Derek Shepherd was shaken awake from a deep slumber by his father James. Derek looked a lot like his father he was tall and had similar dark hair. He wore a light blue shit that complemented his eyes and with jeans. He owned a shop in downtown Manhattan, he liked getting there really early to beat the usual rush of traffic. It was early in the morning and Derk had school so before James left he made sure to wake up the kids on his way out so his wife Carolyn had less to do, but now that the kids were old enough to get themselves ready she got the extra time to sleep.

Derek laid in bed for a while after his dad came in to wake him. He staired outside of his bedroom window that rested above his bed and sighed looking out at the small street the shepherds shared with three other houses. He sighed as he pulled himself out of bed and moved over to his dresser where the clothes were nicely organized. He pulled out a pair of blue jeans and a grey t-shirt, then gound the nearest sweatshirt he could find and threw it over himself.

"Derek get down here Mark is here and for breakfast and you're running out of time," Carolyn yelled. Derek ran down the stairs to his best friend who was already sitting at the table ready for breakfast. It was the first day of seventh grade for the boys. "So Kathleen is going to drop you guys off at school," She said as she placed the plate of eggs down on the centre of the table. "and did you do what I asked yesterday?"

"uh no," Derek asked hiding from his mother who was about to yell at him.

"Why not!" She said in a stern voice. "That was the only thing I asked you to do yesterday." Mark started to laugh. she turned her gaze to meet Marks, "You have no excuse either young man you were with him in our front yard when I asked, so both of you have got no excuse." Mark stopped giggling and turned his eyes to meet Dereks who looked almost or even more guilty. "Go over and do it now before you leave," They boys shoved the last part of there eggs in their mouths and quickly left the table.

"Come on do we have to do this?" Mark said as the two boys made their way across Dereks front lawn. Morning air was crisp and the lawn was dewy.

"Yes Mark, if we don't she will lose it, plus she's not that bad," Derek suggested as they walked over to the dark house across the way.

"Not that bad? Hahaha, that's funny," Mark said.

"Well not all of the time, I remember when you weren't there over the summer I was stuck with her and there were some days that weren't that bad," Derek said as he looked at the house that was now towering over the two boys.

The boys continued to rant about the girl that lived in its walls until they were standing at the door. Derek reached his hand out and knocked twice.

"What if the house is actually haunted, "Mark whispered before the door opened to reveal Meredith Grey.

"What are you guys doing here?" She said cold. Meredith was dressed in a white loose top and blue jeans. Her hair was down and went just past her shoulders.

"Uh my mom wanted us to come over and see if you need a ride to school cause it's your first day and all," Derek asked. "the bus really sucks," He added.

"Did your mom tell you to come over here?"

"Yeah, so if you could like say yes so we don't get yelled at again that would be great."

"uh fine but just because she is the one who asked," Meredith said as she opened the door wider to revile a large entryway that had pictures of Meredith and her mom, and some of the kids in the neighbourhood. She grabbed her backpack and walked out the front door. She followed the two boys back to Derek's house where his sister was waiting in the car.

"Hurry up and get your asses in the car Josh wants to meet up before first period. Oh Hi, Meredith!" She said with a smile as the three of them got in the car.

The day went by fast for Derek. He was happy that he got most of his friends in his classes and pretty good teachers for the most part. Derek never had a hard time making friends but he would much rather have one good friend than a crowd of "friends", so he was content with the group of 5 he was with. In a blink of an eye, the bell had rung and everyone rushed out their seventh period. Derek had to ride the bus home from school which wasn't so bad.

The boy made his way to the line of yellow busses, he found his route number got on and took a seat in the middle of the bus but closer to the front then back. He lied to Meredith earlier because of Marks views on the girl he did think she wasn't so bad to be around. He thought for a bit and wondered if Mark and a crush on her because his sister Nancy once said that when a boy hates a girl its because he likes her. The bus ride was long for him because he was the last stop, but it always gave him extra time to do some homework and think in quiet before getting home to the loud house he lived in. He started out the window and saw that the tires were coming to a stop as the usual people got off. Usually, he is the last person on at this point but to his surprise, someone came and sat down next to him in his seat.

"So are you like a nerd or something?" He looked up and no other then Meredith Grey sat down next to him.

"No! What makes you think that?" He asked defending himself.

"Well you are sitting up at the front of the bus alone for the entire bus ride," She stated.

"No! I will have you know I have lots of friends, unlike you." He said fighting back.

"Then why did I sit and talk to people the whole bus ride while you were up here?"

"Because those aren't my friends." He said bluntly.

"oh yeah, I forgot they're imaginary!" She pointed to her head. "Thanks for reminding me!" She said sarcastically.

"Haha very funny." He said as he turned to look out the window again. "So how was your first day of middle school?" He asked feeling awkward that she was still there and sitting by him.

"It was actually really fun!. I meet a lot of new people that went to different elementary schools then I did. They all seemed pretty nice!" She exclaimed. "How was yours?" She asked back.

"It was good. I have some good teachers this year and friends in my classes which is a plus!"

The moment he stopped talking the bus wheels came to a halt and the door slid open. The two got up, said thank you to the bus driver and went on there way. The bus dropped them off on the main road that led to their road. The Neighbourhood was et up in a weird pattern. There was one main street that ran all throughout it that had houses placed on corners but then they had roads going off to the side that could only fit one car. They made their way to the street having conversations about people at school and things in general. They reach the houses and Carolyn is out in the yard gardening.

