectionately. Then she stretched out to kiss him tenderly and kissed him again.
He could not resist her again. Whether he had a guilty conscience about sleeping with Addison or the whole night, it did not matter. He betrayed Meredith with Addison anyway. And Meredith did not care if it was once or five times. She would surely hate him for that.
In the morning, he came to the hospital a little later than usual because he really wanted to avoid Meredith. He had hoped that she would be gone to sleep after the night shift. But it was not so. She was still in the hospital and had just assisted with a emergency surgery.
She came towards him in the corridor beaming.
"Derek, you will not believe it!" She turned around happily once around herself.
"What's going on?" He asked tiredly.
She smiled all over her face. "I've ...!" She paused and made a theatrical pause. "I just did a pregnancy test!"
She pulled the test out of her pocket and showed him the positive test.
"I'm pregnant.", She brought him the happy message.
Derek wanted to smile, but then his face slipped for a moment. Such a crap, his facial expressions did not play along. Heart to brain he heard only his inner voice: "Rejoice, you will father!"
"You ..." He searched for the right words. "Are you pregnant?" His voice trembled slightly. "How ...?" He looked at her completely perplexed.
"You ask how that happened?" She laughed. "Derek, did you get up on the wrong foot today or should I really explain to you how a child is born?"
He shook his head in silence.
"Say something, ...!" She looked at him expectantly.
He just nodded slightly.
Her smile fell silent at the same moment.
"What is it?" She asked worriedly. "I thought you were happy."
"That's what I do too," he said.
"Well, if that's joy, ..." She looked at him in concern. "... then I do not want to know what it looks like when you're angry or irritated."
Derek thought for a moment. Meredith told him she was expecting a child from him, and he always thought of Addison and what they had both done.
She stood in front of him, expecting a positive reaction. And he had to overcome this first, because he was very happy internally to finally become a father.
"I'm happy," he said over his lips. "I am really looking forward."
He spread his arms beamingly and she threw herself in his arms and let him whirl around him.
"Have you been to the doctor?" He asked excitedly, as the first so-called shock seconds were over.
She shook her head. "No not yet. But I'll go afterwards. "
"Promise?" He asked.
She nodded. "Promised!"
"You make me very happy, Meredith." He gave her a long passionate kiss.
But at the same moment he flinched when he heard Addison's voice behind him.
"Good morning, Derek!", She greeted him. "Meredith!" She turned to Derek's friend. "I hope I do not disturb you."
Meredith shook her head. "No, you do not disturb."
"What's to celebrate?" Addison asked.
Derek shook his head, but Meredith nodded.
Addison frowned. "How am I to understand that? Is there anything to celebrate, is not it? "
Derek took a deep breath and started to say something, when suddenly there was panic on Addison's face.
"It's not like Archer, is it?" She asked excitedly.
He waved off immediately. "No, no, ... he's fine," he assured her. "He's fine, is not he?" He turned to Meredith because he had not had time to check on Archer.
Meredith nodded. "He keeps the sisters busy," she said.
Addison smiled. "Yeah, then it seems to him that he's actually getting better." She let out a gasp. "You gave me a real scare." She put her hand on Derek's shoulder and came dangerously close to his ear. "Take a deep breath, Derek.", She whispered.
"Say, would you have time?" Meredith asked.
Addison looked at her a bit puzzled. Meredith addressed her directly, privately? Something was wrong.
"That depends on what for?" She replied.
"Well ... I ..." Meredith pulled out the pregnancy test again and said, looking at it, "I did the test earlier and just wanted to know if I'm really pregnant and if I'm okay."
Meredith smiled a little tormented.
Why did she ask Addison? Did she want to triumph internally? Oh, God, did she really ask her? Now there was no turning back.
Addison looked at her a bit unsure, then instinctively ran her hand through her hair and took a deep breath.
Derek had a coughing fit with Meredith's question at the same moment. Addison patted him carefully on the back, but looked at Meredith.
"Of course I can do that," she then assured with a contrived smile. "I'm just looking for my brother, and then we can do the ultrasound."
Meredith smiled. "Very nice.", She replied. "Thank you."
Derek had recovered from his coughing fit.
"Is it going again?" Addison grinned at him.
He just nodded without looking at her.
Addison then took a deep breath to her brother, while Derek looked after her for some time and when she was gone, turned back to Meredith. "Are you crazy?" He asked.
"Why?" Meredith asked, puzzled.
"Why are you asking Addison? There are enough competent gynecologists here. Why Addison? "
She smiled. "I thought, when it comes to our baby, I want the best to see if everything goes well," she explained. "And that's Addison Montgomery."
Derek frowned. "Does that have something to do with female power?" He finally asked.
She frowned. "How do you mean?"
"That you might want to wipe Addison out because she was my wife?" He replied.
She shook her head with an innocent look. "No, I did not want that. I always thought we were friends. "
"Girlfriends?" Derek looked at her in surprise. "Do you really think so?"
