As Emily was getting ready to go and see her brothers, she was really nervous which felt weird given that they were supposed to be family. She tried to think over what she would say to them, she had so much built up anger from the years where she had felt abandoned by them. Part of her wanted to make peace with them and reconnect whilst another part wanted to make them feel bad for all the hurt they had caused her. Dylan had asked if she wanted him there for support, but she decided that this was something she wanted to do alone.

Will was also apprehensive; he had called Jay earlier that day to let him know what happened. Jay did not know how to respond either. They both knew they had been bad older brothers and that their sister had needed them, and they were not there for her, but they had also been going through their own problems too. It had been so long that none of them knew what they would talk about, but they all knew that it was a necessary conversation.

When Emily arrived at Molly's her brother were both already there. She approached them tentatively, she had not seen Jay in so long but noted that he had not changed much since they last saw each other. She walked over to the table where they were and sat down cautiously. None of them really knew how to start the conversation so Will decided to start.

"Hey, I know that its too little too late, but we want to be here for you now. You're in your senior year now right?"

"Yeah, one semester left of high school and then college in September."

"College? I guess I pulled the short straw and you two got all the brains." Jay responded, both proud and impressed with Emily. "Which college?".

"University of Chicago. I thought about moving away and starting fresh, but I couldn't leave the city. They also offered me a scholarship and I need that to be able to afford it. Dylan, the guy you met with the broken arm, is also going so I won't be completely alone."

"Wow, a scholarship to University of Chicago. That's really impressive Emily. Now I really do feel like the dumb one. So, who is this Dylan guy?"

"Oh, so now you're trying a protective brother." She said part jokingly but also part seriously. She smiled to make sure her brothers knew that it was a joke, she was trying really hard to be friendly with them, Emily wanted to build their relationship up, not make it worse. "Anyway, he's just a friend, I actually moved in with him and his family a year or so ago. He's like the brother I always wish I had." She realised what she had said and quickly added, "I didn't mean to say that, I'm sorry. I really do want to try and get past this and become close, but he has always been there when I need him."

Will and Jay were happy to hear that Emily hadn't been completely alone but also felt bad that a stranger had been more of a brother to her than they had even been. Then Will asked,

"You live with him? I guess I always thought you'd still live with Dad. We've been bad sons as well as brothers, we haven't had much contact with him either. How come you moved out?"

Emily took a deep breath before going on to explain what had happened. She tried to keep her composure but couldn't' help getting emotional.

"Well when mum got cancer, dad didn't deal with it so well. I pretty much had to care for both of them. Then when she died, he completely shut himself off. He started drinking pretty heavily and sometimes it would get really bad and he got so aggressive. I stayed around to help him because I thought he was just going through a bit of a tough time after she died. You know how everyone deals with grief in different way. But one day it got really bad and he hurt me pretty bad. He immediately said he was sorry like he always did but I couldn't take it anymore. Dylan said that I could come and stay at his and his parents agreed so I left and I haven't seen him since."

Will embraced Emily, he and Jay were both completely shocked at what they had heard, on the few occasions they had been in contact with their father they had briefly enquired about Emily and been told that she was fine. They had no idea that she was not even living with him and what he had done to her. As Will was embracing her, he said,

"I am so sorry Emily, we honestly had no idea that things were that bad. If we'd known about that we would have been there."

Emily questioned this,

"Would it have really changed anything? Would you have come back from war for that?" she gestured at Jay before continuing, "Would you have left New York for me? When both of you first left, I tried to stay in contact, but I was just a kid back then, you were the ones that should have checked up on me, not the other way around. Then when mum got sick, Jay was on the other side of the world but Will you were only a few hours flights away and you still didn't come back. I had to deal with all of this alone. I tried calling both of you but when neither of you responded or even bothered to text back, I figured you didn't care and gave up trying to contact you. So yeah, I did try to tell you about all of this and you weren't there." Emily began to feel bad, she wasn't there to get annoyed at them and tell them what they did wrong but she was unable to control herself. She knew that she shouldn't feel bad, after all it was them that were in the wrong for leaving her in that situation. Both brothers felt remorseful too but knew that words would never be enough to fix what had happened so there was a silence. Emily broke the silence by trying to move past everything,

"So, I know that Will is a doctor, Jay what do you do now?"

"I'm a detective for the CPD, in the Intelligence Unit"

The rest of the evening continued like this. They made small talk and caught up on the missing years between them all working hard to keep the conversation light and to not discuss the problems of their past.