"Hello, Meredith!" She yells from across the yard. Derek walks straight inside while his mother gets up to talk with Meredith. "Is your mom gonna be home tonight honey, if you want you can always come over to our house for dinner. Tonight we are having pot roast, and we have a few extra seats at the dinner table tonight and we would love your company!" Carolyn knew that Elis worked crazy hours due to her high-intensity job, she would always see Meredith threw a window while she was gardening alone. It made her sad, she also knew the kind of women Elis was and how tough she was on her daughter.

"Actually my mom should be home tonight, thank you for the offer though," Meredith said in a sweet voice. Carolyn moved closer so she was almost touching the street.

"Well, just so you know our door is open whenever!"

"Thank you," Meredith said as she turned to unlock her door.

Later that night after the Shepherd family was done with dinner, they all proceeded as they usually do. James turns on the T.V., the girls go do whatever it was the preoccupied them before dinner, Derek would take out the trash and do the dishes, and Carolyn would clean up dinner and put away the leftovers. Derek's least favorite thing to do was take out the trash, it had a lingering smell that makes him feel the sudden urge to vomit. He planned on escaping the clutches of his mother before she noticed the trash was gone. After the dishes were clean and dry he sprinted up to his room thinking he was in the clear until he heard the voice of his yelling mother.

"Derek get down here your not done," She yelled up the stairs. He obeyingly got up and walked downstairs and into the kitchen grabbing the trash. "Also when you go out there take this over to the Grey's house would you?" She said handing him a plate of leftovers. He reached out to take the plate while nodding yes. He knew who it was for and why he was doing it so he didn't mind the extra trek.

Derek reached Meredith's door and rang the doorbell. The young girl answered the doorbell with a small smile.

"My mom wanted me to bring this over to you since your mom didn't come home," The words made Meredith sad. She felt like her mother was ignoring her because she hasn't been home in 24 hours.

"Oh, thanks! Its smells really good," She said holding back tears.

"Yeah, I'm sorry," Derek said looking up at her.

"For what?"

"Well you just are always alone in this house, I couldn't imagine not having my family there with me." He said.

"It's not as bad as it seems, I can go to bed whenever I want so I guess that's kinda cool."

"Yeah."

"Yeap." She said waiting for him to leave.

"Ok well goodnight Meredith," He said as he turned to walk away from the big empty house.

"Night Derek." She said shutting the door.

AN: OK SO THIS CHAPTER IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE PLACE OVER THE CORSE OF MIDDLE SCHOOL. It's GOING TO JUMP AROUND A BIT SORRY ABOUT THAT :).

GAGAGAGAGAGA

one year later

Merediths was having a fun time in middle school so far. She was making a lot of friends, she was getting good grades, and for the most part all of her teachers like her. There were a few bumps in the road here and there but they were mostly from friends group drama and the fact that her mother didn't even feel like a mother but more of a visitor just passing by when she was home. She hated being alone in the house, ever since she was a little girl looking out across the way to see them running and playing, and hear the laughter and yelling she wanted to be apart of that.

Every day would be somewhat the same, Meredith would get up, get a ride to school with the Shepherds (even though it was somewhat a forced friendship from Derek's mother ever since she first moved here she still appreciated it), at school, she would go to her classes and gossip with her friends about ever there was to gossip about that day, then take the long bus ride home where she usually moved to sit next to Derek when no one else was on, but today was different. Today her best friend Rose was coming over to hang out after school. Rose had black hair and tan skin only the tan wasn't real, her eyes were blue but dark, and she wore jeans with a yellow sweatshirt.

The two girls laughed almost the whole way home. As they walked to Meredith's house with Derek walking a few paces in front of them, rose turned to Meredith, "So who is that." She said quietly so he couldn't here.

"Him," She pointed up at Derek, "Uh Derek Shepherd he's in the grade above us." She said bluntly.

"He's kinda cute," Rose said still whispering. It made Meredith upset, in a way that Rose thought he was cute.

'She thinks he's cute. haha please, you don't stand a chance, he's an eighth-grader like he would go for you. He's not even that good looking right. Right. Shit.' she thought to herself.

Her thoughts were interrupted by her friend. "Do you know anything about him, is he dating anyone?" She asked. Meredith didn't want to hang out with her anymore today.

"I um think I'm going to be sick. I think it would be best if you went home and didn't come over. If I have something I wouldn't want to get you sick so I think its best if you leave now," She said holding her stomach.

"Oh no I'm sorry, Well your lucky I don't live too far away. Bye Meredith." She said with a laugh.

"Bye," she said turning back glad that she was gone. Meredith looked up to see Derek standing there smiling.

"What are you smiling about?" She said as she caught up to him.

"Don't get too close I don't want your sickness," He laughed knowing that she just bullshited her friend into leaving.

She got closer to him and leaned in so her face was a few inches away from his and faked coughed. He pushed her away and pretended to be sick and die. The two of them laughed as they continued walking.

"Oh hey you know what I heard at school today," she looked at him.

"what."

The two continued walking and talking until they reached the part where they had to part ways.

"Hey is your mom going to be home today?" He said looking up at her.

"Um I think so but you never know," She said with sadness in her.

"Ok well if she's not you should come over and eat dinner with us. uh only because my mom will probably make me ask anyway," He said trying to save himself.

"Maybe if she doesn't show."

"Ok well, I got a lot of homework, so ill catch up with you later." He said turning to walk towards his house.

"Yeah me too, bye"

"Bye."

Once inside Derek ran up to his room to look out his bedroom window to see if she was still out there. to his disappointment she vanished within the walls of the house.

Derek had a crush.