Meredith shook her head. "No, but I thought we got along better with each other now."
"I understand!" Derek nodded. "Be close to your friend, but closer to your enemy."
Meredith looked at him skeptically. "I thought you were right if Addison and I did not fight each other anymore."
Derek shook his head. "I prefer it when you have nothing to do with her."
Meredith grabbed his arm because he wanted to get away from her. "I thought you got on well with her, and that you finally split up for good."
"We have that, too," he replied. "I just do not want my ex-wife allies with my girlfriend."
"But we do not." Meredith smiled. "Definitely not."
Derek looked at her silently for a long time.
"Addison and I are just too different.", She realized.
"That's what I love you for." He gave her a kiss.
Meredith waited excitedly in front of Archer's room for Addison. Again and again she rubbed her hands nervously.
It was perhaps a mistake, and an inner need of a woman, the ex - wife of her beloved, triumphantly to show: "Hey, look, he just loves me. And we're going to have a baby. "But somehow that was also a satisfaction, because Addison had hurt her too much back then, when she had just appeared out of nowhere.
It was not long before Addison came out of the room. Her friend Naomi had stayed with Archer.
"Oh, yes, ... Meredith!" Addison said, as if she had forgotten her. But it was not so.
It had felt like a knife stab in her heart when Meredith had said she was expecting a baby from Derek.
"I completely forgot about you." Addison smiled. "But we can start the investigation right now."
Meredith nodded.
They walked down the hall to the gynecological ward.
Addison did the examination, took her blood off and then did another ultrasound.
"Congratulations!" Addison smiled as she saw the fetus on the screen. "It's true. You are pregnant, Meredith. "
Meredith smiled beaming. "For real?"
Addison nodded and looked at the fetus on the screen. "About seventh, eighth week.", She realized. "You should go to your gynecologist regularly and have him looked after during pregnancy!"
Meredith nodded. "And it all looks good?", She wanted to know excitedly.
Addison took a deep breath.
She did not make eye contact with Meredith.
She had not thought that she was going to derail Meredith's pregnancy so much, and that she had long been over Derek. But apparently that was not the case. She could curse herself. Why was she so extremely jealous of Meredith and Derek? Or was she jealous that they would have a baby? A baby, what she wanted more than anything in the world?
"It's okay," Addison remarked with a smile. At last she managed to look at Meredith. "Do not worry!"
Meredith beamed with happiness. "May I have a picture of my baby?" She asked.
Addison avoided her smile. "Of course." She printed out the photo and handed it to Meredith.
Addison was completely confused when she finally went back to her brother.
He had gotten up against the advice of Derek and had begun to get dressed. Naomi helped him, because she had not been able to dissuade him.
"Where do you want to go?" Addison asked, startled.
"I want to get out of here!" He assured. "I want to go home!"
"Home?" Addison braced her arms in the sides. "You are totally crazy! Off to bed!"
He shook his head as the door opened and Derek came in.
"So, Archer, here's the discharge letter for your neurologist." He handed his former brother-in-law what he asked.
"You dismiss him?" Addison looked at Derek indignantly. "But that does not work! The surgery was just yesterday. "
"Your brother wants to go home, at his own request," Derek explained. "Besides, he said he would sue me if I kept him longer against his will."
Addison looked at Archer in shock. "Are you crazy?" What's the Archer supposed to do? "
"I'm going back to Los Angeles," he commented. "I will not stay here any day longer." He tore the letter from Derek's hand, allowing himself to be supported by Naomi and led out.
Addison was so perplexed that she could hardly say anything.
"You can say" thank you. ", She just remarked.
But Archer was already gone.
The door closed.
"Thanks, Derek!" She looked at him with a relieved look. "Thank you for having operated on him, and he is feeling so well again."
Derek smiled. "Make sure he goes to his neurologist in Los Angeles right away!"
"I will." She returned his smile. She went to the door, but then stopped again. "Oh, yes, ... congratulations, Derek."
"For what?" He looked at her questioningly.
"Meredith was right: you will become a father."
Derek just nodded silently.
"Joy looks different," she realized.
"I'm happy.", He said a bit depressed.
"I can see that," she replied flatly.
"It's just that ..." He ran nervously through hair.
Addison looked at him silently for some time, then said, "I will not tell her about last night, if that's what's causing you sleepless nights."
Derek smiled a little tormented. Ten years of marriage had not left them without a trace. They knew each other only too well.
"I'm raking it off as a nice experience." Addison remarked. "That was not more for me."
Derek took a deep breath. "Not for me, too."
They looked deeply into each other's eyes for a few moments.
For Addison, that was not just an experience, which made her so easy to forget. But she also did not want to get involved with Derek again and destroy his relationship with Meredith. She would never do that.
"Goodbye, Addison!" Derek made a deep smile.
Addison came closer and gave him a gentle kiss. "All the best, Derek!"
With these words she left the room
